Foals – Moon

Beautiful song...

___________________________________________________

John wasn't a crying man.

He didn't cry.

The last time he shed a tear was 1898 at his family's funeral. Ever since then, well, he hasn't really needed to cry.

But as Michael snatched his phone away from him and listened to that sneaky son of a bitch Lewis and Mike negotiate, he'd never wanted to break down more. He was furious, worried, and completely broken.

What if Amy was hurt? His Amy. His life. His reason to love again. He didn't have any reason to be here without her. She owned his heart.

He'd rip that man's head off. Clean off.

Pam laid a hand on his shoulder but he shook her away.

"Don't lock us out, Jonathan." Pamela mumbled beside him.

"John-" Ana started but he didn't listen.

He grabbed the phone back off Michael and said, "When I get there, I will kill you. I will pierce your heart with one of your pitifully numbered stakes you cruel bastard."

There was silence over the line before the hunter replied, "Not before I do." And then he hung up.

For a few moments he stood there, shaking, flaring his nostrils, controlling his anger, swallowing the fear lodged within his throat only for it to resurface...

All around him, there were voices of panic and voices of reason. Everyone was here...

Micah's parents were upstairs with that damn child. They'd escorted her to Anastasia's and she came readily. Micah was currently standing in front of a table with a map of the area mumbling some sort of spell to find Amy. Kate was standing beside him doing the same. Samuel was touching something of Amy's. His ability to see every detail of someone's life not helping at all.

Nick, Pam and Mike were talking and Evie was standing in the corner of the room, the back of her hand wiping her eyes and her other hand fiddling with her phone.

But John couldn't do anything but stand there. Nothing was getting done. No one was doing anything... Helpful.

Lewis wanted them, all of the vampires, there - wherever there was. He wanted to kill them all. Which wasn't a shock. But what was a shock was the fact that if they didn't turn up he would do something... something else to her.

She must be hurt. He said something else.

God, no one was doing anything!

John advanced toward the hallway, everyone forgotten, until someone grabbed his arm.

"Where are you going?"

"Where do you damn well think I'm going?" He spoke.

The room fell silent behind him and Pam's hand tightened around his forearm. "You can't be stupid right now-"

"Yes, I can. And I will. Because no one is doing anything useful-"

"We won't get anywhere if you disappear and try to find her now."

The frustration of waiting was getting to him. They were right but minutes were passing and he couldn't stand the thought that Amy could be out there in pain or... He couldn't think the worst.

Evie and Michael were having a heated discussion in the corner, Pam, Ana and Nick were speaking in hushed tones and John couldn't stand to wait any longer. They still couldn't find him because of this kid. So, the only way was to talk to the child.

He was aware of the eyes on him as he walked up the stairs and through to Ana's bedroom. Micah's parents stood up from their crouched position in front of the blonde eleven year old girl sat in the corner of the room.

Micah's mother smiled at him, the look of sadness only confirmed they had gotten nowhere at all.

"Can I have a minute?" He asked softly.

David, Micah's father, looked reluctant at first but nodded, leading his wife out of the room and closing the door.

The girl lifted her chin off her knees and looked up into his eyes. She didn't look threatening at all. Violet eyes; puffy and red from tears. Her top and bottom lip quivering the slightest.

He slowly lowered himself to sit cross legged a fair distance away from her watchful glare.

"Keep away from me." She mumbled, sniffling. "I don't like vampires. They kill people."

"Not all of us." He replied easily. "I'm not killing anyone."

"You could."

"But I'm not am I?"

As if that thought hadn't occurred to her, her guard dropped. But then her eyes narrowed and suddenly, there was a splitting pain throbbing between his brows. He grunted and groaned in pain shoving his hands within his hair hoping to stop it.

"You're all the same," The girl said in a voice beyond her years.

"I'm-I'm doing nothing. If I were here to hurt you wouldn't I have by now?" He strained, gripping his head in his hands, blood slowly beginning to drip from his nostril.

The pain stopped after a few more moments and he exhaled sharply, wiping his nose with the back of his hand. His gaze held hers almost as if they were challenging each other. But neither did a thing.

She wiped her eyes and sighed.

"What's your name?" He asked quietly.

"Lucy." She replied almost immediately which surprised him.

He held his clean hand out. "I'm John."

Lucy stared at his hand as if it were acid for a long while. But finally, thank god, she laid her small pale palm within his.

"Your hand is warm. I thought vampires were dead." She mumbled whilst pulling her hand from his loose grip.

"We're still in a way human. We have beating hearts and we sleep. And we have emotions."

The girl frowned at the mention of emotions.

"You're friends with Lewis?"

"He isn't my friend. Mommy says I have to hide him because he kills vampires so I did."

"Do you think Lewis is a good man?"

She nodded fiercely.

Slowly, he shuffled forward and was inwardly triumphant when she didn't flinch away. "Lewis has taken something very dear from me, Lucy."

"A book?"

John smiled sadly and shook his head. "A woman."

"Is she a vampire?"

"No... She's human."

"...Really? He took her?"

"Yes."

Lucy relaxed, crossing her jean clad legs in front of her. Her fingers curled a lock of her loose blonde hair behind her ear. "Why would Lewy do that?"

"To hurt me."

"But you're a vampire..."

"And she's human. She's alive, living and breathing. I love her."

Her eyes widened and she gasped. "You love a human?"

John's heart ached. "She means everything to me."

"Is that allowed?"

"I wouldn't care if it were allowed or not. I would give my life for her."

"Do you really love her? Like fairytale love?"

He couldn't help but smirk a little. "Yes."

The girl beamed at him before frowning. She looked down at his hands and then hers. "And Lewis has her?"

"Yes."

"And you can't find him without me dropping my cover?"

"No, I can't. He's done something to her and she's hurt. Please, Lucy. Let me find her. Let me help her."

John could clearly see the battle within her. What was right and what was wrong. A human life in danger but not because of a vampire. A vampire in love with a human being. She stared at him for what seemed like forever in the silence between them. The flight of emotions flittering across her vision as his throat clogged and a single treacherous tear rolled along his cheek.

And then he heard it.

Four words shouted from downstairs that sent hope within his soul:

"John! We've found them!"

The eleven year old girl smiled at him.

And then another five words that made all hope drain from his entire body:

"Nate's carrying her. She's hurt."

**

15 minutes before

**

Amy watched Lewis hang up the phone.

He didn't move from his spot though. He remained where he was and looked around.

The night sky was pink; a sign of impending snow. Which meant it wasn't hard to see beyond the trees. Which also meant Nate wasn't all that invisible.

She felt like she was about to pass out again. Her head had stopped bleeding a few moments ago but her vision was blurring again. Why did he have to hit me so hard? Or at all in fact?

He remained where he was, staring beyond the tree line. Amy caught another glance of Nate but it was the back of his head as he grew silently closer to Lewis. She wasn't sure what his plan was but he better have a good one.

Amy recalled the others talking about Nate's own cover. He was undetected by witches but would it apply to Lewis?

She glanced into the back of Lewis's car and stared at his open rucksack filled with wooden weapons, things that resembled grenades and... Is that a crossbow? A gun..?!

Her gaze darted back to Lewis. He was a man bound by a curse bestowed upon generations of his family name. Before any of this, he was an intriguing man. A nice, caring guy that was a fan of her work. He could be misunderstood...

But at this moment in time, she couldn't feel sorry for him at all. Not whilst she was bordering on unconsciousness.

There was a crack within the woods but it was a deafening crack. The sound of a tree. She focused her gaze and gasped when Lewis lunged away from a falling tree. He rolled into the snow with a loud grunt and stared at the tree with wild eyes. Amy barely had time to blink before she watched Nathaniel pop out of nowhere, grab Lewis by the neck and-

Crack!

She gasped. He... He broke his neck.

Nate rushed over to her, his grey eyes black and the veins on his face pulsing. But the look vanished almost as if a page of a book had been turned.

"Amy? We have to go."

"B-but-"

"Come on," His large arm curled around her waist and pulled her from the car. Her head spun for a moment as he yanked on the cable ties around her wrists. She shook her head and placed a hand on his shoulder.

"You killed him." Her voice came out shaky as she stared behind her at Lewis's limp body.

"Yeah, but not for long." He mumbled as he led her further into the woods.

Her eyes widened. "W-what?"

"I was listening as he spoke of his curse. The Hunter Gene. His gene hasn't just mutated in one way, it's mutated in all the possible ways, I've heard of it before. He kills vampires. But a vampire cannot kill him. He'll wake up in a few minutes so we have to move away from here."

"Oh, my god." She said breathlessly.

"You're hurt." He stopped and leant her beside a tree. "I would give you some of my blood but it wouldn't be safe and John wouldn't be happy... But that doesn't look good." He lifted his hand toward her head and she flinched even at the gesture.

"I'm fine." She murmured. "Let's just go."

"Are your feet cold?"

"Well, yeah."

"Jump on my back."

"What? No-"

"You can barely walk straight anyway. Either that or I carry you." He smirked.

"I'm not jumping on your ba- ah! Nate!" He scooped his arm under her legs and adjusted her so he could carry her bridal style.

"The quicker we get out of here the better. I don't know if everyone is coming or not because of that witch covering Lewis."

She held her hand to her head thankful to be off her feet. Her wrists were killing her. Her head was killing her, hopefully not literally.

"Don't fall asleep Amy." Nate mumbled. "You may have a concussion."

"I wouldn't have guessed." She slurred. "How far are we from Burnaby?"

"Not far if I run. Will that be okay-?"

Amy screamed at the sound of a gunshot and Nate jolted forward. Before she could even prepare herself he dropped to the ground, landing right on top of her. Her hand flew out to break their fall but the weight of both of them landing on one carelessly flung out hand was too much for Amy's wrist to handle.

She ground her teeth together, ignoring the sharp aching pain soaring all the way up her left arm.

She scrambled from underneath him and groaned.

"Damned vampires," She heard from a distance. Footsteps grew closer before Lewis towered over them. He held up a gun to Nathaniel's limp body.

She quickly threw her torso over his back holding her obviously broken hand close to her chest. "Stop! Stop this, Lewis!"

"Stop this? He broke my fucking neck and you want me to stop? No. Move."

He looked absolutely mad now. Forget about what she thought earlier about him being misunderstood. He was crazy.

"To save me! You're supposed to protect humans not hurt them."

"I am trying. Because of my great-times-five grandfather James Huddleston I am this way. I want to try and help humans but you're not making it any easier." He ground out between clenched teeth. "Now move. Or you will also get a wooden bullet straight through your chest."

Her heart beat a mile a minute. Her ears were ringing from the shot and her mind working as fast as it could to think of something.

She held Lewis's gaze, begging him, pleading with him to stop. "Please." Amy only now just realised he was fully equipped. A belt with all kinds of stakes and those circular grenade things that looked like... Like it was filled with shards of wood. Oh, God...

The snow was soaking right through her tights, her legs were beginning to numb. Her wrist and head were a combined pain now; the only way for her to get through it was to try not to think about it.

Lewis lowered the firearm.

But then he pulled the grenade from his belt, pulled off the ring and threw it behind him. Amy watched in horror as it blew up, the ground and snow around them soaring up into the air. The explosion caused those predicted shards to hit her even, the distance doing nothing to protect her.

And then she watched Pam emerge from the trees shouting and clutching her stomach.

Amy buried her face within her arms a bit too late before glancing up to watch everyone, except for the witches and Evie, advance forward. Where was John?

Lewis grabbed her arm and started running. She tried to pull away, really, she did. But he was strong. And Amy was weak. She was almost floating.

All around her was chaos. Explosions from thrown grenades, thrown stakes. She was shocked to watch how strong Lewis really was. He was stronger and faster than a human. Grunts were heard all around, both male and female. She caught sight of Michael for a split second but barely.

Amy had to think quickly to stop him before...

The wooden arrows...

She grabbed one from the bag on his back and grimaced. Her pants became shallow as her legs started to protest and her muscles started to burn. She would have to do it.

Amy shut her eyes, took a deep breath and used all of the strength she had left to jab the arrow into his shoulder blade. His shout of pain confirmed what she had successfully done. Lewis buckled over his own feet and fell, bringing Amy down within him.

She must have passed out for a second at the impact. Because when she opened her eyes, Lewis was beginning to stand.

All energy had left her now. Her body was beaten, her head was spinning and her wrist was throbbing. Why me? She thought all of a sudden. Oh yeah because I fell in love with a vampire, a very small breathless laugh escaped her lungs.

Lewis looked ready to fight an unwinnable battle. His gaze was behind her but she didn't have the strength to stand or to turn.

But she didn't need it. Someone gingerly grabbed her by the waist and helped her up. Familiar hands.

"Would you rather die quickly or slowly?" She heard his voice spit and she flinched.

Lewis laughed but it was strained. "You can try."

"I'll rip your head off and we'll see if you wake up again." John growled beside her. Her eyes focussed on Lewis in front of her before glancing around the quiet forest. Where was everyone else? Was Nate okay?

Amy looked up at John's face and all of a sudden, the worry and fear disintegrated. She relaxed against him and was thankful to feel his hand grip onto her waist.

"You're nothing but a blood bag, Amy. Once you die, he moves on."

"You son of a-"

"Isn't it true, John?" Lewis stepped toward them. "She's going to die one day. Whether it's today or tomorrow or in fifty years. Will you turn her?"

Amy felt his grip on her loosen the slightest and she panicked. "John, he's-" She started but Lewis carried on.

"Or will you watch her grow old and die? Will you reproduce? Can you even reproduce? And if you can will you put her through that?"

"Lewis-!" Amy tried to reason but of course, he didn't listen.

"You will destroy her, John. Hell, you almost did tonight. You will be the one to kill her. Just like you killed your fam-"

And just like that, John left her side, grabbed him by the neck and held his body above him. Never has she seen John look this way. So... feral. He was barring his teeth at him, growling and hissing. She fell to all fours and shook her head to keep awake. When she looked up, she gasped at John repeatedly punching him in the nose, eyes, jaw, mouth, and the blood pouring in unhealthy amounts down his face.

"Jonathan, stop!"

Amy turned at the sound of Kate's voice and she wasn't alone. Nathaniel was being held up by Nick and Pam. Michael came from behind going straight to Amy and helping her to her feet. Everyone's clothes, except for Katherine's, looked destroyed and yet there were barely any cuts or bruises as evidence. Sam entered with his sister, sticking to her side like any protective sibling would.

John's dark, black gaze turned only briefly to Kate before he resumed.

"John, you can't kill him."

Everyone, even Lewis, turned to Nathaniel's apparently outrageous suggestion.

"Why not?" John yelled. "Why can't this worthless piece of shit pay for what he's done?"

Amy cringed at his anger, almost feeling the force of it inside of her.

"One, he can't be killed by a vampire," Kate interjected.

"Then he will suffer-"

"No." Nate said. "No, you can't kill him Jonathan he's valuable."

Michael tensed beside her. "What do you mean valuable?"

"His name. His grandfather's name. I heard it when he was speaking to Amy, Michael..."

Amy was barely holding on by a thread. Her mind was slowly shutting down... She was seeing spots.

"Michael, his last name was Huddleston."

John's black gaze was slowly returning to its original hazel. His eyes were on her from what she could tell. The voices around her drowned out almost as if she were underwater. She blinked and found that it was John holding her now. She was tired. The many hits to the head, the broken wrist, her bruised body. She was exhausted.

So, very easily, she welcomed unconsciousness. But just before, she saw John mime the words, "I'm sorry."
