KatAM/KSS

One of my favorite YouTubers, AntDude, just posted a review on Kirby and the Amazing Mirror (KatAM).

And he didn't like the game :(.

And he also said at the end of the video that he didn't like Squeak Squad and disliked the game even more (and he's a huge Kirby fan).

Is it just me who likes these two games? Because I find that most of the Kirby fanbase say that Crystal Shards is the best game (if they're retro Kirby fans or console gamers), Return to Dreamland is the best game (if they're new Kirby fans), or Super Star Ultra or Triple Deluxe/Planet Robobot (I consider them the same thing now) is the best game (if they're handheld gamers or new Kirby fans who haven't played other games in the series).

KatAM and KSS are my two favorite games in the Kirby series, and I don't really get why they get so much hate. They weren't even my first Kirby games (my first Kirby game was Return to Dream Land, but I didn't like the game at all and it made me dislike Kirby for a while).

A lot of the complaints about the games are about the story, bosses and new abilities. And I don't really understand these complaints, especially the storyline complaints. Kirby Squeak Squad had a simple plot, but that didn't really matter. At least the plot made sense and didn't have a lot of loopholes! How many people are trying to figure out what is "canon" in the new games? Kirby Squeak Squad didn't have a True Arena and a secret boss and special cutscenes and all that stuff they randomly throw in the new games. But there aren't any people trying to figure out what is canon in that game! The reason: the story was ended, the people who made the game didn't just randomly throw in some popular bosses and some random mode where you play as a different character just to make the game have more content (which ruins the story in the process). And why does Planet Robobot have less worlds than Kirby's adventure (AN NES GAME!!!)?

I actually think that KatAM had the best storyline out of all the Kirby games. The story might have seemed simple, but it is all down to what you think happened. It is not obvious what is going on. For example: why did Shadow Kirby help Kirby? How did he know where DMK is? Who is DMK in the first place? The plot was not really explained, which means that you can come up with your own Kirby canon, and try to figure out what is happening without some random side character (Magolor, Susie, etc.) explaining everything to you.

And if you still think the plots of these two games were bad, explain what happened in Super Star Ultra. Good luck.

A lot of people also complain about the bosses being boring and too easy.

These people have obviously never played KatAM's Boss Rush.

Also, as I said before in this random book, I cannot stand bosses in new Kirby games, especially the massive health bars that every character has, including Kirby. I don't want to spend over 30 minutes fighting a boss! And I don't use hammer, I prefer using weaker abilities like Spark. All the bosses in the new Kirby games are like fighting Dark Star in Bowser's inside story (took me 2 days to beat the Dark Star, I kept my DS on the charger and kept going back to it, lol).

I'm going to use the words of TacticalCat to describe new Kirby boss fights.

"All you have to do is sit in a stone and wait"

Bring back creepy Kirby boss fights! (I don't mean actually bring them back, but create new creepy boss fights instead of a face raider or a giant wasp).

And now the complaints about the new abilities.

KatAM introduced Mini, Smash, Missile, Magic and Cupid.

Kirby Squeak Squad introduced Bubble, Animal, Ghost and Metal.

What do all these abilities have in common?

They've only appeared in one game!

(With the exception of Cupid, which appeared in both. Technically Magic did too, but it was changed so much that I consider it a different ability. And Smash was changed to Smash Bros., which is a different ability).

Out of these abilities, my favorites are Bubble, Smash and Cupid.

But why haven't these abilities returned?

Animal, Metal and Mini are only really useful for puzzles and finding treasure chests. The new Kirby games don't really have abilities which are only used for puzzles.

Missile is basically Wheel ability going upwards. It's great for speedruns. I don't really get why it was removed. Same with Hi-Jump :( (Hi-Jump is my favorite copy ability).

Ghost was just random. And fun. But you don't unlock it until you find all the pieces of the ghost medal.

Magic was also random in KatAM (it was random what you got when using the ability) and in Squeak Squad it is an actual ability, although I prefer the randomness of the KatAM version.

Cupid is just Archer with wings. And it's way better than archer.

Smash makes Kirby Melee Kirby. It gives him all his Smash Bros moves, and is one of the best abilities in KatAM for Boss Rush and finding treasure chest. The Planet Robobot version isn't nearly as good.

Bubble uses the special feature of Squeak Squad, bubbles. This turns all enemies into bubbles which can be used later. I really like the Bubble mechanic in Squeak Squad, and I hope it returns in a later game.

I've also seen complaints about people getting lost in Amazing Mirror and saying that the world is too big and confusing. Seriously, just get good.

But Amazing Mirror is my favorite Kirby game because it was all new content: entirely new soundtrack, new levels, lots of new abilities, completely different play style. It was so different from normal Kirby. And it worked. How many games have managed to do that?

Also, KatAM and KSS are the only two Kirby games which aren't made by HAL.

I don't really enjoy Kirby any more. I was hoping for Planet Robobot to change my mind about what's happened to the series, but it only made me dislike it more. I don't really think that Kirby games will be as good as they were ever again (in my opinion). I hope that Nintendo will do something great for Kirby's 25th anniversary next year, but in the meantime I will be playing Kid Icarus Uprising and Sonic Adventure 2.

And wow that was a long rant! Almost 1100 words! And I was hoping for a short chapter on why Amazing Mirror is Amazing. Oh well. And well done for reading this far!

Anyway, what's everyone's favorite Kirby game?
