Rain and Tears
"For interrupting tears
Obliterate the etchings
Too costly for repairs."
-Emily Dickinson
Still waiting on Prince Charming, I get up from my red cushioning seat that had cracks in it, squeaking as I stood up.
I paced around the wall, tears stinging the back of my eyes, as I stared at hundreds of sunset photos on the back of the diner wall. So many memories... back to the night of homecoming.

Quick! Think quick! What do I do?!? I can't drive to catch up with him, I can't talk to him because he won't take my calls. But I couldn't just let him kill himself...
So, instead I took a short cut through the trees and ran as fast as my legs would go, ignoring all of the cuts and tree-branch-smacks I got, against my face. Finally, I made it.
He was about 10 seconds from the cliff and I stood right there in the middle of the road. My heels were knocking tiny rocks off of the edges and it wasn't easy to try and hide my fear with anger towards him.
Slamming the car door and jumping out, he stomped his way towards me, yelling. But I didn't hear anything he said... because this was the first time I saw him.
Not Nathan, trust me, I had seen much of him, many times.
But a beauiful boy made of bluish grey light stood in the road also, facing me, about one foot away. Then in a blink, he was close enough for me to feel his breath and his eyes were so.... so, alive. I could not comprehend this. He began to speak but I couldn't hear words and as Nate got closer, the blue boy disappeared.
"...I mean it, Jean! JEAN! Wait, are you okay? You look like you just saw a ghost or something."
He hadn't seen the blue boy too?? I'm probably losing it. If I said anything about it, this would be the affirmation to Mate, that I had finally gone mad. So, I tried my best to toss the memory and image of the boy over the cliff, behind me.
"Well, what'd you expect?! I just saved my best friend from committing suicide!"
For a while, the only sound was rain and thunder.
"Lets go to my car," he suggested. I followed.
We sat in his pick up, soaking wet. He was still in his uniform, I was in Jean shorts and a t shirt with make up running down my face. After a deafening period of silence, holding enough time for the Israelites to cross the desert again, I began to enjoy it. Looking over at him though, he was staring out the window refusing to look at me.
I slid my hand across the seat and grabbed his, which slightly shocked him and I halfway expected him to pull away, but he didn't. He took a deep shaky breathe and looked back out there window, almost like he was nervous of me. Me? What the heck for?
I kind of liked it though. I made small circles on the insides of the palms of his hands. He giggled like a little kid "Stop," he said, smiling.
"Stop what?" I asked. I leaned over and crawled up onto the seat. I kissed the side of his neck and let my fingers loosely travel down his chest."Stop this?"
"Jean... I... you're not mad at me?"
"Just don't take this away from me," I patted his chest, where his heart was. "Please. I wouldn't be able to live without you. You're my favorite pirate... but don't tell Mer!"
He laughed and leaned in to kiss me, but distracted by each other's eyes, lips, and touch, we forgot we were sitting on a highway. Then there were the headlights... and it was too late. Smash. Right into Nathan's pick up.
