Chapter Five: "She's Not Yours, She Never Was."
Jughead's POV
After Betty and I talked that night I realized something, Betty didn't even have to tell me about her kiss with Archie. Afterall we were broken up when it happened, I had no right to be mad about it. But she chose to tell me because she wanted to be honest with me. She thought that was why the Black Hood targeted her. But I wasn't convinced that was the real reason. After all, this town is full of liars. He can't go after all of them. That morning I waited till she woke up and kissed her goodbye as Toni and Cheryl walked in the front door.
"I'll bring your work home, Betty, don't worry you really aren't missing anything," I assured her as I kissed her one last time.
"Jug" Betty whispered pulling me back. "I love you. " She said with a smile as I kissed the top of her head.
"I'll never stop loving you, Betty Cooper." I said back to her as I walked towards the front door.
"You two are too cute, don't worry Choni has babysitting covered. We're experts." Cheryl said as he closed the door behind me. The second I got to school Sweet Pea walked up to me.
"Jug...you might have a problem on your hands." He said as the rest of the Serpents approached me.
"You mean besides my injured lady." I sighed, I kept having flashbacks to that night. I couldn't shake the feeling that that was only a warning from the Black Hood. He wanted Betty for some reason. And I was going to find out exactly what that was. After Archie and I had a little talk. "Speaking of problems....one approaches. " I said as Archie walked up to me.
"Wait you know?" Fangz said blowing their cover. I looked at him confused as Sweet Pea shook his head.
"This is why I do the talking." He said back to Fangz as he dragged him into one of the classrooms. What the hell has been going on around here? I thought to myself as Archie walked up to me.
"Jug...we gotta talk. I heard that the Serpents gave Betty a jacket the other day." He sighed as he looked at me.
"Uh well no actually I did. I mean if you want the full play by play, we threw her a welcome home party. Cheryl and Toni handed me the jacket and I put it on my girlfriend. Then we proceeded to make out. Do you want me to continue with what happened at my trailer after or do you get it? She's a member now and since my dad stepped down, I'm the king of the Serpents which makes Betty the queen." I smirked to myself thinking about how her face lit up when I put the jacket on her.
"Jug, this is a horrible idea. Why would you want to get Betty involved in this stuff? Now that the ghoulies are back and the Black Hood just attacked her. You want her front and center in all of this. Are you even thinking about her well being? Are you trying to get her killed?" Archie started to raise his voice.
"Well, Archie for one Betty Cooper is my girlfriend. So I want her to be involved in all parts of my life. Like I am very involved in hers, you always seem to forget the fact that she and I are dating. Also yes the Ghoulies are back and that is something I wanted to keep her out of. But she wouldn't let me. She figured out exactly how girls get into the Serpents and the dance they have to do and she did it. You remember at my father's Serpent retirement party. You were there, she looked good, didn't she? In that black lingerie...you know I yelled at her for doing that. For wanting her to be involved in my world. This girl risked everything for me..her reputation and her life. So I gave her that jacket because there is no one more deserving than Betty to be queen. But to answer your question Arch...yes I do want her front and center. Betty wants it too. So for once put your feelings aside and respect her decisions. I want you to know one thing though Andrews, I will risk my life for hers. It will be a cold day in hell before that girl's blood is on my hands again." I said as the bell rang.
"Jug I..." Archie stuttered.
"Also stop calling her Arch, you weren't there when she needed you. You never are. You finally had a chance Arch. To prove yourself to her, like she tried to do for you so many years. You never noticed her and she was there for you, more than you could ever be there for her. The night of the attack you had a choice to return that favor. But where were you Arch? I mean you live next door you had to have heard her scream right?" I said as I turned to walk away.
"Jug! You're not looking out for your girlfriend! She's from the North Side! She's..she's not.." He stopped himself. But I knew what he was going to say.
"She's not one of us? Wow Arch...nice one. She's not a low life South Sider like me. Well, you're wrong. She's got South Side blood from her mother. But thanks for trying to teach me about my girlfriend. Arch..I'm starting to get the feeling that, that kiss meant more to you than it did to Betty." I said calling him out. "Yes, of course, Betty told me Arch, you should probably tell your girlfriend too. Unless you have something to hide? But how could you? I mean Betty...she's not yours, she never was Arch." I said as I turned around and walked into class before he could respond.
"What kiss?" I heard Veronica scream at him as I slammed the door behind me. That was for Betty.
