09: DARK PLACES, DARK SECRETS

Chapter nine: not edited

"Oh hell no, I'm not going in there." Rory complained loudly when he saw Sam flipping through the newspaper on the computer. "Sam, please. Don't tell Dean about it."

"Why not?" Sam chuckled, not breaking his eyes from the screen.

"I'm scared, Sammy. I can't deal with the dark nor the things that go bump in the night - especially if it's in that place." He pointed at the screen where a closed house was pictured brightly.

"I'll protect you, Rory. You know that."

That warmed the blonde's heart deeply. The thought of Sam wanting to protect him made the boy giddy inside. Sam was just precious, something that pulled Rory in. It wasn't all about his looks either. He didn't understand why people only cared about looks. It shouldn't be all about that. Personality counts just as much as looks do.

Rory grinned. "I would like that a lot, Bambi."

"Bambi?" Sam's face twisted into confusion.

"Yeah, Bambi. You know the deer from that Disney movie?"

"I know who Bambi is, Rory. I'm just wondering why you called me that."

"Oh." Rory's eyes brightened with a sly grin appearing on his face. "Yesterday, I called Dean a nickname, and it made me think, if he can have one, why not Sam?"

Sam chuckled. "You're unbelievable."

"I think you mean incredibly hot." He winked at him, causing a slight blush to appear on Sam's face. "So any word from your Dad?"

Before Sam could answer, the door to the motel room swung open, revealing a disheveled Dean Winchester with his eyes wide in discomfort. The eldest Winchester had just ran away from a pair of barking dogs when he received a call from his brother to come back to the motel about something that Rory didn't hear.

"Why the sour face, Sam?" Dean says while placing his jacket over one of the chairs.

"He's just being an angry spice." The blonde smirked when Dean rolled his eyes at the nickname he was given yesterday.

"I am not- It's called focusing."

"Right." Dean took a seat on one of the beds. "Did you hear from Caleb?"

Caleb was one of their hunter friends who apparently hadn't heard from John either. This whole finding their dad thing is getting old - if he wanted to be found, he would've been found. Rory had no clue what was going on with this whole situation, but it's getting quite to the point where the blonde wanted to hunt him down himself.

"Yeah." Sam typed away on the computer, not even sparing a glance in his brother's direction.

"He hasn't heard from him either?"

"Nope- neither has Jefferson or Pastor Jim."

Rory eyed something on the table. "What about the journal? There could possibly by a lead in there."

"No, same as last time I looked." Dean shook his head, frowning. "But there's nothing I can make out- I love the guy, but I swear, he writes like friggin' Yoda."

"I didn't find you as a Star Wars fan." Rory quirked an eyebrow in his direction. "When do you have the time to watch?"

"Never."

Rory hummed while Sam looked frustrated, speaking shortly after. "Maybe we should call the Feds. File a missing person's."

Sam and Dean started to argue once more. It was highly annoying to hear the brother's squabble over something so simple. Honestly, Rory doesn't know why Sam cares. From the talks of it, Sam and his dad don't get along at all. That's one of the reasons why Sam went to college in the first place, so why does he want to find him? But that all changed when Dean's phone started to ring loudly.

"Huh. I don't believe it."

"Who is it from?" Sam glanced at his brother when he saw him looking through his cellphone.

"His secret not lover." Rory states with a smirk. "I swear, if you ever get a girlfriend, you need to be more subtle. Your mouth is hanging too low, Angry Spice."

"First, stop calling me that, second, I don't have a secret girlfriend." Dean scoffed loudly, rolling his eyes before he cleared his throat after reading the message silently. "It's uh, a text message- It's coordinates."

"From Dad?"

"No, I think it's the Feds alerting us that Dean is on the most wanted list." Rory joked but no one in the room thought it was funny.

"Why the long face? He's given us coordinates before."

"Dean, the man can hardly work a toaster-"

"Who in the hell can't work a toaster?" The blonde blinked in shock. He turned to Sam with a frown. "Wasn't your Dad in the Marines?"

Sam mirrored his expression. "Yeah?"

"Then how did he get in if he can't work a simple toaster? That doesn't make sense."

"Rory-"

"Can you chuckleheads pay attention?" Dean snapped his fingers to get their attention. "We got more important issues than you guys talking about toasters."

"Yes, Dad." The blonde rolled his eyes. "Okay, so where are the coordinates pointing to, Dean?"

"Rockford, Illinois - that's interesting."

"How's that interesting?"

"I checked the local Rockford paper, and this cop, Walter Kelly, comes home from his shift, shoots his wife, then puts the gun in his mouth, blows his brains out. And earlier that night, Kelly and his partner responded to a call at the Roosevelt Asylum."

"Please don't tell me we have to go there next!"

"Why not? If it's a case, it's a case."

"Oh hell no. I'm not going there." Rory shook his head, turning to look at Sam. "Sam." He whined. "Convince your brother not to go there and I'll love you forever."

Dean rolled his eyes while Sam's lips inched up into a smile before frowning. "I don't get it. Why did Dad text us to go there?"

"Cause apparently it's a case." The blonde mocked what Dean said a couple minutes ago.

"Don't mock me, asshat."

"Make me." Rory smirked.

"I'm going to smack him, I'm going to, Sam."

"Come on, Rory. It's not that bad!"

Rory shook his head in denial. His eyes scaled every inch of the iron fence in front of him, the one that protected unwanted people from entering the asylum. The blonde didn't want to go in there, he refused to step one foot even close to the fence. Something about it gave off a bad vibe - like something was going to happen to them if they entered.

"Rory." Sam sighed, glancing at Dean, who looked ready to explode. "It's day time, nothing's going to happen. I promise you."

"How do you know? How do you know I won't become infected with the same thing that cop did?" The blonde threw his hands around, making his words more prominent.

The reason why they came to this asylum at this very moment was because some cop named Walter Kelly and his partner went to the same place but it ended up with Walter heading home and shooting his wife while taking his own life. Sam talked to his partner, Gunderson, about what happened and said their life was stable enough. So something was happening.

"That's why we have these." Dean held up his gun, to emphasize what he meant. "If it makes you feel better, you can have one."

"Sure-"

"Absolutely not. He can stand behind me." Sam shook his head, not liking the idea of Jessica's brother having a gun.

Rory muttered under his breath. "I can protect myself."

He shook his head while following both boys over the iron fence and into the front entrance of the asylum where a dusty area welcomed them inside. The asylum was deserted, making the hair on his neck stand up in fright. He didn't like dark places nor dark secrets. Call him a wimp, or whatever. At least he had the tendency to stay out of places like this.

"So apparently the cops chased the kids here into the south wing ." Sam says, pointing to the side that says 'South Wing.'

"South wing, huh?" Dean flips through his Dad's journal before stopping at a page in the book. "In 1972, three kids broke into the south wing, only one survived."

Rory swallowed hard. "What happened to the other kids?"

"Way he tells it, one of his friends went nuts and started lighting up the place."

"So whatever's going on, the south wing is the heart of it."

"Sounds like we need to leave." Rory went to turn around but stopped when he felt a hand on his shoulder. Turning around, he saw Sam looking down at him with his puppy dog eyes. "Nope. That's not going to work on me this time, Sam."

Sam didn't budge nor change the look on his face, making Rory groan. "Fine. I'll stay. But you better protect me, pretty boy."

And with that, Rory followed Dean into the South Wing with Sam trailing behind with pink cheeks. The hallway was dark, yet some of the light from the sun glared into it - casting some brightness onto the floor. That made the blonde few a bit better knowing that he can see where he was going.

"Man, electro-shock, lobotomies. They did some twisted stuff to these people." The oldest Winchester stated when they walked around the newest room. "Kinda like my man Jack in Cuckoo's Nest"

Dean gave Rory and Sam crazy eyes with a grin but it soon dropped when they ignored him. Looking around some more, Rory couldn't believe that a doctor would do that to their patients. No matter how crazy they would seem, they didn't deserve that. No one does.

"So. What do you think?" Dean asks, stopping to look at Sam. "Ghosts possessing people?"

"Maybe."

"Spirits driving them insane." Dean says, a grin overtaking his features. "Kinda like my man Jack in The Shining"

"Dean."

"What?"

"Shut up."

After the whole incident at the Roosevelt Asylum, all three of them decided to visit the relative to the doctor that was working on the patients there. Yet, when they go there, Sam decided to go in alone, leaving Dean and Rory out there alone. Which was not a good idea since they could argue at any time.

"What's taking him so long?"

Rory glanced at the door before looking at Dean. "He's doing his job, Dean. Getting information like you asked."

"Yeah, but it shouldn't take this long."

"You need to have more patience's. Whining about it won't make him come out any faster."

Dean sighed. "Yeah, maybe you're right."

"I know I am."

"So what are your intentions with-" Dean got cut off when the front door to the therapist office swung open to reveal Sam with a determined look on his face. "Dude! You were in there forever. What the hell were you talking about?"

"Just the hospital, you know." Sam explained to them both. "The south wing? It's where the housed the really hard cases. The psychotics, the criminally insane."

"Awesome." Rory stated sarcastically. "Can't wait to go tonight. So what else?"

"One night, in 64', they rioted. They attacked staff, attacked each other-"

"So the patients took over the asylum?"

"Apparently."

"Any deaths?"

"Some patients, some staff. I guess it was pretty gory. Some of the bodies were never even recovered, including our chief of staff, Ellicott."

"More awesome." The blonde sarcastically stated. "Can we just stop talking about this and visit the hositpal?"

When it became nightfall, all three of them headed into the asylum, two of them excited while one was freaking out - of course it was Rory. Even though Rory faced Bloody Mary, a possessed flight and faced Mary Winchester in ghost form, he couldn't handle the fact that he has to go into a haunted asylum where a riot broke out. Who knew how they would be in ghost form?

As they got inside, Sam pulled out his flashlight while Dean had a EMF meter, and Rory had a shotgun filled with rock salt. Even though, Sam was against the idea of the blonde having a gun, he knew it would make him feel better.

"Getting readings?"

"Yeah, big time."

"This place is orbing like crazy."

"Orbing? That's a funny word." Rory chuckled dryly, as he tried to keep his mind off the real issue there. "How many spirits do you think are here?"

"Probably multiple spirits out and about." Dean pointed out. "We gotta find 'em and burn the bodies, just be careful though. The only thing that makes me more nervous than a pissed off spirit... is the pissed off spirit of a psycho killer."

They keep walking, and the camera pans across to see a crazed-looking bald man strapped into a straitjacket in the corner - making Rory run after the two Winchesters in a heartbeat. Sam, Rory, and Dean moved around in different rooms, looking for any signs of bodies or spirits. But a scream from Sam made him stop and run into a different room.

In front of Sam was an an old woman; white haired, one eye bloody and hanging out, moving toward him. "Sam, get down!" When he did, Rory pointed the shotgun at the ghost before pulling the trigger, making it dissolve into nothing.

"Thanks." He breathed out.

"You're welcome, gorgeous."

Dean ran into the room. "Sam, are you okay?"

"Yeah, I'm fine. But that was weird though."

"I'm pretty sure if you see a spirit walking towards you that'll be weird." Rory grinned, proud of himself for his sarcastic remark. "But how was it weird?"

"She didn't attack me - all she was doing was walking towards me."

"She could've, Sam. You don't know."

"You don't know that."

"What I do know is that we need to find the bodies soon, before more spirits appear."

A noise comes from a room they are passing, making Dean raise his shotgun and Sam flicks on the torch and shines it into the room. All three of them approach a metal bed covered in a ragged sheet, on its side, seeing the top of a blonde head behind it. Bracing themselves, Sam reaches out and tips the bed over to reveal a girl crouched facing the corner.

"It's alright, we're not going to hurt you." Dean holds up his hand in surrender, to show he won't hurt her. "What's your name?"

"Katherine - Kat, for short."

"Okay. I'm Dean, this is Sam and Rory."

Sam glared at her when she started to check out Rory slowly. "What are you doing here!? Are you nuts?"

"Um, my boyfriend - Gavin-"

"Is he here?"

"Somewhere. He thought it would be fun, try and see some ghosts. I thought it was all just- you know-"

"Pretend." Rory finished for her, giving her a knowing look. "Listen to me, you'll be fine. We won't let anything happen to you or Gavin."

"It could be too late for him, I-I heard him scream."

"Alright, Kat? Come on." Dean motioned for her to follow him. "Sam's going to get you out of here and then we're going to find your boyfriend."

"No, no!" Katherine shook her head. "I'm not going to leave without Gavin. I'm coming with you"

"It's dangerous."

"That's why I gotta find him."

After they split up, Sam looking for Gavin while Rory, Dean, and Katherine stayed together. It was awkward for a minute before the blonde girl started to shout for her boyfriend, making the once quiet hallway loud with commotion. Rory knew Dean was getting annoyed to the point that he told her to be quiet and listen to everything she learned in a horror movie for once.

"Ow. You're hurting my arm." Katherine whimpered when she felt something pulling on her.

"What are you talking about?"

They turn to look at each other, realize they're too far apart to be touching, and look down. A disembodied hand is clutching Katherine's arm - making a scream leave the back of her throat when she was dragged into another room, the door slamming behind her. Dean races to it and struggles to pull it open, the blonde girl banging on it from the inside but it doesn't budge.

"Lemme out! Please!"

"Calm down, Kat. Just remain calm-"

"You remain calm! I have a right to freak out."

Dean smashes at the door with a metal pipe, then tries to jimmy it open. Nothing works. At the same time, Rory tries to shoot the lock with his gun, but again, nothing happens. Then, of course Sam and Gavin run down the hallway, heading in their direction, concern on their faces.

"What's going on?"

"She's inside with one of them."

"Help me!" She screams.

"Kat, it's not going to hurt you." Sam tries to reassure her. "Listen to me, you've got to face it. You've got to calm down."

Dean turned to Sam, astonished. "She's gotta what?!"

"These spirits, they're not trying to hurt us, they're trying to communicate. You gotta face it. You gotta listen to it."

After a few words were exchanged between all five of them, Katherine finally calmed down and faced the spirit head on. A few minutes later, the spirit whispered something in her ear and vanished, leaving her alone for the door to swing open. She walked out of the room, and looked at Sam.

"It whispered in my ear, 137."

"Thanks, guys." Katherine gave them a smile when they walked out of the asylum.

This was one eventful night. Sam got possessed, fixed by the doctor and he tried to kill Dean while Rory got knocked out by the brunette. He didn't understand why he was spared while Dean was in the end of the crossfire. Maybe it was something personal, and Rory had nothing to do with it. But of course, Dean broke free and burned the bones before anything happened, freeing them all from the asylum.

"Yeah, thanks" Gavin nodded with a grateful look.

"No more haunted asylums, okay?"

When they were gone and out of sight, Sam turned to Dean. "I'm sorry, man. I said some awful things back there."

"You remember all that?"

"Yeah. It's like I couldn't control it. But I didn't mean it, any of it."

"You didn't, huh?"

"No, of course not! Do we need to talk about this?"

Dean moved to get into the impala. "No. I'm not really in the sharing and caring kinda mood. I just wanna get some sleep."

Dean got into the car and before Rory could, Sam grabbed his arm. "Rory, wait. I'm sorry for knocking you out."

"Sam-"

"I never want to hurt you, okay? You're important to me."

"I know, Sam. I forgive you." Rory gave him a gentle smile. "You're also important to me as well."

Sam grinned, his dimples showing fully when he walked to the impala. He got inside while Rory gave one more look to the asylum before getting into the car himself. This was a great experience and he knew that he learned from it. Just like Sam and Dean did as well.

This is the longest chapter so far in Blood Haven. If I can remember correctly. I know there's hardly any action in it but that's because I'm not the best at writing those kind of scenes. But I will practice just for you guys. Please remember to comment and vote as much as you can. The next chapter will be the 'Scarecrow' episode.
