Chapter Seventeen
Peter
I adjusted the cuff of my suit jacket before observing myself in the mirror. We weren't in any rush. Corey and Rhys were waiting in the warehouse for us with two other members of our mob. They'd already taken Eli captive and they were ready for us.
I looked at myself in the mirror once more before taking off my suit jacket and unbuttoned the top three buttons of my dress shirt. Yep, this was the look.
I walked out of my room and ran my fingers through my hair. I ran into Fiona, who was dressed in a, long black sheath dress and heels. She also had a white fur shawl draped around her shoulders. I never understood why she didn't just put on a pants suit. It was kind of extra on her part. But I chose to keep my opinions to myself.
"Hey, Fiona, have you seen Thalia? I'm trying to make sure there are no hard feelings, you know?" I asked.
Fiona looked up from her phone. "She's hanging out with mother while we're gone taking care of business. They're going to the park or something. I didn't listen too carefully." She said waving her hand dismissively. She looked at my outfit and scrunched up her nose. "Why are you going out dressed like a stripper from Magic Mike?"
I gave her a deadpanned look. "Just because my shirt is unbuttoned, doesn't mean I'm a stripper." I stated.
"It gives off that impression." Fiona replied looking me up and down.
I scoffed just as Leo and Ricardo walked down the stairs dressed in suits. Leo gave me a look and I smirked at him. "Everyone ready?" He asked. We all nodded and with that, we headed out. Honestly, I'm just glad that Thalia was going to be far away from all this. Just because we told her what we do, doesn't mean we want her involved.
Thalia
I looked down at the outfit Fiona had selected for me. It was actually quite badass. I was wearing tight wide legged pants and a white dress shirt that was unbuttoned to reveal my black bra, yet it was tied off on the end so it showed just enough of my skin, but not too much to be an issue.
Suddenly, Fiona hopped into the car and turned back to me. "You good, Tal?" She asked.
"Yeah. Kind of nervous though..." I said, fiddling with my fingers.
Fiona pulled out of the driveway and followed the boys' car. "Ah, don't go all cold feet on me now, dear. You had a little impressive rebel streak going for you." She smirked.
The car ride was completely quiet and I realized that the further we drove, the dirtier the houses looked and the darker the streets got. Soon we arrived at the edge of town with all the dirty, old warehouses. My skin grew chill-bumps as we turned onto a gravel road and drove down it until we were at the very last warehouse. It was far away from the road's view and deep in the shadows. It was incredibly eerie. We drove inside of the warehouse past two very intimidating guards and Fiona parked the car beside the boys'.
She quickly turned back to me. "Whatever happens, DO NOT get out of this car. Stay here. I have tinted windows, so no one should be able to see you."
I raised an eyebrow at her. "Hold up, you agreed to bring me with you, got me dressed up and everything, but you're not letting me get out?"
Fiona smiled. "Precisely. I've already done one stupid thing. I'm not doing two. Now stay put." Just as she said that, Ricardo opened the door and extended his hand to Fiona. She made sure that she was blocking me from view as she took his hand and got out of the car, closing the door behind her.
I huffed. Of course. I climbed to the front seat and watched the scene before me. I saw Peter as he exited the car and ran his fingers through his hair. His dress shirt was unbuttoned a bit and he glanced around with those honey brown orbs of his. I swear my heart stopped, honestly. He waited for Leo, Fiona, and Ricardo before the group walked to the group of five in the center of the room.
Among the group of five, I recognized three people. Rhys and Corey, who were both dressed in classy suits, turned to face Leo and his group. Rhys used his tongue to play with the toothpick in his mouth and jerked his chin in a greeting. Corey did the same.
The other person I noticed made my blood boil. Toni turned around and smirked at the sighting of the group. She instantly walked over to Peter and latched onto his arm, looking up at him with adoring eyes. Peter clenched his teeth and looked down at Toni with a raised eyebrow. Fiona had left the window down just a little bit. I'm not sure if she did that on purpose or accidentally but I could hear the murmur of conversation.
Leo drew everyone's attention by clearing his throat and all eyes turned to him. He turned to Rhys and Corey and gave them a look. They quickly walked away. I furrowed my brow as I tried to figure out where they were going.
Toni looked up at Peter and said something before tugging at the collar of his shirt. He closed his eyes and sighed in annoyance before replying. Toni must not have liked his answer because her smile melted and her expression changed to a slightly angry one. She let go of his arm and crossed her own.
Suddenly, Cory and Rhys came back dragging something behind them. It was then that I realized it wasn't a something, but a someone. The man between them struggled violently, but since his eyes were covered, it was pretty useless.
Corey and Rhys slammed the man onto a chair in the center of the room and tied him down to the chair. Ricardo walked over and grabbed the top of the burlap bag that covered looked at Leo, who nodded in confirmation. Ricardo suddenly ripped off the bag to reveal a man who looked like he was in his forties. He was covered in sweat and bruises and his eyes were filled with pure terror. I assumed that he was Eli.
"Look, guys, I'm sorry okay. I didn't mean it! I promise I'll never do it again!" He rushed.
"Damn right you won't." Leo stated. He began to circle Eli menacingly. Eli shivered in fear. "Tell me," Leo began, "What made you do it?" Leo kneeled down in front of Eli and grabbed the man's chin. "What cogs turned in your little head and told you that stealing from my family and I was a good idea?"
"I...I..." Eli trailed off, no doubt fishing for an excuse.
Leo rolled his eyes dramatically and stood up. "There's no excuse for greed, Eli. So stop trying to find one. Fiona handed Leo a pair of black gloves and he slipped them on. "We pay you guys. We pay you guys more than enough money to keep you comfortable. So, stealing, embezzling, no less, is uncalled for." Leo grabbed a hand-full of Eli's hair and pulled it so that Eli was looking in Leo's eyes. "Understood?"
Eli nodded quickly, tears running down his eyes. I couldn't help but feel...sorry for him.
Suddenly, I felt a tingling in my nose. No! Not now! Any time, but now!
I held my breath and tried to stifle it, but I couldn't help it.
I sneezed.
I covered my mouth and my eyes widened. Oh shit. Did anyone hear me? I looked up and released a breath I hadn't realized I'd been holding. No one was looking around. I was safe.
Or so I thought.
Suddenly, Peter turned around his eyes narrowed at Fiona's car. I gulped.
Fiona noticed him looking away and mumbled something to him. He shook his head at her and said something in return before walking away from the group and towards Fiona's car. I squeaked and quickly scrambled to the back seat before ducking down behind the driver's seat and out of view.
I held my breath as I heard the door open.
'Please don't look behind the chair', I mentally begged. I listened quietly as Peter sighed and closed the door.
I smiled softly. I was safe!
I yelped suddenly as the door beside me opened and I saw Peter looking down at my with wide eyes. "THALIA!" He hissed in shock as he saw me. "What the fuck?!"
He looked back to see if anyone had noticed him and once he was sure he was in the clear, he shoved me over and hopped in the car, closing the door. "What the hell are you doing here?" His eyes traveled down to my outfit. "And what the hell are you wearing? Don't get me wrong, its hot and all, but you're not supposed to be here!"
"You can blame Fiona for the outfit, honestly. But," I chuckled nervously. "I kind of... decided to be a stowaway..." I said.
"I thought you were hanging out with mom!" He hissed, glancing up through the window. Still, no one was looking. They were too taken by Leo walking around Eli and psyching him out.
"Well, I'm here, so obviously you thought wrong."
"Now is NOT the time for sass, Lea." Peter deadpanned.
"Sorry." I muttered.
"How much have you heard so far?" Peter asked, raising an eyebrow
"All of it." I answered.
Peter groaned and rubbed a hand down his face. "What the fuck, Lea. You had one simple job. ONE! And that was stay home!"
I let Peter rant on and I turned my attention back to the window where Leo loomed over Eli. Slowly, Leo reached into his suit jacket and my eyes widened as he pulled out a silenced pistol. Was he going to-
Three shots rang out in the warehouse and I gasped, covering my mouth. Eli's body went limp and Leo ran his hand through his hair as though nothing had just happened, as if he hadn't just killed man.
Peter silently cursed and turned towards me. "Stay here." He said firmly and got out of the car.
Leo jerked his chin at Rhys and Corey who untied Eli's corpse and dragged him away, a trail of blood following behind them. Where were they taking him? My throat ran dry as they disappeared around a corner. Were they going to tell his family? Did he even have family? I'm sure he did. Did they know about what he did for a living? If they didn't would they ever find out? A tear slid down my cheek as the image of the man's last fleeting moments kept replaying in my mind. Maybe Fiona was right. I wasn't cut out for this life. Not if it involved things like this.
