04: AWKWARD CONVERSATIONS
Chapter four: not edited
"I can't believe you slept on the couch last night." That was the first thing to leave Rory's mouth in the morning. He knew it was random, yet, at the sight of Sam Winchester stretched out on the leather couch made him frown in confusion. "There was plenty of room for you on the bed."
Sam scratched the back of his neck in nervousness. "Rory, there wasn't space for me. You had taken all the room up."
Rory couldn't help but frown at his words. If he knew that he was taking up all the room, he would've moved right away. Judging by the circles under Sam's eyes, he didn't get any sleep last night and that made his stomach lurch in guilt. The couch was an awful place to sleep, especially if someone had the height of a giraffe.
"Why didn't you wake me up?" Rory questioned the youngest Winchester. Looking around he noticed that his brother wasn't in the room. By the looks of it, Dean must have left the motel before both of them were awake.
"Dean and I had gotten in late last night." Sam started to explain the predicament that his brother and him were in last night. "After we dealt with the whole vengeful spirit thing in the lake, we took a shower elsewhere. By the time we got back, it was late at night. I didn't think it was right for me to disturb you."
The blonde's heart warmed at the thought of Sam watching out for him. Even though it had only been a day since they reunited, both of them knew that they needed to look out for each other. Jessica would've wanted Rory to protect Sam, the same way his sister wanted her boyfriend to look out for him.
Silence filled the room, an uneasy feeling settling between them. Rory knew this was the first time being alone together. He had so many questions, but he didn't know how to approach Sam with them. One wrong question could make the brunette either explode with anger or him having a mental breakdown - which none of them wanted. The last thing he wanted to see was Sam hurting.
"How are you feeling?" He asked in a cautious tone of voice, afraid that he might upset the younger man.
Sam turned to look over the arm rest of the couch. "I'm fine."
"You know when people say they're fine, that usually means they're not." Rory pointed out.
"Really, Rory. I am fine." Sam lied through his teeth. Truth was, he wasn't alright. The last couple nights have been hard. After seeing his girlfriend burning on the ceiling to the frequent nightmares at night, he was far from fine. Yet, he didn't want anyone to worry about him.
"If you say so." Rory knew that the man was lying, but he didn't press on. "So where's Dean? I didn't hear him leave this morning."
"It's my fault actually. I woke him up and he had a fit." Sam leaned forward to grab a magazine off the table. Flicking through the pages, he continued. "So, Dean decided to go to the local bar to get a drink."
"At eight in the morning?" The blonde raised an eyebrow after looking at the clock. "Well, that's unhealthy."
Sam let out a small chuckle. "You'll get used to him. I mean, being on the road with us will be an adventure for you."
"I don't think I'll ever get used to it. I mean, being in Dean's presence." Rory grinned, laughing when Sam gave him the bitch face that he was used to seeing. "Don't worry, sweetheart. I am never used to your presence either. Just look at those long legs and broad shoulders."
"Uh, thanks?" Sam blinked, not sure if what the blonde said was a compliment or not. The younger man cleared his throat. "So, uh, how have you been? You know since we haven't talked in a couple years or more."
"Fine." Rory pushed himself up in a sitting position, crossing one leg or another. "Nothing really has changed. I still work at the local bakery in New York- which I'll probably get fired from since I am on the road with you now."
"Why is that anyways?"
"Why, what?" He glanced at him in confusion.
"Why are you on the road with us? You had a nice life back in New York. Why waste it?" Sam frowned, not understanding why someone like Rory Moore would give up a great life for something like this.
Rory closed his eyes before responding. "Sam, my life back there wasn't me. Yes, I had a great job, a roommate who looked out for me, and a place to call home. But that was years ago. I am a different person now. After my parents died, I thought what else could happen? What could possibly make me change my lifestyle-"
"And then Jessica died." Sam finished his sentence for him. He pushed himself off the couch and sat on the edge of the bed, next to the blonde. "Listen Rory, I know my words won't make any of this feel better, but I am here for you. If you need a shoulder to cry on you have me, even if you need advice during the middle of the night, I'll be here to listen. Nothing will ever change that."

After Rory and Sam shared a heartfelt conversation between them, Dean managed to come back to the motel room unharmed. It surprised Rory that a person like Dean could actually get things done. He just seems like the person to get distracted a lot. But he wasn't any better. Rory was known to this family as the distracted one. During times at school, he would always cause trouble at test time - mainly because he couldn't focus on one thing at a time.
"Well, don't you guys look cozy." Dean said when he walked through the door, closing it with the end of his shoe. "What did I miss?"
"Oh, nothing much. Sam was just complaining about you-" A hand was slapped over his mouth, cutting off the rest of his sentence. A glare was sent towards Sam, who gave him one back.
Dean glanced between the pair before shrugging. "Well, when you guys decide to stop being weird let me know."
Rory rolled his eyes while Sam gave his brother an unimpressed look. Of course the eldest Winchester would say something like that. Dean seems to not have a filter, which could either be a bad or good thing. That's something Rory shared with him. Words seem to always flow out of his mouth, sometimes without thinking as well.
A phone started to ring loudly in the room, catching their attention. The source of the noise was coming from Dean's pocket, making him dig through his jeans to find the mobile device. Both Rory and Sam glanced at each other, wondering who could be calling at this hour.
Dean flipped open his phone. "Hello?"
Twiddling with his thumbs, Rory pressed his lips into a thin line while he waited for Dean to get off the phone with whoever he is talking to. Whoever it was, they must be in some kind of trouble since Dean had that look on his face. He saw out the corner of his eye, Sam was staring back the side of his face.
"Okay, we'll be there soon."
Dean hung up the phone before looking at the pair in front of him. "That was Jerry Panowski. Dad and I helped him a couple years ago with a poltergeist."
"It's not back, is it?" Sam prayed that it wasn't, even though he wasn't there at that time. Poltergeist are nasty beings- something that he didn't want to witness any time soon.
"No, thank god." Dean walked around the room, packing his things. "He wants to talk in person, so get up and start packing." He turned around to look at Rory. "You too, Rory."
Rory gave him a look of surprise. "What? Are you serious?"
"Do I look like I am serious?" Dean gave him an unimpressed look. "Hurry up before I change my mind."
Sam had never seen someone get up so fast before in his life. He was surprised that his older brother would give the blonde a chance. Maybe he finally realized that Rory was alone in the world- making him feel guilt if he left him behind. Which would be new for both of them.
➼
"Thanks for making the trip so quick." Jerry Panowski walked in front of the three men, leading them through an aisle of tools and tables. The man's shirt was neatly tucked into his pants while a small badge hung on his neck. "I ought to be doing you guys a favor, not the other way around."
Rory couldn't help but glance around while Sam and Dean conversed with the middle age man. His eyes wandered over all the tools, wondering how much it costed and how it would help the employers. But those thoughts where cut off when he heard his name being called from beside him.
"Huh?" Rory turned around to see Sam standing there, concern in his eyes. Dean and Jerry must have walked ahead while the blonde was in deep thought. "Sorry, what did you say?"
"I asked if you were okay." Sam stuffed his hands inside his pockets. "You spaced out during the whole conversation."
"Yeah, I am fine." Rory gave him a genuine smile. "It's just this place is bringing back childhood memories. My dad used to work in a place like this, and I remember him taking me into work to show me around his office."
Sam returned the smile. "That must have been nice."
"It was."
Rory and Sam walked down the remaining aisle, looking for Dean and Jerry. At the sound of Dean's loud laughter, both of them looked at each other before following the echo, hoping it would lead them in the right direction. After searching the rooms for a couple minutes, they stumbled across the right office.
"Finally. What took you so long?" Dean narrowed his eyes at his brother, knowing something was up.
Sam completely ignored his brother's question. "You had something to show us?"
"I do." Jerry nodded while grabbing a blank CD and placing it in the drive. "Normally I wouldn't have access to this, but it's the cockpit voice recorder for United Britannia flight 2485. It was one of ours."
A static echoed throughout the room, which made Rory cringe at the sound, but soon regained his posture when a frantic voice came from the drive. It was the pilot, who seemed to be freaking over something that was happening in the plane. He was telling the person behind the other line that the plane was experiencing mechanical difficulty's. But soon after he said those words, the weirdest thing happened, a loud whooshing sound came from the tape, making the blonde glance at Sam and Dean.
"Well that doesn't sound good." Dean commented while leaning forward to hear the tape more.
"No shit." Rory snorted at the man's reaction. "Dean, I expected more from you."
"Do you think we can get a copy of that?" Sam questioned Jerry, ignoring Rory and Dean's bickering. "We also need the list of survivors and access to the plane."
"I can give you the list of survivors, but the plane access will be tricky. They got it locked in security so you need to get permission to enter."
"That's no problem." Dean said, sharing a look with Sam.
Rory saw the look, and was afraid of their plans. This was the first time being on a hunt with the Winchester's, and he didn't know what to expect. He had no idea what was in store for him. But that's what makes it fun. Not knowing where this will lead the blonde next.
