17 - The Tail

There's no denying it: everyone had their reservations about this road trip. But with some long discussion, we have a solid enough plan that everyone can get on board with.

We gathered the necessary precautions and supplies. While Cas would be coming with us, he'd be doing a perimeter nearby to be sure nothing comes through. He got an early start once I'd given him the town I lived in. If anything popped up suspicious, he'd give a head's up. But he did tell us that if we needed him to absolutely reach out.

Even though I'm not related to Cas, I feel like I've just gained an uncle. And I've already got one.

We've still got some time before we reach my hometown. It's becoming a longer trip, mostly due to my little bladder. Right now is no exception. Thankfully, giving Dean the head's up, once he sees the next rest stop, he turns into the parking lot.

"I'll run in with her," Sam offers.

"Er, to what, watch me pee?" I wrinkle my nose.

"No, for snacks. Provisions. Unless you want to starve?"

"Er, no thanks. Fine."

Dean lets the car get a rest while Sam and I head into the rest stop. We break off, with me making a beeline for the bathroom. Thankfully, no one else is inside, allowing me the stall of my choice. Damn, I should've thought to tell Sam to pick me up some of my favorites. He wouldn't know them, obviously.

I exit the stall, doing a very throughout scrub of my hands. While this restroom looks fairly kept, I'm not risking getting ill.

Movement catches my peripheral. As I begin to turn, a frown comes down on my face. A man is in the women's restroom. And he doesn't look lost. Or embarrassed.

He doesn't speak a word. Just watches as I finish rinsing my hands. As I move towards the door, to grab some paper towels, he gets in my way.

"Dude, get the memo," I snap. "You're in the wrong bathroom." I gesture to the lack of urinals. "Get out now before I get security."

"Oh, now, is that any way to treat an old friend?"

I cock my head, baffled. I take slow steps back, reaching back to find a soap dispenser. The sinister tone in his voice isn't comforting. Since I don't recognize him, my mind is pointing me to one direction.

"Remember me, Wills?" His blue eyes flash black.

Naturally, I forget any sort of weaponry. I don't even have a flask of holy water on me to spray in Finn's face.

My hand finds the soap dispenser. I get some of the foam in my hand, flinging it into his eyes. He doesn't reel back in pain as I had really hoped. Instead, his eyes screw shut, one hand wiping the stuff from his eyes. Before I can try and move around him, blindly, he thrashes an arm out to stop me. With some force, he pushes me towards the back wall.

"That was very rude," he snarls. His eyes remain black pits.

I do a quick scan of him. He doesn't seem to have any weapons. I guess that's a win for me. It's not a win that, while I have powers, I don't know how to properly use them. He knows how to wield his.

He's blocking my only way out, there's no other alternative. Not even a window to try and make an escape out of. He had to have been following us.

I feel no remorse at the idea of punching his stupid face in. Now that Cole has been buried, he's taken on a different face. Wild blond hair. A face with sharp features. Someone I won't ever know. Some poor soul who was probably going about his day, never thinking that it could get ruined by a demon.

I know the feeling.

"You don't look so happy to see me." Finn pouts. He puts his demon eyes away, reverting them back to blue. "What a shame. And here I thought we were starting to get along."

I keep myself on the farthest point away from him. If he comes for me, I'll need room to maneuver and evade him.

"Easy, I'm not out to get ya. Not this time."

"Oh, 'this time'. Right, because that makes me feel better." I have no phone to call Sam or Dean with. I could scream, but I'm not sure how well that'll work in my favor. Cas, a little help here. Finn's back. I'm trapped in the bathroom. He's blocking my way out. "You ruined my life, you dick."

"Ouch. I'd like to think I made it better. More exciting, really." He stuffs his hands in his pockets. "I mean, you became a badass because of me. Or a work-in-progress."

"I became something that wasn't me because of you. I became a badass all on my own."

"Sure, without anyone's help, little Miss Independent. Certainly not from the help of your daddy, your uncle, and their pet angel. Oh, yeah, the rumor mill travels fast, especially with gossip like that."

"Trying to abduct me again?"

"Listen to the words I'm telling you, eh? I'm not out to get you, this time around. Even if I was, I'd rather you come willingly with me, Willa. Those morons out there, they don't see the potential in you. Demons do. Hell recognizes it. And...maybe you have, too."

I groan, my hands tempted to nest in my hair. "Is there some prophecy we don't know about? I mean, you make it sound like I'm the Holy Grail or something. I'm just me."

"No, you're a Winchester. A Winchester that follows her daddy's footsteps with just a drop of demon blood in her veins. Did he tell you how that happened, Willa?"

I remain silent on the issue.

"A yellow-eyed demon snuck into his room when he was six months old and fed him a few drops before Mommy Winchester caught him in the act. He would've had more had she not interfered. Oh, the story is infamous, Wills! I'm surprised you haven't heard it until now."

"Okay, so what if I have a drop in me?"

"We can show you what you are truly capable of. If you listened to what I'm really saying, now's the chance to bolt with me." He holds a hand, outstretched.

"No."

He sighs. "Wills, if you don't do this my way, it's going to turn out bloody. Maybe not right this second, but it will."

He's threatening them. He might even be threatening Mom if he's been following. "What insanity makes you believe I'd ever trust a word of a demon, let alone take your hand?"

"Look, kiddo, sometimes even blood bonds aren't enough to save people. If you grow, learning how to better yourself...they may recognize you as a threat. Power can corrupt even those with the best intentions."

"I'd never—"

"All it takes is a few bad days. A few accidental murders. That can hurt your mind, you know. The trauma. The damage it can do...You think they wouldn't be able to see that, if it happens? They've been in this game for so long, they'd sniff it out pretty quickly, I'd wager."

Cas, please. This is an emergency. Crisis! It's hard to stay calm right now. "They wouldn't give up on me."

"Until they would. Until they'd realize the power ruled you instead of the other way around."

"You know, the longer we're here, the more suspicious they'll be. I don't think they'll care about barging into the women's bathroom if it means saving my life."

Finn sighs dramatically. "All right, fine, cut our quality time short. Just shows how much you really care about me."

"I've never cared about you." I tense as Finn moves to grab something, my guess is a weapon. It won't surprise me if he changes his mind and nabs me here and now. It's the opportune moment.

"I'm not pulling a weapon, calm yourself." He holds a vial of what looks to be blood. He forces it into my hand. "When you're backed into a corner, use it. See what I mean about your power. We can offer you something they never can."

By the time I blink, Finn is gone. My legs give out almost immediately, and I fixate on the blood vial in my hands. Is it his blood? He never let me have the chance to ask. See what I mean about your power.

I need to get out of here. Once I get control of my legs again, I exit the bathroom. I hide the vial of blood, for now.

Sam looks relieved when he sees me. But his face falls as he realizes something's up.

"What's wrong?" he asks.

I walk past him, towards the exit doors. He easily catches up and almost passes me. Mr. Long Legs over here. "Just nerves. I mean, this is a big deal. I've been gone for a while now. What Mom has concluded..." I hug myself. "I just want to ease her mind. I don't know how she's going to take all of this when we get there."

"We'll handle it in stride."

Tell him about Finn. Tell them all. "Finn cornered me in the bathroom," I blurt out.

Sam fumbles a step at my words. "What?"

"He didn't hurt me. I think he's just being a troll now." We're back out in the parking lot.

"If he can find you here...maybe we should—"

"We're not turning back," I say adamantly. "If he tries to ruin my visit home, he's gonna get his ass handed to him. Four on one. He'd be suicidal to try."

"We'll be on extra guard regardless. We have to let Cas in on this."

I nod. "Definitely."

"What are you two birds chirping about?" Dean asks as we both get back into the Impala.

"We've got a tail," Sam tells him. "Her number one fan paid her a visit in the bathroom."

"We'll make sure to lose that tail." Dean looks into the mirror to meet my eyes. "Don't you worry, Willa. He's not going to ruin this for you."

**Don't you just hate it when demons just want to be, well, a demon on your shoulder?**
