Hayden's POV:
Evan looks at me seriously, "What do you call a big pile of cats?"
Using my fork to pick up a small piece of pie, I sigh. "What?"
Evan honestly sucked at jokes. But it made him happy, so I listened and laughed a bit.
"A meow-ntain." He watches my face for a reaction as he struggles to keep his laughter in. I let a small giggle escape my lips and Evan finally lets his out.
Many heads turn at the sound of his obnoxious laughter but turn back to their food. "Very funny."
He smiles widely, "I know." I take a sip of my coke and Evan asks, "How was school?"
"Eh. It's school, Ev. Not all that fun." I reply, checking the time on my phone - 2:53. Meaning school has been out for 23 minutes.
He shrugs, "Well, guess what?"
"You finally got a girlfriend?" I gasp, teasingly.
He pouts as he takes a bite of pie, "No. I did not. But I got something better."
"Not surprised." I grin.
He huffs, "Aren't you going to ask what it is?"
"Okay, Evan. What is it?"
"I got into college."
A shriek of excitement leaves my lips, "Oh my fuck! Which one?"
"Chandler Community College." He grins in excitement.
"That's amazing, Evan! I'm so proud of you! And it isn't far from home so you can still live with us. This is great! Does mom know?"
"No, I haven't told her yet."
"Well, let's go tell her."
*At Home*
"Mom, Evan has good news." I announce, walking through the front door.
"And what's that?" She asks, Eric wrapping his arms around her waist.
Evan stands next to me and places his arm around my shoulders. "I, um, got into Chandler Community College." He smiles, obviously proud.
My mom's smile falls. "Chandler Community College?"
"Yeah, isn't it great?" I ask.
"Community College." She repeats to herself.
"Is there something wrong?" Evan asks, his smile falling.
"You got into a Community College." She lets out an unamused laugh. "A Community fucking College, Evan. What's wrong with you? You couldn't have gotten into a better college? For fuck's sake! We still have to have a reputation here! Our family is supposed to get the best, of the best. Not a Community College!" She says, angrily.
Evan lets out a shaky breath, and I cut in. "Hold up, mom. Who fucking cares about god damn reputations? Nobody! God, Evan got into college and you're worried which college! All college's are the fucking same, except for the name and price. He got in without the help of your money, and he's proud. Fuck, I'm proud! Can you get over yourself and your reputation and be happy for him?"
I was tired of this. I was tired of her and criticizing everything we did.
Before I know it, I feel a painful sting on my right cheek. My mom steps back, obviously angry.
"Don't you fucking touch her." Evan growls, "She did nothing wrong! You have no right to hit her for telling you the truth. Whatever I do is never good enough for you."
She glares at Evan, "I'll deal with you later. But you, Hayden, do not speak to your mother that way! It is very disrespectful."
Tears well up in my eyes, "We listen to you fucking criticize us every day, and stick through it. But when we decide to call you out on it, it's disrespect. Great fucking logic, mom." I hiss.
"Hayden." Eric steps in, his tone threatening.
"Yeah, whatever. Fuck you, both." I roll my eyes, grabbing Evan's arm and pulling him up the stairs. We both walk into my room, and close the door. "I fucking hate her, I swear."
"Don't say that, Denny. She's still our mom." He replies, softly.
"So what? She doesn't act like it! All she does is criticize everything we do! And she thinks reputation is everything! Also, she spends all her time fucking Eric!"
Evan sighs, "Don't worry about it. Just ignore her."
"Easier said then done."
I don't know how, but last night's talking with Evan made the night go by so much faster. And before I knew it, my alarm was going off and then I was out the door for school.
Lunch went by slower then ever. I met a new friend named Jasmine in Language Arts. She invited me to sit with her and her friends during lunch. She seemed nice enough, and I had no one else to sit with, so I agreed.
I take a bite of my pizza and look around the cafeteria. Familiar blue eyes lock with mine, and I turn away quickly. His words echo through my mind, "I don't know. That's for you to find out. Listen around, Hayden."
I couldn't help but feel a little curious on what his name was. Then, I decide to listen in on Jasmine's conversation.
"God, Marlene! Did you hear what Zayn Malik's group did?"
"No, what?"
"Wait, wait. Who's Zayn Malik's group?" I interject.
"Oh. Well, there's Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson, Harry Styles, Liam Payne, and Niall Horan."
I raise an eyebrow and turn towards the table he was sat at, only to see he wasn't there anymore.
"Who're they?"
"Zayn Malik, and Niall Horan." Marlene sighs in admiration.
"Which one's which?"
"Zayn Malik's the one with the shaggier and darker hair, Niall Horan is the one with blonde hair."
I couldn't deny they were attractive. "I'm heading to class."
I throw away my food and walk down the hall towards science. Feeling a hand on my arm, I turn to see him. "Why won't you just tell me your name?"
"I don't know." He replies, shrugging.
"Well, I know you aren't Zayn or Niall."
"Good job. So, am I Harry, Louis, or Liam?" He smirks.
