Chapter 22

"The glass here makes this place look like a dome." Kurai marveled.

I sat down in the middle and watched as my nightmares do what they did best, torment and kill.

"Oh look! It's Kuriagi and Kaizuke down there." I said and waved down at the monstrous beasts that they had turned into.

"They look so different." Yukai said shockingly.

"They're werewolves. What were you expecting?" I glared.

"True. Then again, why did you unleash the nightmare legion?" Kurai asked.

"I felt like I was the target. So I thought the legion should take care of the enemy and do what they were born to do. It's in their nature." I replied while looking at the chaos that was unfolding.

"And you're sitting here while they risk their lives for you?" Yukai wondered.

"They're only risking getting hit by crystals. As long as they're in this form, they can't die. They can even get attacked by their mortal weaknesses and they'll still fight like if a mosquito had bitten them. While they're in legion form, I'm their source of life. Even without legion form, I'm still the reason they're alive. Once I die, so will they. Just think of it as a link that we have." I explained.

"So the enemy might know their weaknesses but they will never find the vital spot?" Kurai asked.

"Exactly. That is why I fear the results of this war. Because if I were to die at the end, so will all of the members of the legion." I replied with a sigh.

"Could you care to explain who's in it? I'm starting to worry about the results too." Yukai shuddered.

"The legion is lead by the hybrid, in this case us, as first in command. The second in command is left empty, no one knows the real reason why, only I know about it. After that, it's the six clan guards, and the best of the royal guards." I started.

"So, we're first in command?" Kurai puzzled.

"With my authority, yes. Without it, your orders will be questioned until I say the final decision on it." I replied.

"And we won't fall to second in command?" He asked.

"That place remains empty, no matter the reason. Only I can name the occupant of the space. I organized this generation of the legion when I was just three years old." I smirked as I remembered good times.

"So only the best of the clans will be in the legion?" Yukai asked.

"Only those who are chosen by me can be in it. That's why there are very few people in it. No doubt I chose the best of each clan so far. I'm only missing the final space." I sighed in boredom.

"Would it be a vampire? You have two werewolves, why not add another creature of the same clan?" Yukai asked.

"I made that special exception because Kaizuke was going to be sacrificed as a pup for a crime he wasn't guilty of. It still haunts the poor guy. Besides, I still need to find trace of the extinct clan. If I can find a member of it, all the clans will be complete and the legion would be at it's strongest." I replied.

"Well damn, Naku, just how many clans are there in total? More importantly, how many more secrets are you hiding from us? I'm starting to worry." Kurai asked in shock.

I chuckled before replying. "Only seven clans. And I lost count of my secrets."

"Possibly seven. Remember that you still don't know if that clan is still alive." Yukai corrected.

"Right. So far, the newest clans are the shadows and the specters, though Naku calls them the shadow and light clans. Then we have the dragon and siren clans, looking after the skies and seas, and, our most powerful clans, the vampire and werewolf clans which guard the lands." Kurai mentioned.

"You're supposed to know this. You're our older brother, Kurai." Yukai said in slight surprise.

"I kinda disappeared and then came back as an evil threat without any recollection of my past so... that about explains why I'm new to this." Kurai sasses back.

"The last clan was said to be either hunted into extinction, driven into exile to live somewhere that I don't know about or forced into hiding to preserve the last of the creatures. Father never talked about them, but the instructor gave me a few books to read. That's how I learned about them." I explained.

"Did it mention the name?" Kurai asked.

"Name... the clan name... I know they refer to themselves as Akumas, but the name that the books give them is the demon clan." I said as I vaguely remembered the chapter where I read about them.

"How powerful are they? Maybe, if they're still around, they can help us out in further battles." Yukai asked.

"The books don't say. All they say is that they were one of the most feared and respected clans in all known history." I shrugged.

"Then they must've been an extremely powerful clan." Kurai puzzled.

"If you guys will excuse me, I feel like I have something to do." I said and jolted away towards my room.

Once inside my room, I ran down the passage, past the guards and through the gates. I placed the flask of blood on the altar and finished another contract with the deities. The mark of the contract faded away, leaving one in the center. This one was going to be a tough one to finish. Good thing I still have about a little over a year. I walked out of my room and rushed back to the garden where everything was visible.

"How's everything going so far?" I asked as I sat back down.

"If I were to say it in your perspective, absolutely beautiful." Kurai smirked.

"Perfect! I love the sound of painful screaming during the afternoon almost as much as how I love pudding." I chuckled.

"Should we go help?" Yukai asked.

"It would be for the best." Kurai replied.

"I'm fine with helping them out. I'm all healed anyway so might as well take some weight off their shoulders." I added. With that, I grabbed my swords and we rushed out to battle once more.
