Blood Stained Dirt -6-

Cassie opened her eyes and blinked a couple of times, not used to completely dark rooms. She took a few deep breaths and then sat up and looked at the clock in Kris’s direction. It was about 7 in the morning. She felt next to her and felt his body and smiled. She laid her head on his chest and smile wider as his hand wrapped around her back, holding her to him. After a moment, her smile faded and she pushed herself up, only to be dragged right back against him. She closed her eyes. She couldn’t hear his heart.

“Good morning, Cassandra. Why are you awake so early? I was so comfortable too.” She counted in her head and timed her breathing, feeling herself dangerously on the edge of an anxiety attack.

“Can we do this later? I’m naked at the moment. Didn’t realize I would needed to be dressed for visitors so early.” He laughed but didn’t remove his arm.

“I felt like we needed a little chat after what happened last night.” Cassie rolled her eyes and tried pushing off of his chest again.

“What happened last night will not be repeated. Not for your sake, mostly because I have no idea what you are up to, but for my brother and lover’s sake. Thank you very much for your concern, now you may depart.” He rubbed his hand up and down her back and she sighed and just laid there. He was very quiet for a couple minutes.

“I know you do not believe it, Cassandra, but I was very worried about your frame of mind. I pushed you farther than I should have and I apologize. Please forgive my rudeness.” Cassie was dumbfounded. He wasn’t sounding cocky or sarcastic. She took a couple breaths to level her temper.

“You are apologizing for your rudeness for murdering my mother? How gentleman like of you.” She looked up at him. She couldn’t see him but was certain that he could see her clearly. She scowled at him and he reached over and with his other hand he played with her hair. She grabbed his hand and he then grabbed a fist full of hair and pulled her head back. She gasped in pain.

“I am trying to be nice. You don’t accept that, that is fine. But don’t you dare say I didn’t try to be nice. I’m surprised you haven’t even asked what I did with your lover.” Cassie went pale and stopped yanking at her hair.

“Where is Kris?” Her breathing started to become ragged and she mentally punched herself for being weak at this time and showing her fears. He leaned close and kissed her forehead.

“He just got home. I could have easily done something. Remember that.” He let her go and she rolled over and winced while holding her head. She felt wind shifting and then the room seemed empty. She rolled out of bed and suddenly a light was on. She looked around and the room seemed much lighter and light was filtering through the curtains on the windows. She sighed and found her dress then pulled it on. She opened the door and looked over the railing and the boys were talking quietly in the living room that the upstairs overlooked.

“Where the hell were you?” They looked up, shocked. Aiden let out a laugh after his shock wore off.

“We got called for a job early. I didn’t think you would like to be woken up.” Kris was more serious and didn’t laugh at her, though she could see the amusement in his eyes.

“Why are you awake so early? Kris was hoping to slip back into bed with you.” Aiden teased her and she rolled her eyes.

“Oh no reason. There was just an early morning visitor. I’m going back to my room for more sleep.” The boys were silent as she walked down the hall.

“What visitor?” Aiden finally asked and Cassie looked over at him.

“You know. But he sort of ruined my mood. I think I’m just going to shower and dress. Do you guys want breakfast?” The boys didn’t respond as she disappeared into her room and emerged 20 minutes later feeling much more fresh. She put on a pair of jeans and a belly shirt. She walked downstairs and enjoyed the feel of the plush carpet on her bare feet as she walked into the kitchen. The boys were talking and they stopped as soon as she walked in and watched her. She mixed up a batch of French toast and started to cook it.

“So how are you feeling?” Aiden hesitantly broached the subject.

“So finally the elephant in the room is out!” She turned around and smiled at him. “I’m fine. I just think this whole thing has been messing with my emotions a little bit. That wasn’t me. I don’t go haywire like that and it all started since the club. I’m fine now. Speaking of club, I was thinking about hitting one tonight. I know it is only Wednesday, but there are plenty of clubs that are open mid week as well. I think I just want to dance!”

She plated some of the toast and put it in front of the guys. They were silent and unsure what to say. Cassie turned around and planted her plate on the counter in front of them and started to pour syrup on her plate. She watched them and smiled as the boys battled with themselves on what to say.

“I’m also deciding to drop out of school and becoming a hooker. They make good money.” She shoved a forkful into her mouth.

“I do not think so, baby sister.” Aiden let out a laugh.

“I’m not going to shatter any second so you guys can actually talk to me. So I woke up with a creepy guy in bed that threatens my life style and loved ones. Who cares! Life still goes on.” She shoved another fork full in her mouth.

“Well, as much as I know you dislike hearing this, but your brother and I actually do have business at one of the clubs tonight. So we can go with you.” Cassie wagged her fork in the air and swallowed.

“I already figured out what you guys do. You just hunt down people like vampires and threaten them. Whatever. I’m cool with it. Anyway, I’m going back to bed. Can I please have my door back?” She turned back towards the sink and grabbed out a glass, the filled it with water. After taking a drink she set it on the counter.

“How about you just go crash in Kris’s room. I’ll take care of your door later.” Cassie sighed. She then looked at Kris, smiled and then winked at him before walking out of the room. Kris was too busy staring after her before Aiden elbowed him. He looked over to complain and saw Aiden staring intensely toward the sink. Kris looked and saw Cassie’s glass was hovering in the air.

“Hey guys!” They heard Cassie coming and Aiden quickly snapped the cup out of the air right before she turned the corner. “Are you done talking about stuff? I want Kris.”

“I’ll be right up.” Aiden just shook his head at her and she walked away laughing. They listened for the door to close upstairs.

“We need to tell her if this is the real deal,” Aiden whispered and Kris shook his head.

“Absolutely not! If even a percent of what he said was true, she would end up dead. I’d rather not take that chance.” Aiden stood up and walked over to the sink, placing the glass in.

“What do we do then? Just wait for him to come and take her?” Aiden was getting more agitated. Kris went dead silent.

“I won’t let him take her. We have no idea what his plan is. Considering that he knows as much as he’s letting us believe, he probably already knows that she just made that cup levitate. It’s a safe bet that he will make a move soon. Just keep an eye on her is all we can do. I won’t let him take her. Believe me.” Aiden watched Kris for a moment as he clenched his jaw before sighing and nodding in return.

“You better hurry upstairs. She’s not one for waiting.” Kris walked away and Aiden just placed his hands on the counter and gazed off while thinking.
