Bleeding tears
They had met on a rainy night. She hid in the stables seeking shelter from the rain unable to find her way back inside, lost in the dark. He lit up the way to her heart. In the rain they had fallen in love, they're bodies one and their souls tied. Fate. Every moment they spent together butterflies erupted in both of their stomachs and their hearts would fill with warmth. As a noble woman, she often saw him working around her house, he was her dream even though he was the furthest thing from a prince. Their love was like a fairy tale, a dream that brought joy to each of them. But in reality fairy tales and happy endings do not exist, dreams are just a figment of our imaginations.
"Adeline, Meet William Burland, the most wealthy and well known man in all of England and the man whom you will be betrothed to"
At those words, hell broke loose. Her voice yearned to scream and her legs yearned to run away, to her happiness. But she was just a woman, defying orders would go against her nature as such. Each piece of her heart shattered. All hopes of her happy ending disappeared.
But when a person cares for someone deeply, they are willing to do anything to save their love, even if it the law did not support them. She snuck out every night to see him, Joseph Farthing, even after her marriage. He was the only bright light in her life, but candles never stay alight forever they eventually burn out.
It was forbidden to love another man's wife, but the feelings they held for each other were too strong. They thought nothing could tear them apart, but they were wrong. Tears slipped ran down her rosy cheeks and her heart clenched at the sight of Joseph's limp body hanging from the thick rope. He was found guilty, a ranch hand against the Burland family? He didn't stand a chance.
As prominent socialites the Burland family had a reputation to protect. With Joseph's last breath all of Adeline's happiness was gone.
Her dark brown hair cascaded down her shoulders as she ran the brush through her thick curls. She pulled her hair up, twisting it around and securing it under an ornate lace bonnet. A layered corset dress hugged her petite figure and flowed down over her heavy hoop skirt. Adeline Burland, London's most wealthy woman, the lady every man swooned over and the lady every woman envied.
She steadily ran the blade across her pale wrist letting another crimson trail decorate it. As the liquid trickled down her hand she felt alive, she felt as if her wounds were letting her worries seep through them and vanish into the air. She surrounded herself in her own world of despair, letting the memories of him pour into her mind once again.
Adeline slipped her hands into her satin gloves, concealing all signs her pain which lay beneath the decorated cloth. A well-practiced smile graced her lips and her head was held high as she descended the flight of steps. In front of her was a spacious room filled with wealthy elegantly dressed men and women. She politely greeted the guests that scattered the room with her husband by her side. She was his trophy, a sign of his wealth. She weaved her way through the swarm of people in the room lit by a crystal chandelier. She made her way to a small enclosed room and stared at her reflection through the large antique mirror.
She gazed at the unsightly person before her. The girl who caused the death of an innocent man, a murderer. She scrutinized each detail of her appearance for the last time.
Covering her features with a cloak she stealthily made her way out of the mansion, the same way she had snuck out to meet her lover so often in the past. She walked along the snow covered pavement in the blanket of night towards the dark isolated area once filled with crowds celebrating the death of an adulterer. Adeline walked towards the gallows. Where he took his last breath. Tears fell down her face and words of apology spilled out of her mouth, growing louder with the sounds of emerging rain. The place where all of Adeline's joy disappeared.
The image of his lifeless corpse flashed in front of her.She stood close to thick rope and spoke whatever words flew into her mind. Each word she spoke was nothing but the truth. After three painful years of grieving, she poured her heart out.
"Joseph Farthing. I, Adeline Marigold, was and still am hopelessly in love with you. Nothing ever got the thought of you out of my head your face dead and alive haunt me in my dreams and every second I spend awakd, even throughout these three long years, you are on my mind. Your eyes, your smile and your loving nature, everything about you was perfect and a pathetic girl like me never deserved you. I deserve to burn in hell for leading you to your death. I lost everything. I would wonder each and every day why am I still standing here alive while you are up there regretting the decision of ever coming near me. It should have been me. I tried staying alive and well for your sake and out of fear that I will meet you in the afterlife, but there only a small amount of hurt a creature like me can take on this earth without you. I hope you can forgive me."
She sobbed after spilling the contents of her broken heart while the sky poured down on her. She walked up to the platform, imagining what he would have seen in his last moments. She placed her head into the rope
'I love you Joseph'
She let out her last breath. She covered herself in an eternal blanket of darkness with hopes of reuniting with her other half. She hung herself in the gallows for the crime of letting Joseph die alone.
Slowly the rain washed her away.
