Chapter 23

"You shouldn't be out here." Riuyo said worriedly, his fangs peeking out from his mouth while dripping blood.

"I'm fine. I just needed some time to heal." I replied.

"Well, we're glad you're back in top shape." Jinriu hissed slightly.

"Your scales look darker. When did you get newer scales?" I asked in surprise.

"About a few months ago. When I was constantly itching all over." He replied.

"Oh right. I hadn't noticed." I smiled.

"We'll be honored to have you fight alongside us again." Shibaki said with an approving smile.

I grinned and everyone went back to battle. Since everyone was in their legion forms, I took it easy and basically pranced around the battlefield like if I were frolicking through a meadow full of flowers. The only exception being that the flowers were dead bodies and that the gumdrop rain was their blood. Either way, it was an extremely beautiful sight that I slightly missed.

"I've never seen him like that before." Yukai said worried.

"The nightmare legion must make these guys look like baby toys because he's swinging that corpse like a stuffed animal." Kurai added before I sent several corpses flying like kites.

"Naku, if you calm down, I can give you the raspberry tarts that they took from you." Yukai joked.

I stopped in the middle of my tracks when I heard that and looked at him. "What did they do?" I asked in a low voice.

"They... took your raspberry tarts..." he replied with uncertainty of what he was doing.

I walked up to him, pulled him closely by his collar and asked the question again. This time, whispering it into his ear while my grip started to tighten.

"Yukai, I don't think it's safe to do that." Kurai said before taking several steps back for safety.

"T-they... took your tarts. The r-raspberry ones.  Those ones that had the r-red velvet mix a-and the glaze over them. The ones you had from one of your... S-spare secret stashes." He replied with total fear in his body.

I gently let go of his collar, patted off the dust from my gear, cracked a few bones while stretching and, finally, regaining my posture.

"Ah... so they decided to touch THOSE sweet and delicious tarts. One of the many things that I hold dearly in my life... ok... ok... it's all fine. I was taught to be kind and to be forgiving and turn the other cheek. It's all good... no worries." I said while trying not to go overboard.

"You had to mention raspberry." Kurai sighed and started running towards safe grounds.

"He's overreacting... everything is just FINE!!!" I yelled after finally snapping, growing out my wings and taking out nearly all the spawners in the battlefield. I drew enough attention to have the higher ups come after me.

Everything has started to get a bit more serious when the enemies started to target me in order to protect their leaders. In the middle of all this, I saw Shibaki taking a glass shard from all the corpses and putting them in special containers. Must've been for research reasons. He tends to be a really curious person, which sometimes scares me because I have no clue if he has plans for burying me or dissecting me like a science experiment. I continued dodging attacks to my best of my abilities until the ambush forced me into a dead end. From now on, it was fighting until death.

"Oh, dear me, how I wished for just one last tart to eat." I sighed as I faced the mass overkill that was waiting to happen.

I closed my eyes and welcomed death but, for some reason, it never came. I heard a lot of weapons clashing and opened my eyes to find Jinriu leading the new recruits while fighting the monsters. I felt quite relieved to see that it wasn't my time to let out my final breath yet. I picked up my swords and started to attack, pushing back some enemies and burning them to a crisp with my dragon breathing attacks.

"Don't you ever do something stupid like that for a while." Jinriu snarled while slashing some enemies.

"I didn't know what else to do. I got pretty used to running and I didn't know where else to go so I kinda panicked." I replied in a small attempt to explain myself.

"It's still too early for you to be completely dead. Even if you were dead, I'd bring you back to life just to beat the stupid out of you." Kurai growled after catching up with us.

"Besides, we wouldn't let anything like that happen to you. It would mean we were a horrible team that was unable to care for their leader." Kaizuke interrupted.

"We pushed them down to a border. They're in a dead end so I suggest we take them out." Shibaki said as he put a crystal in his gear.

"Why are you collecting them?" I asked curiously.

"Well... these crystals have an interesting feature. They aren't infused with any organ or cell tissue. Instead, they engulfed the organ and kept it preserved. To make things interesting, the preserved organ is the heart. After careful examination, the DNA tests read that these creatures are actually the deceased students that were murdered during the night classes. They're the students from the hybrid program. Even though they've lost the ability to be hybrids, they can still come back as a vampire, werewolf, dragon, siren, specter or shadow creature. They can be revived!" He explained.

"Where are the bodies? We must try this experiment immediately." I said somewhat firmly.

"They're still in the morgue. Gotsuki was supposed to bury them after her wedding." He replied.

"Where is she? I must speak with her." I sighed.

"She's with her fiancé. They were doing a wedding rehearsal that was scheduled for a half hour ago." Kurai replied.

"Get them here now." I ordered and, with my command said, they went off to get Kiru and Gotsuki for a quick and simple mid-battle meeting.
