Chapter 26 • No Questions Asked
"Mm, this is my favourite place in the world," JJ sighs, relaxing her body into mine and I agree with a hum. "I wouldn't want to go to sleep next to anyone else for the rest of my life."
"I wouldn't want that either," I grin at my joke, aiming to kiss the top of her head that's resting on my chest.
"You know what I meant," she playfully chides with a tap to my arm.
"I do, and I wouldn't want to fall asleep next to anyone else but you, JJ."
Her lazy giggle turns into a yawn which makes me yawn. I turn my head on my pillow so I don't blow my breath on her and I reach up to rub my eyes. As our bodies settle in our bed, I feel myself become relaxed and ready to fall asleep.
"I'm so worried."
Her words bring me out of any type of sleep I was drifting into and I turn to face her.
"Worried about what?"
"I'm worried that I'll let the cat out of the bag before we have the opportunity to tell everyone."
"Oh," I breathe out in relief, wrapping my arm around her waist. "We're gonna invite everyone over on Sunday. It's not that far away."
"I know, but I'm just so excited. What if your mum mentions the word baby or something related to that while we're over there tomorrow? I'll crack. I just know I'll crack and then other people will have their feelings hurt that we didn't tell them, too."
"JJ, love, everything will be fine. I promise. We'll visit with her for a bit, pick up Maggie and then swing by Trish's to pick up Romeo and Juliet and then we'll come home. It will all work-"
I'm interrupted by a loud snore and I realize she's fallen asleep. I smile fondly, pressing a light kiss to her forehead and I settle on my back. Exhaustion has taken over and I let out one more yawn, feeling sleep wash over me.

The sound of muffled retching stirs me from my sleep and I feel around the bed next to me. She's not there so I assume she's in the loo and not just the noise of our neighbors coming through the wall.
I pull back the covers, moving to sit on the edge of the bed and I feel for my white cane on the nightstand. As I unfold it, I stand up and count the eleven paces over to the door. Using my hand to feel on the wall down the hallway, I walk over to the loo where the unsettling noise becomes louder. I recognize the doorway and tap my knuckles on the door.
"JJ? Are you okay?"
She groans in answer and I twist the doorknob to open the door. As I walk over to the toilet, she gags and retches again. The rubber end of my white cane bumps into what I assume is JJ on the floor and I crouch down to be near her.
"It's okay. I'm here," I calmly say, reaching my hand out for her back. She breathes heavily while I stroke her back and I hear the toilet flush.
"I'm done," she says, immediately spraying what I recognize as the air freshener.
"Okay. Wanna brush your teeth?"
She hums in favor and I stand back up to get out of her way. Even though I feel quite helpless right now, I want to help. I want to be able to get JJ anything she needs. I want to feel needed. I just don't know how useful a blind man will be in this.
"Whew, that was unpleasant," she giggles, bringing me out of my thoughts.
"Do you feel better?"
"Eh, a little. I researched what can help settle morning sickness and it said Ginger Ale and saltine crackers are common, but we don't have any."
"We can stop at the grocery before we go to Mum's," I offer.
"That sounds good. C'mere, I need a hug. Don't worry, I won't ask for a kiss," she says and I feel her arms wrap around my shoulders. As I hold her in my arms, I exhale a relieved breath knowing that she's okay.
"How long have you been up?"
She hums in thought, ending our hug, "I don't know, about a half hour? The vomiting only started just now, mind you."
"Oh okay. Do you want to lay back down? What time is it?"
"Uhm, it's a quarter after seven, so there's no sense in going back to bed, even though I'm still exhausted. Do you want some breakfast?"
"I'd love some, but I need to wee first."
"Alright, I'll give you privacy. I'll be in the kitchen."
"Okay. I won't be long."
The sound of the door clicking lets me know she's shut the door and I feel around for the toilet seat. After I relieve myself, I tuck myself back in my boxers and I drop the toilet seat back down. I press the handle to flush the toilet and I touch the countertop to help guide me over to the sink.
After I wash my hands, I pat my face with cool water to help wake me up. I dab my face dry with the soft towel and reach for my toothbrush and tube of toothpaste.
With fresh breath now, I grab my white cane and open the door. As I make my way down the hallway, I smile at the sound of JJ singing a tune I can't quite recognize. The sound of the coffee maker brewing and the strong aroma help wake me up and I feel around the corner to step into the kitchen.
"Mm, smells good."
"Yeah? It's just coffee right now. I can't decide what sounds good to eat. What are you in the mood for?"
"I can just make a bowl of cereal so you don't have to cook."
"I don't mind cooking. In fact, I should probably do as much cooking as possible now because I don't know if I'll feel like it when I get further along."
"That makes sense. Hey, we can even get those precooked meals to make it easier. I can just pop those in the microwave."
A high-pitched sound and a sniffle take me by surprise and I walk over toward the sound. She touches my shoulder and immediately embraces me in a hug while she starts to cry.
"Should I just assume from now on that it's the hormones, unless you tell me otherwise?"
She giggles through her tears, leaning back and she blows out a minty breath, "M'sorry."
"What? No, you don't have to be sorry, love. It's nature. You can't help it. It's because of the two little miracles you're growing in your belly. It's okay. In fact, you have permission to cry whenever and wherever you'd like, no questions asked. Okay?"
She giggles, smoothing her hands on my chest, "Thank you, Harry."
"Of course. Now, what can I do to help make breakfast? I think the coffee's done since I don't hear it dripping anymore."
"Yeah. How about an egg toastie?"
"That actually sounds really good. Does it sound good to you?"
"I'm thinking I'll just have the toast dry to settle my stomach, but I can make you one," she offers and I hum in doubt.
"Only if you're sure."
"Sure I'm sure," she pecks my lips. "C'mon, you can have a seat at the breakfast bar and keep me company while I cook." She guides my hand to the back of the counter stool and I pull it away from the bar so I can sit down. "Want some coffee now?"
"Yes, please. I need it. Didn't quite sleep all that well last night for some reason."
"Yeah? Why's that? The mug is directly in front of you. Gimme your hand. I'll guide it to the handle," she says and I feel the warm handle on the mug. I thank her as I bring it up to my lips and I take a slow sip. "So why didn't you sleep well?"
Swallowing the strong roasted goodness, I carefully set the mug down on the counter.
"I guess my mind was just going over all that's going to happen and what I need to do to prepare for the twins, and I think I was excited about the fact that we'll bring Maggie home today."
"I'll allow excitement and good reasons for you not being able to sleep, but not bad overwhelming thoughts. Okay?"
"Alright, love," I agree with a smile just to appease her and I take another sip of my coffee. The sound of egg crackling lets me know she's cooking now and the aroma makes my stomach growl. "Can I get the plates?"
"I've got it, but thank you. It's almost ready anyways. M'just gonna sprinkle some cheese on top and there you go. Care for salt and pepper?"
"Yes, please. Is your toast done?"
"It's just about to pop up. The shakers are to the left of your plate."
"Thanks," I reach out and feel for the Braille label that reads Salt and I sprinkle some in what I'm aiming for the middle of my plate. After I do the same with the pepper, I feel for the crunchy toast and take a bite. "Mm."
"Good?"
"Mhm," I hum in favor, reaching for my coffee and I take a sip. "Very good. Is your toast done? Come eat with me."
"I suppose I can," she muses and I hear the footsteps of her walking out of the kitchen. I sense her presence next to me and I smile in her direction.
"This is very good, by the way."
"I'm glad," she says and I recognize the sound of a crunch. "Mm, it is good."
"So would you like to stop at the grocery store before or after we go to Mum's?"
"I suppose before. That way we can come straight home after Trish's. We can even take a walkie around the neighborhood. That can count as exercise, I suppose."
"We definitely can. Y'know, I have to say that I'm very proud of you."
"Proud? What for?"
"For already being a good mum. Our twins are very lucky."
"Aw, you're very sweet," she coos and I grin in her direction, bringing my egg toast up to take another bite. "Uh-oh, some yolk is dripping out. Oh God."
Her muffled words take me by surprise and she pushes past me to leave. I assume she's headed to the loo and I set my toast down on the plate so I can grab my white cane.
"I'll be right there," I call out, scooting off the stool and with the guidance of my white cane, I walk towards the sound of my poor wife retching again. I walk over to her and reach out for her shoulder. "It's okay, JJ. I'm here. You're okay."
She groans in response, moving from my touch and I hear the toilet flush. I stay still as she moves around me and I hear the water faucet running, so I assume she's brushing her teeth again.
"Can I get you anything?"
She hums in a negative tone and I feel for the edge of the counter to help me walk over to her. The gurgling sound lets me know she's almost finished and I feel around for the hand towel on the countertop.
"Here you go, love," I hold it out and she spits into the sink.
"Thanks. Oh my God, and I have to go through nine months of this?"
"Technically a little less than eight now since you're six weeks along."
"That's right. Hm, I'll have to research how long this lasts, though."
"We can do that now if you'd like."
"Well, I think that'll have to wait. We should probably get dressed so we can leave."
"Okay, if you're sure."
"I'm sure."***
