Day ??: Starlight
Garroth froze, and Laurence watched his look of pure joy fade from his face. "W-What?" He stuttered, taking a step closer and used his shadow to block the sun from hitting Laurence's face.
"I . . . can't, Garroth." Laurence was shaking violently, his heart pounding harder than ever before. "I-It's too much. I can't handle it." He looked at his hands, sweaty and callused from hard work, and now shaking to the point that Laurence thought it would never stop. "I've never known this place. Escaping is amazing in theory, but I just didn't put together how big the world is. I thought this would make me happy, feel like I was on top of the world."
Garroth stood silently, shocked as he looked down at Laurence with his vibrant blue eyes, now seeming to dull with every word Laurence spoke.
"The truth is . . . I've never felt so small."
Garroth stood for a few more moments, his eyes scanning the world around him before returning his gaze to Laurence. "I-I don't know what to say." He muttered. His voice wasn't angry, but confused and frustrated. He ran his hand through his golden hair, becoming more panicked. "Seriously Laurence! How am I supposed to respond to that?" He turned around in a circle as if to get a better look at the field. "We worked so hard for this! What are you going to do? Crawl back into that hell hole that you came from?" Tears began to trickle down his cheeks, his voice cracking. "You wants leave me for that place? After all we have been through?"
Laurence knew that this would happen, but he still winced at Garroth's words. "I don't know what to tell you. I have no idea how the world works, and I'll be like an outcast anywhere I go. I would be happy to just live in these tunnels forever, if it means being with you."
"Well I wouldn't!" Garroth snapped. "You have never thought of anyone but yourself. Can you think of me for once? Think about how this effects me? I was taken forcefully out of society, and put into a prison. Now I've found someone I truly care for and want to be with, but they refuse to try and make a better living for themselves."
Laurence's eyes widened. "Excuse me?" He muttered. "Think of you for once? Ever since you arrived in that 'Hell Hole' all I've ever thought about was you!" Laurence gripped the ground and pulled himself further out on his hands and knees. "All I could think about was how I wasn't alone, you changed everything! You gave me hope that I never had before. I had something to fight for!" Laurence became lost in his own emotions, and pulled himself further out, not even realizing that he had gotten out of the tunnel.
The sun began to set behind them, but the boys didn't take notice. A dark shade of scarlet fell over the sky, casting a rosy glow across the fields.
"What did you do with that hope? Hm? Come this far only to drop to your knees and give up at the one chance we have at freedom?" Garroth challenged.
Laurence straightedges up, tightening his fists. His eyes watered, blurring his vision, but he wiped them away. "No you idiot! I gave you a chance at freedom! You were the one thing that kept me happy, kept me alive and going. I knew adjusting to the outside would be something I may never be able to do, yet I knew you deserved to live a normal life!" He let a tear roll down his cheek. "I did it because I'm in love with you!"
Garroth looked at him as the darkness fell over them. Stars began to shine as the dim light disappeared over the hills. All was silent except for a few crickets chirping in the distance, and the breeze that ruffled the stalks of wheat.
Laurence wiped his tears away, and looked at Garroth with such sorrow, that no man could ever describe it.
Garroth didn't respond to Laurence for a while, only looking at him with a look of thoughtfulness, and sadness. He suddenly looked up at the stars, finally beginning to speak. "Look up, Laurence." He whispered.
Laurence didn't know what else to do, so he obeyed, looking up at the shining specks that lit up the night sky. He was in awe. "T-They're breathtaking." He whispered, not really knowing what else to say.
Garroth looked back down at him, Laurence could practically feel his heartbeat rumbling the ground. "You belong out here, with me. Do you know why?"
Laurence looked down at his hands, seeing how they had begun to shake violently again. "No, why?" He asked softly.
"Because you're skin is dotted with stars, each freckle placed with such wonderful elegance that it couldn't have been an accident." He brushed his hand over Laurence's cheek, cupping it gently to lift Laurence's gaze up to him. "The stars above us, they are a sign that you belong. Each thing out here, it resembles either something from your memory as a young child in the real world, or in the room. Everything is just as familiar as it is foreign."
Laurence looked at Garroth, his eyes soft. "You really think I can do this?" He whispered, looking up once more. "You think that I belong here?"
Garroth pulled Laurence in for a tight hug. "Of course I do. I don't think I could go on without you, and I don't think you could go on without me. We need each other Laurence. I barged into your life and threw everything upside down, I messed up everything, but it a way, that made you into someone who was able to help us live, help us escape." He leaned down to press his lips into Laurence's they stood a moment, sharing a gentle kiss.
"I owe my life to you. No way could I leave that behind."
Laurence pulled Garroth down once again, kissing the once person that he loved in his life.
The shaking stopped.
