02| The Heirs Of The Dragon

When she finally arrived to her brother's bedchamber she was surprised to find Ser Harwin Strong at the center of the room adjusting the heating chamber on one to the tables. See Harwin was a man with kind eyes and one of the few men that Daena was sure was honorable. The commander of the City Watch was practically a member of the family, he was always around and all of Rhaenyra's children had learned to care for him.

However, the commanders closeness to the princess and her children was cause for vile rumors about the princess' honor and the parentage of her two sons. For the young princes had a striking resemblance to Ser Harwin, sharing his same dark curls and brown eyes.

"Princess." The man greeted with a bow.

"Ser Harwin." Daena acknowledged as she allowed Lucery's to pull her towards the table where the heating chamber sat.

Her young brother looked up at her with excited eyes and when he gave give an encouraging nods he lifted the iron lid of the heating chamber. Inside sat a beautiful dragon egg, Daena couldn't help but smile as dragon eggs were not only very rare but they rarely hatched. It was what made dragons so magical. And she had no doubt that her brother's had chosen the perfect egg for their new sibling.

"It is beautiful Luke." She assured him as he closed the lid.

"I chose it." He replied proudly before running off to Ser Harwin. Her two brothers then began to play wrestle with the commander as she took a seat upon Lucerys' bed. She was not one to play games much and she could hardly find it in herself to think of anything else other than their mother.

It was not long before the door to the chamber opened as their mother and father stepped in with their new brother in a peaceful sleep in his arms. Daena stood with a smile, and her brothers immediately ended their game as they rushed to their mother.

"Mother... look." Lucerys exclaimed as he made rushed to the heating chamber once again to now shoe their mother the egg inside. "We chose an egg for the baby."

"Ahh. That looks like the perfect one." Their mother replied with a forced smile as she slowly walked towards the cushioned settee. The commander immediately stepped forward offering his princess an arm to help her sit.

A sigh immediately leaving her mothers lips the moment she was seated. It was clear that she was still in terrible pain and in desperate need of some rest after her labors.

"I let Luke choose." Jace declared proudly always seeking to fulfill his role as the oldest perfectly.

"Thank you, Jace." Their young brother said gratefully as they closed the lid to the heating chamber to ensure that the egg would remain in the best condition to increase its chances of hatching successfully. The princess' three oldest children each had dragon eggs that had hatched.

To some it was considered a miracle that Jacaerys and Lucerys had dragons, as some believed that their blood was not pure enough for to deserve a dragon. The vile words about her brother's worth were quickly extinguished when their dragon eggs hatched, proving that the two boys were true Targaryens.

"Not every day an egg leaves the Dragonpit, Princess. I thought it best to escort the lads." The commander declared as if he needed to give a reason as to why he had taken it upon himself to escort the two princes to do what their father should have done. If it was any other man they would have overstepped their bounds, but the truth of it was that Ser Harwin Strong was not just any man.

Rhaenyra smiled as she looked at him gratefully. "Laenor and I thank you, Commander."

"Another boy, I heard." The commander of the City Watch commented as he looked from Rhaenyra to the newborn child that was still in Her Laenor's arms.

"What a fine knight you are going to make, eh?" Her father whispered softly to her brother.

"Might I?" The commander questioned as he looked down at the newborn with tender eyes.

"Ser Harwin wishes to be introduced to Joffrey." The Princess Rhaenyra told her husband, as her daughter took a seat beside her. Daena smiled at her brother's name. Although she thought it was odd that they had chosen a name not of Valeryon origin, she also believed that it suited her baby brother perfectly.

"Of course." Laenor replied as he handed the child to the commander who although was waiting patiently, there was no finding the quiet anticipation in the man's eyes.

Now that Ser Harwin was holding her baby brother, her father pulled her close wrapping an arm around her shoulder. Daena was always left confused by the fact that her father didn't mind the closeness between her mother and the commander but knew better to question it.

"Joffrey, is it?" The commander whispered as he cradled the child.

"Father, please may I hold Joffrey?" Lucerys questioned as he attempted to reach for their little brother only to be pulled back by their father as Ser Hardin pushed his hand aside.

"No, no. Ah, ah, ah. Back to the Dragonpit for you two." Laenor instructed as held both his sons back before looking to his daughter. "That goes for you as well my girl."

Daena groaned in the most unladylike manor having planned to stay with her mother for the rest of the day.

"Enough of that." He scolded as he gestured for her to follow him.

Rhaenyra kissed the top of Daena's head as she also gave her a stern look. "Listen to your father now."

With a nod Daena stood as she joined her two brothers at the door.

"Before they send out a search party." Their father insisted as he guided them all out the door, closing it behind him leaving their mother alone with the commander and Joffery.

The Dragonpit was dark the smell of dragon fire was thick in the air, yet it always brought a sense of comfort to Daena who always anticipated any visit to he dragon, Marynax. For Targaryen's their dragon felt like an extension of themselves, a proper dragon rider bonded with their dragon completely.

Daena and Marynax were destined to be, the same fire running through both of their veins from the moment the dragon egg was placed in the young princess' cradle.

Daena stood between her two brothers as they waited for their uncles to arrive so they could begin their training. It wasn't long before Aegon and Aemond arrived with rather bored expressions on their face. Aegon undoubtedly thought that this training was above him as he was more advanced in his training. For Aemond the training sessions must have been torture as he was the only one among them that did not have a dragon of his own.

It wasn't until all five children were lined up together that the dragonkeepers brought out Jacaerys' dragon, Vermax, who was only slightly bigger than her own dragon. Their dragons were still too small to ride, but it was important to learn mastery over ones dragon first.

The oldest of the dragonkeepers took a single step forward, he was a wise man who rarely spoke. He only knew how to speak High Valyrian, the true language of the Targaryens. But it was a language that was quickly dying and that not all Targayens or Valeryons knew how to speak. It was a language that Jace continue to struggle how to speak though could understand perfectly.

"Call Vermax to heel, Prince Jacaerys." The old dragonkeeper instructed in High Valyrion as the other dragonkeepers struggled to old the young dragon who still needed to be held down my chains. Young dragons were difficult to control, though it was as her grandsire always reminded them. Control was an illusion and no dragonrider truly had full control over their dragons.

"Vermax!" Jace yelled firmly attempting to gain his dragons attention, but the young dragon had a mind of its own not paying attention to his riders command. "Vermax!"

"You must hold mastery over your dragon, my young Prince." The older man continued in the harsh tongue that was High Valyrian. "As Prince Aegon has with Sunfyre."

The four other children looked to the oldest among them, Prince Aegon, who even with the high praise he was receiving looked bored of the lessons.

"Once they're fully bound to you, they will refuse to take instruction from any other."

"Can I say it?" Jace questioned eagerly as he looked to their dragonkeeper who simply nodded in acknowledgment.  Taking a step towards his dragon "Dracarys, Vermax!"

The dragon then opened its mouth revealing a set of teeth more dangerous than any sword before releasing fire upon the goat that had been brought out only moments before. Although the children were several feet away they hear from the dragon fire was all consuming.

Jace smiled pleased with how his dragon's ability to follow his command. As the training continued they were all allowed some time with their dragons.

The sight of Marynax made Daena smile. Her dragon's silver and violet scales shining from the fire lit torches. He was still far to small to ride, but she eagerly waited for the day when her dragon would be large enough to take to the skies.

As their training came to an end the five children watched as dragonkeepers escorted their four dragons back into the depths of the pit.

"Aemond, we have a surprise for you." Aegon said after a moment as he threw and arm over his younger brother's shoulders. Looking to her two brothers Daena raised a single eyebrow unsure of what their uncle was saying, whatever the surprise was Jace and Luke were a part of it from the smiles on their faces. She watched as Luke ran deeper into the dragon pit skeptical of whatever surprise Aegon had planned.

Aemond seemed just as skeptical as he rolled his eyes and allowed his brother to guide him in the direction the Lucerys had run to. "What is it?"

"Something very special. You're the only one of us without a dragon."

"Indeed." Aemond replied bitterly.

"And we felt badly about it, so we found one for you."

"A dragon?" His brother asked skeptically, it was clear that Aemond was simply going along and didn't trust his brother. Even Daena questioned Aegon's motives as her uncle was not known for his maturity. "How?

"The gods provide."  Aegon continued just as Lucerys had returned a rope in hand. The other end of the rope held a large pig, branched attached to its side to mimic the shape of dragon wings. "Behold."

"The Pink Dread!" The three boys declared before they were consumed by a fit of laughter. A small laugh escaped Daena's lips at the sight of the ridiculously dressed animal, but she placed her hand over her mouth to prevent herself from laughing any further.

Looking to her uncle for his reaction, she found all the humor lost. Aemond's hand were in tight fists, the only sign of how troublesd he truly was. The quiet fury in his eyes was unnoticed by the others who continued to laugh.

Daena knew everything was undoubtedly orchestrated by Aegon, her brothers normally would not engage in such cruelty but they did have a tendency to do as their eldest uncle pleased. They had to have known that this would would Aemond who was the only one among them who's dragon egg had not hatched.

Even Helaena, who did not favor spending much time with her dragon, had been successful.

"Be sure to mount her carefully." Aegon continued to tease as he placed a hand on his brother's shoulders while Jace and Luke continued to laugh. "First flight's always rough."

The three boys continued laughing as the ran out to the dragon pit leaving Aemond.

Daena moved to follow her brother's out of the pit before she glanced at her uncle who remained still, a quiet fury behind his eyes. Stopping beside her uncle she placed her hand on his shoulder as an attempt to comfort him, a gesture that he clearly did not appreciate from the still furious look in his eyes. "They meant no harm by it uncle."

"Daena!" Lucerys' called as he waited for her at the entrance of the dragonpit.

Her young brother might have looked up to Jacaerys, but the truth was whenever she was in the room her would hardly leave her side. Running to her brother she took her hand as the headed back towards the Red Keep.
