Chapter Thirty-Seven

Thalia

I gritted my teeth as Toni grinned wryly at me from behind her bloodied face.

"Listen here, Toni. We're here to get answers. The only reason you're not completely gagged right now is because we need to you to talk. Not throw around petty insults." Leo stated.

"Awe! But that's so fun to do!" She pouted sarcastically. Peter's eyes narrowed but he remained silent.

"When did the Don hire you to kill Thalia?" Fiona demanded, crossing her arms.

Toni's eyes shifted to Fiona for a second as she looked her over. "You're pissed. I can tell." She grinned, ignoring the question. "Is it because I messed with Thalia, or because I trashed your wedding?"

Fiona's eye twitched and Ricardo reached out to rub comforting circles into her back.

"Stop fucking around, Toni. This isn't the time for mind games. Now either you answer our questions, or we'll stop asking nicely and start making the process a lot more painful for you." Leo hissed.

"What are you going to do, Leo? Punch me in the face a couple times? I know you don't have the balls to hit a girl. You've been raised to be a gentleman." Toni opened her mouth to mock Leo again before Peter socked her right in the jaw. I jumped a bit at the sound of the impact and my eyes widened.

Toni blinked as she tried to recover from the unexpected blow.

"My brother may be prim and proper, but I don't give a fuck what your gender is!" Peter grabbed Toni's chin and forcefully turned her head so that she was staring him in the eyes. "You touched my girl. So I'm gonna make sure you go through all the pain you deserve, bitch."

Toni's straight face melted into a sadistic grin. "Oh, wow, Pete. You were never this protective of me when we were together." Her eyes met mine and I suddenly felt like the smallest person in the room. "She must be willing to fuck you a lot more often than I did."

Peter's eyes narrowed and he grabbed a fistful of Toni's braids before yanking them back forcefully. Toni cried out in pain as Peter continued. "You and I were never together." He said avoiding the sex comment. "Now answer the damn question."

Toni took a deep ragged breath "Kinky." She breathed.

Peter's honey eyes flashed with rage and he balled up his fist to punch her again before Leo grabbed his wrist. "Enough!" He boomed. "She can't talk if you beat her senseless."

"But she won't talk anyway." Peter retorted, yanking his arm free. He sent one last chilling glare Toni's way before standing up. I turned to look at Leo. What was his plan now?

His eyes shifted to me and it was then I knew.

Me. I was the plan.

Was he serious? He wanted ME to interrogate TONI? It was like asking a mouse to interrogate a lion! I was completely unprepared for this. What would I ask? How would I ask it?

I gave Leo a look of disbelief and he glanced at Toni before looking at me with a raised brow.

He was dead serious.

I bit the inside of my mouth before stepping forward.

"Oh, wow. You guys are pulling all the stops, now. Are you seriously entrusting this pale twink with interrogating me?" Toni asked with a smirk. It was forced. I could tell. Her bloodied face made my skin crawl and I was halfway considering just turning tail and leaving the rest of it to the Ronans. But I knew I couldn't. I was the last line of defense. Leo chose me to do this for some reason, now I had to prove him right.

"Look, Toni, it doesn't have to be this difficult. If you just tell us what we want to know, then-" I stopped speaking abruptly as Toni spat at me. The projectile fell short and landed at my feet. I looked down at the glob of spit then up at her with a raised brow.

"Wow. Really mature of you." I deadpanned.

"If I didn't tell the Ronans anything what makes you think I'll tell you anything? I was sent here to kill you, bitch! I'm not telling you shit!" Toni hissed, her eyes blazing with fury.

I gritted my teeth and narrowed my eyes at her. She was really pissing me off, now. Did she seriously think that I was the one in the wrong here?

I pressed my lips together in a thin line. "You know what? That's fine. We don't need information from the Don's little mutt anyway." I seethed.

Something flashed in Toni's eyes before she returned my glare. "Excuse me?" She asked.

"You heard me." I said, crossing my arms. "You told me yourself. The Don has plenty of people who would be willing to do his bidding for him. He probably just sent you out first, not because you're strong or anything. It was mere convince for him. He didn't expect you to kill me. He expected you to scare me, to put fear in my heart. He knew you were too incompetent to truly kill me, Toni. Let's face it, in a room full of deadly Pit Bulls, you're a Corgi to the Don."

Toni jumped at me as though she wasn't tied down to a chair and I jumped backwards a bit in fear, my eyes widening as she practically growled at me.

"You don't know anything about me, the Don, or the Mafia! The Don trusted me enough to take you out because you're nothing more that a fly to him! He wasn't going to waste his full arsenal on something as insignificant as you!" Toni seethed.

"How do you know? To him, I'm probably more of a threat than you'll ever be!"

"He told me, bitch! When he called me to hire me he told me specifically, 'Take out that girl. She's an easy target because she's nothing more than an inconvenience to me.' You really think that just because you learned a few fancy moves that you're a threat?" Toni smirked. "That's cute."

I tried to hold back my smug grin. She was giving away information without even knowing it. Perfect.

"Wait, so he called you himself? That's hard to believe. What, did he wire you the money himself too?" I asked wryly.

"Of course not. How stupid do you think he is? It was wired by someone else in his stead!"

"When?"

"A few weeks ago." Toni rolled her eyes with a huff. "You know, I'm almost halfway happy that I told him about you! Maybe that's why he told me to kill you for him. Because he saw me as trustworthy!"

"Excuse you?" Fiona asked, stepping forward and pushing me behind her. "What was that last comment?"

Toni smirked. "Oh, I forgot I never told you that, did I?" She tilted her head like a cat. "I was the one who told the Don about Thalia being knowledgeable about your mob. Surprise."

"Why you-" Peter stalked forward, no doubt ready to hit Toni, but Rhys rushed forwards and held him back.

"How the hell did you even contact the Don. He keeps a profile so low that even the mob kings know only a little bit about him." Leo questioned.

"That's my little secret." Toni smirked. "Well, mine and Jason's."

"I knew it!" Peter hissed. "I should have killed that son of a bitch when I had the chance!"

Toni seemed to enjoy the utter chaos we were in, so she smirked and continued. "All I had to do was meet up with Jason and he took care of the rest. He's a really reliable guy." Toni's eyes landed on me and her smirk grew even wider. "You've gathered a lot of enemies during these past few months, you know. You made it so very easy for me."

My heart stopped. Jason? But I thought he'd been taken care of! If he and Toni were working together, did that mean that I was in even more danger than I'd originally feared? This was bad. This was really bad!

Leo must've sensed my inner panic because he turned to me. "We need to get you out of here." He placed a hand on my shoulder and motioned to Corey. "I want you to get her home. Don't stop until you're there, no detours, no pit-stops, nothing. Keep her in the back seat of the car and make sure no one is following you." He gently shoved me and Corey took ahold of my arm, pulling me along behind him.

I turned behind me to look at Toni, who was staring behind me as I got dragged out of the room. She smiled sadistically, her eyes never leaving mine as Fiona pulled out a gun from it's holstered spot on her hip.

I quickly turnedaround as Corey gently yanked me onward. "We have to hurry, Thalia." He saidsimply. We made it to the car, and I slid in the back seat just as a loud gunshotrang through the air. I jumped at the noise and Corey turned to me, his blueeyes flashing with sympathy. He paused for a moment and for a second, I thoughthe would open up to me, that our silent fighting would finally come to an end. Butjust as quickly as the look in his eyes appeared, Corey turned back to thewheel and pulled away from the warehouse. I felt my heart drop and I turned tothe window as we drove home.
