Chapter 3
Sunny, now officially called Phoenix, was looking at other history books to try and learn more about Captain Ghostly and Captain MottlePaw. Much to her dismay, she wasn't able to find much. She shook her head and walked out of the cave to the outdoor. The family was planning to relocate to a newer home closer to the hospital so it would be easier to visit Patches.
Phoenix sighed and laid down in the grass. She wanted to be with her brother and play, but it hurt even more considering he has always had something wrong, forcing him to stay inside where it was safer and where he could be monitored. Phoenix walked back inside and laid down on the nest. The entire nest was covered in papers and leather books due to the excessive research.
A loud siren of a firetruck drove past, causing Phoenix to look up. She shrugged, then opened another book. It was about dragons' blood and its curses.
Dragon's blood is unique, once, a long time ago, dragons ruled the land. The last known dragon was killed by Captain Ghostly, which we believe the blood caused him to go insane, leading to his eventual death. It has been known to be a powerful substance, when turned into a gas, it becomes highly toxic, while if it remains a liquid, it stays safe. Some reports from Captain Ghostly's diary have led us to believe that if the blood gets on the fur or skin, it'll cause insufferable pain in the shoulders. Another thing is that we have found that dragon's blood, despite it being rare, is highly flammable.
Phoenix quit reading, knowing there wasn't going to be much else on Captain Ghostly or Captain MottlePaw.
She got up and bounced around the main cave. Phoenix was impatient to visit her brother again. "Calm down." Her father hissed. Phoenix nodded, and stopped, waiting for something to come up to give her something to do. "How about we all go visit Patches?" Her mother suggested. Phoenix excitedly nodded. "Yeah!" She nodded. "We'll go tomorrow, get some sleep."
Phoenix listened to her father and ran into her room, flopping onto her nest to sleep. Despite having all day, she couldn't help but feel impatient. She still had too much energy and had no way of removing it. As any normal cat would do, Phoenix grabbed a book and started reading.
It was the book she was reading with her brother.
The more she read, the more invested she got, and when she put the book down, her thoughts mostly consisted of "I want to meet Captain Ghostly, he sounds so cool! Captain MottlePaw too!" which certainly wasn't helping her sleep.
She stared at the ceiling, then heard the sound of a glass bottle being dropped against the ground. Her ears could barely pick up the splatter as she heard her mother scream. A scream of grief, a scream of pain. Phoenix shot up and ran out, wondering what had happened, or if she'll ever know. "What's going on?"
