Chapter Two
Papyrus POV
It's been about a week since we moved in, and it wasn't easy. Well, it wasn't easy for me anyways. Sans seemed as oblivious as ever to everything going on, bless his soul. I was lazing on the couch, trying to take a nap when Sans hurdled into the living room and onto my lap, which was NOT fun seeing as he landed on my pelvis. I groaned, doubling over while Sans bounced in his new spot on the couch, awaiting my attention.
"yes..?" I grumbled looking at him as I tried to recover from his accidental (was it though?) attack.
"LOOK AT THIS!!!!"
I plucked the paper from out of his phalanges and read it over. "volunteering? seriously bro?"
"YES! MAYBE THE HUMANS WILL LIKE US MORE IF WE HELP WITH THEIR SICK AND INJURED!"
'Huh, so he had noticed.' I didn't know how he could act so bubbly knowing that we were hated by everyone up here. "i don't know, sans.." One false move and we would probably be burned at the stake or something.
"IT'S WORTH A SHOT AT LEAST! PLEASE BROTHER?" He gave me his cute lil puppy dog sockets. Stars dammit, now I can't say no. Not to those eyes.
"fine.."
He jumped up. "YAY!!!!!!! WE START AT 5 AM SHARP!"
"five?!" Who the fuck gets up that early other than- oh. Of course he'd use this chance to make me get up early. "when do we really start?"
He laughed. "NOT TELLING!!!" He ran off before I could attempt to get answers.
----------------------
So that's how I ended up waking up at five in the morning the next day and waiting until ten to go to the hospital. I wasn't happy. I am NOT an early morning person like my bro. As we waited in line, Sans bounced around me like an excited child. It was worth waking up early if I can see him like this I suppose. Wasn't allowed to smoke on the premises though, so I was pretty much ready to fall asleep standing there. Wouldn't be the first time.
"Hi, are you two new to the volunteer program? I am too. What're your names?" A friendly southern voice said next to us. Probably the only person that's not putting extra distance between us.
I went into full alert mode as the person spoke, straightening out my posture a bit more and regarding her with suspicion. Sans had a completely different approach to her though.
"HELLO!! I'M THE MAGNIFICENT SANS, IT'S A PLEASURE TO MEET YOU!! I DIDN'T KNOW HUMANS CAME IN DIFFERENT VARIETIES TOO!" He held his hand out for her to shake.
She had short, black, and curly hair. Her skin is a warm brown and had caramel brown eyes. She giggled and looked up at him. "Well aren't you just sweet as a sugarcube in tea~ the name's Kayla Mclaine. Moved here recently from my home in New Orleans. And yes, humans have unique racial ethics too." She gently shook his hand. She seemed friendly enough.
"RACIAL... ETHICS... THAT'S THE TERM FOR IT?" Sans didn't want to screw up this chance at meeting a new human friend.
"Well that's the more "formal" term for it. But there's a lot of terms, both friendly and...not so friendly names for it. My ancestors were from Africa and was brought to America, along with many others, for slavery for the white people. But as time went on, and a Civil War and several other major activist's events happened, we're almost seen as equals now. Though there are some racist people that like to make our lives a little difficult. But we have Rights now, so it's okay. And since I was born here in America I don't need a green card or something to temporarily stay here. So technically, I would be an African American woman." She explained with detail to him. Gotta admit, she's really trying. That's new.
Sans mulled over her words. "I HAVE DECIDED TO STICK WITH THE MORE FORMAL TERM! HOW LONG DID IT TAKE FOR YOUR RACIAL ETHICS TO BECOME EQUAL?"
"Oh sugarcube. It took over a century to finally get where we are today. But even still then, some of my people still have it hard. Though some of them like to get into trouble. Which doesn't help. But the whites are just as guilty. But they make it seem like it's mainly our fault half the time... But I'm proud to say that we had a black president that served both terms! And that in itself is a tremendous step from how we were long ago."
"that's pretty neat. i'm papyrus, by the way, nice to meet you kayla." I decided to introduce myself while Sans thought on her words. It was time for the old whoopie cushion in the hand trick..
She was about to take my hand when a nurse with a clipboard came in and got everyone's attention.
"Okay everyone. My name is Sherry and I'll be the one in charge of you all for now. Now pair into groups of two and I'll show you where to go with the maps I have here to give out. If I get any complaints to the point where an employee or patient feels uncomfortable, you will be either reassigned to a different job or be dismissed for today. Is that understood?" She called out to us and the people in line.
"crystal."
"I UNDERSTAND, MISS SHERRY!!"
Sherry jumped a little by the volume of Sans' voice but smiled nervously at him as she waited for the paired groups to come to her.
"TALK TO YOU LATER, KAYLA!" Sans waved and grabbed my hand to drag me to Sherry.
3rd pov
Sans decided that he would try to attain equality as soon as possible, he would try his best! No matter how hard it would be. He was actually kinda glad monsters weren't the only ones, even though it probably sounded rude..
Kayla giggled. "See you later sugarcube~." She waved. Sans ran up to the head nurse with his brother in hand. Sherry had instructed one pair to go help with gardening. She then saw the tall skeletons and nervously smiled. She didn't hate monsters. She just didn't want to offend them.
"Let's see... You can work with... nurse Daryl who's helping Mr. Johnson. The patient is a bit elderly and is recovering from surgery on his broken leg. Sound good for you two?"
"WE ARE ON IT!" Sans agreed instantly.
"sure." Papyrus agreed more reluctantly.
"Okay good. Daryl is right here. He'll show you where the patient is."
"I CAN'T WAIT TO ASSIST! THIS WILL BE SO FUN!!" Sans chirped. Papyrus whispered something to Sans. "YOU THINK SO? Do you think they will like this volume better?"
"yeah, just don't want any trouble while we're here." Papyrus had noticed how Sherry jumped at Sans volume and asked him to tone it down... At least for now.
The male nurse showed the two to the recreational center where a cranky looking old man was complaining about the news from the TV.
"Mr. Johnson?" Daryl spoke gently to him to catch his attention.
"Hello Mr. Johnson, I'm the Magnificent Sans and I'm here to assist you along with my brother Papyrus here." Sans gave a cheerful grin.
The old man glared at them with his withered eyes. "And why the hell are you here? I thought they didn't hire you monsters at this hospital!" He scrutinized.
Sans grin faltered and Papyrus stepped in front of his brother. "sir, we are volunteering here to make peace with your species." He replied with a firm, yet calm, tone.
"And why the hell do you think I care?! You things could go crawl back to the hole where you came from!"
"Mr. Johnson!" The male nurse scolded. "I'm so sorry you two, he's a bit difficult to handle. Perhaps we could find someone else for you to help?" He offered apologetically.
"that'd be.. preferable." Papyrus agreed.
"And who in Hell's name would want you two demons?!" The cranky old man yelled out.
"I would like some help from you two. If you don't mind." A delicate voice sounded from the corner of the room.
Hayley's pov
I was trying to enjoy some time in the center doing my basic hand exercises and enjoying the warmth from the sun by the window. But that horrid old man kept screaming and yelling at the TV about the news. Not that I could blame him. Sometimes the news could really be a downer. But from what I heard on the TV, it said that the governor of Ebott was extending Monster rights. A good thing to me. But I guess for the damn old man, it's bad. Or in his words, "A load of bull."
When the nurse in charge of him came in, which I knew from his unique squeaky shoes, I thought I was finally going to be able to concentrate. But I was wrong. Apparently the nurse wasn't alone this time. Two volunteers were assigned to help out today and evidently got stuck with him.
'Those poor souls...' but before I finished that thought. The rude old man crudely mentioned that they were monsters. As I listened in, they were getting tongue lashed by the old man. And then I heard,
"And who in Hell's name would want you two demons?!"
I decided to take the leap and say, "I would like some help from you two. If you don't mind."
I can tell that all eyes fell on me.
'This should be interesting.' I thought to myself nervously.
Papyrus's pov
Upon hearing yet ANOTHER voice, I wanted to just poof away, but her voice was actually what stopped me. It was calm, quiet, and a bit defensive towards the old guy, not us. "sure, if that's ok with the nurse." I gestured to the human in question as I turned to her before realizing.
'Oh shit she's blind you dumb idiot!'
A small smile graced her pale face and giggled. "You just realized that I can't see, didn't you?" She said with humor in her tone.
"do you want the truth or one of those little white lies that make people temporarily feel better?" I shot back, knowing full well that we both knew the answer to both questions.
She looked like she had a somber aura around her, but she still had that smile on her face in understanding.
"Well? Are you going to stay over there with the racist old man? Or are you two gentlemen going to help me outside for me to do some exercises?" She said gently.
"c'mon sans, let's go." I gently pushed Sans ahead of me. I could tell that that guy's words had affected him.
"What's a demon?" He asked suddenly. I wasn't entirely sure myself.
"i think... it's something bad in some religions and cultures."
The girl frowned and motioned for one of us to push her in her wheelchair.
"I got a handle on this." I took up the handles, giving a shit eating grin as Sans groaned.
"PAPYRUS NO!"
"papyrus yes."
The girl giggled at my pun and Sans' reaction.
"You two are a hoot." She chirped as I pushed her towards the door.
"Hold on for a minute,'' she suddenly said.
"i don't hoot, i'm not an owl." I winked as Sans groaned again as I came to a stop.
She giggled as slowly turned her head and focused her pale blue eyes on the cranky old man with a scowl on her face.
"Hey! Johnson!" She shouted to him.
"What the hell do you want?!"
"I relearned a hand practice exercise recently and wanted to show it off to you."
He looked confused until she slowly raised her hand and gave him the bird.
The old man wasn't pleased. He had a look that could only be described as shock, anger, and aghast. I think this is the longest time I heard him be quiet. And judging by the look by the male nurse's face, I could tell that this was probably true and his first time seeing it too.
She turned away and pointed forward. "Okay, you can go now. My work here is done." She calmly said with a calm shit eating smile.
I waited to laugh until after we got outside. "pft- heheheheheh- that look on his face- heheheheh!"
"I don't know... wasn't that kind of... mean?" Sans questioned.
"And what he said about you and your brother wasn't?" She asked with questioned.
"Well, yeah... but two wrongs don't make a right." Blue replied.
My smile faltered. He really wanted the humans to like us, didn't he?
"That's also true. But you can't let people treat you like that or walk all over you just because you're different. We humans today might not remember what we did to your kind all those centuries ago, but we ourselves have been fighting each other for our rights over the other for so long. And even today, we still do. But now your kind has entered the battlefield. You can't just take all the hits and expect to live through it all. You just need to have a little... BACKBONE." She joked at the end.
Sans gawked while I snickered. "NOW LOOK WHAT YOU'VE DONE! YOU INFECTED THE HUMAN!"
"i don't think that's how it works.. other than the joke, do you get what she's saying?" I asked.
"Yeah... it is kind of like what Kayla was saying earlier about her racial ethics."
I nodded. "yep. and a bit more. sometimes it's ok to be mean if you're defending yourself or your beliefs. right?"
"Right. Listen to your brother Sans. There's no harm in fighting for what you think is right and for someone you care for." She said with a gentle smile.
It was then that I realized something. How did she know us? And does she know that we're skeleton monsters? I thought she couldn't see?
"how do you know sans' name? how do you know we're skeletons?" I immediately got defensive.
"Woah. Calm down bone boy. I wasn't sure of it at first. But I remembered your voices from the news. They like to exaggerate the type of monsters that they "interview". So when I heard your voices more closely, I remembered your names."
I relaxed a little. That made sense.. "alright, sorry." I apologized for my aggressive behaviors.
She kept her smile and started to feel around the chair.
"whatcha looking for, if i may ask?" I asked curiously.
Her hands finally landed on mine that were still holding the wheelchair handles. She gripped them firm but gentle and it oddly felt comforting.
I stared for a moment, processing. 'Well. I'll be damned.' This is happening now. I couldn't help but smile at the gesture.
"It's going to be alright. I can tell that you're very protective of your brother. That's a good trait to have for a family. Just know that not EVERYONE is out to get you. But other than the slight paranoia..." she shifted just slightly to cast her blind eyes at me.
"I think you'd be a great father someday."
Ok, usually I'm great at handling people flirting with me. How else could I not be so bothered by hand holding? But that comment completely threw me off and I turned bright tangerine.
She then turned and gave a closed eye smile to Sans. "Don't you think so Sans?" She asked sweetly.
"INDEED! THOUGH, I THINK HE'D HAVE THE MOTHER DO MOST OF THE WORK, HE IS RATHER LAZY." Sans replied with a wide grin.
'Can all blind people read people as good as she'd just read me?' I wondered to myself in an attempt to distract myself from their words.
"Now, I need to do my daily exercises on doing just the normal things. And one of them is walking a certain amount of distance. You see, I'm sick with a strange illness that the doctors haven't figured out yet is one of the reasons why I can't walk the way that I used to. And for my blindness. So they're having me undergo various treatments that are still in development. One of the treatments I want to try is the one that this monster lady has been studying for a while now. But since monster rights are still being made, they haven't exactly let her do anything to test me. Hopefully what that old man was screeching about was something about the medical rights. But for now, the doctors are having me do these exercises so I don't totally forget how to do the basic functions. Normally I'd have my nurse with me, but she hasn't shown up today because of the flu. So I'm having various nurses come around the clock to check on me. But I know enough of the exercises that I can show you guys how to help me with it. First, let's start with some basic hand movements...." She began to show Sans and I how to make certain hand signals that were close to sign language.
"HUH, KIND OF REMINDS ME OF WINGDINGS."
"i thought we agreed to call it hands?"
"HOW ABOUT WE CALL IT SKELETON SIGN LANGUAGE, THAT IS WHAT IT IS AFTER ALL."
"you know what, i'm cool with that. skele sign language."
"YOU CAN SHORTCUT ANYTHING... CAN'T YOU?"
"yep."
She laughed at our bickering. "I'm an only child so I wouldn't know what it's like to have siblings or any banter. I'm kinda jealous~" she giggled.
"are ya now? maybe sans will let ya have me for a night~." I teased. 'Payback time.'
She giggled as she slightly blushed. "Sure~ as long as you make an honest woman and mother out of me~" she flirted back.
'Shit-' I was blushing again, I won't back down though. "don't know about that, but i wouldn't mind hearing ya scream my name~."
Her grin grew twice as big. "I know multiple languages. Which one do you want me to say your name~?"
Sans walked away, plugging his "ears".
"no kidding? now i wanna hear them all." I was genuinely curious about that.
"Estas segura de eso mi amor~~~" she playfully purred.
'Holy shit, that's pretty fucking hot-'
"i don't know what you just said, but that's cool. what was that?" I asked, trying to keep my composure.
She had a cheeky grin on her face. "It's Spanish. Also known as the language of love. Would you like to hear more? I'd be willing to scream a few "lines" for you in private~." She was pretty persistent on winning.
I gave a challenging grin. 'She and I don't back down, this could take awhile.'
"ya know, that'd be pretty hot. did you know it's scientifically proven that when a guy likes a girl, he'll look her in the eyes, but when a girl likes a guy she'll look away. so, can you look me in the eyes~?"
She grinned. "I know I'm blind and I can't look you in the eyes. But they say that when someone has found their soulmate, they don't look in the eyes, they look in their soul. So... it doesn't take a scientist to know that just because I can't see you like this, doesn't mean I can't see your soul with mine. And to me, your soul is as bright and beautiful as the star Vega~." She said with confidence and genuine interest.
I chuckled, though it was a bit forced. My soul wasn't bright, nor was it beautiful. It was cracked with years of pain and suffering. 'That's not the point though..' I walked to the front of her wheelchair, putting my hands on the armrests and leaning in so that our faces were inches apart. "truer words have never been said. so... what is your soul telling you now?" I was serious, a bit scared, a bit excited. 'Do I even deserve romance?'
She raised her hands slowly and seemed to feel in front of her until she put one hand on the side of my face, and the other gently on where my soul is on my sweatshirt.
"That were alike... that we've been through hell and back... that we think we're alone and that no one cares. And I thought that for the longest time. Especially when my family left me for dead. But now... my soul thinks that I'm not alone anymore." She said with a bright closed eyed smile that seemed to make the sun shine on her brighter.
My soul fluttered. 'She's right.' "damn, i think you won. time to claim your prize~" I leaned in the last few inches, pressing my teeth to her soft, plump lips. My hand rose up, phalanges running gently through her soft blonde hair. 'Feels like silk.'
She pressed her lips harder on my teeth. I wanted to go further but then I heard a "CLICK". I looked to the side and saw Sans with a big excited grin on his face held his phone in front of him. It was then I realized... he took a picture of us kissing.
"sans. give me that phone. n o w." I hissed. That is NOT going on the Undernet.
"I DON'T KNOW BROTHER~ THIS COULD BE MY CHANCE AT PAYBACK FOR ALL THOSE PUNS~" You can practically see the blue little horns and tail sticking out as he made a cheeky face.
I froze. 'Fuuuuuuuck.' "what do i have to do to make you delete that?" I reasoned.
Sans looked like he was actually thinking about it. And held up three fingers.
1. DO NOT PUN EVERY CHANCE YOU GET AND LAY OFF ON THE PRANKS.
2. IF YOU PLAN TO MAKE THIS WORK, ACTUALLY PUT SOME BACKBONE INTO IT! MWEH HEH!
AND FINALLY..."
He trailed off with a shit eating grin. Which, to my surprise, I didn't know he could do.
"MAKE ME A PROUD UNCLE WITH A SISTER I CAN CALL MY OWN! MWEH, HEH, HEH, HEH!!!"
I pondered his demands, a blush rising as I thought about the last one. 'Proud of that pun though..' "deal. i'll lay off the pranks, try not to pun so much, try to put effort into my relationship, and uh... heh heh.. work on that last one.." 'I won't let anyone hurt her if there's anything I can do about it.' I promised myself.
From the side of my vision. I can see a shocked "Really?!" expression on her face. And a heavy blush on her cheeks.
"You know... you still haven't even asked me my name yet." She giggled.
"your name..? heh, your name is hayley corren." I'd instinctively checked her when we first met. I knew her name, her stats, and some other basic info.
She looked at me confused.
"I know you guys through the news. What's your excuse may I ask Honey Bee~?"
'Oh shit-' I glanced at Sans. He didn't know.. "magic, of course~." I smirked.
She raised a brow and smirked at me. "I'm sure that's the case. But for simplicities sake, I'll take what I can get." She chuckled. But then her expression changed from coy to that of confusion and pain. She clutched her chest where her soul was.
"It-it hurts!!! Call... the nurses...!!!" She managed to breathe out.
"Sans, get the nurse!" I yelled, as I ran a check to see if it had any effects on her stats, especially her HP.
She had the main trait of Perseverance and the secondary trait of Patience. I was surprised to see that hers was cracked like mine. But she was in worse shape. Her soul was unusually small and in the cracks seemed to ooze this black goo. I could only stare at the state she was in with horror.
'What the hell is leaking from her soul? Can humans even fix this? She needs Undyne's help, she or I would know more on what to do than anyone here.' I picked her up and carried her inside, meeting one of the nurses halfway. From there, she was quickly whisked away from me. I wanted to follow, but they wouldn't let me.
3rd pov
Hayley was taken to the ER and was given a high injection of pain and numbing medicine. This seemed to help a little but ultimately they had to knock her out with anesthesia in order for her to rest. This is all they could do in terms of these attacks.
Papyrus was in the waiting room for the nurse to come out and tell him what happened. When the nurse did, he went up to her and started asking questions.
"how's she doing? will she be alright? do you know what happened?" he asked hurriedly, his worry for her quite apparent.
The nurse was surprised for a minute. "Are you a friend of Hayley's?" They asked unsure.
"something like that, have you seen her soul?" He looked at the nurse, unsure if humans could even see souls anymore the way monsters could.
The nurse looked very confused. "I don't think I follow... I'm sorry if I have to ask, but can you explain a bit more in detail?"
"when she started having that attack... i checked her soul. it's in rough shape, and is most definitely the source of all her pain and suffering. it's the cause of her sickness.." He trailed off thinking about it. That black ooze seemed familiar somehow..
The nurse looked even more confused. But she had a quick idea.
"I may not know at what you're getting at but I think I have her nurse's contact information. The reason why she's not here is because she's sick with the flu. But I think if I can give her a call, she can answer your questions. She was there for Hayley before she went totally blind. Just give me a second..." she looked at her phone and started dialing a number. It rang for a few minutes until a scratchy female voice answered. The nurse relayed the new information that she had been questioned on and about Hayley's attack. The voice on the other end asked if the monster could talk to her. The nurse handed the phone to him.
"Carol, wants to talk to you..."
Papyrus took the phone. "ello, do you know anything?" He certainly hoped so.
"Well that's one way to officially greet somebody. Before I do, as her nurse, it's my job to know who she's acquainted with. So may I ask who you are to her?"
"papyrus the skeleton... boyfriend." He replied with little hesitation.
There was a bit of hesitated silence over the phone. Until a sigh was heard. "Okay I'll question this more later on, but right now, if you know what's wrong with her, then I'm all ears. You said something about her soul? Hayley said something a while back about something like that and how this monster lady was doing some research about it and was looking for volunteers to her study. She wanted to be a part of it but back then the monsters were still fighting for rights. I just heard today that starting tomorrow morning, that monster lady and her team is supposed to set up one of their stations at the hospital here. I was about to call Hayley to let her know. But I see that she's in pain right now. Since she's had an attack today, she won't wake up till tomorrow morning. The drugs she's on puts her to sleep for a long time. I'll be there tomorrow since I have mostly gotten over my cold." She explained.
"ok, well i'll tell ya what i know, but a question before i do... this "monster lady" wouldn't happen to be named Undyne, would she?" If that was the case, then he wouldn't have to worry as much. Undyne was the best in her field, after all. He may even join her in the study, if it meant helping out Hayley.
"...Yes... I think that was her name. Hayley talked about her quite a lot before she went blind. She thoroughly believed that if none of the doctors could cure her through physical means then she wanted to see if it was her soul."
"it's her soul all right. i saw it myself, it was so small... much smaller than that of an adult human's soul, and riddled with cracks. then there was that- that ooze... i've never seen anything like it." He was getting choked up, he'd only just met her, and he was already afraid of losing her.
".... I can tell that she means a lot to you. Hayley needs that. She hasn't had that for a while. When she talked about the soul study, she also mentioned how strong emotions played apart of it. Well... When her family thought that she was a lost cause because the best of the doctors didn't know what to do, they just.... Gave up on her. Stopped coming altogether. After that day, of when they said goodbye to her, the next day, she lost her sight. I always suspected that, because of them, she had gotten worse and that Hayley was right. Please if you know anything about this. Please, help this poor girl." Carol's voice choked on a sob.
"i will..." He never told anyone, of course he never tells anyone anything, but before he became the Judge, before Undyne became the Royal Scientist, and after the last Royal Scientist fell, he'd attempted the job. He had a PhD in Soul Sciences, Monster Biology, and even Human Anatomy. He was qualified. He would help his little Queen Bee.
"Thank you... I'll talk later tomorrow. See you then. Please watch over her. She tends to try to do things that she can't do yet." She sadly chuckled.
"i see. will do, miss...?" He couldn't exactly run a check when he couldn't see who he was talking to.
"Oh! Right. I'm Miss Carol Baxter. Her family's former nurse. I stuck by Hayley all throughout this time. I have known her since she was a baby. Thank you... Papyrus?"
He chuckled raspily. "correct... so you know my queen bee well then... can you tell me more about her? Since she kinda can't right now?" He wanted to know more about her and more about this family whose asses he wanted to kick.
Carol sighed deeply as though she were reliving a headache. "Her family, the Correns, are an...very old fashioned wealthy family. Her parents were married out of an arranged marriage. No love in it whatsoever. And when it came to trying to give birth to an heir... it was very difficult to say the least. So when Hayley came along, it was practically a miracle. Although when she was born, she was born premature and had to spend several weeks at the hospital. The parents were only concerned whether she lived mainly because of not because they loved her, but because it was so hard to even try to give birth to another child. When she was out of the hospital, she would have frequent fevers.
"Some of them were harsher than others. I had been hired to take care of the wife when Hayley was still in her mother's womb. I had been the one through pretty much everything since she was born. Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if she saw me more as a mother figure than the one who gave birth to her. *Sigh* On one particular day. She suffered what seemed to be a stroke when she woke up in the morning. I took her to the hospital as soon as I could. That was when her illness started to become worse. Her parents paid the medical bills and often times visited her. But that was all they did. As far as offering words of comfort during these visits.... I highly doubt that they were anything but. I wouldn't know too much since they always ordered me out of the room when they visited. Although I doubt it was any better than the way they treated her at home. A pawn in their little game of power and money....
"After the monsters were released and the study about souls came out, they out of the blue called me on my phone and asked to talk to Hayley, I was a bit hesitant, but Hayley insisted. I never should've let her talk to them. Because after the call hung up, she was devastated and cried non stop. The next morning she tried to "wake up" but all she saw was black. It was then I knew that she was blind. From then on, she insisted that she wanted to try that new study. But without the financial aid from her "parents" and the laws against your kind, she wouldn't have a chance.
"The only reason that she's still receiving treatment from this hospital is because I insisted that she'd be a great candidate for any sort of new treatments that they had developed. And so far, none of them has worked. By now the hospital's staff know her by heart and live her to death. We're all working our hardest to keep her alive. And if this treatment works, then we welcome you and your medical team with open arms. Please. She's everything to me. Please help her..." she choked out.
"i will, i will." He promised. "tell ya what, i'm good friends with dr. undyne, and i could probably get hayley treated for free, and if undyne don't do it, then i will myself. I have the phd necessary to do it. she's my soulmate, and i'll do anything for her."
There was a deafening silence over the phone.
"..."
He waited anxiously, he really wanted this woman, Hayley's mother figure's approval. He would kick Hayley's "parents" asses later.
The woman choked on a sob. "Thank you... If it was possible... I would hug you over the phone. I think you would be good for her. Papyrus, thank you." She sobbed out. You could tell that all those worried and stress filled nights were finally being let out.
"you're welcome..." He let her cry, he listened to her release all of her negative thoughts and feelings. He actually didn't mind. "ya know... i'll take that hug tomorrow. if ya still want it." He grinned a bit.
She chuckled through the sobbing. "I-I'll definitely take that into consideration tomorrow..."
"consideration huh, my bro is a better hugger than me if you would take that into consideration too. he loves hugs."
She chuckled harder. " Thank you... for everything. Good day Papyrus. I look forward to working with you tomorrow."
"see ya tomorrow, i would tell ya a pun, but i promised i wouldn't use them excessively soo.. ill see you tomorrow." He chuckled.
".... That was... terrILL-ble." She chuckled.
"nyeh heh heh.. nice one, see ya tomorrow."
"See you later Papyrus." She hung up the phone. As Papyrus handed the phone back to the previous nurse. He heard his brother laughing. He turned behind himself and saw that he was posing for that woman Kayla. She giggled at him with a slight blush to her cheeks.
"what the hell..?" When did they get all buddy buddy?
Sans said something else and she laughed. She then told him something and did something that Papyrus thought was impossible. She kissed him on the cheek bone and walked away, sweetly waving to him behind. Sans had a heavy blue blush on his skull. As he smiled widely and rubbed the spot where she pecked him.
"What the hell!" His jaw dropped. "when the hell-" Was it possible for innocent little Sans to have a soulmate? Of course, he knew it was, but it was still VERY difficult to process.
Sans head snapped around, having heard his brother. He tried to act as if that hadn't just happened before Papyrus sockets as he skipped over to him. "HELLO BROTHER! IS HAYLEY DOING OK?"
"what- when- i was only on the phone for like an hour?!" Papyrus sputtered.
"I DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT~" Sans singsonged.
"th-the kiss! that was clearly a kiss!"
"WHAT KISS?" Sans asked innocently. "THERE WAS NO KISS."
"sans!"
"PAPYRUS."
Papyrus sighed in defeat. Until he got an idea.
"when ya taking her out?"
"T-TAKING HER OUT?" Sans went blue in the face.
"tomorrow?" He continued to probe.
Sans totally hadn't offered to go to her house to make tacos for her tomorrow. He went bluer if that was possible.
"oh~ i wonder who's gonna become the proud uncle first~?" He teased.
"PAPYRUS.." Sans whined, trying to hide his face.
The two continued their bickering until they got home later that night. It was then that they discovered that Kayla was their next door neighbor. She waved to them happily and blew a kiss to Sans while she walked inside of her house.
He blushed heavily, glancing at Papyrus as he did so. Papyrus was giving him a devious grin.
"hey kayla!"
She poked her head out of her door with a curious face.
"night, sis!"
"PAPYRUS-"
The younger skeleton laughed as he went into their own house.
Kayla giggled and sent a wink and a small wave to Sans as she closed her door.
Sans retreated into the house with a blush and hearts in his sockets.
