CHAPTER ELEVEN: formality

"Let me get this straight," Mary spoke, as Scott had been searching his room for his phone. "You, once again, our Derek in danger? What the fuck? I've known Derek for three years and only got him into trouble once. You've known Derek for three days and for him in trouble twenty times already! You suck at being a werewolf."

"Just call my phone," Scott demanded, panicked.

"I don't have your phone number," Mary told him.

"I mean Stiles," Scott argued with her.

"It's not here. Okay, so you lost your phone. Why don't you just get a new one?" Stiles asked back.

"I can't afford a new one, and I can't do this alone. We have to find Derek."  Scott answered.

"You can track him by scent." Mary informed. "You just don't know how to do that."

Stiles seems offended, as Scott had said that he was alone. "Well, A) you're not alone, you have me. And Mary's here-"

"Only to help Derek. Not him." Mary speaks.

Stiles continues, as if she said nothing. "and B) didn't you say Derek walked into gunfire? He sounds pretty dead."

Mary glared. "No, he's not."

"Argent's plan was to use him to get to the Alpha. They're not gonna kill him." Scott explains.

"All right, so then, just let them do what they're planning, you know? They use Derek to find Peter, problem solved." Stiles speaks again.

"Not if Peter's going after Allison to find Derek!" Scott replied, frustrated. "I can't protect her on my own, which means we either find Derek first--
Just-just help me!"

"You know, you probably lost it when you two were fighting. You remember that? When he was trying to kill you? After you interrupted him trying to kill Jackson? Are you starting to see a pattern of violent behavior, here?"

"Jackson is a dick, who doesn't deserve to live," Mary speaks up.

"He wasn't going to kill anyone. And I'm not letting him die." Scott speaks.

"Could you at least think about letting him die? For me?" Stiles asked.

"Says something like that again, and I'm turning you to the hunters for being the second beta," Mary snapped.

The girl furrowed her eyebrows when seeing the frown on Scott's face, him no longer frantically searching for his phone. "What's wrong?"

"My mom just got home from work." Scott answered.

"Is she okay? What's she doing?" Stiles asked.

"Crying," Scott sounded defeated.

"Scott, you can't protect everyone." Stiles tried to comfort.

"I have to."

Mary sighed, moving to sit next to Scott, she placed hand on his shoulder. "Don't worry. We will be able to kill Peter, and your mother is a beautiful woman, she will find someone else. And she will forgot all about creepy Peter."

"Was that supposed to make him feel better?" Stiles inquired of.

"I've been honest with you since the day we met. I never, once, claimed I was good at comforting others."
¸„.-•~¹°"ˆ˜¨ вĻόόȡч мάŕч ¨˜ˆ"°¹~•-.„¸

"I am not going to a stupid dance when Derek is-"Mary began.

"Your mother and I will find a way to track him, but it will take time. We don't have everything we need to track him down." Arturo tells his daughter.

"So, I'm supposed to waste time, and go to school, go to a dance, like, some heartless, unsympathetic, abandoner?"

Arturo sighed. "Aren't all teens like that? Heartless, unsympathetic?"

Mary stayed with a straight face, unamused.

Once again, Arturo sighed. "Look, it is safer if your mother and I go. The hunters know about you, know what you look like and have been ordered to kill you, they haven't dealt with your mother and I for over a decade. We can handle all of them. But, we will need time to get everything we need."

"We don't have t-" Mary began.

"Come on, I need to take you to school."

"But-"

"Your mom picked out a dress for the dance."

"Da-"

"Would you rather your mother be the one to tell you this?"

Mary crossed her arms. "Fine. I'll go to stupid school and the stupid dance. But, if you find him, you call me."

Her father raised his eyebrow at her, he hummed in fake curiosity. "Right. I forgot, who's the adult here?"
¸„.-•~¹°"ˆ˜¨ вĻόόȡч мάŕч ¨˜ˆ"°¹~•-.„¸

Mary grumbled under her breathe, glaring at every stupid that looked in her direction. "Hey," she called out to GreenBurg. "Where Scott MCCall and Stiles Stilinski?"

The boy shrugged. "I don't know."

"I don't know," Mary mocked, shrugging as well. "I don't know. Geesh. Do you know anything? You stayed back, you can't play lacrosse- you know what? I don't have time for this. Once again, thanks for being so useless."

Mary walked down the hall.
¸„.-•~¹°"ˆ˜¨ вĻόόȡч мάŕч ¨˜ˆ"°¹~•-.„¸

"Okay, so," Mary had caught sight of the two hiding behind a wall.  Stiles jumped, screaming once again. "what's the plan?"

"Scott isn't allowed to go to the dance, he's going anyway, Jackson is taking Allison to the dance," Stiles begins. "The hunters are after Scott-"

"Wait, are you going to the dance?" Scott asked.

"My parents are making me go," she crossed her arms again.

"Great! You go with Stiles," Scott starts. "And make sure that Jackson doesn't try anything with Allison."

"Okay, but you are forgetting one flaw in your plan," Mary speaks.

"What?"

"I'm not going to the dance. I'll walk into the school, wait for my parents to leave and then leave the dance to search for Derek."

"I thought you didn't know where he was?"

"I don't. But, I'm hoping by then, I have a vision of where he is." She smiled.

"Okay, so if it doesn't happen. You are still going to the dance with Stiles, and you two will help me with Allison."

"Is this what the effects are with becoming friends with you? Me not having a choice in breaking rules?"

"You already break the rules, and laws," Scott argued.

"On my terms! Okay, whatever, fine, but because I want to make fun of Jackson at the dance. No other reason." Mary speaks. "I'll meet you at the dance." She then walked away.

Stiles stared after her. Scott, realizing that Stiles hadn't said anything, turned at his now oddly quiet friend. He noticed the shocked look on Stiles's face, staring after Mary.

"Stiles?" Scott asked.

"Mary Perez is going to the dance with me," Stiles says. "You told Mary to go to the dance with me."

"Is there a problem?"

"Mary is going to go to the dance with me?"

Scott sighed, hanging his head. Great, another crush Stiles has, that is clueless to his feelings.
¸„.-•~¹°"ˆ˜¨ вĻόόȡч мάŕч ¨˜ˆ"°¹~•-.„¸

Mary had tried on the dress her mother brought for her. The girl sighed, although she thought that the dress looked nice, she couldn't believe that her mother was really trying to force her to go to a dance.

She had thought of going to the mall with Stiles, but after telling him and Scott that she would be dropped off at the dance, since her mother wouldn't believe that she was really going to dance.
¸„.-•~¹°"ˆ˜¨ вĻόόȡч мάŕч ¨˜ˆ"°¹~•-.„¸

"Oh, honey," Her mother speaks in an excited tone, seeing her daughter wear the dress. Her excitement faltered when seeing a pair of sneakers on her daughter's feet instead of the heels she had brought her.  "Oh, did you not see the heels I brought you?"

"I saw them. Put them in the back of my closet, never to be seen or heard form again."

"Yeah, your rooms like a black hole," Arturo jokes.

Both Waleska and Mary look at him, unamused.

"Don't you have to leave town for the ingredients?" Mary asked her father.

"Yes, but I wanted to see you in your dress."

"Why aren't you wearing the heels?" Her mother interrupted.

"I can't run from the hunters in heels," the girl replied. "Especially with Kate Argent in town."

That had caused for the parents to frown.
¸„.-•~¹°"ˆ˜¨ вĻόόȡч мάŕч ¨˜ˆ"°¹~•-.„¸

After multiple pictures taken, her parents finally dropped her off at the school.

"Have fun," Arturo smiled.

"Not to much," Waleska tells her, a smile on her face.

The two drove off, Mary walked into the building, entering the gymnasium.

"Is that Mary?" Lydia questioned, surprise in her voice at the sight of the girl.

Stiles, realizing that he has never told Mary that Lydia asked him to the dance, turned at the news that she had arrived. Neither Stiles nor Lydia realized the other's reaction to seeing the girl.

Stiles held his breathe, swearing that, momentarily his heart stopped beating.

Mary looked around, the gym packed with students. It was difficult to search for the one person that she spoke to here.

Only, Allison Argent had walked up to her. The taller girl smiled down at her. "Mary, it's great to see you here."

"Yeah...great to see you to, Allison," Mary smiled, uncomfortable.  "Have you seen Stiles?"

Allison smiled bigger. "He's with Lydia."

"Oh," Mary awkwardly speaks, looking around.

Allison frowned. "Is something wrong?"

"No-"

"MCCall!" Finstock yelled out, voice echoing in the gym. "I see you!  Come here, buddy."

The lacrosse coach began to make his way through the students,  pushing past them. "MCCall!" Finstock pushed a student. "Get out of my way!"

"He came to the dance?" Mary asked.

Scott had grabbed Danny, pulling him onto the dance floor and wrapping his arms around his shoulders.

"McCall!" Coach yelled, seeing the boy.  "You're not supposed to...what the hell are you-"

"This is awesome!" Mary grinned.

Everyone had gone silent, seeing that Finstock was yelling at Scott. Who was dancing with Danny.

"What the hell are you doing?" The man asked, looking confused.

But, all the students, and even the band had stared at the scene, watching in disgust at the coach.

Scott moved closer to Danny, pulling him to dance. "Yes, Coach?"

Upon realizing how everyone was viewing him? Finstock stammered to explain the situation. "Okay, ho-ho-ho, ha-ha. Hold on, you-- I was just saying he's not supposed to-- I mean, I wasn't saying that he shouldn't-- You guys don't think-- You don't-- I-I was--"

Everyone stared at him, clearly judgmental of him. Especially given he was the coach of both Danny and Scott.

"Just dance, everybody! Just dance! Dance! It's a party!" Finstock yelled.

Mary burst out laughing. When Scott approached the two.  "Allison..."

"Yes, I would love to dance with you," Allison told Scott.

Mary threw her arms in the air, looking annoyed.

"Mary," stiles called out.

"Cute dress," Lydia speaks, as she eyes the girl. Her eyes dragging down her body stopping at the shoes that covered her feet.  "You know, that dress would look much better with a nice pair of heels."

"Yeah, but, I can't run in heels," Mary says, sparing a glance at Stiles.

"Why would you need to run? We're at a dance," Lydia speak, cluelessly.

"I'm gonna go get something to drink," Mary says.

"Wait, Mary, I-" Stiles begins as he goes to follow her.

Mary turned back to him, looking up at him. Stiles, momentarily had stoped talking. For a second, stopping breathing completely.    "You look beautiful."

"Thanks. You look handsome," she smiled brightly.

"I'm sorry," he says.

She tilts her head.

"When Lydia asked me to go to the dance, I just, I've had a crush on her since the third grade-" Stiles begins to reason.

"Stiles, relax. Did you think I'd be mad or something? Look, I was forced to come here by my parents, and Scott forced you to go with me. Or tried to.-"

"He didn't need to force me-" Stiles tried to tell her, that he had wanted to go to the dance with her. But, when Lydia asked him, the girl he'd had a crush on forever, he hadn't thought. He had forgotten that he had been surprised and happy that Mary-sorta-agreed to going to the dance with him.

"Stiles, seriously, it's fine. I get it."
¸„.-•~¹°"ˆ˜¨ вĻόόȡч мάŕч ¨˜ˆ"°¹~•-.„¸

Lydia and Stiles pulled Mary to the dance floor, and after a short dance, it was suddenly forced to a stop.  Lydia had wanted to go find Jackson. Mary's head snapped up.

"Oh, no," stiles spoke, darting forward and catching Mary. Multiple people turned their heads. Stiles had moved, kneeling to the ground with Mary's head on his lap.  "Mary."

Derek was chained up, wired hooked to him as the flip was switched, electrocuting him. There, sitting at the table holding the machine that lead to the wires attached to Derek, sat Kate Argent.
The Hale house.

"Is she having a seizure?" Someone questioned.

"Everyone, out of the way!" Coach Finstock yelled.

Mary shot up, Stiles having pulled his head farther from her prior. "I need to leave." She says, immediately, placing her hands on the ground. She quickly lifted herself up.

"Wow, I don't think you should-" Finstock began.

"It wasn't a seizure," Stiles spoke.

"Yeah. I just...had an panic attack. I-I need to go. I've got medication for it." Mary lied, then rushed out the door, grabbing the end of her dress, slightly lifting it up as she ran.

"Mary!" Stiles yelled out.
