The Rains of Castamere
Joanna felt envious of the wedding, it was everything shed hoped to have when she arrived in Winterfell and set eyes on Robb for the first time. A wedding surrounded by friends and family with no arguments and secrecy carried and no wars that relied on the relationship choices that she made. The North was the complete opposite of south as back home theyd have been married in the Sept of Balor and worshipping the realm. Her first change in belief came from her own wedding when Robb explained to her why they worship the old gods and the Weirwood trees.
She stood with Robb who felt troubled and hoped to gods that Walder Frey wouldn't notice his sisters absence. Edmure looked like a nervous wreck and the Blackfish and her couldn't find to help but find his overly dramatic antics quite hilarious. The man had to remind himself to breathe in and out as Walder walked down the aisle with Roslyn at arm. Her face was covered with a white veil – which only spiked his nerves into what his bride would look like.
From across the aisle she could see Roose Bolton looking back to them with an unreadable facial expression before respectfully nodding his head to the king. Walder passed the young couple as he too stared at them, smirking hoping that Robb was admiring the petite figure he was walking down hoping to fuel jealousy in Joanna.
As Roslyn stood in front of her soon to be husband, the veil was lifted. Edmures tense body language relaxed when he finally saw her face. Roslyn stared back to her sisters when Joanna finally met her face. She was young and beautiful, more than what they anticipated her to be before kneeling on her knees as she softly spoke, "Lord Edmure, I hope I'm not a disappointment to you."
Edmure breathed a sigh of relief as he took her hand "You're a delight to me, my lady." He answered
"That dog. "The Blackfish chuckled as Joanna looked content at the pair as she felt Robbs pinky link with hers behind their backs. With all the doubt and trouble her and Robbs secret relations had she wouldnt change it for a thing. If she could – she'd take anything to remarry him that night in the woods again.
Their feelings never wavered or changed since that night as yes, they may argue but their bond only grew stronger and stronger by the day. Joanna looked to Robb who seemed to be enjoying the ceremony, hoping that his attention wasnt festered on Roslyn. It seemed childish but she felt a pang of jealousy brewing inside her at the sight of the beautiful girl.
Joanna's body wasn't what it used to. Her back was littered with scars and legs in bruises. She'd become so pale from lack of sun in the North and her hair was constantly tied back. Imagining how pleased Robb would be to marry the girl. Innocent and pure with a body that hasn't been dragged through slopes of mud. She remembered the snickers of Theon when Catelyn couldnt answer Robbs question on whether or not she was beautiful.
If he'd known she was beautiful, would he have taken her as his bride instead?
"Don't get any ideas. You're not getting rid of me that quickly." Robb teased her. She tried hiding her smile as Robb only brought her closer as their shoulders touched trying not to fester too much attention on themselves.
"Too bad, because I've had my eye on the old man at the back sleeping with his eyes open. He's a real catch y'know?" She sarcastically laughed back
"Oh, and what does he have that I don't?" Robb whispered
"For one he doesn't look like much of a talker, meaning no war tales for me before I sleep."
"Please, you love my stories, but not as much as you love my handsome co-"She shushed him as they proceeded to watch the events unfold. Coughing at her laughs begging to escape as Robb looked back pleased to see his beautiful wife struggling to hold in her laugh.
Seated at their table Robb watched as the celebrations unfold with Joanna at ease next to him. The violins were tuned as Walder was seated on his high chair at the main table overlooking his guests. For the first time Robb noticed how relaxed and calm his men were, probably allowing themselves to enjoy the night while they still could before continuing the war when the sun would rise again.
Due to her lack of sleep Joanna could only stay up for a certain amount of hours before being struck with sleep by nightfall. Joanna politely yawned as she noticed that Catelyn was seated next to Roose Bolton. Seemed like an odd pair although the only men shed ever seen him with was The Karstarks and his own men.
"You look miserable love." Robb kissed the side of her head as he traced the palm of her hand to which she hit his chest
"Thank you. That's just what every wife wants to hear. This will be the reason I remarry the grandfather with the lazy eye whos pissing his pants up there." She pointed to an old man boating his laughter as he was busy wetting his pants. Robb playfully smirked as his free hand poked the side of her hips – to which she was ticklish off
"Ah, with a strong belly like that and a beard reaching his knees I could see why you would want him. You've always had an eye for older man." He approved of the man before taking another sip of wine. Joanna gasped as she drastically held her hand
"Oh no, how did you know?" she continued "I tried so hard to hid it from you but yes, there's just something about drunk men pissing themselves that does something to me." She played along to. "Please, you're only a few months older than Robb."
"Still makes me your elder." He winked as she lifted her arm to strike him as he caught her fist in the palm of his hand, bringing her chair closer to him as their faces were inches away from one another.
"It's treason to hit your king." He said
"I'll take my chances. I've always been a bit of a rebel." She answered back as Robb kissed her hand. She quickly drew her hand back as she felt her cheeks become red as a rose wanting to hide them as Robb took hold of her travelling hands.
"Don't hide them, I like seeing you be flustered around me. Means I'm doing my job right, don't you think?" He complimented her. Robb raised his eyebrow indulging in their banter. She quickly glanced down in reference to her stomach as cockily smirked back to her
"What can I say, I know how to please my wife."
"Your grace!" Lord Frey called out The septon has prayed his prayers, some words were said and Lord Edmure has wrapped my daughter in a cloak. He spoke with a chorus of laughter followed his words But they are not yet man and wife. "A sword needs a sheath and a wedding needs a bedding! What does my sire say?" More laughter rumbled from the men in the room. Joanna turned her head to see Shae rolling her eyes and she gulped more wine clearly just as disgusted by the Frey men as her.
Cups pounded on the table as wine was spilt everywhere like a storm, the men chanted in unisons "TO BED! TO BED! TO BED!"
"If you think the time is right, Lord Walder, by all means, let us bed them." Robb answered as he approached the head table. Joanna didnt know much of Northern wedding traditions but gathering from the weddings she went to with Robert she can only assume whats to come would not be pleasant to her eyes.
She watched as Roslyn be lifted into the air and carried off by the Freys. Her wedding gown stripped from her body as Edmure was surrounded by men and women carrying them away. Robb sat back down as he clapped along with the rest. Under the table Joannas boot kicked his leg as he stoped
"What?!" He whined forgetting that her kicks were lethal
"Don't clap for them." She addressed
"It's tradition love besides if not this there are many different ways of consummating ones wedding." He smiled back to her. In very few moments she forgot how young her and Robb war and the few moments it did come to mind she loved him even more for seeing that tiny northern boy peak through.
"And you'd be the expert, wouldn't you?"
"Boy or girl?" Robb curiously asked her, a warm smile spreading across both of their faces to what their future might entail with the baby she had inside of her
"I don't know. I haven't even given it much thought. I didn't even see myself ever marrying, let alone have a child." She quietly answered as she sat closet to him. Her fingers playing with the curls in his hair
"You must be the first girl I've ever met to not think of a husband or children." He laughed as he remembered how Sansa would have the names she wanted to give her children alphabetically memorized in her head.
"Well I do have one idea should it be a boy."
"Oh, do you?" He questioned Isnt it supposed to be me who names our son, unless you have something to say to me. Robb replied. Joanna sat back as played with strand of her hair before looking back to him
"Yes. I want to name him Eddard." Robb couldn't believe his ears. He felt his heart swell more and more at the choosing of the name. So much weight carried that name. She couldve have chosen any name but she chose the name of his father. Everyday Joanna came up with more and more reasons to love her. His love for her was running like a never ending up. There was no end to how much he cherished every fibre in her body.
"Gods, I love you Joanna." He whispered as Joanna pecked his lips before Lord Walder caught her.
"I love you too. Passionately and infinitely." Joanna edged forward to kiss him but then time stood still and her stomach turned. She glanced to the back and saw the doors closing and two of Frey men stand guard. The tune of the violins changed to a song she was all too familiar with. She pulled back to turn and see that Shae was nowhere to be seen. A look of concern and fear struck her face as Robb shared the same emotion
Joanna he asked with terror. She whipped her head back to see Catelyn look back at her with terror in her face. Her eyes followed Catelyns when she finally noticed Roose Boltons padded arm. Panic coursed through her veins as she looked to Walder Frey
The Rains of Castamere.
"Your grace!" Lord Frey raised his hand, silencing the music. Robb could see his wifes terror as he stood up. "I fear I've been remiss with my duties." Walder spoke. Joannas eyes scanned the room seeing how empty it became. Shae and her army nowhere to be seen and Catelyn with tears in her eyes next to Roose Bolton.
"I've given you meat, wine and music but I haven't shown you the hospitality you deserve." His stare cold as ice but it looked all too familiar. It carried a sadistic smirk – one shared by Joffrey. "My king has married and I owe my new queen a wedding gift!" Lord Frey announced as the music slowly started to play in the background. Catelyn realised they were in grave danger as she ripped her arm away from Roose Bolton and called to them, "Robb!"
Robb and Joanna looked to one another as they removed the daggers they hid in each ones booths. The pair knew with Joanna negotiating new terms regarding Arya that weapons would be necessary to have at all times. There were too many instances in their lives where they came in handy, this being one of them. Pushing the table off them, without second thought Joanna turned around as she sprinted to punch one of the Frey men as the daggers cut through his eyes as he screamed of pain. Robb covering her left as his knee cracked the rib on the second soldier as his neck was cut open by Robbs blade.
Joanna looked upward to see the musicians put away their weapons and replaced them with crossbrows.
"Fuck." She muttered.
