Truth unfolded
Rolan was telling the truth, Brett Townsley had murdered my family that night, five years ago.
"Do you see now?" Rolan said beside me. "I would never harm your family, they meant as much to me as they did to you, Lorelei."
I felt sick, angry and hurt, how could Brett do this to me and then pretend like he hadn't just murdered my mom... my dad... my siblings, for years he had helped me, even helping me get a job where he worked.
He's a monster, a real monster for what he has done to me, my family, and the countless of people he's tricked, and hurt.
"Who else knows about him?" I asked, looking over the evidence on Brett that lays scattered on the table in front of me.
Rolan and his 'followers' had really went all out with gathering evidence on Brett and everything he's done, or currently doing, from timelines he leaves his house, to the type of food he ate, they constantly had a date and time for every small thing he had done in the past five years.
"It's better you don't know."
I looked up at him. "Why?" I frowned.
"You have more than enough evidence to nail him, he's not only gotten away with murder but the things in these folders... he's a monster Rolan, you must know I can't just sit back now that I know the truth."
"I know." He said, sitting back down, his eyes unmoving from the mass of evidence on the table.
Even though he could've cleared his name a few months ago, he didn't, which begs the question of 'why' hasn't he come forward with this evidence?
He could've went to me, or anyone at the agency, there are people there that want to make a difference, to stop people like Brett getting away with such crimes and living normal lives as if the law couldn't touch them.
"You must understand Lorelei, Brett not only has the law on his side, but he has friends in high places, and those people own half the country and want the things he wants, even if I brought this forward, it wouldn't matter."
My stomach twisted in pain, because I know what Rolan is saying is probably true, but it still annoys me that Brett has had more than enough time to sink his claws into some very important people, not only within the government, but high ranking Alpha's who own half the country.
I sink back in my seat and rub my forehead, completely speechless in what to do about this situation, a huge part of me wants to just hunt him down and put a bullet between his eyes, and the other part wants to see the justice system work, and have him rot behind bars in prison.
Rolan put his hand over mine and squeezed it, making me open my eyes and look at him, seeing him smiling at me, showing the tips of his fangs as he smiled.
"I know what you must be feeling, I too wanted to kill him, but my situation forbids me from doing so."
I move my hand away from his and scoff as I turned my head away from him.
"Your situation?" I shook my head. "You aren't guilty Rolan, you're still a criminal, just look at the people who follow you, they've caused so much heartbreak in this country that can't be ignored."
"I can't help it if there are other lost souls that dream the same dream as me, Lorelei."
Dream? What he's doing is his dream? "Don't make me laugh." I spat out, standing up and moving away from him to catch my breathe.
I really want to put my hands around his neck and squeeze, to watch the life go out of his eyes slowly, from all the pain he's not only caused me, but the millions of citizens his 'followers' had terrorized.
"This country is broken, Lorelei, don't pretend like half of my species are treated like garbage on the street." Rolan stood up, his voice raised. "For too long have we suffered, and treated like common slaves for a species so weak that they rely on technology."
Rolan grabbed me roughly by the arm to turn me around to face him, he stood inches from my face as he glared down at me, his eyes blazing red as his nostrils flared.
"The wolves you love so much have murdered, butchered and taken advantage of my kind for generations, and to this day the most deaths in this country is due to pack greed, and what does your law do about it?" He snarled out, tightening his hold on me.
Rolan was breathing heavily, his nails dug into my arm before he released his hold and scoffed away from me, gripping his hair tightly as he walked to the other end of the room.
What he says... it's been a big problem for over 400 years, but in recent years humans have taken control, with the inventions of weapons strong enough to stabilize the country, and packs, the law has worked, and the death toll for land has dropped.
We're making a difference, what Rolan is doing will achieve nothing but more bloodshed, pain and chaos, although I feel his pain, I also know it's useless to go down this route.
If only he had told me then, I could've stopped him from this path, maybe perhaps... we could've done more.
I had to stop him, whatever means necessary, I wanted to save Rolan before he was unsavable.
"Our daughter..." I swallowed hard as he turned to look at me. "She shows sighs of shifting, if you go down this path you will only make her life more difficult, so think of her happiness for once, and stop this Rolan."
The room fell silent as he stared at me, his eyes unmoving as he stared at me.
A heavy sigh filled the air as Rolan rubbed his face with his hands. "Does..." He quietly starts to say, before clearing his throat.
"Does she know anything about me?"
My chest tightened as I kept my head high, and nodded my head. "She keeps a photo of you under her pillow." I told him the truth.
When I found the photo, I asked where she had gotten it... it made me so mad that she sneaked the key for my office, which she knew she wasn't allowed in and started looking through my boxes of memories, until she stumbled on the photo of him and I, back when things weren't so confusing.
I told her the truth, and let her keep the photo.
"She wants to know you, Rolan." I said, stepping closer to him as his eyes falter. "Becca needs her father in her life, you're the only one who can fill that role, Blake would also agree, all you have to do is come with me.
He looked at me and swallowed hard. "Come with me, leave this place and set yourself free, show Becca and the world you're not a monster, for not only her sake, but for yours too."
Rolan had spent the last five years on the run and in hiding, holding onto the truth like a ticking time bomb, consumed by revenge and a dream so twisted he's lost sight of what really matters, and that's family.
"I- I don't know how to be free." He spoke quietly, his eyes looking so broken.
I stepped forward and wrapped my arms around him, Rolan leaned down and rested his head against my shoulder as his arms mirrored my actions and wrapped around me as I inhaled deeply.
"Come home Rolan."
Rolan begun shaking in my hold as his head begun to slowly nod, his arms tightening around me painfully but I held on and let him express how he was feeling as he continued to nod his head as it rested against my shoulder.
"I'll come... I want to come home, I want to be free of this pain, and meet my daughter." He breathed out. "Just..."
We both pulled back as we stared at each other. "Don't forget about me when I'm gone."
What is he talking about? "Rolan?"
"I can't spend the rest of my life behind bars Lorelei, I won't let your mate take me in, I need to finish what I started with Brett, once and for all, only then will I be able to accept my punishment."
"What are you saying right now?" I shake him, my heart beating fast. "Forget Brett, we'll get him, I promise he will pay for-"
"No." He interrupted me, putting his hand on my shoulder with a small smile playing on his lips.
"I'm going to kill Brett, only then will I be able to breathe, whatever happens to me then will be fate, but only when he's gone will I be free of this pain in my heart, that is my only wish now Lorelei." He said softly, his hand reaching out to touch the side of my face.
"I will always love you, whatever happens, I hope you know that."
My heart twisted in my chest painfully as I nodded my head, as fresh tears fell slowly down my cheek. "I know."
I know you do Rolan. "You won't die, I won't let you."
"We'll stop Brett, and I know just the right people that will help us, so don't talk like that again, he will pay for what he's done, I promise you."
"I believe you, my love." Rolan said, his smile fading as he pulled away from me.
