9 - Live Bait
My blood is boiling, not from anger, but...adrenaline.
Cas wasn't hard to get back to the bunker. Apparently prayer works very fast when it comes to communicating with an angel.
Night has fallen over Lebanon, Kansas. Devil's traps have been spread out all around the bunker, painted in the grass. If Not-Cole shows, there's a guarantee he'll get caught. Lucky for us, there is no rainy forecast for tonight, so we don't have to worry about the paint washing off.
Cas remains close by, at the ready in case something happens. I'm armed with holy water, not trusted with a weapon just yet. It'll be enough to inflict pain on Not-Cole should he get too close. Sam and Dean remain crouched near the Impala, ready to react.
I remain by myself, eyes scanning through the dark for the demon. If he has staked this place out, he won't resist this opportunity to nab me. If he sees the traps though...
I'm hoping the demon is really stupid and oblivious.
A whistle reaches my ears. I turn. Far away from me, Not-Cole offers me a wave. Careful not to show my hand, I maneuver through the traps in the grass. He stands just a few feet from the one I stand in. He remains on the outside of it.
"Willa," he greets me softly.
"Stalking me much?" is my greeting to him.
"Well, you don't make it easy, since you don't come out for some sunshine or fresh air. You could use a little more sun, you look a bit pale. Or maybe that's just the moonlight. Instead, I see your bodyguards go in and out. I decided to take a leave and happened to think to pop in and see if anything changed." He smirks. "Look, Willa, I know the traps are here. I know you're expecting me, and so are they. If you come nicely, they won't get hurt."
"You're alone, asshat."
Not-Cole chuckles. "Am I?"
With a snap of his fingers, chaos ensues.
Demons appear out of the blue, aiming for my hidden backup. Cas is ganged up on with four demons, Sam and Dean with a total of six. Not-Cole relaxes on the back of his heels, watching with keen interest.
"You're just wasting demons, they'll all be dead," I tell Not-Cole.
"While that may be true, I figured I'd let them have a chance to kill the infamous trio. Now," he extends a hand out to me, "be a good girl and come with me."
I take a step back in defiance. "Come and get me if you want me so badly."
"You know I can't do that. One step in there and I'm a goner."
Another step back from me. "Like I said, jump in and get me. If you don't, one of the guys will detain you. Sounds like either way you'll be in our house."
"'Our' house, huh? Did they officially adopt you? Or did you adopt them?"
I take a quick sweep of the battle grounds. Cas has taken down half of his opponents, Sam and Dean are in the same boat. Cas flings a demon into our direction, into Not-Cole actually, who stumbles into the Devil's trap.
"Thanks, Cas!" I yell to the angel.
Not-Cole straightens up, flashing black pits for eyes. "I wouldn't thank him just yet. It's you and me in this ring. They're still busy."
"You were saying?" asks Dean. A silence has fallen over the bunker grounds.
Demons lay on the grounds, unmoving. I wonder if the people they stole the bodies from still remain or if they made an early exit. I try not to think about it—Cole may still be in his body.
I have no idea what I'll do with him if we can bring him back out.
"You make quick work, I'll give you that," says Not-Cole. He puts his hands behind his back.
Cas grabs Not-Cole, and we disarm the traps so that he may pass through towards the bunker. Cas shoves Not-Cole forward first, Sam and Dean protect me at the rear. Not-Cole whistles a calm tune as he's escorted inside, not wasting any chances to sneak a peek at me over his shoulder.
We follow Cas into a room I don't believe I've seen before. I stop at the doorway, Sam and Dean move forward. I don't realize what they're doing at first until they pull open a set of doors that lead into a...dungeon?
"Kinky," Not-Cole comments.
I hang back, moving closer to the dungeon entrance as Cas puts Not-Cole in a Devil's trap etched on the floor, strapping him down in a chair. Sam pulls out a flask I haven't seen on him.
"Um, what is this?" I ask.
"Which part?"
"All of it."
"Ah, a good ole interrogation," Not-Cole muses as Cas backs away from him. I still remain the furthest away. "I've heard stories about the infamous Dean Winchester's time in Hell, torturing souls to stay off the rack himself. Do I get the privilege to see him in action?"
Don't ask, I tell myself at the revelation. Definitely not the time. Shelve it for later.
"No, you don't," says Dean gruffly. "Tell us what we wanna know."
"Ask nicely."
Cas rolls his eyes. "Please tell us what we want to know."
Not-Cole snickers. "Angels, so stupid."
"Why are you after me?" I pipe up.
"Ah, we regained our voice, I see." The demon shifts in his seat. "I told you before, Willa. We don't want to kill you, we want to...I suppose the word I'm looking for is recruit you."
"I'm just a sixteen-year-old high school girl. What use would I be to demons?"
"I'm glad you didn't say normal sixteen-year-old girl." Not-Cole shakes his head. "If you're normal, then I'm a unicorn."
"To be fair, that's an insult to unicorns," Cas comments.
Note to self: unicorns exist in this world. Cool.
"What nonsense are you trying to spew here?" asks Sam.
"None that is worth your time, or mine," says the demon. "Look, if I don't take Willa soon, my head is gonna get chopped."
"Well, we're not giving you Willa, so, off with your head," says Dean.
"You always sounded like the more dramatic of the two."
This runaround goes on for a little bit longer before we call it quits, shutting the doors to the dungeon. I feel mentally exhausted just listening to Not-Cole.
"If we start hurting the demon, is it gonna hurt Cole?" I ask the three.
"We're unsure if Cole is still with us," says Cas gravely. "That demon isn't leaving until we know why he's after you."
"It doesn't make sense. This whole chain of events is wonky," says Sam incredulously.
"Clearly," says Dean. "If you wanna help us out here, Wills, that'd be awesome."
"I have no idea what he's talking about," I say honestly. "I never encountered anything of the supernatural until Homecoming. He could have the wrong girl."
"I don't think he does," says Cas. "He wouldn't have shown up on bunker grounds to abduct you if it was a case of mistaken identity. You are what he's after."
"Gee, thanks. I was really hoping this was one big mistake."
"Until he cracks, I guess we'll have to keep with business as usual," says Dean. "We get a case, Sam and I will roll out. Cas, you and Willa can chill and see if you can crack him."
"I don't know a thing about interrogation, let alone pulling information from a demon," I say adamantly.
"Then watch Cas and see how it's done."
