Chapter 40 - Two Peas In A Pod
A/N: This is just a gentle reminder that I'm not a medical expert and I've never had a kid. However, I've googled everything mentioned. I'm learning a lot! But if something is incorrect, please be kind in your comments.
🚨 Trigger Warning 🚨
Pregnancy weight gain is discussed. Just know that Harry and I love you no matter what the scale says ❤️
To say this past month has been stressful, overwhelming and positively wonderful would be an understatement. JJ and I have taken the time to read two more books so we could learn more about what to expect with our twins and even though some of the aspects of pregnancy and delivery aren't necessarily clean and pain free, I can't wait to finally become a father.
I've felt our twins grow inside my wife's belly for a month now, felt her belly grow, I've talked to them to let them know I'm their father and that I already love them. I'm excited to meet them and I'm nervously excited for JJ and I to start our life as parents.
With each day, JJ has become more comfortable with the idea of having the twins and more comfortable with her growing body. The hormones have kept me on my toes; I don't know if she'll burst into tears one minute or jump my bones the next minute, but either way, I'm the happiest I've ever been.
I can't begin to imagine what she's feeling as a woman, but all I know is that I have to be there for her physically and emotionally and that's exactly why I've taken the morning off work so I could be with her for the second month check-up.
The smell of sanitizer and doctor office is strong, but JJ's grip on my hand that she's holding is stronger. It's been quite some time since the nurse has left our examination room after taking JJ's vitals and now we're waiting for Dr. Tate.
A huffed breath coming from the right of me makes me smile and I reach down to pet Maggie's head. "It shouldn't be much longer, Maggie. You're a good girl."
"She's excited about her little brothers or sisters," JJ says and I agree with a smile. "I hope it won't be much longer cos I'm hungry."
"M'sorry, love. Did you bring your container of grapes in with us? I'll get them for you."
She sighs heavily, "I ate them all on the way here. Should've brought more."
"We'll remember that for next time. Can you wait until we get lunch after this? Or I can go ask one of the nurses if they have any snacks."
"No, it's oka-" a couple of knocks interrupts JJ and I hear the door open.
"Is everyone decent?"
"Yes, you can come in, doctor. I'm ready," JJ answers and lets go of my hand.
"Splendid. Good morning, JJ. And a good morning to you, Harry."
"G'morning, doctor."
"It's always good to see the partner come along for the check-up appointments, and the older siblings."
I smile politely in his direction, fully knowing he didn't mean any harm with his choice of wording.
"I'm certainly lucky, and so are the twins," JJ says and I feel her hand on my shoulder.
Dr. Tate hums absentmindedly and I hear the sound of something rolling on the tile floor. "Alright, let's take a look. Shall we?"
"Y-yes, by all means, doctor, but I have a favor to ask of you. Could you use other words that don't have to do with seeing, please? Not everyone here has their eyesight. I'd really appreciate it." JJ's soft tone and compassionate words melt my heart because I know she truly cares for me.
"My apologies, JJ and I apologize to you, Harry. I promise it's just out of habit. But I will work on that. You have my word."
"Apology accepted and very much appreciated," I reply.
"Alright, I'm going to put some gel on your lower abdomen so the transducer can glide more easily. The gel might be a tad cold."
"Oof. It is cold. Brrr," JJ giggles and it makes me grin knowing she's in a good mood right now.
"Here we go, folks."
The gentle sound of sonic waves beat at a steady pulse and my jaw drops. "Is that their heartbeats?"
"Unfortunately it's not. It's still a bit too early to detect. You should be able to hear the heartbeats at the next appointment. This noise is the sound waves creating the image to appear on the screen. Let me just take a look here. Oh, I'm sorry. Habit again."
"No, it's fine," I reply and JJ gives my hand a little squeeze.
"I love you," she whispers, stroking my hand with her thumb.
"I love you, too, JJ."
"Here we go; Baby A and Baby B are happy little two peas in a pod."
"Oh my God," JJ breathes out. "Those are our babies. They're so much bigger than last time."
Dr. Tate chuckles, "That's a good thing. They're roughly an inch long. Baby A is just a smidge longer, but that's perfectly normal. To put their size into perspective, they're about the size of a medium-sized strawberry."
"Oo, strawberries sound really good right now," JJ says and I can't help but smile.
"That's good. Eat all the fruit and veg that you crave. We need to keep them healthy and growing," Dr. Tate encourages. "You're right on track with the weight gain. Five pounds in one month is wonderful for a twin pregnancy."
"That's what we read in the book. I've tried wrapping my head around the whole gaining weight thing, but I remind myself that it's best for the twins."
"That's correct. Speaking of; how has the task of eating healthful foods been going?"
"Surprisingly well, and my husband has joined me in eating healthy for our twins."
"That's wonderful. Making it a team effort is easier. I know it's tough with all the fried temptation out there, but it'll be worth it in a few months or so. I'm just going to examine the fetuses now to make sure everything is how it should be."
JJ hums in acknowledgement and I hear the crackling of the examination table paper, "Hey, you."
Her whisper captures my attention, "Yes, love? Do you need something?"
"No. I just wanted to tell you that I love you very much."
She guides my hand to her cheek and I take her not-so-subtle hint for a kiss. I lean in closer to her, using my hand on her cheek as a guide and I kiss my best friend, my wife and the mother of my children.
"Sorry to interrupt, but the ultrasound process is complete," Dr. Tate says and I peck JJ's lips before leaning back in my chair. "You'll be happy to know everything is fine."
"That's a relief," JJ sighs and I slide my hand down to her shoulder to her arm so I can hold her hand.
"Your uterus is healthy and both amniotic sacs and placentas are fine. You're ten weeks and two days along and both fetuses are growing splendidly. I've freeze framed this picture so you can take the sonogram with you. Let me just wipe off this gel for you and then we're done."
"Yes, please. Oh and could we have a few copies of the sonogram?"
"I can give you two."
A high-pitched whimper turns into a sob, "But I wanted to put a sonogram in each of the twins' baby books that we've started and I want to have one to show our family and friends. I thought when our twins grow up that they'd like to have their own baby book and if I can't give them that, then I'm a terrible mum."
"No, love you're a wonderful mum," I encourage her, gently stroking her hand.
"I can make you three copies," Dr. Tate replies.
JJ sniffs, "You can? Oh thank you, doctor. I appreciate it and my twins appreciate it, too. Ahhh, okay. So is there anything I should be doing until next month's appointment?"
I'm surprised at how quickly the hormones have come and gone, but I'm glad she's not crying anymore.
"Just keep doing what you're doing. Everything is progressing as it should, but I still want to keep an eye- I mean, a close watch-," he huffs out a breath, "we need to monitor your pregnancy closely. Dr. Thorburn will conduct your next appointment, so I'll see-, I mean I'll conduct the one after that. He and I tag team for our expecting patients so we're sure one of us will be on duty and aware of your chart when you go into labor."
"That makes sense," JJ says as if she's still thinking about it. "Thank you for explaining and for correcting those words."
"You're welcome. Emily will check you out at the reception desk when you're ready. Have a lovely day."
"Thank you, doctor. You, too," I say, holding out my hand and he cordially shakes it. I wait a few seconds and I hear the door shut, turning my attention back to my wife. "Are you okay, love?"
"Am I okay? I'm more than okay," she says with a giggle and I exhale a relieved breath. "Can you move back a bit? I'm gonna get up so I can fix my hair."
"Sure, just guide me so I don't knock anything over."
"Of course," she says, placing her hands on my shoulders and she scoots me back with the chair. "There you go. I'll be over by the mirror in the opposite corner."
"That's fine," I reply, reaching down to pet Maggie's head.
"There we go. O-oh my God."
"What? What is it, JJ? Is something wrong?"
"No. It's just that my belly really looks pregnant. Like it's just suddenly popped. I look like an expectant mum," she explains with a breathy giggle and I sigh in relief that there's nothing wrong.
"Can I feel it?"
"Yeah, of course. Here, I'll help you," JJ says, placing her hand on mine and she guides me to stand up. Her hand leads my hand to her belly and I cup my hand around the prominent roundness. "Feel?"
As my hand smoothes over the front of her belly, a small smile tugs at the corners of my mouth and I start to feel emotional.
"Our twins are in there. And we'll get to meet them soon."
"Mhm. That's right. I can't wait. Oh God, you're incredibly sexy right now in that shirt and those bum-hugging jeans. Mm, I wish you could take me right here on this examination table. Might be fun with the stirrups."
"JJ," I chuckle in response, feeling my cheeks burn in embarrassment.
"What? We can use the gel as lube."
"JJ- wha- I'm not sure, I mean-"
"I was just joking, love," she giggles and I nervously breathe out with a smile. "Are we ready to go?"
"Y-yeah, we are."
"Okay, lemme get my purse," she leaves my embrace and I stand here still in shock that she'd suggest a quickie in the doctor's office. I just hope my blood starts flowing somewhere other than my crotch so the nurses don't notice. "Y'know, I liked this check-up better than the last."
"Yeah? Why's that?"
"Well, for one, I didn't have anything shoved up inside me this time. He just used the thing on my belly that doctors use for ultrasounds in movies or shows on the tellie, and two, I'm in a much better place than last time."
"Better place?"
"I mean mentally; about the whole getting pregnant outside of our timeline. I can't change it and if I'm being honest, I wouldn't want to change it now. I'm one-hundred percent happy, especially with you."
I feel her arms wrap around my shoulders and I grin, wrapping my arms around her waist.
"I'm one-hundred percent happy with you, JJ," I grin, leaning down and she catches my hint for a kiss. "Mm, are we ready?"
"Yes. And now we have to stop at the very first place we come across so I can eat before we head back to work because I'm positively starving."
"Let's go get something to eat."***
