Historical Glossary

This is a glossary for those who need help understanding the historical side of my story before you begin reading. So let's begin.

This story is set in the Napoleonic Wars which was a major conflict in Europe starting near the end of the 1700s till 1815. But this story is mainly based in 1815 just before the Battle of Waterloo which actually happens a bit later in my story compared to real life. However, some scenes or other parts go back to the end of the 1700s or the start of the 1800s. However, some characters in my story such as Voltaire, Frederick the Great and their siblings were not alive in this period. But this is historical fiction and that's a part of the fictional part. Now on to the important historical characters in my story.

Frederick the Great (Frederick): Frederick the Great was alive from 1712 to 1786. He was one of the most famous kings of Prussia. He was mostly known for winning the 7 Years War. But in my story, he is having to deal with fighting in the Napoleonic Wars to protect the Kingdom of Prussia. I have recently had an interest in Prussian history. I find his character quite interesting due to him possibly having been homosexual which during his time was probably not a normal thing.

I have also put in Frederick's older sister Wilhelmine and his younger brothers Prince Henry and Prince Augustus. Along with his father King Frederick William I and his grandfather King Frederick I. I have also put in his nephew Prince Frederick William (Fred or Prince Frederick).

Voltaire: Voltaire was alive from 1694 to 1778. He was a famous French philosopher and during his lifetime he wrote many thousands of letters, books, pamphlets, essays, poems, novels and plays. He also got to meet Frederick the Great although their friendship in real life did not end well. However, in my story, Voltaire's friendship with Frederick has grown to the point where he loves Frederick. But just letting you guys know Voltaire in real life was not homosexual he was straight.

I have also added Voltaire's sister Catherine into the story along with a certain French nobleman that was not very nice to him.

Duke of Wellington (Arthur Wellesley): Arthur Wellesley was alive from 1769 to 1852. He was the commander of the British Army during the Napoleonic Wars and was known for defeating Napoleon in the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. He also eventually became Prime Minister of Britain and Commander in Chief of the British Army. In my story, Wellington is having to deal with different events leading up to the battle compared to what happened in real life.

I will have also added in his two older brothers Richard Wellesley and William Wellesley along with one of his younger brothers Henry Wellesley. I have also added his two sons Arthur and Charles along with his wife Kitty Wellesley into the story. I also have added Lord Uxbridge who was his second in command into the story.

Lord Nelson (Horatio Nelson): Horatio Nelson was alive from 1758 to 1805. He was one of the most well-known Admirals in the British Royal Navy. He was mostly known for his victory at the Battle of the Nile and the Battle of Trafalgar where he was killed. But in my story, he survived the Battle of Trafalgar I'm not going to spoil the reason how he survived though.

I have also added in his friend Captain Thomas Hardy. Along with three fictional relatives I decided to add to the story. Josiah Nelson is his son and Lillie Nelson who is Josiah's wife and Marcel Thompson who is the older brother of Lillie Nelson. I possibly might add in Horatio Nelson's wife later on in the story.

Ok, so now I will give a brief description of the ranks in the British and Prussian Army.

Here are the ranks in the Army in order of lowest to highest.

Ensign: Lowest rank and is what soldiers start as when they join the army. They have no command.
Lieutenant: Commands a platoon.
Captain: Commands a company.
Major: Also commands a company.
Lieutenant Colonel: Commands a battalion.
Colonel: Commands a Regiment.
Brigadier: Commands a Brigade.
Major General: Commands a Division.
Lieutenant General: Commands a Corps.
General: Commands an Army
Field Marshal: Highest rank and is the commander of all the Armies.

Hopefully, this Glossary has helped you guys understand what is going on in the story and if you think I need to add more information please tell me in the comments. Now enjoy the story.
