Bloody Mary
"No," Mary whines. "Not again. Can't we go one year without doing this?"
Coda laughs before trying again. "Just one more time? Please Babycakes?"
Mary rolls her eyes towards Cameron and her boyfriend, Luke. "You know I hate it when you call me that, Coda."
Cameron and Luke lock lips and go down for the count on the nearby chenille sofa. When the sound of swapping spit reaches her ears, Mary's had enough. "Oh, for Pete's sake. Get a room."
Cameron stops to look up at Mary and smiles. Luke, slightly dazed, glances up, too, trying to figure out what's going on. He's new to their little click so is unfamiliar with their Halloween habits.
"Don't be jealous, Mar," Cameron teases. "Your day'll come."
"Puh. Yeah, right," Mary scoffs. She starts to collapse into the sofa against Cameron but Coda pulls her back up by the pants loop.
"Nuh-uh, Come on," he says. "Let's go. It's tradition."
With a huff, Mary gives in. "Ok. Let's go. I may as well get this over with."
"Yeah!" Cameron cheers as Luke stands up to follow Cameron down the hall.
"Where're we going?" he asks while trying to cop a feel on Cameron's ass.
As they get closer to the bathroom, Mary and Cameron link hands and start to giggle. "This is gonna be so much fun," Cameron tells her. Coda exchanges a look with Luke, wiggling his eyebrows at the girls.
When Luke mouths, "What's going on?" Coda shrugs and silently replies. "Just wait. You'll see."
They broach the doorway to the windowless bathroom and turn on the light. "So, Luke, every year we play Bloody Mary for Halloween," Mary explains. "Because my name is Mary, I always start the séance."
"Séance?" Luke replies hesitantly. "Wait, what?"
Coda coughs. "Bro, be cool. It's fine."
"Yeah, it's like," Cameron laughs. "Just for fun. Nothin's gonna happen."
"Then why do you-?" Luke begins to ask but is cut off.
"Who knows?" Mary says. "We started it when we were little. Anyway, 3 friends have to hold hands-"
"But, there're 4 of us," Luke says interrupting. Mary bites her lip and looks at Cameron.
"What do you think?"
"I don't know, Mar," she answers. "The spell calls for-"
"Ah, come on," Coda says. "It's just a harmless Halloween prank. We'll be fine."
Mary and Cameron are more nervous now than they were before Luke pointed out their spell's flaw. "Well, I guess," Cameron agrees. Mary turns out the lights and takes a deep breath, staring into the bathroom mirror.
The chanting begins, "Bloody Mary-Bloody Mary-Bloody Mary-"
By the third chant, Mary sighs a breath of relief. It's done.
All of them laugh and exit the bathroom and walk down the hall. Mary leads her friends to the back deck for a drink.
Turning around to shut the sliding door, she misses the shudder of the porch awning as its razor-sharp and heavy framing swings loose and arcs towards her three friends...
