"I will annoy you until you show me."
"I haven't finished it."
"It's been five days."
"Art takes time, Butlercup."
"Nice nickname, Micah."
He laughed and squeezed her arm. "I thought it was pretty creative."
Amy led Micah down the steps of the science building toward the cafe. "I really want to see it,"
"And you will. I promise you will it's just not finished yet."
"Then when-"
"Stop badgering me woman," He grinned down at her as they entered the shop. "Buy me a cookie and I'll consider showing you what I've done so far."
She grabbed his hand and placed it on one of the chairs. "Only consider? Oh, I'm flattered."
"Off you go, young lady." Micah ran his finger across her cheek before sitting down.
Amy had survived another half a week of lectures. She'd become accustomed to the stares, the questions and speaking in front of large amounts of people. Although it was only the second official week of lectures, she absolutely loved it. Plus, Harriet and she discovered that they lived only about four blocks from each other and because Amy was too... Um... Lazy - not scared - to go to the fitness centre for the swimming pool, they'd agreed to go for a morning jog on Saturday mornings.
"Speaking of young," She said after placing the cookie and a cappuccino in front of him. She went back to the counter and grabbed her own drink and a brownie. "It's your birthday this week right?"
"Tomorrow in fact." He smiled.
"Ooo, the big twenty-two. Any plans?"
"None at all, it's my day off so I planned on sleeping all day and taking Ronnie to the groomers."
"What a coincidence. It's my day off too. You're not spending the day cooped up in... Wait, you have a dog? Do you stay on campus?"
That made him grin. "I was waiting for these questions. Yes, I have a dog; my guide dog. No, I don't live on campus; my parents set me up in a nice apartment complex when I came over here."
"How'd you handle coming back and forth?"
"Well, um, my parents make their ends meet. I have a... Um, driver."
She raised a brow and leaned back. "Really?"
"Don't sound like that."
Amy blinked. "Like what?"
"You sound like you just found out I'm a spoilt rich kid."
She crumbled a chunk of the brownie in her hands before placing it in her mouth. "But I can clearly see that you're not."
Micah shrugged and picked up his cookie.
"Back to the point," She resumed. "You're not spending the day cooped up in your apartment. We're going to have... Fun."
"Fun?"
"Yeah, like... Um..."
A slow smile started to spread across his face. "Can't think of anything to do with a blind man, huh?"
Her cheeks started to burn and he laughed.
"I'm joking. Come over if you want. Bring cake, bring a friend, we can have a pity party."
"We'll have a real party."
"Yeah sure," He chuckled. "I hear you know Lucas Heart?"
"Oh! Yeah, that's Evie's roommate." Amy was well aware he was an art student. "What about him."
"Bring him along if you want. Wouldn't want me to be alone whilst you and Evie start gossiping about men or... Whatever you females tend to discuss."
She laughed after a sip of her coffee. "We'll see. I feel like making you suffer."
They finished their coffees and snacks and remained silent for a while. Amy watched with interest as he pulled his sunglasses off, eyes shut, and rubbed his hands over his face. He didn't open his eyes once as he replaced them.
"Why won't you let me see your eyes?" She wondered aloud.
"It freaks people out." He muttered with a slight grimace and pursed lips.
"Will you let me?" She asked cautiously leaning forward.
He sighed and Amy noticed the way his shoulders tensed. "Are you sure?"
"Of course," She answered truly curious.
Micah didn't make a move to remove his sunglasses but she noticed how he placed all of his concentration onto her. She hesitantly lifted her hands and placed them on the frame of the glasses. His nose flared for a second but he allowed her to take them off.
His eyes were a beautiful fluorescent green. She hadn't seen eyes like his before. Michael's were an unusual green, sure, but they were so different she couldn't compare them. Mike's were natural, Micah's was somewhat altered. But not drastically. Although his gaze was blank as he stared at nothing in particular, when Amy inhaled, his empty gaze settled directly onto her.
"Wow... you have beautiful eyes," She murmured still looking directly into them.
His shoulders relaxed and he grinned. "It doesn't bother you?"
"Not at all." She couldn't stop gazing into them.
"Oh, good. That's one test you've passed. Next one is Ronnie." He leaned back with a smirk. He replaced his sunglasses almost too soon and she smiled.
"I'm sure he'll love me." Amy waved the idea away.
"Well, Ronnie's a German Shepherd. He's a big ass loveable German Shepherd."
"I'm excited to meet him already. Now, show me the drawing."
He beamed at her before he shook his head. "No."
"Damn you Micah."
**
Amy pressed the tenth floor button on the elevator with a smile. After class yesterday, Micah called her and gave her his address. She wasn't sure when was an appropriate time to go to his apartment so she spent the morning picking out a nice vanilla frosted birthday cake and a few beers.
"Think Micah won't think I overdid it?"
Amy once again turned to look down at the pack of Corona beers in Evie's hand. "We'll see won't we?"
"Well, if I were in my apartment by myself, I'd want to spend my twenty-second birthday getting drunk and eating cake and ice-cream."
"He's not spending it alone and we're not getting drunk."
"If you say so," Evie muttered as the doors pinged open. "Which one is it?"
"Here, number three." She knocked on the door and there was a whine that sounded like-
"Does he have a dog?" Evie asked with a smirk.
"It's open!" He yelled.
What caught her eye first when she opened the door was how wonderfully organised everything was. He had a cream and smoky grey theme to his walls his couches and attached kitchen to the side.
The second thing she noticed was the large German Shepherd sat in front of them with a tilted head, open mouth and wagging tail.
"Hello girls." Micah greeted from the kitchen. His hand was in the air and that's when she saw the wire overhead started from the door running all the way through to the kitchen past the living room and to a door. "Come in, Ronnie won't bite you. Ronnie, behave."
His dog growled toward his owner but tottered over to them anyway.
"We can stroke him right?" Evie asked.
He shrugged. "He'll annoy you, beg you for a treat and when you'll say no he'll sulk, love you anyway or bite you."
"B-bite?" Amy stuttered as he nudged her empty hand and gave her the puppy dog eyes. She watchfully placed her hand on his head and stroked. Ronnie nudged her hand further and sighed with relief when he his tail wagged faster.
"Ah, you'll be fine. Ronnie, bed."
The smart dog made a noise that sounded like scoff before padding along the wooden floors through a door she assumed was Micah's bedroom.
Micah made his way over to them after they stepped in and shut the door.
"Happy birthday," She grinned. "I got you a cake. Evie got you beer."
"How thoughtful of you both." He chuckled. "Nice to see you again, Evie."
She laughed and actually blushed. What sort of affect this man had on other people always made Amy laugh. Micah was just naturally great.
He smirked. "You can put the cake in the kitchen and put the beers on the living room table as we will be sinking into those right away. And when that's done, I have wine."
"Ooo," Evie walked right in, her feet tapping against the floorboards as she stopped in front of a small beautiful sculpture. It reminded her of those Greek goddess sculptures you see in museums. "What's this?"
Micah pursed his lips to hold back his smile. "Judging by the sound of your footsteps a minute ago and where you stopped I'm assuming you're looking at my small sculpture."
"Yours?"
"Yes that's my life sculpture. Whilst everyone did quick drawings, I preferred sculpting it."
"So... You touched this woman to sculpt her? This is incredible." Evie mused incredulously and Amy started laughing. It wasn't as if the woman were naked, she was wearing a long robe that covered her.
"Yes and thank you," Micah admitted with an honest smile. He made his way to the couch and sat down. "She didn't mind."
"I hope not," Evie giggled. "It's so detailed. You must have breached some personal space for this."
That made him burst out with a fit of laughter. He fixed his sunglasses on his face as he tilted his head back. "You could say that, yes."
Amy walked into the kitchen while they talked about the way he does art and placed the cake on the side. She wasn't sure whether he had candles or not so she bought a few and placed them in her cardigan's pocket.
As she pulled them out, the material of the cardigan reminded her of John's for some crazy mindless moment. She hadn't purposefully avoided him this week... Much. And unfortunately, due to Evie having work after class tomorrow and Michael finishing at seven, John was scheduled to take her home. How wonderful. She was given his phone number which she reluctantly accepted from Evie yesterday evening. She could practically see her smirk through the phone.
Amy placed the candles within the cake and sighed.
"What's wrong, Amy?"
God, she hated how Micah could tell what was wrong just because he could hear her or 'sense' her discomfort.
"Nothing, where are your matches?"
"Kitchen drawer next to the fridge."
She grabbed them from the drawer and lit the candles. "Ready." She called to them.
"Come on, Micah. Amy and I are going to sing terribly to you and get horribly intoxicated."
"Not too horribly I hope. I'd like to not be handling two drunken females tonight if Lucas isn't coming."
Amy watched with satisfaction as Evie sent him an odd look. "You're not like most men are you."
He stood and held his hand out in her direction with a wicked smile. "Now, what makes you say that?"
She took his hand and sent Amy a grin. "No reason at all Micah."
**
John walked into his large seating area connected to his bedroom, slinging his coat over his shoulder. "Ready?"
"I have been for the last twenty minutes." Michael smirked. He stood and glanced at the Victorian mahogany grand piano sitting in the corner next to his wall sized window. John's jaw clenched when he walked toward it. The top board was open.
"Have you been playing again, John?"
He shrugged his answer.
"You have." Michael sent him a smile. "I'm glad."
"It's not for the reason you're thinking. I haven't been sleeping at night, it soothes me. Now come on."
Michael didn't comment any further as they went to the bottom floor to their cars. It was either play, or go out for a run and he'd grown bored of running. So a few nights ago, he sat down in front of his dusted piano, lifted the fallboard over the keys and the top board and stared at the black and white keys. He hadn't played in a very long time.
"Where is Evie tonight anyway?"
"Oh, she's gone with Amy to her friend's for his birthday."
Amy's friend?
Before he could ask anymore, Michael slipped into his car.
Amy's... Friend.
The only friend he could think of was that Micah guy. His birthday? Yes, she must have gone to his house with her. Hmm. I wonder what they're doing, he pondered.
Not that it mattered to him anyway.
John followed Michael's car down the long road before turning left.
It really shouldn't matter to him. He hadn't been sleeping well lately. He was trying too hard not to think about things which in turn made him dream about it. He hated his dreams. They were always nightmares. And lately that's all they were.
Michael and John parked outside Sam's house and got out.
"Which friend?" John couldn't help but ask.
Jesus, even Michael was smiling like Evie did when she told him about Micah.
"I think his name is Micah? I don't know him personally but whenever I see her and him together he's always laughing or grinning. From what I see, Amy adores him."
"Hm." John grumbled. What is it with this kid? Michael hasn't even met the boy and he's describing him as if he were the best thing ever to walk the earth.
"Something wrong, Harris?"
"Absolutely nothing." He replied with a wry smile.
Samuel opened his door with a pouted mouth before they could knock. "We're staying here."
"What? Why?"
"Katherine turned up."
John chuckled. "She can stay here while we go to Yates then."
"No way!" A shrill voice yelled from inside. "Come in here, we have things to talk about. Especially you, John!"
"Yay, I'm in trouble. I love it when Kate yells at me." He muttered before walking into the living room.
John sat beside Kate and pecked her cheek. "Hello trouble."
"Ew," She wiped her cheek.
All Katherine had to scold him about was being so immature about everything and that he shouldn't keep putting his past in front of his future. Words. All words, it didn't do anything to ease him but he'd try. He promised her he'd try.
At around half ten, Michael's phone started ringing. He grinned at caller ID. "This could be interesting. Let me put her on loud speaker. Hey Evie,"
"Michael? It's Amy," Voices echoed through the speaker and her distinguishable giggle made John smile. It was such a beautiful sound. He hadn't had the privilege of hearing it and he was glad he was here to. Kate sent him a wink and he scowled.
"Sorry I'm calling from Evie's phone but the woman has had a few too many. I'll be driving her home and I just thought you should know."
"Oh, it's fine. Where are you now?"
"Saying goodbye to everyone, one second." We heard her muted goodbyes to a Lucas and Micah. "Okay, I'm dragging her to elevator. I'll be at your house in twenty. Are you home?"
"No, I'm at Sam's with Kate and John."
There was a few seconds pause at the sound of John's name and he smiled wider. "Oh, okay. Um, I'll see you tomorrow."
"See you Amy," He hung up and sent John a smirk. "You've ruined the girl, you know."
"I haven't done anything, Michael."
"You better behave yourself when you take her home tomorrow."
John's smile said it all. He'd behave himself, he could promise that. But accidents happen after all. And despite his constant dreams and his past, he wanted to try and get to know her. As a friend. Nothing more. He could do that. He could ignore temptation, easy, he does it every day. He could ignore that full mouthed smile of hers, sure. He could ignore her long athletic legs. No problem at all. John had self control.
"Hey, John?"
He turned his gaze to Katherine, her knowing smile making him almost feel embarrassed. "What?" He answered cautiously.
She winked one of her brown eyes. "Have fun tomorrow. I know she will."
Now, what the hell was that supposed to mean? He hated it when she was so mysterious.
"You're always so damn cryptic, Katherine."
"Well, I don't want to ruin it! Just make sure you dress lightly. Things'll get hotter than you think."
For the love of Pete. Now, how am I supposed to at least try and get a good night's sleep when she had to go ahead and tell me that? He shook his head. It didn't matter what Kate said. All he had to do tomorrow was take her home, easy.
What could possibly get hotter when all he had to do was take her home?
Then his active imagination started conjuring a million different scenarios that could make taking her home tomorrow hotter.
Kate said have fun tomorrow? He's going to try his hardest not to.
