Chapter seventeen: not edited
[THIS EPISODE ALWAYS MAKES ME MAD BECAUSE OF HOW JOHN WINCHESTER TREATS SAM. SAM DOESN'T DESERVE THAT CRAP. SO HERE COMES PROTECTIVE RORY IN THIS EPISODE/CHAPTER. I'M ALSO GOING TO START PREWRITING CHAPTERS FOR YOU GUYS.]
50 VOTES AND 40 COMMENTS FOR NEXT CHAPTER.
The hours of the next few night grew incredibly slow. Maybe it was because he didn't have Sam on the left side of him any more nor did he have Dean bickering at him in his ear. Whatever made him feel this way, he hated it. He hated being alone. But he knew this was for the best at this time.
Call him crazy for missing the Winchesters. After all the shit they've been through together, he was glad he went through it with them. These couple months weren't easy. All three of them knew that. That was probably why Dean and him started to not get along nowadays. They weren't a like, no- but having to be in small rooms together didn't help either.
Of course, he knew what he was getting himself into when he found Sam and Dean in Wisconsin. But he never guessed that it would end like this. He knew he needed to get back on the road with them. Yet, would Dean allow that to happen since he stormed out on them? Knowing Sam, he would be angry at his brother if that happened, but could he stop him?
Probably not.
With a heavy heart, Rory rolled onto his side. His eyes were glued to the motel room wall, taking in every little detail of the ripped paper. He couldn't understand why motel's were so dirty and unclean. He knew not all of them were like that, but most of them were. It was quite disgusting to see.
He wondered what Sam and Dean were doing. If they were hunting something or just staying at a local bar trying to pick up girls. Even though that was Dean's doing more than Sam. With a sigh, he closed his eyes drifting off to sleep when his phone woke him up a few minutes later.
"Sam, what can I do for you?" He says when he answered the phone call.
"Can you meet us?"
"No, 'hello?' Rude." Rory drawled out the last word, smirking when he heard a groan come from the other side. "Oh Sammy, if you keep groaning like that you'll cause me to do things."
"You're unbelievable."
"Tell me something I don't know, Bambi." Rory snorted at his own statement. "But in all seriousness, are you okay? I know it's been a couple days since we last spoke, so I want to make sure you aren't hurt."
"Nah, I'm fine. But another hunter may not be."
He frowned. "What happened?"
"Can you meet me at this address? I'll explain when you get there."
And that's how Rory Moore found himself in Colorado in the middle of the night with a car he stole in the middle of the parking lot. When he pulled up the familiar Impala, he sighed. He knew he was going to face Dean again, so he swallowed hard and got out of the car to meet them in the middle.
"Took you long enough."
Rory glanced at Dean in boredom. "I'm sorry princess, there was traffic and it was a few hour drive. So sorry, your highness."
"Can you guys please act civil for once? A hunter is dead. Show some respect." Sam snapped at them both.
"Yeah, you're right."
"Sorry." Both of them mumbled at the same time.
The three of them started to walk up the trail that lead to the hunter's cabin. It was quiet, too quiet for the blonde's liking. He didn't know who this hunter was or how he died, but he felt bad for him. Yet, that's what he gets for joining this life. It either ends one way; death or losing everyone you love.
"So who was it?" The blonde found himself asking when Sam started to pick the door's lock.
"Daniel Elkins." Dean answered him. "We don't know much about him. The only thing is he was listed in our Dad's journal."
"Oh." He blinked.
Eventually, Sam managed to open the front door to the cabin, making their job ten times easier. Holding a flashlight, the blonde walked in behind the two brothers, not even noticing the startling look on their faces when they saw some salt lined against the window.
Looking around at the mess, Dean spoke up. "Looks like the maid didn't come today."
Sam didn't pay attention to what his brother had said because he noticed more salt behind the front door. "Hey, there's salt over here." He pointed. "Right beside the door."
"What kind of salt though?" Rory questioned them.
"Yeah, I hate to say this, but Rory's right. What kind of salt?" Dean flipped through Daniel Elkin's journal- one he found on the floor. "Do you think it's protection against demon salt, or 'oops I spilled the popcorn' salt."
"Mhm. Popcorn sounds nice right now." He found himself saying. When none of the brothers answered him, he coughed. "Okay, okay. I'll be quiet... for now."
Sam raised an eyebrow in the blonde's direction before glancing at his brother. "It's clearly a ring. You think this guy Elkins was a player?"
"A player like he slept around or a player who gambles a lot?" The blonde says, breaking his no talking rule. "Hey, I'm just saying." He shrugged.
The blonde watched Dean walk over to the a certain table, picking up a journal that resembles their Dad's. When Sam came from behind his brother, his eyes grew wide at the same thing Rory thought of.
"That looks a hell of a lot like Dad's."
"Yep." Dean made a noise of agreement. "Except this dates back to the 60s."
"The 60's? How old is this guy?" Rory questioned, but no one knew the answer to it.
Rory, Sam, and Dean move into another room, shining their flashlights around the destruction. Everything was all over the place. Books, papers, lamps, and more things that belonged in a room. It was sad to see a nice cabin like this one be in such a bad mess.
"Whatever attacked him, it looks like there was more than one." Sam commented with a frown.
"What could've done that?" Rory glanced up at them.
"Beats me." Dean responds to his question. "But it looks like he put up a hell of a fight too."
They look around the room, trying to find something useful to see if something can tell them what happened. With no luck, Rory walked out of the room only to hear one of the brothers crouch to the floor. Going back inside, he saw Dean examining the floor, making the blonde frown in confusion.
"What is it?"
"You got something?"
Rory watched as Dean examined the floor more closely, making him inch closer to the older boy. He was curious to see what Dean was looking at, what he had found and to see if it was useful for them to use. So that made him squat down to investigate the floor with him, hoping to find something.
"I dunno. Some scratches on the floor." Dean replied to them both.
"Can you be anymore obvious." Rory rolled his eyes with a sigh. "We can tell by looking at the floor ourselves, genius."
"Today is really pick on Dean Winchester day, isn't it?"
"You mean every day that ends in a y." The blonde retorted sarcastically back.
Dean sent him a glare.
"Death throes maybe?"
Dean turned to look at his brother.
"Yeah, maybe."
Rory watches as Dean grabs a page from a notebook and places it over the marks on the floor and quickly rubs the end of a pencil that he had found on the wooden desk nearby. As the older boy continued to scrub over the outline, he notices that the scratches are forming into some kind of message.
Dean must have been thinking the same thing because he spoke up about it. "Or maybe a message."
He peels up the paper, which had a lot of blood on the back of it. But that's not what stood out to the three of them. On the backside was an outline of characters, words for the matter. The blonde kept his eyes on it, even when he handed it over to Sam to see his reaction.
"Three letters, six digits. The location and combination of a post office box. It's a mail drop."
"Just the way Dad does it."
➼
"Who knew that going into a post office could give someone the creeps."
It was the middle of the night when he was dragged out of the car to retrieve something out of Elkin's safe. Sam and Dean were determined to find out what it was, but Rory could careless at the moment. All he wanted to do was curl up in the blankets and go to sleep for the night.
"This place gives me bad vibes, can I stay outside?"
"No." Dean deadpanned at the blonde's words..
"But, Dean!" Rory whined lowly. "I don't want to get murdered here, especially in a place that receives mail."
"You're not going to die." Dean rummaged through the safe that he had opened a few minutes ago.
"How do you know that?"
"Cause we won't let anything bad happen to you, that's why."
Rory blinked in confusion, but shook it off when Dean handed Sam a letter that he had found in the back of the open safe. The blonde watched as Sam shot his brother a look of confusion before the three of them headed back to the impala, concerned at the sudden revelation.
When they got comfortable in the car, that's when Sam started to ask why John Winchester's initials were written on it. Even at the thought of that made the blonde frown. What was in the mail? What was so important that Daniel Elkins died for?
His thoughts were suddenly cut off when a low knock was heard on the drivers side of the impala. All of them jumped at the sudden noise and soon relaxed at the sight of John Winchester staring at them through the window.
"Oh boy, here he comes." Rory muttered under his breath when John got in the seat next to him. "Please, someone shoot me out of my misery"
"Dad, what are you doing here? Are you all right?" Sam glanced at his father in worry.
John moved a bit to get himself comfortable. "Yeah, I'm ok. I read the news about Daniel, I got here as fast as I could. I saw you two at his place."
"What about me? I was there as well." Rory pipped up.
John ignored him.
Sam gave a warning look to the blonde when he was about to open his mouth. "Why didn't you come in Dad?"
"You know why." John replied in a deep voice, looking at his sons. "Because I had to make sure you weren't followed by anyone or anything. Nice job of covering your tracks by the way."
Dean beamed at the compliment. "Yeah, well, we learned from the best."
'That's not the only thing you learned.' The blonde thought to himself.
But Rory couldn't understand why John was here at this time. Sam must have thought the same thing because he asked the question that was on his mind.
"Wait, you came all the way out here for this Elkins guy?"
"Yeah. He was a good man." John spoke softly with some kind of softness in his voice. "He taught me a hell of a lot about hunting."
"Well, he did a great job." Rory found himself saying, shocking all of them in the car. "I mean, you did a great job teaching them how to hunt." Motioning to Sam and Dean.
John actually smiled at that.
Rory was taken back at how much John can change in one minute. Even though they weren't close or known each other really, he felt like the eldest Winchester had a soft side to him. As they continue to talk, Sam and Dean's father decided to bring up something that could be in the package that Daniel Elkins could have left behind.
"When you searched the place, did you, did you see a gun? An antique, a Colt revolver, did you see it?" John asked all of them in a rushed tone of voice.
"Ah, there was, there was an old case but it was empty."
John cursed under his breath. "They have it."
"You mean whatever killed Elkins?" Dean furrowed his eyebrows.
Starting to get out of his car, John spoke. "We gotta pick up the trail."
"Wait. You want us to come with you?" Sam asked his father.
"If Elkins was telling the truth, we gotta find this gun."
➼
After the discovery of what killed John Winchester's friend, the three of them found themselves on the road again. Rory was kind of happy that the eldest Winchester rode by himself. He couldn't stand another argument between Sam and him. He didn't know what the beef they had with each other, but from the looks of it, it was something serious.
At the moment, Sam was driving the impala with Dean by his side and Rory in the backseat. The car was thick with tension that could cut through the air. The blonde noticed how Sam's jaw was locked in place, like he was about to explode at any moment.
With the phone pressed to his ear, Dean continued to talk into it. "Yeah Dad. All right, got it." He quickly hung up and turned to his brother. "Pull off at the next exit."
Sam's jaw contorted before he uttered out. "Why?"
"Cause Dad thinks we've got the vampire's trail."
"Vampires, gosh. I really hope they don't sparkle in the sun." Rory tried to crack a joke but no one thought it was funny.
"How?" Sam asked angrily.
"I don't know; he didn't say."
That was the absolutely wrong thing to say, because next thing that Rory knew Sam gunned the engine to make it past his Dad's before slamming on the brakes- making the blonde slam his head against the window with a low grunt.
"What in the actual-"
Rory clenched his jaw when he saw Sam storm out of the impala with Dean on his tail. With a long pause, he decided to get out of the car before Sam did something worse or get a punch in the face by his father. But, that wasn't the only reason, he felt protective over the youngest Winchester and he knew that Jessica would've wanted that for him.
Opening the car door, Rory shouted. "Sam! Stop, this isn't worth it."
He picked up his pace before he reached the Winchesters, already regretting coming over there because John gave him a hard glare that even made the blonde tremble in his place. So he knew that this wasn't his fight. Even though, he stood protectively beside his best friend.
"We need to talk." Sam's posture was hostile when he uttered out those words,, his eyes narrowed in thin slits like a snake going after it's prey.
John raised a eyebrow, looking slightly angry at his son. "About what?"
"About everything. Where we going Dad. What's the big deal about this gun." Sam retorted, his fists clenched by his side.
Dean sighed, already annoyed at this conversation. "Sammy, come on, we can Q and A after we kill all the vampires."
Rory's eyes flickered to the three of them and noticed how they react to things differently. Dean was the one who held it in while Sam looked like he was going to explode at any moment while John just was all of those in general.
"Your brother's right, we don't have time for this." John replied curtly, making a noise of agreement.
"Last time we saw you, you said it was too dangerous for us to be together. Now out of the blue you need our help" Sam started to yell, his voice echoing around the night sky. "Now obviously something big is going down, and we wanna know what!"
Rory glanced at Sam in worry. "Sam-"
"Get back in the car."
"No."
"I said get back in the damn car." John gave him a glare.
Rory went to grab Sam's arm before he did something stupid and possibly regret. With a tug, the blonde pulled the taller boy with him, like a mother hen would with her chicks. He felt a sigh of relief when Sam complied, only for it to blow over when he muttered something under his breath.
"What'd you say?" John took a couple steps forward, his face beat red.
Sam pulled away from the blonde's grasp. "You heard me."
"Yeah, you left. Your brother and me, we needed you. You walked away, Sam."
"Sam.." Dean looked beyond worried for his brother.
Yelling in Sam's face, John continued. "You walked away!!"
Just hearing those words, made Rory snap. "Yeah? I wonder why he left." He took a pause. "Oh, I know. He didn't want this life anymore and take orders from an abusive father!"
Sam looked at his friend in surprise.
"You were not only horrible to Sam, but to Dean as well. They both needed their father and you will were never there for them!" Rory shouted at him. "So how about you shut the hell up and get back into your car before I take a swing at you as well."
And that's when Rory walked back to the impala and slammed the door shut. He had no clue why he stuck up for Sam and Dean, he just didn't. Maybe this was a sign that he's actually starting to care more than he used to in the end.
