Chapter 12
When we got home, I showed John around the house.
"So, is there enough space for you?" I joked with John.
"Well, it could be bigger." he grinned. We both laughed.
"Your room is this way." I told him and lead him to the used to be guest room.
"It's big. Are you sure I shouldn't get a smaller room?" he asked, worried because he thought he was taking someone's room.
"This was the guest room, John, don't worry about it," I assured him, "besides, my dad is very wealthy. He could add another room to this house if he wanted to."
"Okay, good." John replied.
"Come on, let's go get a donut, then we can go to my room and get to know each other more." I said. We went to the kitchen and got two chocolate donuts and two glasses of milk, then went to my room and sat on my bed.
"Is it alright if I go first?" he asked.
"Yes." I replied, taking a bite of my donut.
"Okay," he started, "I'm in ninth grade, which you probably already knew, because I'm fourteen. My parents died in a car accident when I was eleven, so I've been to different foster homes in the past three years. My favorite color is red, for now, because it changes a lot. I like to play sports, and my favorite sport is baseball. I'm not likeable, so I never made friends with any of the other kids in the foster home. I don't know why, but people just don't like me. They always gossip about me. I hope that changes. I love dogs, and I had to give up my dog, Buddy, when my parents died. I hope you guys like dogs, because I really want one again. I play the piano, and a little bit of guitar. That's all I know to tell you."
"You're not likeable? That's impossible. Who wouldn't like you?" I said, trying to make John feel better.
"Well, thanks, but I don't think I'm likeable. Everyone always makes mean jokes about me, and no one wants to be my friend." he replied.
"I would kill to be your friend. But I don't have to kill, because you're my brother. Not by blood, but at heart, you're my brother. And my dad is your dad now, so don't hesitate to call him dad." I was trying to make him feel like we were his real family. I couldn't imagine how he felt. His parents were gone, and he had no friends. I felt sorry for the kid.
"Thanks for trying to make me feel better. I think I'll get used to being your brother fast." John said and hugged me.
"I don't know if it'll make you feel any better, but I lost my mom to cancer when I was twelve. It hurt, bad, and it still does, but God has helped me through it, even when I didn't want to believe He was real. He'll help you through it, too." I replied and ruffled his hair.
"You're a Christian? God really is good, I was praying to be adopted into a family that loved Jesus just as much as I did!" John said and hugged me, again. Wow. Now all I had to do was be a witness to my dad.
After we gave John the gifts (such as clothes, video games, etc.) we bought him, and after John had settled down in his room playing a video game, I decided to talk to dad about being a Christian. We sat down in the living room with cups of coffee.
"Dad, what would you think if I told you John and I were Christians?" I asked in a calm matter.
"I'd kick you both out of the house," he replied, "I'm kidding. If both of my children were Christians, then I would become one too. If young teens can believe in God, then why can't a grown man?"
"John and I are Christians. I became a Christian earlier today, and John told me he was one." I told him.
"That is wonderful. Tomorrow I am going to that Church Sara and her family go to, and I am asking the Pastor to help me get saved." he said. I was too happy to speak. I smiled and hugged dad.
"Well, why don't we order pizza for supper?" dad asked.
"That would be great. Pepperoni?" I replied.
"Anything you and John want." he said.
"Good, because John loves pepperoni pizza." I said sarcastically, yet seriously. John walked in the living room, and apparently he had heard what I said.
"I never said that." he said and grinned, then joined us on the couch.
"Don't tell him that!" I joked. We laughed, then dad ordered pizza. I guess tonight was going to be family night, to welcome our new family member.
