The Sacrifice

Dakota:

Well, I wasn't about to argue with Parker's orders of getting back. I was now seeing red everywhere. My nose was broken, my lip was spilt, my head felt like it had been cracked open. But I managed to slowly push myself up onto my hands and away from where the two boys faced each other.

Parker scowled at Bryan. "What do you want with them?" He spat out. Bryan simply shrugged. "What do you think, idiot? They're Audaynes. I'm here to kill them." He stated. He paused for a moment. "well, okay, I'm here to take the boy, and since I have no need for her, I'll kill the girl."

Now, I didn't exactly like being called useless, but when my uselessness was the reason someone tried to kill me, then I got slightly ticked off. However, I had a feeling saying anything would not be in my favor.

"Let them go, Bryan. They don't even know what all this is about." Parker reasoned. I couldn't agree more with him. Bryan laughed. "Yeah, I'm afraid that's not possible. But since I'm feeling merciful, fine. Take the girl. Our business is with the boy. So you and the girl can leave. But the boy is mine."

No way in hell was I going to allow this maniac to take my brother. Parker must've sensed it, for he shook his head, obstinate. "Let them both go. The boy has no idea of his powers. He's useless to you."

"Does it really look like I care? My orders were to bring him in, and that's what I'm here to do. If you stand in my way, I'll kill you too."

Wait, orders? This guy was working for someone?

I was obviously led to more cluelessness, while Parker seemed to know exactly what was going on. He took a deep breath. "You're not taking anyone."

With that, he thrust his hands forward again, blowing Bryan off by another burst of wind. The boy skid back a few meters, but regained his footing, only to hold out his palm in Parker's direction. His pal grew white hot and what I could only describe as a bolt of pure white flames shot towards my friend. I couldn't even yell out.

But Parker was quicker than I'd thought. He leapt out of the way and opened his fingers, to have another blow of wind put out the fire which had started on the table behind him. I had no idea why no one in schoo was hearing this, but it must've been another freaky thing these two did.

My problems weren't over yet.

Because just then, my brilliant brother decided it was time to gain consciousness.

"What...." He muttered groggily, holding his head. I knew he was in a lot of pain, but more than that, he seemed confused. Parker and Bryan momentarily stopped their assault on each other to look our way on hearing Knox's voice.

Oh great.

Parker sliced his hand through the air, and a stack of books flew out of the shelves and pummeled into Bryan, putting him out of action for a few moments. He then turned towards us, and ran over.

He put his hand on Knox's forehead, and his hand began to glow. Knox's eyes widened, and I knew he was thinking this was as weird as I thought it to be. "What..." he said again. I took in a sharp breath. The cut on Knox's head was visibly disappearing, and I could see now that his arm was at a normal angle.

"How are you doing all of this!?" I cried. Knox seemed too shocked to say anything. Parker didn't respond, only brought his hand to his belt and took out something. I gasped again.

"Why in the world are you carrying a knife!?"

"Dakota, shush. Knox is much better from what I can sense. You have to get him out of here. I'll take care of Bryan, but-"

He was cut off sharply as another chair slammed into him, sending him sprawling away. Bryan had recovered faster than any of us expected, and now, Parker was the wounded one.

Bryan's mouth was bleeding, and his hair was in disarray, but he otherwise looked unharmed. Poor Knox's eyes seemed to fall out of their sockets as he tried to take everything in. I wasn't in much of a state to help him.

"I'll take him, thank you very much." Bryan sniggered as he stepped towards Knox.

I don't know what came over me, but I knew one thing for sure. No one took my brother away from me. I didn't care what I had to do, and now, I didn't even think about my actions. I simply followed instinct.

I jumped up, ignoring the pain, as adrenaline coursed through me. I picked up a book lying nearby and flung it at Bryan's head. He hadn't been expecting the attack, and ducked to avoid the book, which made it easier to tackle him. I launched myself at him, punching his face and kicking everywhere.

However, once again, I was weaker than him. With a loud yell, he threw me off. I wasn't done. I stood up shakily; I was dizzy from the blood loss, and looked around for something else to throw. I hadn't seen Bryan reach out towards me. He flicked his wrist, and I flew off my feet, and rammed straight into a nearby wall.

I cracked my head on the hard surface, and slumped to the floor. I could feel myself lose control of my limbs, as darkness clouded my eyesight. I couldn't even yell out a warning to Knox before unconsciousness pulled me under.

Knox:

Have you ever felt so confused that you felt as though your head would burst and your eyeballs would pop out before your brain even took in everything? If you have, triple that sensation a few dozens of times. That's probably still not close to what I felt then.

"Dakota!" I yelled, staring at her limp form, unable to move. I couldn't even cry, this was all too much to take in. I looked at the new kid, Bryan, and Parker, who seemed to be slowly recovering.

They almost ran at each other, when I yelled (which probably wasn't a good idea, but hey, I needed to be cut some slack).

"WAIT!"

The sheer amount of panic in my voice stopped them. I could feel my hands tremble at my sides. Parker gave me a sympathetic look, but his state wasn't good. Whatever this Bryan guy had done, it had affected him pretty badly. His mouth was bleeding, and he looked exhausted.

My voice shook, which wasn't something I was proud of, but I was certifiably terrified of what was happening.

"W-What're... What're you guys... doing?" I stammered. Bryan chuckled, something which I was beginning to dislike.

"Ah, how blissfully ignorant you are. How can you possibly not know?" He asked, seeming fairly serious. I gaped at him. "How can I not know that people can move tables and knock other people out? Gee, I wonder. Its something you totally see everyday, isn't it?"

Bryan raised an eyebrow at me. "Sass isn't going to help you." He remarked.

"Listen!" Came Parker's panicked voice. "You're fight is with the Audaynes. Leave them alone, they know nothing!" Well, I agreed with him on that one. Bryan wasn't going to listen to logic, though.

He raised his hands at his sides, and suddenly it felt as though the temperature had dropped about ten degrees. It didn't stop there. It kept getting colder and colder. I could feel my teeth chattering. Parker seemed out of focus and dizzy.

Bryan clapped his hands together like he was killing a mosquito, and a shockwave blasted throughout the room. I could see the wave of pure energy as it made its way towards me.

That's when the weirdest thing of all happened.

The energy wave didn't even hit me. I raised my hand, not knowing what I was doing. It was as though my limb had a mind of its own. I held it out in front of me, palm facing forward, as the shockwave approached me. Everything fell into slow motion.

The wave dropped. It lost all energy and faded.

My jaw dropped.

What had I just done? More importantly, how had I just done that?

"What...." I muttered. Bryan laughed again. I really wanted the guy to shut up.

"A little bit of defensive magic won't do anything against me." He mocked. He picked up a book lying at his side, and held it up. It promptly burst into flames, which he hurled at me. I barely managed to dodge it, but it still singed the hair on my head.

Parker had recovered enough, but apparently he couldn't... perform, whatever it was they were doing. My mind was still spinning from having stopped that shockwave, but I pushed it to the back of my mind. Either I was going crazy, or... no there was no other explanation. I was definitely going crazy.

Parker lunged at Bryan, the old fashioned way. However, as strong as Parker was, Bryan was much more ruthless. He threw my friend against a wall, and held up a glowing red fist. Steam blew off from it, and he drove it towards Parker's face. Had the latter not moved away in time, his face would have been a puddle of brain goo.

Nevertheless, Bryan still had an advantage. Never before had I felt so utterly useless. My sister was knocked out, my best friend was getting beaten up big time, and I simply stood there, confused and frazzled.

Bryan held out his hands again, and a new wave of terror settled on my heart. Two small balls of pure white flame appeared in his hands. Parker was in no shape to move. I knew in that moment that he wouldn't be able to dodge the flames. A triumphant look crossed Bryan's face as he held out his hands.

I looked down at Parker's knife in my hands.

I did the only thing I could.

I threw the knife.

I had meant it as a distraction, but apparently Life wasn't satisfied with the mess I was in right now. The knife landed squarely in Bryan's chest.

My jaw dropped in horror. No... I couldn't... I couldn't even move. What... what had I done?

"Oh... my..." I was unable to even form proper sentences. Guilt fought for control over fear. Bryan looked down at the knife. Blood slowly dripped from his mouth as he glowered at me in hatred.

"You little..." He held out the flames towards me and my heart leapt into my throat.

Parker came from nowhere.

At first he was lying on the ground, too injured to even defend himself, the next moment, he was hurling towards Bryan. I could only watch in abject terror as he threw himself in the way of the flames.

Bryan shot the flames and the scream just reached my throat as they burst against Parker's body.

My yell was one of so many emotions, I couldn't even decipher it myself. All I knew was that my best friend had just sacrificed himself for me. But Parker wasn't done yet.

He threw his arms around Bryan, as the latter's face took on a look of surprise mingled with fear. The flames from Parker's body enveloped the both of them, as Bryan screamed. Never had I witnessed such a gruesome sight. Two people were burning to death in front of me.

I started to run towards them, when Parker held out his hand. Another gust of wind slammed into me, and I fell back. Parker was still holding Bryan, who was now panicking, but with the combined effect of the knife in his chest and the flames, he was powerless.

Parker's words cut through the screams like a knife.

"Don't let this be in vain."

He gave me one last look, before closing his eyes.

The last thing I remembered was the two of them glowing with the light and energy of a supernova, before everything turned completely white. The explosion that followed mere seconds later blew me further back than Parker's wind had, and my eyes rolled to the back of my head.

Then it became too much for me, as I joined my sister and passed out.

A/N: Hope you guys liked it! I don't know how many people have read this, but if you have, I hope this was good! I know, I killed two people in the second chapter itself, but guys, this story won't exactly be all humor and laughs. It'll have a lot of dark stuff too...

But anyways, do tell me what you guys thought! Again, the next chapter will probably clear stuff up, but for now, I hope this one was good! I don't know how I did with the action scenes, but feel free to tell me how I can improve!

Please vote and comment! It makes me so happy I can't even!

Oh and the picture is of Dakota :)
