Chapter 24: A Mini Date in the Hotel Room
With Sofia and Mateo off having their sleepover with their cousins, the hotel suite felt unusually quiet. Isa changed into a pair of soft lounge shorts and a tank top, while Jey wore a pair of sweats and a T-shirt. The exhaustion from the long day had started to settle in, but neither of them was ready to go to sleep just yet.
Jey glanced at Isa as she sat on the edge of the bed, scrolling through her phone. "You realize this is the first time we've had a quiet moment alone in... I don't even know how long?"
Isa smirked. "And what do you suggest we do with this rare, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity?"
Jey walked over to the small minibar and pulled out two bottles of water, tossing one to her. "Well, we could just pass out from exhaustion... or we could make the most of it."
She gave him a curious look. "And how exactly do we do that?"
Jey grinned and disappeared into the small kitchenette area. A few minutes later, he returned with a plate in his hands. "Room service came through," he said proudly, setting the plate between them on the bed.
Isa raised an eyebrow. "Chocolate-covered strawberries?"
Jey shrugged, plopping down next to her. "Figured we could do something romantic. Mini date, hotel-style."
Isa chuckled, shaking her head. "Smooth, Fatu. Real smooth."
"Hey, I try." Jey picked up a strawberry and held it out to her. "Come on, live a little."
Rolling her eyes but unable to hide her smile, Isa leaned in and took a bite. The sweetness of the chocolate mixed with the tartness of the strawberry, and for a moment, she let herself relax.
Jey leaned back against the headboard, watching her with a smirk. "Told you. Good choice."
Isa grabbed a strawberry and playfully held it up to his lips. "Your turn."
Jey took a slow bite, his eyes never leaving hers. "Mmm... yup, definitely a good idea."
The energy in the room shifted slightly-still lighthearted but tinged with something deeper. It was moments like these that reminded Isa of how effortless things had once been between them. Before the chaos, before the heartbreak.
Jey reached over, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. "This feels... nice."
Isa nodded, her voice softer now. "Yeah. It does."
They sat there for a while, just talking-about the kids, the trip, old memories, and even small, silly things that didn't matter. It felt natural, easy, like slipping into something familiar yet exciting.
Eventually, Jey stretched out and pulled Isa into his arms, letting her rest against his chest. "We should probably get some sleep," he murmured, his fingers tracing absent patterns on her back.
Isa closed her eyes, letting herself sink into the warmth of his embrace. "Yeah... probably."
Neither of them moved.
And for the first time in a long time, everything felt exactly how it was supposed to be.
Jey tilted his head slightly, a teasing grin forming on his lips as he glanced toward the large, spa-like bathtub in the bathroom. "You know... we've got the whole place to ourselves. We should take advantage of it."
Isa arched an eyebrow. "And what exactly are you suggesting?"
Jey smirked, pushing himself off the bed. "Come on, ma. Let's relax a little."
Before Isa could protest, Jey was already heading into the bathroom, turning on the water and adding in a generous amount of the hotel's complimentary bath soak. The scent of vanilla and lavender filled the air, and soon, the tub was foaming with thick bubbles.
Isa leaned against the doorway, arms crossed, watching him. "You really thought this through, huh?"
Jey shot her a wink as he tested the water. "Just tryna set the mood, baby."
Isa shook her head with a small laugh before finally giving in. She disappeared for a moment, grabbing a couple of fluffy towels before stepping into the bathroom. Jey was already stripping off his shirt, and Isa took her time undressing, feeling Jey's eyes on her the entire time.
They slid into the warm water together, the heat instantly relaxing their muscles. Isa leaned back against Jey's chest, his strong arms wrapping around her waist, pulling her closer.
"This is nice," she murmured, letting her head rest against his shoulder.
Jey pressed a slow kiss against her temple. "Yeah... just me and you. No stress, no drama." His fingers traced light circles along her arm, the intimate touch sending shivers down her spine.
For a while, they simply soaked in the moment, enjoying the warmth of the water and the peace that came with it. Jey reached for a loofah, running it gently over Isa's shoulders and down her arms. She closed her eyes, savoring the tender gesture.
"You always know how to take care of me," she said softly.
Jey smiled against her skin. "Always, baby."
When the water began to cool, they reluctantly got out, wrapping themselves in the plush hotel robes. Jey playfully ruffled a towel over Isa's damp hair, earning a light smack on his chest. "You're such a dork," she said, laughing.
"But you love it." Jey grinned, tossing the towel aside and pulling her toward the bed.
They climbed under the soft covers, Isa instinctively curling into Jey's side. He pulled her close, resting his forehead against hers. "This trip already feels different," he murmured. "Like... like we're getting back to us."
Isa traced a light pattern on his chest. "It does feel different."
Jey kissed her gently, slow and deep, before resting his head against hers. "Sleep, baby. We've got a big day tomorrow."
Isa let out a content sigh, her body melting into his. "Goodnight, Jey."
Jey tightened his hold around her. "Goodnight, ma."
And as they drifted off, wrapped up in each other, for the first time in a long time, everything felt right.
