10: LIVING NIGHTMARE

Chapter ten: not edited

"Dean, answer your freaking phone." Rory muttered lowly. The loud ringing of Dean's phone blared through the motel room, angering the blonde from his deep sleep. "Dean, I swear to Sam's hair, if you don't answer your phone I'm throwing it across the room."

All Rory got in response was a loud snort from Dean and snores coming from his direction. Dean freaking Winchester ignored him - of course, what's new? So when the phone stopped ringing, Rory let out a sigh of relief before his eyebrows furrowed in annoyance when the noise started up again.

"That's it!" Rory threw back his covers before stomping over to the wooden counter where Dean's phone laid. He quickly flipped open the phone and answered it. "Who the hell is this? Why do you keep calling this phone? I swear if this is Dean's secret girlfriend I'm yodeling."

"Sam? Is that you?" A male's voice boomed through the phone. The voice sounded older, like in his mid ages.

"Last time I checked I didn't have a girly haircut, so no this isn't Sam." Rory breathed out with a laugh at his joke. "I'm a friend of Sam and Dean's - well mainly Sam because Dean can be an idiot."

"My son's not an idiot. Why in the hell would they have a friend like you? Are you a hunter?"

That's when it hit Rory. This wasn't Dean's secret girlfriend nor one of Sam's college friends, it was their Dad. John freaking Winchester. Rory didn't know how to respond, he knew that one wrong sentence could anger the man, and according to Sam, he didn't have a great temper. And that was something Rory didn't want to be in the center of.

"I-um, well, you see-"

"Rory? Who are you talking to?" Sam stirred out of his sleep to see the blonde on his brother's phone. "Why do you have Dean's phone?"

"Is that my son-"

"Bye John." Rory threw the phone towards Sam, who caught it, giving a quick glare to Rory before answering it. "Hello?"

He paused, before sitting up in bed. "Dad? Are you hurt?" He had a look of confusion on his face before glancing at Rory. "His name is Rory. He's uh, a friend, a very close friend to me."

Rory didn't know why he had a pang in his chest. Probably from the feeling of being called a friend or how he looked uncomfortable talking to his father about him. But from the next look on Sam's face, he could see the conversation was taking a turn, well, that was until Dean woke up and grabbed the phone from his brother's hands. They started to talk quietly before Dean nodded mid conversation.

"Yes, sir." Dean paused to grab a paper and a pencil. "Uh, yeah, I got a pen. What are their names?"

"What's going on?" Rory moved over to sit next to the brunette, who looked to be in deep thought.

"Nothing." Sam sighed, before shaking his head. "I don't want to put my burdens on you."

Rory suddenly looked offended. "Sam Winchester, don't ever say that again. You can never burden me with your problems. I'm your friend, and friends stick together."

When both of them started talking quietly to each other, they didn't notice that Dean was smiling softly in their direction. At first, Dean didn't know Rory's intentions but now he kind of does - he hopes it's the right thought. He would hate for his brother to get hurt again, so that's why he has been keeping a close eye on the blonde, but he likes what he sees so far.

"California? You're not serious?" Dean looked at his brother in disbelief - not believing that he'll want to disobey their father.

"I think he's serious." Rory spoke out when he saw the look of determination on Sam's face. "He looks like he can ride off into the sunset with that kind of face."

"Dad called from a phone in Sacramento, with a payphone may I add." Sam pulled over the side of the road, glaring at Rory for his comment before putting his full attention on Dean. "Dean, if this demon killed Mom and Jess, and Dad's closing in, we've gotta be there. We've gotta help"

At the sound of his sister's name, his stomach dropped a few inches. He missed her dearly. Why did Jessica of all people get caught in the crossfire? And why did Sam and him feel the aftermath of her death the most? He knew if his parents were still alive, his parents wouldn't cope with her death that well.

"For the last time, Dad doesn't want out help."

"I don't care."

"He's given us an order."

Rory watched Sam's face scrunch up in annoyance. "Screw his orders, Dean. I don't care. We don't always have to do what he says."

When Dean looked at Rory, he shook his head. "I didn't teach him that, Dean. Don't give me that look."

"Are you sure? You have a tendency to be rebellious - that can be rubbed off onto the wrong person, you know?"

"Leave him out of this, Dean." Sam was angry that Dean would even suggest that the blonde had something to do with this. "He did nothing wrong."

"I think he did, Sam. Wanna know why? Ever since he got here, you've been acting different. You've only cared about him and revenge. You seem not to even care about me or Dad."

"That's not true and you know it." Sam scowled at him. "Rory has been here for me, he's the only one who understands what I'm going through."

"I don't? Come on, Sam. I'm your brother, he's just someone you met on the road."

Rory was offended. Yes, he knew that he met them on the road, yet, he was there for Sam when he needed someone the most. Where was Dean? All Dean had done was make sarcastic and uncalled for comments while the blonde was actually there for the youngest Winchester.

"First off, screw you, Dean. Second, I'm not someone that Sam met on the road for your information. We've met before, like Sam said a couple months. If you couldn't remember that then somethings wrong with you."

Dean rolled his eyes, but Rory continued to speak. "Sam means everything to me. Yes, we just connected a few months ago, but that doesn't mean I don't care about him. So how about you get that stick out of your ass and actually open your eyes to the truth."

"What truth, huh?"

"That I actually care about your brother."

"You care about him, huh? It looks like you're just trying to get into his pants."

"That's it, I'm leaving." The blonde opened the door before grabbing his stuff and storming out of the impala - leaving Sam fuming at his own brother while Dean was just chill about the whole situation.

"I can't believe you, Dean."

Rory turned his head to watch Sam get out of the car a few minutes later with his older brother following slowly behind. By Sam's face, he looked upset - making the blonde frown. He couldn't be upset about what Dean said to him

"Hey, I'm taking off, I will leave your ass, you hear me?" When Sam didn't answer him, he continued. "Fine choose Rory over your brother, I see who you care about more."

"I'm not choosing him over you, Dean-"

"Goodbye, Sam."

And with that, Dean slammed the trunk shut tightly before storming into the driver side of his car before driving off - leaving Rory and Sam alone. Rory felt terrible, like this was his fault in the first place for letting Sam talk badly to his older brother. But in the end, he knew it wasn't.

"Sam." Rory sounded concerned for his friend. "Are you okay?"

"I'm fine. Let's just find somewhere to stay for the night."

"I would love too."

"Come on, Rory. Move a little faster."

Rory was a few inches behind Sam Winchester, out of breath. He couldn't believe that he walked so much today. They spent the night at a motel and early in the morning, both of them decided it was a good idea to get up and start the day fresh. But he had no idea that Sam would want to walk this much.

"You're the one with long legs and broad shoulders, Sam. You can walk a little faster than me, I can't."

Sam chuckled softly, slowing down a bit. "Sorry, I didn't realize."

The scenery around them was beautiful. The sun was shining brightly, the fresh air was relaxing and the cool breeze ruffled through both of their hairs. In definition, it was a good idea.

"How are you feeling?"

"Fine, why wouldn't I be?" Sam frowned.

"Sam, you had a fight with your brother. One that ended pretty nasty - so, be honest. How are you feeling?" Rory demanded him.

Sam sighed. "Rory, if you're going to be on the road with us, you need to realize that Dean and I won't always get along. Yes, we had a fight, but in the end, we always reconnect."

"If you say so."

Both of them walked for a bit longer before something in front of them made Sam stop walking. In front of them was a blonde girl sitting on the side of the road listening to music. She seemed to have a small smile on her face.

When Rory saw Sam approaching her, he shook his head. "Sam, no. Leave her alone. She's going to think we're freaks."

"Hey." Sam tapped her on the shoulder, grabbing her attention when she jumped.

"You scared the hell out of me!" The girl held a hand over her heart, a small smile gracing her features. "You can't do that to a girl."

Rory smirked. "Don't worry, Sams considered a girl so he's used to be scared." A laugh left back of his throat when the Winchester boy gave him his bitch face.

"So, where are you headed?" Sam cleared his throat.

"I'm not telling you, you could be some kind of freak."

"Oh yes, he is." Rory gave Sam a look over, making the brunette blush.

"Ignore him, that's what I do." Sam rushes out when the girl gave them a look of confusion - making Rory pout.

"Noted. But I'm not telling you anything." The girl continued, glancing over her shoulder to see a van approaching them. "Look, there's a ride now."

The van pulled to the three of them, a creepy man driving behind the wheel. Sam and Rory went to follow the girl into the car, but the man shook his head. "Just her.  I ain't takin' you both."

"You pick a creepy man over us? You don't even know this guy." Sam looked at her in shock.

"I pick him over you guys any day." The girl gave them a cheeky smile before getting into the car and driving off with him - leaving Sam and Rory in disbelief.

"This is why I'm more into guys."

By the time they got to the bus station, it was half empty. Some of the buses were being loaded up while people like Rory and Sam, were stuck inside, trying to get a bus to Sacramento. It was quite annoying having to wait in a long line to talk to someone, only for them to get pushed away by some rude lady working behind the desk.

"Sorry, the Sacramento bus doesn't run again till tomorrow." She checks her schedule before speaking again. "Uh, 5:05 PM."

"Tomorrow? There's got to be another way."

"Well, there is, buy a car." The woman behind the desk said, making Sam look at her in annoyance. "Next!"

"You know Sam, I've got a better way." When Sam turned to look at Rory, he gave him an innocent look. "Buy a bike - that's better than a car, especially since those broad shoulders and long legs could get us to Sacramento."

"You're not funny."

"I am a little funny." Rory followed Sam over to one of those walls and sat down, not noticing that the blonde girl from earlier was sitting a few inches over. When he noticed her, he spoke up. "Hey Bambi, isn't that creepy van girl over there?"

"Shh, she can hear you, Rory!" Sam was annoyed that he was talking to loud, and the fact that she was heading over to them. "Hey."

"You both again."

Rory gave her a suspicious look before smiling. "The one and only."

"What happened to your ride?" Sam asked her.

"You were right. That guy was shady-.he was all hands." She says with a laugh, but frowned when she noticed Sam looking around like he lost something. "What's the matter?"

"He's stressed because he can't buy a car." Rory shrugged. "Nor a bike, figures."

"You could always steal one." She wiggled her eyebrows, making Rory scoff. "Sam, is too innocent for that."

"I am not." Sam looked flustered from all the attention on him. "It's not my fault I want to get to California."

"No way - me too."

"But of course the next bus isn't until tomorrow." Rory groaned, rubbing his face with his hands. "Yeah, that's the problem"

"Why? What's in Cali that's so important?" The blonde girl asked.

"Just something I've been looking for a long time."

"Well, then I'm sure it can wait one more day, right?" She held out her hand for Sam to take. "I'm Meg."

"Sam, and this is-"

"Your boyfriend, right?"

Sam blushed while Rory started to stutter. "N-No, we're just friends, close friends."

"You sure look like boyfriends to me."

"We're not, trust me. His brother would strangle me if I tried anything."

"Then, that's the best part. The danger of a relationship. If it's one of those boring ones, then how will you ever live?"

After the whole incident at the bus station with Meg and Sam saying goodbye to his older brother on the phone, Sam wanted to leave again - to go back Dean because he had this small feeling that he was in trouble. Of all the feelings he could have now, that's what he feels. Rory didn't want to leave. He knew that was selfish, but Dean didn't deserve their help after that whole scene in the car.

Rory was still furious at Dean for saying those things. He wasn't trying to get into his Sam's pants, no. All he wanted to do was to protect Jessica's boyfriend from being harmed verbally and physically. But he can't even do that, can he?

"Are you sure you want to do this?" Rory asked for the tenth time while they walked through the orchard, looking for Dean.

"Yeah, I'm sure." Sam answered back, flicking on his flashlight to see where he walking. "He's my brother, Rory. If he needs to be saved, then I need to rescue him."

"Or he could just be tied to a tree and be sacrificed, that works too." He said, making the younger Winchester roll his eyes.

"Oh look, I was right!" He continued when saw two figures tied to something. "But it's not a tree, I'm sad now."

Rory and Sam walked through the orchard, looking around to make sure no one was around to stop them nor the scarecrow was coming alive. When nothing out of the ordinary was seen, Sam bolted from the blonde's side and ran up to his brother untieing him out of his position. Dean looked thrilled to see his younger brother.

"How'd you get here?" Dean asked his brother.

"I, uh—I stole a car." Sam stuttered out, a smile gracing his features. "It was Rory's idea - you know, since he corrupts me." He nudged the blonde gently, getting a groan in response.

"Your elbow is too sharp, my friend."

"Well, I'm glad that worked for once." Dean didn't even spare a glance at the blonde. He looked around before speaking up again. "Sam, keep an eye on that scarecrow. He could come alive any minute."

"What scarecrow?"

Dean and Sam shared a nervous look before quickly untieing Emily, the girl who was tied up to be sacrificed with the older Winchester - now all four of them ran through the orchard, trying to find the First Tree, the source of the power for the scarecrow.

"Alright, now, this sacred tree you're talking about—"

"It's the source of its power."

"Who knew trees would actually be useful for a sacrifice." Rory breathed out, following the three of them behind slowly. "So when do we burn it? Now, or what?"

"Nah, in the morning. Let's just shag ass before Leather Face catches up." Dean answers him.

The four of them reach a clearing that seemed empty, but waiting for them are the elders and a few other townspeople. Rory glared at that, annoyed that they would even come up with this idea in the first place. Sacrificing people? How low can they get? They turn around but they noticed they're blocked in all directions.

"Please. Let us go." Emily looked at them pleadingly.

"It'll be over quickly, I promise." One of the men said, looking sad for the girl.

"You're a sadistic man, you know that? Sacrificing someone from your town, your own niece? What is wrong with you people?" Rory snapped, taking a step in front of Emily, protecting her.

"Now, listen here. You don't understand our ways-" All of a sudden, the scarecrow sticks his sickle through the man's stomach - making Emily and the woman next to him scream out in fright.

When the woman tried to run away, the scarecrow captured her as well, dragging her away while the four of them watched silently. Emily was in Dean's arms and Rory couldn't help but step a bit closer to Sam - not liking the idea of him being alone at the moment. Who knows if the scarecrow would come back for them, for revenge.

"Think she's gonna be alright?" Sam asked Dean when they watched Emily walk into the bus, waving at them as it pulled away.

"I hope so."

"I think she will." Rory spoke up from between them. "She deserves to find happiness - so knowing that, she'll get it hopefully."

"What about the townsfolk though? They'll just get away with it?"

"Well, what'll happen to the town will have to be punishment enough." Dean walked to the impala, looking at Sam and Rory. "So, can I drop you guys off somewhere?"

Sam and Rory shared a look before the younger Winchester spoke up to his brother. "No, I think you're stuck with me and Rory."

"What made you change your mind, Sam?"

"I didn't. I still wanna find Dad - and you're still a pain in the ass." Sam smiled gently while Dean nodded. "But, Jess and Mom—they're both gone. Dad is God knows where. You and me. We're all that's left. So, if we're gonna see this through, we're gonna do it together."

"I promised Sam I wouldn't leave him. So you're stuck with me too." Rory added with Dean turned to look at him. "We're all in this together, Angry Spice."

"Oh shut up, Rory. You know I hate that nickname."

"Don't worry, it's not bad as Sam's nickname, right Bambi?"

Sam was snickering but stopped to glare at the blonde when he spoke his nickname. "I hate you sometimes, Rory."

"Love you too, bro."

aye, this is my least favorite chapter that I've written- not happy with it, but hey, part one of this book is almost done. I'm so excited for season two, it'll be sad. Who's excited?! Only nine chapters left of part one.

Don't worry, Dean will eventually warm up to Rory again. I needed to add tension in the book because Supernatural is not all candy canes and rainbows.
