The beast
My eyes darted around the arena, scanning for any potential escape routes or weapons. The cavern walls were slick with moisture, offering no purchase for climbing. The only exit was the way we'd come in, now heavily guarded by Soliflorae soldiers.
The leader's voice boomed again, "Today, we give these human vermin a chance for glory!"
A sickening cheer erupted from the crowd as gates on the far side of the arena ground open with a rusty screech. My heart nearly stopped as I saw what emerged - a massive, reptilian creature with rows of razor-sharp teeth and claws that could shred flesh like paper.
Panic gripped the group of humans around me. Some fell to their knees, sobbing. Others frantically searched for anything they could use as a weapon. I remained frozen, my mind racing to formulate a plan.
My mouth felt dry and my tongue stuck to the roof of my mouth. I could taste the metallic tang of fear and the saltiness of my own sweat.
My mouth was dry with fear, my tongue sticking to the roof of my mouth. The bitter taste of bile rose in my throat, a nauseating reminder of the impending danger.
The taste of bile rose in my mouth, a mixture of fear and disgust as I watched the horrific creature emerge from its gate.
My hands shook and my heart pounded against my chest, my whole body trembling with fear and adrenaline. The ground felt cold and damp beneath my bare feet, the air thick with humidity.
The cold stone floor beneath my feet was unforgiving, sending shivers up my spine. I could feel the trembling of the other humans pressed around me, their bodies radiating heat and panic.
My hands shook with terror as I clutched at the fabric of my tattered clothes, feeling the rough, worn fabric against my skin.
I was suddenly jolted out of my daze as a man violently pulled at my shirt, his eyes wide with fear and desperation. "Wake the hell up.” he yelled, his breath hot on my face. "If we lose ourselves, we become nothing but a meal for this creatures." He tore a piece of my shirt off and hastily wrapped it around my hand, thrusting a crude makeshift weapon into my grasp. With determined intensity in his piercing grey-blue eyes, he ordered me to guard our rear as he turned to face the ravenous beast that had caught one of our slave group in its jaws.
The creature's massive jaws clamped down on the unfortunate victim, their agonized screams cutting through the air before being suddenly silenced. The sickening crunch of bones and tearing of flesh made my stomach lurch.
I gripped the makeshift weapon tightly, my knuckles turning white. The man who had roused me from my stupor was already charging towards the beast, wielding what looked like a broken metal long sword. Others followed his lead, desperation fueling their courage.
I backed away, my eyes darting frantically around the dimly lit chamber. The walls were slick with moisture, offering no hope of escape. As I moved, my foot caught on something. I looked down to see the crumpled form of another captive, eyes wide with terror but paralyzed by fear.
"Get up!" I hissed urgently, my hands gripping their arms and pulling them to their feet. The humid air hung heavy around us, as the heat of beast's breath licked at my back. My heart pounded in my chest as I quickly dove forward, narrowly avoiding a vicious bite from the creature's powerful jaws. The stench of its saliva filled my nostrils making me gag,
The beast's roar shook the cavern, sending tremors through the stone beneath our feet. Its scales gleamed in the dim light, a sickly iridescent sheen that seemed to absorb the shadows around it. As it lunged forward, its massive tail whipped through the air, catching two of our fellow captives and sending them flying across the arena.
The man with the makeshift sword charged forward, his eyes blazing with a fierce determination. He ducked under the creature's snapping jaws, rolling to the side and slashing at its exposed flank. The blade, though crude, found purchase between the beast's scales, drawing a river of dark, viscous blood.
The creature howled in pain and fury, its head whipping around with lightning speed. Its teeth caught the man's arm, tearing through flesh and muscle. He screamed, a sound of pure agony that echoed off the cave
The beast's roar of pain reverberated through the cavern, shaking loose debris from the ceiling. As the man with the makeshift sword stumbled back, clutching his mangled arm, I felt something shift within me. A surge of primal blood lust coursed through my veins, awakening a part of myself I never knew existed.
Without thinking, I sprinted toward the wounded creature, my bare feet slapping against the damp stone. The putrid stench of its blood filled my nostrils, but I pushed through the nausea. As I neared the beast, I saw its massive tail swinging towards me. In a moment of impossible clarity, I leaped, using the momentum of the tail to propel myself onto the creature's back.
My fingers dug into the gaps between its scales, finding purchases where there should have been none. The beast bucked and thrashed, trying to dislocate me.
I clung to the beast's back, my fingers digging deeper into the crevices between its scales as it thrashed wildly. The creature's roars of fury echoed through the cavern, drowning out the frenzied shouts of the crowd. My muscles screamed in protest as I held on, but a newfound strength surged through me.
In a moment of reckless inspiration, I reached for the makeshift weapon still clutched in my hand. With a primal cry, I plunged it into the beast's neck, just behind its massive skull. The creature's shriek of pain was deafening, and its movements became even more frantic.
Blood, hot and viscous, spurted from the wound, coating my arms and chest. The coppery scent filled my nostrils, mingling with the creature's foul stench. But I didn't relent. I twisted the weapon.
