PROLOGUE
"Hello. Hello....can anyone hear my voice?"
A voice sounded from the radio. Avery and Dale looked at each other before getting up from their chairs.
Amy dropped the pile of sticks in her hands and ran over to the radio. "Hey. Hello?"
"Can you hear my voice?"
"Yes, you're coming through. Over." Amy responded looking up at Avery and Dale as they approached. Bewildered expressions on their faces.
"If anyone reads, please respond."
"Broadcasting on the emergency channel. Will be approaching Atlanta on highway 85. If anyone reads, please respond."
"We're just outside the city," Amy said before the radio began to crackle. "Damn it. Hello? Hello?" she took her finger off the button and looked up at dale. "He couldn't hear me. I couldn't warn him."
"Try to raise him again," Dale said pointing at the radio.
"Come on, son, you know best how to work this thing." Dale got out of his mouth just as an ax came swinging down in the stump the radio sat on.
Avery looked over at Lori as she finally stood up and walked over to them and took a spot right next to her.
Shane took off his gloves and kneels down next to the stump and took ahold of the microphone. "Hello, hello. Is the person who called still on the air?" he asked but there was nothing but static. "This is officer Shane Walsh broadcasting to person unknown. Please respond."
He let go of the button once again and still nothing but the sound of the radio crackling could be heard. After a few seconds, Shane finally put the mic down. "He's gone." He looked up at dale who only shrugged.
"There are others. It's not just us." Lori said shrugging.
"We knew there would be, right?" Shane questioned looking down at the radio before looking back up at Lori. "That's why we left the C.B. on."
"A lot of good it's been doing," Lori said bitterly. "And I've been saying for a week we ought to put signs up on 85 to warn people away from the city."
"Folks got no idea what they're getting into," Amy added on.
"Well, we haven't had time."Shane shot back.
"I think we need to make time."
"I agree," Avery said taking Lori's side.
"Yeah, that--that's a luxury we can't afford. We are surviving here. We are day to day" Shane said running a hand through his beard.
"And who the hell would you propose we send?" Dale asked.
"I'll go. Give me a vehicle." Lori offered.
"Nobody does anywhere alone. You know that." Shane shot back talking to her almost like you would a child.
There was a silence as they looked at each other. Lori looking away and to the ground and shaking her head a bit before walking away, her young son Carl following after her. "Yes, sir."
"I can go with her," Avery stepped forward raiding a hand up.
"My answer is no," Shane said shooting her a glare. He stepped away and caught carl before e could catch up with Lori. He lowered his voice as he spoke to Carl. "Hey hey hey. Go on, take a seat, Bud. You're alright, Go on, you're alright."
Carl was hesitant but did as he was told. Avery walked over and put a hand on his shoulder and gave it a squeeze as they watched Shane follow after Lori. She smiled down at him as he tilted his head up to look at her.
"Come on, you have lessons." She let go of his shoulder and began to make her way towards the RV.
"But-"
"Hey, you still have to learn," she stopped and looked back at him, giving him a smile and gave him a playful wink motioning for him to follow. "Come on, alright, I promise no math today."
Carl smiled big at her before following her back over to the RV. "Fine!"
