Chapter 4
Jason told me I would be meeting Alpha Jackson in the morning, 10 o'clock to be exact. We would be meeting in a conference room on the other side of the pack house, where Alpha Jackson would ask me some questions, just to get to know me a little better, make sure I'm not a threat to the pack in any way.
I guessed they'd been screening their visitors this way ever since the attack. Jesse, who I'd learned loves to talk, told me the rogues that kidnapped the family had been staying in the pack house, pretending to be traveling to a pack nearby. It would explain why the screening is one of the only things Alpha Jackson does himself; its personal.
I put on simple black dress, with sleeves that stopped at my elbows, curled my hair, and did my makeup. I knew the Alpha wouldn't be able to see me, but it was more out of respect. Checking the time on my phone, I quickly put my shoes on before rushing out the door.
I met Jason at the office door and he smiled at my appearance, understanding why I still chose to look nice. I retuned the smile, and he began leading me through the many halls. The further we walked to the right side of the house, the quieter it got. The voices I had heard of people in their rooms had died out to silence.
"Does anyone stay on this side of the house?" I asked Jason curiously.
"Only Aiden- I mean, Alpha Jackson." He answered, quickly correcting himself.
We continued walking in silence for a while, before finally stopping at a door labeled Conference Room 2
"Ok, before we go in, I know I probably don't have to tell you this, but I just want to be sure." He said. "I'm sure Jesse's already told you everything, that girl loves to talk." He said, shaking his head. "Aiden is blind, he has a terrible past, and to be frank, he can be a little rude. Just pretend not to notice any of it." He told me, placing his hand on the doorknob.
"Of course." I replied, nodding my head in agreement.
"Here we go." He said, opening the door to a room occupied by nothing but a large table and a bunch of empty chairs.
"Like I said, he can be rude." He sighed. "Lets just take a seat and wait for him to get here."
We sat down, and I glanced at Jason who looked like he was arguing with someone in his head, I didn't have to wonder who it was.
Suddenly the scent I'd been picking up on my whole stay here began to grow stronger and stronger.
I tried to sit still and remain calm, but I was afraid if I missed it I wouldn't find him again. The moment I was about to tell Jason I had to go and run from the room, the door opened.
I looked up, surprised, and my eyes met the most beautiful crystal blue ones I'd ever seen. I was mesmerized as I trailed my eyes from his, to the rest of his face. He had light blonde hair that curled just slightly, and was nearly in his eyes, and the most beautiful face I'd ever seen.
I couldn't help the smile that grew on my face as I realized I'd found him, or, I thought, he must have found me.
My mate.
The smile fell from my face as he proceeded through the door to the front of the room, unfazed.
"Ok." He said sharply. "I'm just here to ask you a few questions Miss Hadden, then you can be on your way."
I stared at him in shock, my lips slightly parted, and eyes wide. Then it struck me.
He hadn't walked in this room because he was trying to find me, he walked in this room because he was Alpha Jackson.
And Alpha Jackson is blind.
I felt a pain in my chest as I realized he had no idea I was his mate because he couldn't see me.
"First off," He started, snapping me out of it, "welcome to my pack, I'm Alpha Jackson." He said, extending his hand towards me.
I took his hand softly, feeling the tingles run up my arm, confirming what I already knew to be true. He jumped slightly at the feeling, not expecting it.
"Um.. I um.." He stuttered, shocked. "I need to ask some questions." He spoke, but I felt it was more to himself than to me.
"What pack are you from?" He asked me, his voice sounding distracted. ."
"Um, Silver Claw" I answered softly, nervous to talk to him, wondering if he knew who I was.
"Ok, thats.. Thats good." He said quickly.
I looked at Jason, who looked extremely confused due to what was happening.
"Aiden, you ok?" He asked, his voice sounding slightly concerned.
"What?" Aiden asked sounding annoyed, "I'm fine."
"I don't know, you just seem a little out of it." Jason stated.
"The screening is over." Aiden said sharply, folding his hands together. "You can go now, Miss Hadden. Jason, stay, I need to talk to you."
I looked to Jason, who gave me a small smile, and I quickly left the room.
What on earth just happened? I asked myself.
AIDEN P.O.V
"What was that about?" Jason asked, as the sound of the door shutting traveled through the room.
"I don't want her staying here." I stated.
"What?" Jason's confused voice replied. "Aiden, she's a nice girl. Lucy talked about her for hours after they got back, she just wants to find her mate." He argued.
"I said no, I want her gone." I replied firmly, turning my back to Aiden.
"Aiden, you know I always take your side on things, and I respect you, but I'm not going to on this. Unless you give me a good reason, she's staying." He says, defiantly.
"A good reason?" I ask, my anger growing, "How about, 'I'm alpha, do as I say.'" I growl.
"You've hid out in your room for three years now, you only leave the house once a year. I know what happened was awful, and I can't even begin to understand, but if you want me to take your orders like an alpha, then you need to step up and start acting like one again." He replied, his voice growing slightly louder. "This isn't what your father would have wanted for you, or Luna Cara."
"Do not tell me what my parents would have wanted. Their dead, and you do not speak for them." I shouted, slamming my fist down on the table.
"I'm sorry Aiden, I'm not making her leave." He said calmly, before I heard the sound of the door shutting again.
I placed my head in my hands, letting out a frustrated sigh.
I don't know what it was about her, but I was going crazy trying to figure it out. The thought she may be my mate crossed my mind, but I quickly pushed it away. I didn't have a mate, I was sure of it. I was alone, I would always be alone.
The dark blanket of depression was over me again, suffocating me. The feeling of darkness around me intensified when I opened my eyes, revealing nothing but more darkness. It was like this everyday, but had gotten worse the last few months.
Every time I opened my eyes, and saw that darkness I was reminded. Reminded I shouldn't be here, but I was 'lucky' as so many people had called it.
Lucky that my entire family was dead.
Lucky that I was blind.
Lucky that even if she was my mate, I wouldn't be able to look into her eyes and know for sure.
Lucky that everyday I felt the guilt of making it out of that cabin, where my family died.
I scoffed.
Yes, I was so very lucky.
