Sense

A paw poked Redford. "Wake up!" Catface, yowled. "It's time for your hunting training!"

Redford grumbled, and got to his feet. The sky was still a dark blue color. "Ugh... Its not even dawn yet!" he complained.

"Warrior Cats wake up at dawn every day to hunt. If you were in Sunclan, you would have to wake up before dawn every day. I'm guessing that you are over six moons, and by this time you would be training to hunt and fight."

Redford looked at Shadestar with wonder. "Really?"

"Yes, they are called the Apprentices. And now that I think about it, I should train you in battle skills too if you want to survive out there." Shadestar replied. "Catface and Clawscar, go and provide us food for later while Redford trains." The two cats nodded and trotted off.

"The first skill when hunting is to use your nose above all other senses. Your ears and eyes cannot locate hidden prey, while tracing its scent will allow you to locate it quickly. Open your jaws and taste the air. What do you snell?" Shadestar asked Redford as they were in an alley.

Redford did exactly as she said. "I smell your scent, my scent and also a strange scent that smells like the mouse I ate... Is there a mouse nearby?"

Shadestar nodded. "You are correct. Now can you tell me where it is?" Redford sniffed the air again and pointed his tail at a hole in the wall. "Now, watch me as I hunt this mouse down, and note my posture." Shadestar crept towards the hole, belly barely brushing the ground. She patiently waited for a few minutes, and then a mouse crept out of thr hole, which she immediately pounced on, and did a quick nip at the spine to kill it. But before she came back to Redford, she hesitated a little before picking up the mouse. "So how was my posture like?" She asked.

"Um... You were close to the ground, and made sure that your paws and tail did not hit anything?" Redford replied.

"Good observations." Shadestar said. "Now, you try. I smell another mouse nearby, and I want you to try your best to hunt it down. Remember, this is only your first time, so it is okay to make mistakes."

They went to an alley close by where Shadestar scented the mouse. Redford crept down, avoiding whipping his tail on crinkly, and noisy twoleg items. But suddenly, he heard a crack, and realised that one of his paws have stepped on a twoleg item by accident. He heard a skittering sound when the mouse escaped from behind a monster. He growled in frustration and went back to Shadestar empty-pawed. "I'm sorry." He said sadly. "I think it's only because I have one eye..."

Shadestar looked at him, meeting his eye. "You have nothing to be sorry about, little one. This was your first time, and you were bound to make mistakes, like what happened with every single cat. Even me, Catface, Clawscar, and now, you. One-eye wasn't born with one eye, so it was harder for him to relearn how to hunt, but think about you. You are learning so quickly already! Believe in yourself and you will soon be able to catch your first prey." Redford gratefully looked at Shadestar, comforted.

"Then I will continue trying." He said.
-----
The next few days, Shadestar and Redford focused on hunting skills. Soon, Redford caught his first prey himself! Shadestar looked at Redford, eyes glowing with pride. She had known him for less than seven days, but he already felt like her own apprentice.
