Chapter 70 • Whatever It Takes
To say that JJ had a rough night would be an understatement. It's not that important if my sleep gets interrupted, but JJ absolutely needs her rest, which is quite difficult when she's already uncomfortable and when the nurses keep barging in to wake her every hour or so.
I suggested to her that eating breakfast will help make up for her interrupted sleep, but when her food is restricted to only healthy and smaller portions, it's hard to keep a positive attitude, and having to wait on the nurse to check on her before she can even eat makes it difficult.
I wish I could do more to help her, but I'm not a medical professional and I'm blind, so I'm pretty much useless, which is why I'm proud of the one thing I've come up with. Hopefully my brill idea will lift JJ's spirits because I don't know of much else I can do.
A loud, prolonged slurp brings me out of my thoughts and I turn my head in JJ's direction.
"Finished with your water?"
"Ahhh. Yep. I don't know what's the point since they're just going to refill it and I'll have to drink it again."
"For the good of you and the babies. Gotta stay hydrated," I kindly remind her, gently squeezing her hand.
"Yeah, I guess you're right," she says and a loud noise makes us laugh.
"Was that your stomach growling?"
"Yeah. I guess the twins are hungry, too. Ugh, it's almost seven. The morning shift nurse should be here any minute. I hope they get here fast."
"I'm sorry, love," I say, bringing her hand without the needle in it up to my lips and I kiss it. "Want me to buzz them and check when someone can come?"
"Nah, it's okay. I'm one of the closest rooms to the nurse's station so I should be at the beginning of the rounds," she reasons and I agree with a hum. "I wonder what time they'll discharge me today. I'd love to get home before lunch. We have a lot of unpacking to do and I need to get ready for work tomorrow."
"Uh, about that, Mum offered to unpack for us so we won't have to when we get home. She said she's not going to go through our things, she'll just put our clothes up so she can store the suitcases in the shed. That was nice of her to offer. Wasn't it, love?" With every second of her silence and the stillness of her hand in mine, I can feel the small hairs on the back of my neck stand up. "She also said she'd take care of Romeo and Juliet and Maggie."
She sniffs softly and I assume she's upset, so I decide not to bring up the other issue of her not being able to go to work at this moment. It would absolutely crush her.
A knock at the door interrupts our tense moment and I couldn't be more grateful.
"Hello, good morning," a friendly male voice says and I let go of JJ's hand, sitting up in the chair. I take my sunnies from my shirt pocket and unfold them to slide on my face. "I'm Spencer and I'll be your nurse for the day. I assume you're JJ?"
"You assume correctly and this is my husband, Harry."
"Nice to . . . oh, uhm, nice to meet you, Harry."
I take it by his hesitation that he's figured out I'm blind and I nod with a cordial smile, "Likewise, Spencer."
He clears his throat, "Did you stay here overnight?"
"Mhm, I did."
"That's nice. It helps when the spouse or loved one is with the patient. Makes the time go by faster and better and is overall good for their recovery," he says and JJ and I agree with a hum. "Alright, let's get down to business. How are you feeling this morning, JJ?"
"My back aches but I'm hungry more than anything."
"I can fluff those pillows for your back. Now let's get on with it so we can get you something to eat. It's Sunday, so we have some good food today. You'll love dinner. It's pot roast and it's fantastic, for hospital-grade food. I've had it before."
"Dinner? Oh no no no no no. I won't be here long enough for dinner. Dr. Tate said I'd only have to stay for one night and that was last night, so I get to go home today, meaning before dinner."
"Let's check on you and the babies now and see where we are and we'll go from there. Okay?"
JJ groans, "Alright, fine. What do you need from me?"
"Let's start with one of your fingers. I need to take your blood sugar."
I know this is a challenge for JJ and I wish I could take the pain of being stuck by a needle away from her, but that's impossible. I realize they need to check her blood sugar to make sure she and the babies are healthy and safe.
"Okay, it's higher than we'd like it to be."
"What is it?" I ask out of curiosity.
"Two-hundred and one. We prefer it to be lower than one-forty. Have you eaten anything this morning yet?"
"No, not a thing. Just the rest of my water. Am I going to be alright? What about the babies?"
"I'm going to update your Obstetrician on your stats this morning and I'm sure they'll discuss treatment options with you."
"Treatment? That sounds so . . . no, I don't want treatment. I-I'll cut out sugary foods from my diet forever. I can do this. I promise. Harry?"
"Yes, love, m'right here with you. It's gonna be okay."
She takes my outstretched hand in hers and I give it a squeeze.
"I understand your concern, JJ, but your doctor will explain in detail the best way to help you and your babies, by whatever means. Okay?" Spencer urges and JJ hums and her voice cracks, so I know she's upset right now. "Alright. M'gonna record your vitals and get the latest on the fetal activity, then we can get you something to eat. Here's a tissue, love."
JJ lets go of my hand and it breaks my heart to know my wife is crying and I can't do a bloody thing about it. JJ sniffs softly and I feel her hand in mine again, this time a little tighter.
"Your babies seem to have been up all night having a party in your tummy. You might have some trouble come their teenage years," Spencer says, breaking the awkward silence.
"How's that now?"
"The machine is showing quite a bit of activity."
"What? Like contractions?"
"Small ones."
"I didn't even feel them."
"Thanks to the medicine, they weren't as intense. Now, Baby A still has a strong heart beat, but we still need to keep a close eye on Baby B. The high blood sugar can cause some unnecessary stress for the fetuses, especially Baby B. All the more important for Dr. Tate and you to discuss treatments for your high blood sugar."
"Alright, alright. I promise to do whatever it takes to keep them safe. Just . . . please. I already love them so much."
Her desperate and quivery voice rips my heart out, but I know she's going to be a wonderful mum.
"Just rest now. I'll send for someone to bring you your breakfast. Lemme get you some more water in the meantime."
"Thank you," she says and the squeaky sound of his shoes on the flooring lets me know he's leaving the room. "God, I hope he hurries. I'm rather parched right now."
"Do you want some of my water?" I offer, feeling around on the table next to me.
"Yeah, actually I do. Here, I've got it. It's closer to me anyways," she says. "Ahhh. Never thought I'd say this, but that's extremely good water."
"When you're thirsty, it tastes better."
"Mhm," she hums cutely. "I seriously hope Dr. Tate can look over my chart and get here this morning so he can start me on whatever treatment I need and be discharged today. I need to check my emails for work and get my things ready for tomorrow."
"JJ, love, I think your work will understand if you don't come in for a little while. In fact, we can call and ask Emmet what paperwork you need to sign. I'm sure there's something out there that applies to a health emergency."
"Harry, I'm already going to be missing work because of maternity leave when the babies arrive. I don't want to miss any more than I have to. Catching up is a bitch."
"Here's your wa-, oh no, is now not a good time?"
I recognize Spencer's voice and I turn in his direction, "It's fine. We're just discussing some things."
"O-okay. Here's your water, love, and I snuck another pillow for you."
"Aw, thank you so much."
"Where would you like it?"
"Right behind my bum, please. Like wedged under- Ah, yeah right there. That's nice," she sighs and it makes me grin. "Thank you, Spencer."
"You're welcome, oh, and I just found out that the kitchen staff will be serving breakfast in a few minutes, so you'll be eating in no time."
"Wonderful," JJ and I say at the same time, causing us to laugh.
"Oh I can definitely tell you two have been together for a long time."
"Actually, we really haven't, compared to other married couples," JJ says with a giggle. "We met on a blind date almost two years ago and we just got married this year."
"That's all? I would've guessed longer. Well I guess that makes you two soulmates and look at you, expecting twins."
I grin, "Yeah, we're soulmates, ready to start the next chapter of our lives with two added characters."
"Yeah, we're just anticipating the publishing date," JJ adds, making me smile.
"Aw, you two are adorable. I can tell you'll be my favourite patient of the day. Alright, I'm gonna go make my rounds and I'll check in with you when I hear back from your OBGYN."
"That sounds lovely. Thanks," JJ says, sighing out a breath and I hear the door shut. "We're alone now."
Her choice of words make me smirk, "That sounds borderline dirty."
"Hmm? Oh, no, I'm not even thinking about sex or anything to do with sex right now."
"No, I wasn't suggesting we do anything now, love. It just struck me as funny."
"Hm, I guess," she blows out a breath and the ticking sound of the clock becomes louder to me.
This moment makes me appreciate the times JJ felt frisky before because I think this situation has changed her and I don't blame her. Our goal is to get her and our babies healthy to finish out this pregnancy so they can be born healthy, and I'll be damned if I let anyone, even myself, risk that.
A knock at the door brings me out of my thoughts. "Breakfast is here."
"How lovely," JJ says and I hear the nurse come closer. "Too bad this plain porridge can't turn into some bacon and sausage with beans and buttered toast."
"Sorry, I didn't bring my magic wand to work," the woman says and I smile cordially. "Enjoy. I'll be back later to collect the tray."
"Great. Thanks," JJ says and I hear the clanking of what I assume is silverware. "Do you want a bite? I can share."
"No, thank you, love. Remember Mum brought me a lunchbox of snacks and whatnot for you and me. You enjoy that and I'll have a granola bar. She said she put some in here."
"Alright. If you're sure."
"I'm positive. Here; I'll get one so I can eat with you. Do you see where the bag is?"
"Uhm, on the windowsill behind you to your right, sorry, on your left."***
