Chapter 33: The Truth Comes Out
Jey sat in the waiting room of the clinic, arms crossed, his jaw set tight. The air was thick with tension as he glanced to his left, where Jimmy and Solo sat in silence.
Neither of them had much to say when Jey told them the truth-only that they'd take the test and handle whatever came next. But now that they were here, waiting for the results, the weight of it all settled heavy on their shoulders.
Jimmy drummed his fingers against his knee, his foot tapping anxiously. "Man, this is crazy," he muttered under his breath.
Solo, ever the quiet one, sat still, his expression unreadable. "It don't change nothin'," he finally said. "If one of us is her dad, we step up. That's it."
Jey let out a humorless laugh, shaking his head. "That's it, huh? Like it's that simple?" His voice was tight, frustration creeping in. "We supposed to just move on like this ain't a whole betrayal?"
Jimmy exhaled sharply, rubbing his hands together. "Ain't nobody say that, Uce. We just gotta handle it, no matter how it plays out."
Before Jey could respond, the door to the office opened, and the doctor stepped in with a manila folder in hand. The tension in the room became suffocating.
"Mr. Fatu," the doctor addressed them, glancing between Jimmy and Solo. "We have the results."
Jey sat up straight, his stomach twisting into knots.
The doctor opened the folder and looked up. "The biological father of Lillian Carter is... Solo Sikoa."
Silence.
Jey's heart slammed against his ribs as he turned his head slowly toward his youngest brother. Solo remained still, his face unreadable, but his fingers curled into tight fists.
Jimmy let out a low breath, as if he had been holding it in, while Jey's entire body tensed. "You?" His voice was quiet, but the storm brewing behind it was impossible to miss.
Solo finally looked at him. "I didn't know, Uce." His tone was firm, honest. "If I did, I wouldn't have let you go through all this."
Jey clenched his jaw, his fists balling up at his sides. "How the hell does this even happen, man?" His voice rose, the anger bubbling over. "How you end up with her, Solo? You knew she was my ex!"
Solo held his gaze, his expression calm but unwavering. "It was one night, a long time ago. Before I ever thought it would matter. I ain't know she had my kid."
Jey let out a bitter laugh, shaking his head. "You serious? You ain't know? That don't make it right."
Solo inhaled deeply, then stood up. "I ain't making excuses, Jey. But I know now. And I'm gonna take care of my daughter." His voice was steady, unshaken.
Jey felt the weight of everything pressing down on him. He wasn't Lily's father. But his brother was.
The betrayal stung, but more than that, the reality of the situation settled in. There was no undoing what had been done.
Jimmy, still quiet, finally stood as well. "We gotta figure this out as a family," he said, looking between them. "Ain't no other way."
Jey exhaled sharply, shaking his head before finally standing up. He wasn't ready to accept all this just yet. But one thing was clear-Lily was family.
And no matter how much it hurt, they had to find a way through this.
