The Calm before the Storm

It is almost sunset and the carriage that Wellington and Lord Uxbridge are in has just arrived in Copenhagen. Lord Uxbridge gently nudges Wellington to get him to wake up. But Wellington ignores him and continues sleeping.

Lord Uxbridge: Wake up sir.

Lord Uxbridge gently nudges Wellington again trying to wake him.

Wellington: Not now Kitty let me sleep...
Lord Uxbridge: Wake up sir Arthur!
Wellington: Not now I'm tired...
Lord Uxbridge: Jesus Christ...Sir Arthur for the love of God wake up!

Wellington slowly opens his eyes and he stares at Lord Uxbridge with slight confusion.

Wellington: What is it Uxbridge?
Lord Uxbridge: We have arrived in Copenhagen...We are heading to the docks now.
Wellington: I was having a nice dream Uxbridge...
Lord Uxbridge: I know sir...I could tell. You were talking to Kitty...
Wellington: I miss her...
Lord Uxbridge: You will return to her sir. Don't worry so much sir.
Wellington: You're sounding like Kitty...
Lord Uxbridge: How are you feeling did you get enough sleep?
Wellington: Now you're worrying about me.
Lord Uxbridge: Well I know what you are like when you don't get enough sleep.
Wellington: I know...And yes I did get enough sleep.
Lord Uxbridge: Sorry for disturbing you...
Wellington: No Uxbridge it's fine.

Meanwhile, on one of the British ships, Vice-Admiral Nelson is looking through his spyglass. Suddenly a man with blonde hair and brown eyes who is wearing a British Navy uniform walks up to Nelson.

Horatio Nelson: Where are they?
Thomas Hardy: Where is who?
Horatio Nelson: Jesus Christ Hardy don't sneak up on me!
Thomas Hardy: Sorry sir, I just noticed that you were out here trying to find something or someone.
Horatio Nelson: I'm trying to find Wellington. They have been gone for too long.
Thomas Hardy: It's only been three days sir.
Horatio Nelson: He said two days. Then he would be back.

Hardy suddenly notices the carriage in the distance.

Thomas Hardy: I see something.
Horatio Nelson: Where?

Hardy notices that Nelson is looking through his spyglass with his blind eye. Hardy gently grabs the spyglass and he puts it to Nelsons left eye. Nelson gently holds the spyglass and he stares at the carriage through his spyglass.

Horatio Nelson: Jesus Christ...Thanks, Hardy.
Thomas Hardy: It's fine sir.
Horatio Nelson: I'm just use to looking through my spyglass with my right eye.
Thomas Hardy: I can tell sir.
Horatio Nelson: Hardy.
Thomas Hardy: Yes sir?
Horatio Nelson: Get me some Brandy.
Thomas Hardy: For you sir?
Horatio Nelson: No not for me for Wellington.
Thomas Hardy: Yes sir.

Hardy walks off to go get some Brandy.

Lennox Fraser: The commander is back!
Benedict Fraser: Wellington is back!

Suddenly they smash their empty glass bottles on the side of the ship. Horatio Nelson suddenly puts his spyglass back on his belt. Then he turns around and stares at them both.

Horatio Nelson: Boys. Stop it.
Lennox Fraser: Ben let's go get some more Brandy.
Benedict Fraser: Yes.

Benedict and Lennox Fraser walk off to go get some more Brandy. Hardy suddenly walks over with the bottle of Brandy.

Horatio Nelson: Thanks, Hardy.
Thomas Hardy: You're welcome sir.
Horatio Nelson: Jesus Christ I prefer it when those two aren't so drunk.
Thomas Hardy: Who sir?
Horatio Nelson: Benedict and Lennox Fraser. They are so irritating when they are drunk.
Thomas Hardy: They drink too much...

They both look down at the docks and notice Wellington and Lord Uxbridge walking over.

Horatio Nelson: Evening Wellington and Lord Uxbridge.
Thomas Hardy: Evening you two.
Wellington: Evening.
Lord Uxbridge: Evening.
Horatio Nelson: Wellington I saved you some Brandy as promised.
Wellington: Thank You, Nelson.
Horatio Nelson: Now come tell me the news.
Wellington: Alright.

Wellington and Lord Uxbridge get on the ship. Nelson looks at Wellingtons uniform and he notices the bullet holes. He stares at Wellington with concern and slight confusion.

Horatio Nelson: What happened did you get in a gunfight or something?
Wellington: I'll explain.
Lord Uxbridge: I'm going to go sleep, sir.
Wellington: Alright good night Uxbridge.

Lord Uxbridge walks off to go to bed. Thomas Hardy suddenly hands Wellington the bottle of Brandy. Wellington gently grabs the bottle.

Wellington: Thanks, Hardy.
Thomas Hardy: You're welcome Wellington.
Horatio Nelson: Hardy?
Thomas Hardy: Yes sir?
Horatio Nelson: Get me some wine, please.
Thomas Hardy: Yes sir.

Hardy walks off to go get some wine for Nelson.

Horatio Nelson: Come let's talk Wellesley.
Wellington: Alright Nelson.

Nelson and Wellington walk to the front of the ship and they stare out at the fleet of ships. They hear bagpipes and singing in the distance.

Horatio Nelson: So what happened Wellesley you look like you have been in a gunfight.
Wellington: Well when we got there this Prussian Prince who is heir to the throne attacked me.
Horatio Nelson: What was his reason?
Wellington: He attacked me because he thought I was one of the ones to blame for the loss of his father. He lost his father to the Russians and he blamed me because the British Army didn't help the Prussian Army in the fight against Russia.
Horatio Nelson: Jesus Christ...
Wellington: Nelson I'm fine...
Horatio Nelson: Did he apologise for his actions?
Wellington: Yes even though it took a couple of days.
Horatio Nelson: What's the situation with the Prussian King?
Wellington: He's going to help us he's planning to send 110,000 men to help us.
Horatio Nelson: Too bad, I can't join you in this battle. I will be heading back to England once you and your boys are ready to go.
Wellington: It's fine Nelson besides I can tell that you don't want to deal with my men for much longer.
Horatio Nelson: I've had to deal with worse Wellesley.
Wellington: I know.
Horatio Nelson: How was Lieutenant Sundermann?
Wellington: He seemed happy to see me. Speaking of Lieutenant Sundermann I have a letter to give to Colonel Fraser. Have you seen him?
Horatio Nelson: Yes I have seen him. But I don't know where he went. Also if you are going to go see him he is quite drunk just warning you.
Wellington: I can handle it...
Horatio Nelson: Possibly check the back of the ship. He might be there.
Wellington: Alright.
Horatio Nelson: Please don't forget to enjoy your night Wellesley. We are trying to have a good time before the war.
Wellington: Yes I know Nelson. I will enjoy my night. Now I must deliver this letter to Colonel Fraser.
Horatio Nelson: Alright.

Wellington walks to the back of the ship and he notices Colonel Fraser sitting on the deck drinking Brandy. He walks up to him and Colonel Fraser stares at him.

Benedict Fraser: What is it, sir?
Wellington: I have something important to give you it's from Lieutenant Sundermann.
Benedict Fraser: I see.

Wellington takes the letter out of his pocket and hands it to Colonel Fraser.

Benedict Fraser: Are you, alright sir you look like you were in a gunfight.
Wellington: I was but I'm fine. I've had worse than a couple of bullet wounds Colonel.

Colonel Fraser stares at the bottle of Brandy in Wellington's hand.

Benedict Fraser: Are you going to drink that?
Wellington: Yes, I am sir.

Wellington opens the bottle of Brandy and he starts drinking it.

Benedict Fraser: Enjoy your night sir. Also don't drink too much otherwise you will feel like absolute shit in the morning.
Wellington: I won't.
Benedict Fraser: Go dance or something like my cousin.
Wellington: I don't dance unless it's with my wife.
Benedict Fraser: I also don't dance often unless I'm stupidly drunk, sir.
Wellington: Don't forget to read the letter, sir.
Benedict Fraser: I won't sir. Now go enjoy your night.
Wellington: Alright I will.

Wellington promptly walks off to the front of the ship. He suddenly notices three men sitting on the deck. One with light brown hair and green eyes. Another with ginger hair and blue eyes. Another with black hair and blue eyes. All of them are wearing British Cavalry uniforms. The man with light brown hair and green eyes speaks up.

Ronnie Watson: Evening sir.

Wellington notices that Ronnie Watson is holding a rifle in his hands. He stares at it with slight confusion.

Wellington: Where did you get that sir?
Ronnie Watson: A friend gave it to me to look after sir.
Wellington: I see...Well, don't forget to give it back to him then.
Ronnie Watson: I won't sir.
Wellington: Have a good evening Captain...

Wellington walks off. The man with black hair and blue eyes speaks up.

Jensen Pearce: You did not just lie to Wellington. Bloody Hell.
Ronnie Watson: Oh yes I did Jensen.
Jensen Pearce: What the hell are you going to do if Wellington finds out you stole the rifle.
Ronnie Watson: He won't find out...
Jensen Pearce: But what if Lawrence tells him.
Ronnie Watson: He won't fucking do it, Jensen.
Jensen Pearce: What if he fucking does!?

The man with ginger hair and blue eyes speaks up.

Cameron Russell: Jesus Christ relax Jensen. Lawrence won't fucking tell Wellington that Ronnie stole his rifle.
Ronnie Watson: Cam is right Jensen.
Jensen Pearce: Fucking hell why did you have to lie to Wellington?
Ronnie Watson: I don't want to get in trouble Jensen. I just became a Captain and I'm not planning on losing my rank. Because of some fucking annoying bastard like Lawrence.
Jensen Pearce: Fuck...
Ronnie Watson: Jensen go get us some more wine.
Jensen Pearce: Yes Captain...

Jensen Pearce gets up and walks off to go get some more wine.

Ronnie Watson: Where is your brother Cam?
Cameron Russell: He's on a different ship he's probably dancing with his friends and getting stupidly drunk.
Ronnie Watson: Why aren't you with him?
Cameron Russell: I prefer not to dance in public...I'm fucking shit at dancing. Even though Preston tried to teach me I'm still shit at it.
Ronnie Watson: I can't dance that well either Cam. Besides at a party, I prefer to talk to friends or get drunk until I fucking pass out on the floor.

Cameron Russell and Ronnie Watson start laughing a lot.

Cameron Russell: Jesus fucking Christ how much do you drink.
Ronnie Watson: To be honest I don't know!

Cameron and Ronnie suddenly grab two empty wine bottles and they smash them on the side of the ship.

Ronnie Watson: I don't care how shit I feel in the morning.
Cameron Russell: Me neither.

Jensen Pearce suddenly walks over with three bottles of wine in his hands. He hands one to Ronnie and one to Cameron. He then sits down next to Ronnie. They all open their bottles of wine and they gently knock the wine bottles together.

Ronnie Watson: Cheers to a glorious victory!
Cameron Russell: Long live our glorious King!
Jensen Pearce: Down with the French Empire!

They all start drinking their wine. Meanwhile, at the front of the ship, Wellington walks up to Nelson who is looking out at the ocean.

Wellington: Nelson...
Horatio Nelson: Yes Wellesley?
Wellington: I'm worried...
Horatio Nelson: About what?
Wellington: I'm worried that my plans won't work out...I'm worried that I will get myself killed.
Horatio Nelson: Wellesley I have felt this same feeling a lot. Especially at Trafalgar...I almost got myself killed.
Wellington: I know you told me. And Hardy told me...
Horatio Nelson: Of course, Hardy told you as well. He is my closest friend. Just like you Wellesley.
Wellington: I'm worried about what will happen to my wife if I get myself killed.
Horatio Nelson: Nothing will happen to her and nothing will happen to your boys. You will return to her Wellesley just like I said. Don't worry.
Wellington: I understand Nelson.
Horatio Nelson: How are your boys?
Wellington: Little Arthur is well he likes pretending he's a soldier. Charles is the mischievous one.
Horatio Nelson: I'm sure if they become soldiers they would be great commanders like you Wellesley.
Wellington: How's your boy?
Horatio Nelson: He's not a boy Wellesley he's a man. He's a soldier in the navy. I have to deal with him sometimes.
Wellington: Where is he I want to see him.
Horatio Nelson: Fine...fine I'll go find him.
Wellington: Alright.

Horatio Nelson walks off leaving Wellington to gaze out at the ocean. Wellington drinks some more Brandy and he quietly sighs to himself.

A few minutes later Horatio Nelson returns with his son.

Josiah Nelson: Who do you want me to see father...
Horatio Nelson: One of my friend's son...The Duke of Wellington.
Josiah Nelson: Wait your friends with the Duke of Wellington.
Horatio Nelson: Yes I've known him for 10 years.

Wellington hears the conversation and he turns around and stares at the younger man next to Horatio Nelson. He notices that the younger man looks very similar to his father with short blonde hair and blue eyes.

Horatio Nelson: Go ahead Josiah go see him.
Josiah Nelson: Alright...

Josiah Nelson walks up to Wellington.

Josiah Nelson: Hello your grace...
Wellington: Hello Josiah it's nice to meet you.
Josiah Nelson: I have heard about your battles and the many victories. But I didn't know that you are friends with my father. It's an honour to be in your presence, your grace.
Wellington: The pleasure is mine.
Josiah Nelson: I hope this battle goes well for you your grace.
Wellington: I also hope this battle goes well Josiah.
Josiah Nelson: I also hope you enjoy this night your grace. It's the night before the start of a glorious battle.
Wellington: I will enjoy this night Josiah.
Josiah Nelson: Now I hope you don't mind I must get back to my duties. I will possibly see you later your grace.
Wellington: Alright...

Josiah Nelson walks off and Horatio Nelson walks up to Wellington.

Horatio Nelson: He's such a busy man.
Wellington: Just like you.
Horatio Nelson: Yes just like me. I try to tell him to not work too hard.
Wellington: I see.
Horatio Nelson: You seem less worried Wellesley...
Wellington: I guess talking about my problems helps.
Horatio Nelson: Trust me it does sometimes help to talk about your problems. Now speaking of duties I need to go do something. Enjoy your night Wellesley after all this night is the calm before the storm.

Horatio Nelson walks off leaving Wellington to stare out at the ocean.

A few hours later it is now midnight.

Wellington is lying in bed trying to go to sleep. He slowly closes his eyes goes to sleep and enters his dreams. Wellington slowly opens his eyes and he notices that he is at his home in his bed. Kitty suddenly enters the room and she smiles at him.

Wellington: Kitty I'm pleased to see you.
Kitty: You realise that's it's already noon right.
Wellington: Sorry...Lady Wellesley.

Wellington smirks.
Kitty: Just get out of bed you cheeky but clever man.

Wellington quietly laughs.
Wellington: Me cheeky I doubt it.
Kitty: You are so.
Wellington: Alright fine I'll get out of bed. But also please let me get my clothes on.
Kitty: Yes. But no need to rush the country is no longer at war and you don't need to worry about getting your work done.
Wellington: Alright...I won't rush.
Kitty: I'll leave the room so you can get changed...

Kitty leaves the room and Wellington gets out of bed. He notices the neatly folded pile of clothing at the end of the bed. He grabs his white shirt puts it on and buttons it up. He then grabs his dark blue coat and puts it on. He then grabs his white pants and puts them on.

Wellington: Kitty?
Kitty: Yes?
Wellington: Where are my boots?
Kitty: Oh you left them out here I'll bring them in for you.

Kitty suddenly enters the room with a pair of black shiny boots in her hands. She walks over to Wellington and she gently hands them to him. He then sits down on the bed and starts putting his boots on.

Wellington: Thanks, Kitty.
Kitty: You're welcome...

Wellington gets up off the bed and walks over to Kitty. He suddenly hugs her.

Kitty: Are you alright?
Wellington: I just shouldn't have left you to go to war. I missed you.
Kitty: It's alright you had to do your duty for the country...I also missed you, my love. The boys also missed you.
Wellington: I thought I wouldn't return to you...
Kitty: I know...I can tell that you were worried about me. Mostly worrying about what would happen to me if you know...
Wellington: I will never leave you again I promise my love.
Kitty: You won't have to anymore the country is no longer at war with France.

Kitty suddenly kisses Wellington on the lips.

Kitty: You won't have to worry so much about me anymore. You can spend as much time as you want with me now.
Wellington: Alright my love.
Kitty: Now I'm going to go make lunch you must be hungry.
Wellington: Alright.

Kitty leaves the room. Wellington suddenly hears voices telling him to wake up.

Lord Uxbridge: Wake up sir!
Horatio Nelson: Wake up Wellesley.

Wellington slowly opens his eyes and he stares at Lord Uxbridge and Horatio Nelson with confusion.

Wellington: What is it?
Lord Uxbridge: It's almost noon sir!
Wellington: Jesus Christ...
Horatio Nelson: Wellesley you should know not to oversleep.
Wellington: Look I was having a good dream. I also might have drunk too much Brandy and I feel awful.
Lord Uxbridge: Sir...
Wellington: What?
Lord Uxbridge: I suggest you get ready for today.
Wellington: Fine...Also someone, please make me some tea. I might feel less awful.
Lord Uxbridge: Alright.
Horatio Nelson: Could you also make me some tea as well Uxbridge?
Lord Uxbridge: Fine...

Lord Uxbridge walks off to go make some tea.

Horatio Nelson: How are you feeling Wellesley?
Wellington: Could be better...I definitely drank too much Brandy...
Horatio Nelson: Come let's head up. Some fresh air might do you some good Wellesley.

Wellington slowly gets out of bed he and Horatio Nelson start walking up the nearby stairs. They get to the top deck of the ship. They notice a few people are still passed out on the deck and there are many broken or empty bottles scattered across the deck.

Wellington: What happened here?
Horatio Nelson: Jesus Christ...
Wellington: I guess they got a bit too excited?
Horatio Nelson: Someone's going to have to clean this up. I am not going to have my ship be a mess.
Wellington: I understand Nelson...
Horatio Nelson: This is my favourite ship!
Wellington: Nelson relax...I understand that the Victory is your favourite ship. Don't worry the mess will be cleaned up.

Horatio Nelson starts promptly walking to the front of the ship with Wellington quickly following him.

Horatio Nelson: It better be cleaned up...Im not leaving my ship in this state.
Wellington: It will...
Horatio Nelson: Good...
Wellington: Why didn't you wake me up sooner?
Horatio Nelson: Well, I wanted to let you sleep you stayed up till midnight and you were also quite drunk.
Wellington: I understand...

Lord Uxbridge suddenly walks up to them both with two cups of tea in his hands. Wellington and Nelson both grab a cup of tea. Lord Uxbridge then walks off.

Horatio Nelson: You still seem worried Wellesley.
Wellington: Yes...It's fine though I just need to think.
Horatio Nelson: Alright. I'll leave you to think. Besides I need to find Hardy and tell him to find someone to clean up this mess.
Wellington: Alright Nelson.

Horatio Nelson walks off leaving Wellington to stare at the calm glistening ocean.

Wellington: I miss her...She appears in my dreams and my nightmares...I want this war to be over for her sake and mine. I don't want to leave her again with her knowing that the one she loves dearly might not return from battle.

Wellington listens to the small waves crashing against the ship along with the sea birds calling to each other in the distance. He slowly zones out allowing his thoughts to consume him like an ocean.
