Dan
"Why?", she asked.
I knew I couldn't play dumb this time, I just sighed in response because I knew I couldn't run away from the answer.
"Can we sit over coffee and discuss this?", I asked.
"That'll be okay. Let's go to the cafe down the lane.", Meg suggested.
I was soaking and so was Meg by the time we reached the cafe, a slight drizzle had started when we were on the way and we had no other option but to walk.
"A glass of water for me and a cup of cappuccino for the lady sitting with me, please.", I politely requested the waiter.
"Go on?", Meg said with curiously written on her features.
"Well, what I'm about to tell you had taken place four years ago, when I had been seeing this girl I really liked." I continued "Do you remember Jade from back in middle school?"
"I do, weren't you dating her back then?", she asked me.
"Yes, both of us were in love. I used to quote Shakespeare for her, I even tried making a card, I was not being myself and I enjoyed that. I loved her. I could do it to see her smile."
Meg looked at me as I stared out of the window.
"What went wrong?", she asked. Everyone had known of our relationship for it was one of the biggest gossips in school and tons of rumours spread like wildfire. My heart aches to this day at that faint memory and all that had gone wrong, sometimes I wish she would've let me explain. We might've still been together if she would've.
"It was going to be a year of our togetherness, and naturally, I saw this as a big reason to celebrate. I had called all of you up, remember? That was probably the first time someone had made Joe break out of his shell and paint. I had been counting down to the final day, I wanted to surprise her. I wanted to make her feel loved and tell her that she's not alone. I always knew that she had some sort of an idea of what I was going to do, what I was going to present her with."
Her lips pursed together, maybe she could see a connection of what I am telling her with what she wanted to know.
"You guys split about two weeks after your one year anniversary.", she stated flatly.
I looked at her and resumed, "She never received my surprise. She received a far bigger surprise than what I had planned for her. About six to five days before our anniversary, she started receiving anonymous notes in school. She shrugged it off like it was nothing, of course. She thought it was me and this was my way of giving her her surprise, she thought I had created something like a jigsaw puzzle for her. But guess what? I hadn't. These kind of ideas never popped into my head, it could never be me. The notes never really said anything directly, but it directed her towards things which were untrue and stories which were nothing but made up. Two days before our anniversary, she received yet another letter and by then, she could make out it wasn't me. But she never told me of them, she never told me of the notes she used to discover in her locker and seats every morning. Now that I've grown older, I know that we couldn't have lasted very long because our relationship lacked trust. The letter she had received had photographs attached to it. And they were mine, I won't deny. It was of me kissing my ex girlfriends."
She flashed me a look and I gave her a defensive look.
"You were always a player."
"Became a better one once she left me."
"Why did she? What was it?" And I continued.
I could see a dark look clouded over her face once I had finished with whatever I had to say. The slight drizzle had turned into a heavy downpour by the time I had finished. She slowly drifted her gaze from the window to me, her eyes were watery as if she'd been crying all this while.
Her voice was broken and husky by now, she still managed to say my name with her trembling lips, "Da-aan? I ha-ave to s-ay som-ething."
"Meg, don't cry, it's okay. It's alright.", I assured her of something unknown. She took a few moments to calm down and after blowing her nose for a while she finally said something I had never wanted to hear.
"I did it."
"What?"
"I said I did it."
