Chapter 13
The next morning, dad made pancakes, with my help, so John would have a special breakfast.
"John, are you ready for school?" I asked John.
"Yeah, I'm kind of nervous no one will like me, but I'm ready." he replied and took a bite of his pancake.
"You won't be in my classes but you'll be in the same building. If you need me, which you probably won't, just go to the principal's office and the principal will call me in." I told John, trying to calm his nerves down. He nodded.
When John and I walked in the school building, we said goodbye then separated. I saw Cameron at my locker with Sara and went over to them.
"Hey guys." I greeted them.
"Jennette, I wanted to talk to you." Cameron said.
"I'll leave you guys alone. See you at lunch, Jennette." Sara said and hugged me, then walked away.
"See you!" I replied then looked at Cameron.
"I wanted to tell you I can't go on our date Saturday. Can we do it Friday instead?" Cameron asked.
"That would be perfect," I replied, "I wanted to apologize for acting the way I did when I found out you were blind. I'm really, really sorry. I don't know why you would forgive me, because I acted stupid about it."
"I forgive you because that's the Christian thing to do." he replied and smiled.
"Thank you, Cameron," I hugged him, "can you please pray for me? For one thing, my dad has been acting sort of weird lately. I only told Sara and you. Also, I applied for a job at McDonald's, so please pray that I get it. I have an interview with them on Thursday."
"I'll pray every time I think about you. I'm glad God brought you into my life, Jennette." Cameron replied and smiled, again.
"I'm glad God brought you into my life. If He didn't, I would've never found the truth about Jesus." I smiled, aware that he couldn't see me.

When John and I got home, we put our backpacks in our rooms and sat on the couch.
"So, how was school?" I asked John.
"It was good! I made two friends. How was school for you?" he replied.
"It was okay, I mean, it's school," I laughed, "and that's good, I'm glad you made friends. I told you you were likeable!"
John blushed.
"Do you have a job?" asked John.
"No, but I have an interview at McDonald's on Thursday. I think the grocery store down the street hires fourteen year olds to bag groceries, if you want a job yourself." I told him and playfully punched his arm.
"Yeah, I think I'd like that." he said. Just then I heard the door open and I knew it was dad. I walked to the door and saw dad closing it with a depressed look on his face.
"Dad, how was work?" I asked him.
"I've been meaning to tell you, but I just couldn't think of a good way to tell you." he replied. I made a confused face at him then took what he had in his hand and put it up.
"Come to the living room and you can tell John and me." I said. We walked to the living room and both sat on the couch.
"Last week my boss fired me. Every time I leave this house to go to work, I'm really being interviewed for a job. I'm sorry I didn't tell you, I didn't want to worry you." dad broke the news to us.
"How are you paying for groceries? If I knew that, I would not have asked you for that money to get that pizza. I thought you were acting strange, but I didn't think this would be the problem. I'm being interviewed for a job at McDonald's on Thursday, and I'll pay you back for the pizza if I get the job. I know you probably won't take it, but it's the least I could do." I insisted.
"I'm going to apply for a job at the grocery store, I could help pay taxes and groceries and stuff, depending on what I get paid." Why did John have to be so thoughtful?
"I don't want you kids paying for anything. I'm going to get a new job, and I will pay everything on my own." dad said. That's always how dad was. I got up and went to my room so I wouldn't blow up in frustration. A few minutes after I had been in my room, John came up and knocked on the door.
"Come in." I gave permission. John walked in.
"John, when - not if - when we get those jobs, we sneak money into dad's wallet. If he asks how it got there, just say, 'God Provides,' and leave it at that. You want to?" I had thought up that whole plan in less than ten minutes.
"How do you know we'll get the jobs?" John asked.
"God provides." I replied and we both grinned.
"I'm in!" John agreed.
