Trust or Betrayal

It is currently 5:50 am and Wellington is sitting at his desk awkwardly glancing down at his hands. Suddenly someone enters Wellington's tent. Wellington looks up and notices Lord Uxbridge with a warm bowl of soup and a cup of tea in his hands.

Lord Uxbridge stares at Wellington with concern due to how pale Wellington is. Lord Uxbridge starts speaking in a calm but slightly concerned voice.

Lord Uxbridge: Eat you need it.
Wellington: I'm fine...
Lord Uxbridge: You don't look well, sir...You haven't eaten in 3 days. Sir, please eat something. I'm worried about you.
Wellington: I...
Lord Uxbridge: Sir your not fine.
Wellington: Uxbridge you don't understand what it's like to feel so upset and guilty about something.
Lord Uxbridge: You're doing this because of what happened?
Wellington: Yes...I just blame myself.

Tears begin forming in Wellington's eyes and they start gradually streaming down his face. Then he begins speaking in a tone full of sadness and guilt.

Wellington: He was there for me when I needed it...But I wasn't there for him when he needed it...
Lord Uxbridge: It's not your fault sir...
Wellington: I should have stayed in England with Henry...I should have given him the comfort he needed.
Lord Uxbridge: Sir...If you didn't go to Spain or Portugal I don't know what would have happened. But you wouldn't be the leader of our Army and you probably wouldn't be England's hero.
Wellington: Stop calling me that...Im, not a hero.
Lord Uxbridge: Well the people in England call you that. Because to them, you are their hero.

Wellington: I don't seem like a hero at all so I don't wish you to call me one. So stop calling me that, please Uxbridge.
Lord Uxbridge: Other than eating something what will make you feel better?
Wellington: Seeing my wife and holding her in my arms. I know that I can't return home to see her yet. But that's all I wish to see right now is my wife. I just want to hold her.
Lord Uxbridge: I understand sir...But a battlefield is no place for a woman. You will get to see her when you go back to London.
Wellington: If she does decide to come here I will protect her Uxbridge. One of my important duties is to protect my family. Even if it means sacrificing myself.

Lord Uxbridge quietly sighs to himself and he starts speaking in a calm and pleasant voice.

Lord Uxbridge: Sir the chance of her coming here is low. She has your children to take care of.
Wellington: Your right Uxbridge...
Lord Uxbridge: You will see her once the war is over...Now, please eat something and take care of yourself, sir.
Wellington: Fine...

Lord Uxbridge places the bowl of soup and the cup of tea down on the desk. Wellington awkwardly stares at Lord Uxbridge. Lord Uxbridge starts speaking in a confused tone.

Lord Uxbridge: Is there something wrong sir?
Wellington: I prefer to eat alone Uxbridge...Unless I'm with my family.
Lord Uxbridge: Yes but it seems in the past 3 days every time I left you alone to eat you never ate the food. You just had the tea and sometimes complained about the amount of sugar in it.
Wellington: Look I don't want you watching me eat...It's awkward.
Lord Uxbridge: And I want you to eat something.
Wellington: Uxbridge, please just go do your duties I don't need you staring at me while I eat.

Lord Uxbridge awkwardly stares at the ground and Wellington quietly sighs to himself out of slight frustration. Wellington starts speaking in a slightly irritated tone.

Wellington: That doesn't count...Stop joking around Uxbridge. Please just leave me to eat in peace Uxbridge.
Lord Uxbridge: Sorry sir.

Lord Uxbridge awkwardly leaves the tent to go do his duties. A couple of hours later Voltaire is peacefully sitting on a hill leaning up against a tree. He is also cheerfully writing a page for his story.

Suddenly he hears someone walking toward him along with a confused and slightly irritated voice. Voltaire looks up and notices Henry Wellesley walking toward him.

Henry Wellesley: Who are you?
Voltaire: I don't take orders from you I'm not a soldier I'm just a poet.
Henry Wellesley: Stupid Frenchman you should be glad that I don't just kill you.
Voltaire: What reason do you have to kill me...I'm not a spy if that's what you are thinking.
Henry Wellesley: Why are you here then?
Voltaire: I'm here with the Prussian King. I'm his friend sir.
Henry Wellesley: So this silly Prussian King is friends with the enemy.

Voltaire grabs his pistol and points it at Henry Wellesley. Henry Wellesley starts speaking in a tone full of shock and confusion.

Henry Wellesley: Why do you have a gun!?
Voltaire: To defend myself from people who want to wish harm upon me.
Henry Wellesley: Also how dare you aim it at me! Lower your weapon!
Voltaire: Stop threatening me for no reason...I am not here to harm anyone unless they harm me.
Henry Wellesley: Lower your weapon!
Voltaire: No not until you stop threatening me, sir.

Henry Wellesley suddenly feels something touch the back of his head along with the sound of a small click. Henry freezes in place as he hears a calm and stern voice along with a hand firmly grabbing his left shoulder.

Frederick: You hurt him I kill you...You understand me.
Henry Wellesley: The devil are you?
Frederick: I'm the King of Prussia...
Henry Wellesley: Shit...
Frederick: What's your name sir...
Henry Wellesley: General Henry Wellesley...
Frederick: I'm assuming that you are the Duke's brother...
Henry Wellesley: Yes...Yes, I am his brother.
Frederick: I'm assuming that he told you not to threaten my friend?

Henry Wellesley: No...He didn't tell me.
Frederick: Well now you know...So I suggest you leave now General and stay away from my friend.
Henry Wellesley: Yes...Your Majesty...

Frederick puts his pistol away and lets go of Henry Wellesley's shoulder. Henry Wellesley awkwardly walks off back to the British camp. Voltaire puts his pistol away and Frederick calmly walks over to Voltaire.

Frederick sits down next to Voltaire and Voltaire smiles at Frederick. Voltaire starts speaking in a cheerful voice.

Voltaire: Thank you, my love.
Frederick: I'm always here to protect you. I won't let anything else happen to you, Voltaire.
Voltaire: I thank you for protecting me.
Frederick: I will always protect you until the end...Until we part in death.
Voltaire: You promise that I won't lose you.
Frederick: I promise Voltaire...

Frederick gently kisses Voltaire on the lips. Then he starts speaking in a soft and warm voice.

Frederick: You will not lose me in this war. I also hope that you will be safe and that I don't lose you.
Voltaire: Frederick you won't lose me...
Frederick: Do you want me to stay here for a while?
Voltaire: I thought that you would have duties to attend?
Frederick: No I'm free right now Voltaire. I shall stay with you I don't want you to be alone. I know that you don't like being alone.
Voltaire: Alright.

Meanwhile, in the British camp, Wellington is sitting at his desk glancing down at his hands.

*Wellington in thought*

I'm not sure what to do...

Why am I questioning Henry's loyalty to me?

That nightmare wasn't real...

But why do I question his loyalty?

Would he really betray me?

Would he really join the French just to get his revenge?

I'm tired of this mess.

I can't even talk to Henry about this. Because he just wants to be horrible to me and see me hurt.

I just want this situation to be over. But I don't know what to do...I feel powerless.

Henry won't listen to me...

Maybe it is my fault...

No Arthur it's not your fault...

I'm sure that there is a way to fix this...

How could I fix this?

What can I do?

Lord Uxbridge suddenly enters the tent and Wellington looks up and awkwardly stares. Lord Uxbridge starts speaking in a calm but serious voice.

Lord Uxbridge: Sir are you alright?
Wellington: Just thinking Uxbridge...
Lord Uxbridge: You seem worried sir. What is wrong?
Wellington: I'm starting to question the loyalty of my brother...
Lord Uxbridge: Why is that sir?
Wellington: Isn't it obvious Uxbridge...He could have killed me. I can't trust him anymore. His loyalty is important to me and if he chooses to betray me I don't know what I will do.
Lord Uxbridge: He wouldn't betray you would he?
Wellington: At this point, I am unsure about that.

Lord Uxbridge: I understand sir...
Wellington: I just don't want to lose him he is my brother and I still love him.
Lord Uxbridge: I know sir...
Wellington: I need to think.
Lord Uxbridge: I shall leave you to think sir.
Wellington: Thank you Uxbridge.

Lord Uxbridge calmly exits the tent leaving Wellington to think. Wellington gently puts his hand on his cheek with the scar on it. Closing his eyes he begins to reflect on that day and that moment.

He remembers the emotions he was feeling. The fiery rage that he unleashed upon Henry in that moment. The pain that he felt as his brother struck him and made him bleed. Along with the dark gloomy shadow of sadness that came over him after the fight.

Opening his eyes he awkwardly stares at Benedict Fraser who he didn't notice enter the tent. Benedict Fraser starts speaking in a calm and slightly confused voice.

Benedict Fraser: Are you alright sir?
Wellington: I'm fine I just didn't sleep well and I have a lot of things to think about.
Benedict Fraser: I see.
Wellington: Why are you here? Also, please don't sneak up on me again.
Benedict Fraser: I just remembered that I noticed something a couple of hours ago.
Wellington: What did you notice and is it important?
Benedict Fraser: It seems that your brother was threatening the Prussian King's friend sir...
Wellington: I will talk to him soon...Besides I need to talk to him about other things as well.

Benedict Fraser: I see.
Wellington: Thank you for reporting this to me you may leave now.
Benedict Fraser: Yes sir.

Benedict Fraser calmly exits the tent and Wellington sighs out of slight annoyance.

*Wellington in thought*

He is trying to get me in trouble with the Prussian King again...

Damn him...

I don't want to lose this alliance. Because of my brother's stupidity...

I love him but he can be utterly stupid at times.

His foolishness annoys me...

But I have been able to handle it for a while.

But now I'm questioning his loyalty, especially after what he did to me.

I'm his brother...But I'm also his commander and he struck me.

I need to get some work done before I go see Henry...

Wellington grabs an important paper from the pile of papers and begins carefully reading it. A couple of hours later Wellington is outside of his tent and is carefully getting on his horse.

Wellington: Don't try anything funny boy. I don't want to look ridiculous. Now time to go find my dearest brother...

Wellington begins calmly searching around the camp trying to find Henry. A few minutes later he notices Henry Wellesley sitting on his horse on a nearby hill.

Wellington quickly trots over to Henry who has a look of slight annoyance on his face. Wellington starts speaking in a calm but serious voice.

Wellington: Henry I need to talk to you...
Henry Wellesley: I know what you need to talk about...I heard your conversation with that bloody twat. You question my loyalty!
Wellington: Henry I don't want to fight, please...I just want to do this calmly.

Henry Wellesley sighs out of frustration and then he starts speaking in an enraged voice.

Henry Wellesley: Why would you question the loyalty of your brother!?
Wellington: Because you struck me, Henry. You struck me and another officer. You also tried to kill me.
Henry Wellesley: You also punished me and humiliated me!
Wellington: I had to protect my reputation.
Henry Wellesley: Reputation! Is that all you care about!? Do you care about your family!?
Wellington: Yes Henry and I still love you as my brother...
Henry Wellesley: I hate you...You don't care about me. I use to be your second in command! But now I'm nothing I'm just another one of your Generals who serves under you!

Wellington feels some tears gently streaming down his face. Henry continues yelling at Wellington with pure rage and hatred.

Henry Wellesley: I have always been in your shadow! Just some nobody General who is the commander's brother.
Wellington: Henry I'm sorry that I wasn't there for you...
Henry Wellesley: Sorry doesn't cut it, Arthur! Stop trying to apologise about something that you can't fix! What is done is done it can't be changed!
Wellington: Henry, please forgive me.
Henry Wellesley: No I don't forgive you I never will...
Wellington: You are my brother and I still love you and I know that I should have been there.
Henry Wellesley: Stop trying to make me change my mind about what you did!

Wellington: Henry...
Henry Wellesley: Just shut up you bastard!
Wellington: Henry please I just want to talk.
Henry Wellesley: No! We are not going to talk about this anymore and I don't want to see you again!
Wellington: Wait what!? Henry no you are not leaving!
Henry Wellesley: Just go back to your camp Arthur I don't want to see you in my life again!
Wellington: Henry don't do this!

Henry Wellesley quickly gallops off on his horse. Wellington signals to Copenhagen to move forward. Copenhagen begins galloping forward and suddenly Wellington hears someone yelling behind him.

Winston Carrington: Sir what's going on!?
Wellington: I'm trying to stop my brother from running away Lieutenant General Carrington! Also, why are you following me!?
Winston Carrington: Well I'm here to help sir!
Wellington: Fine but please don't hurt my brother I want to speak to him and hopefully sort out this madness!
Winston Carrington: I have a feeling that it might be too late for that sir!
Wellington: No it's not! Now listen to me you take the left and I take the right we need to try to slow him down.
Winston Carrington: Yes sir!

They both veer off and a few minutes later Wellington catches up to Henry. Wellington starts speaking in a commanding voice.

Wellington: Henry slow down! I just want to talk!
Henry Wellesley: Just stop following me go back to the camp Arthur! I don't want to talk to you or see you again!
Wellington: I want to sort this situation out!
Henry Wellesley: Arthur you can't fix this mess you have created! Now just go back to the camp and forget about it and leave me alone! Tell William and Richard that I also don't wish to speak to them either or be invited to Richard's silly little dinner party!
Wellington: Henry! William and Richard have done nothing wrong you can't just expect me to tell them that!

Henry Wellesley: William doesn't care about me and he enjoys fucking smacking me with his newspaper. Along with just getting drunk! It seems that Richard is just oblivious to my pain!
Wellington: They do care Henry! I care about you!

Henry Wellesley draws his sabre and he glares at Wellington. Wellington calmly draws his sabre and he starts speaking in a calm and serious voice.

Wellington: Henry I don't want to hurt you...
Henry Wellesley: Are you seriously scared to fight me, Arthur!? What happened to the young brave man you use to be!
Wellington: Bravery gets you killed! You are also my brother and I love you and never in my life would I dare to harm you.
Henry Wellesley: Stop saying that you love me when you clearly don't care about me!

Henry Wellesley violently swings his sabre and Wellington quickly blocks it. Wellington then flings Henry's sabre out of his hand causing it to land on the ground behind them. Wellington calmly puts his sabre back in his sheath. Henry Wellesley starts speaking in an irritated tone.

Henry Wellesley: Just leave me alone Arthur and stay out of my life!
Wellington: No I'm not leaving you alone! I'm here for you Henry!

Henry Wellesley suddenly grabs his pistol and points it at Wellington. Wellington starts speaking in a calm and slightly nervous voice.

Wellington: Don't Henry think about what you are doing!
Henry Wellesley: I hate you!
Wellington: Henry you will regret it if you do this!
Henry Wellesley: I don't care I have already lost a lot!
Wellington: Henry this is madness!
Henry Wellesley: I don't care just get out of my life you stupid bastard!

Henry Wellesley suddenly shoots Wellington. Wellington falls off his horse and hits the ground quite hard. Wellington suddenly hears someone running over to him along with an extremely panicked voice.

Winston Carrington: Sir!

Winston Carrington kneels down beside Wellington. Winston Carrington continues speaking in a panicked voice.

Winston Carrington: Sir, please speak to me! Don't you dare die! I should have done something! But you told me not to hurt him! I'm such a fool!

Winston Carrington starts crying out of sadness and nervousness. Wellington starts speaking in a calm and quiet voice.

Wellington: Your not a fool...I'm the one who decided to go after him...
Winston Carrington: I should have done something!
Wellington: Lieutenant General Carrington listen to me...
Winston Carrington: Yes sir?
Wellington: Just calm yourself and take me to the doctor...
Winston Carrington: Yes sir...Are you going to be alright?
Wellington: I don't think he shot me in a fatal place. Just get me to the doctor...
Winston Carrington: Yes sir.

Winston Carrington gently picks Wellington up and begins carrying him to the camp. Wellington suddenly blacks out. Wellington then opens his eyes and he notices that he is in his brother's castle. Suddenly he hears the sound of a violin echoing throughout the hallway.

Wellington begins cautiously walking down the hallway following the peaceful sound of the violin. Wellington starts speaking in a calm and slightly nervous voice.

Wellington: Who's there? Why are you in my brother's castle?

There is no reply and the music continues. Wellington continues walking and he notices that the sound of the music is getting louder.

Wellington: Answer me! Why are you here!?

The music stops and Wellington awkwardly stands in the hallway. Suddenly Wellington hears a sword being drawn behind him along with a commanding voice.

???: Who are you and why are you in my castle!?

Wellington turns around and he notices the familiar man that is standing in front of him holding a very familiar cane sword. Wellington smiles and he starts speaking in a calm and pleasant voice.

Wellington: No need to kill me, father.
Garret Wellesley: Arthur?
Wellington: Yes, it's me. Your so called awkward child.
Garret Wellesley: Goodness I have to say that you have gotten taller since I last saw you.
Wellington: Well I was only twelve when I last saw you.
Garret Wellesley: Do you still play the violin?
Wellington: No not anymore...I might have burnt them all.
Garret Wellesley: Arthur Wellesley! Some of those were my violins!
Wellington: Oh...Sorry, father. Also, where am I? Am I dead?
Garret Wellesley: No your not this is all in your head.

Wellington: Sorry about the violins...
Garret Wellesley: What's the point of apologising to me. When I'm already dead and the violins are burnt.
Wellington: Because I wanted to apologise.
Garret Wellesley: Come let's sit down I can tell that you want to talk to me.
Wellington: Alright...

Wellington and Garret Wellesley calmly enter the room. Wellington calmly sits down in one of the wooden seats and awkwardly stares at the floor. Garret Wellesley sits down and gently picks up his violin and begins playing a quiet and soft tune.

Wellington begins awkwardly fidgeting with his ring. Garret Wellesley starts speaking in a calm and serious voice.

Garret Wellesley: Well what's been going on since I have been gone?
Wellington: A war in Europe. I've been fighting in it for a while now. I also have a very loving wife and two children. I have also earned the title Duke of Wellington. I'm also the commander of the British Army.
Garret Wellesley: Jesus Christ...I don't know what to say except that I'm very proud of you Arthur. Even though you did burn my violins.
Wellington: Thank you, father...
Garret Wellesley: There is something else that you need to tell me isn't there?

Tears start forming in Wellington's eyes and he starts quietly sobbing. Garret Wellesley stops playing his violin and gently puts it down beside him. Then he starts speaking in a warm and soothing voice.

Garret Wellesley: What's wrong my dear boy?
Wellington: Henry betrayed me...He hates me...
Garret Wellesley: But you and Henry had such a close relationship and you deeply cared about him. What happened Arthur?
Wellington: He blames me for everything...It's my fault.
Garret Wellesley: Arthur what happened? You can tell me.
Wellington: Henry's wife left him for another man...Henry was quite upset. I tried to be there for him but I couldn't be there and he blames me...

Garret Wellesley: Why couldn't you be there Arthur?
Wellington: I had to do my duty and go fight in the war in Spain...
Garret Wellesley: War is hard to stop and sometimes you do have to go and fight. But after war peace always comes eventually. Although sometimes the price to pay for peace can be quite great...
Wellington: I tried to talk with him. But he didn't listen he hates me...He betrayed me. He hurt me. I don't know what to do now...I feel like I'm broken.
Garret Wellesley: You did your best and that's probably all you could have done to try and repair your relationship with Henry. But you should take care of yourself and calm your mind and rest.
Wellington: Yes father...

Wellington suddenly hears a familiar voice and he begins to wake up.

Lord Uxbridge: Sir are you alright?

Wellington slowly opens his eyes and he notices a glowing lantern sitting beside him. He stares at Lord Uxbridge with slight confusion and he starts speaking in a confused voice.

Wellington: What time is it?
Lord Uxbridge: 9:15 sir.
Wellington: Well, I guess I should be heading back to my tent Uxbridge...There is work to do.
Lord Uxbridge: Sir you should really be resting.

Suddenly a man with short jet black hair, hazel eyes and a recently trimmed moustache walks over. He then starts speaking in a calm and pleasant voice.

???: Lord Uxbridge is right Your Grace.
Wellington: Well what is wrong doctor Cullimore?
Doctor Cullimore: Well first of all I had to remove a pistol bullet. Your lucky it wasn't in a place where it could have killed you. Second of all your left arm is broken and third of all a couple of your ribs are cracked. So I suggest resting sir.
Wellington: But I have work that needs to be done.
Lord Uxbridge: I'll take care of it, sir.
Wellington: What happened to my brother? What happened to Henry!?
Lord Uxbridge: I think he got away sir...according to Lieutenant General Carrington and his scouts...
Wellington: This is my fault...
Lord Uxbridge: Stop blaming yourself sir and get some rest...

Wellington: I'm worried about him what if he gets himself killed by the French!? I still love him even if he has betrayed me and doesn't wish to speak to me!
Lord Uxbridge: You are not going to search for him sir he tried to kill you! Also, you need to rest.
Doctor Cullimore: Again Lord Uxbridge is right Your Grace...You do need rest.
Wellington: Fine but if someone does find him tell them to bring him to me.
Lord Uxbridge: Yes sir.
Wellington: Goodnight Uxbridge...
Lord Uxbridge: Goodnight sir.

Lord Uxbridge calmly leaves the tent and Wellington stares at the top of the tent. Doctor Cullimore starts speaking in a calm and pleasant voice.

Doctor Cullimore: I also noticed that you didn't look well when you came in here. Lord Uxbridge told me that you hadn't been eating for 3 days. I might have allowed him to feed you some soup sir just to make you feel better.
Wellington: I was just upset that's all...Also, I can't believe that you allowed him to feed me like a child!
Doctor Cullimore: Well it was for your own good Lord Uxbridge didn't want you starving yourself anymore.
Wellington: He better not do that again.
Doctor Cullimore: I'm sure he won't. Now get some rest.
Wellington: Put the lantern out I can't sleep with a lantern on...
Doctor Cullimore: Yes Your Grace.

Doctor Cullimore gently grabs the lantern and opens it up and blows it out. Closing it up he then gently puts it back down on the nearby table. Doctor Cullimore then starts speaking in a slightly cheerful voice.

Doctor Cullimore: Goodnight Your Grace.
Wellington: Goodnight doctor.

Doctor Cullimore quietly leaves the tent and Wellington slowly closes his eyes and enters a deep and peaceful sleep.

To be Continued...
