Chapter Fifty-Five: "Taking Sides"
Betty's POV
"Betty! Betty! Turn her on her side! Turn her on her side!" Veronica screamed as she ran into the bar. "She's having another seizure." Veronica instantly regretted the words as they fell out of her mouth. V was the only one I had told about them. While Jug and I were broken up and when Noah wasn't around. I went back to my house on the north side. My mom, Polly and the rest of the "funny farm" we're at the house next door. They had moved their weird cult to Riverdale and recruited my mom. I walked out onto the deck and saw them holding Polly's babies over the fire. It triggered a hallucination and all of a sudden I came to with Veronica standing over me. No recollection of what happened until she told me. Now here I was in the middle of another one, Jughead was probably terrified out of his mind. I mean I am.
"Another one? Did you say she's had one before!" Jug screamed. I was about to come too after one final jolt of body movement. Veronica instructed Jughead to put his hand under my head so I didn't smack it on the floor when I came to. He did what she said without debate. Noah, on the other hand, was screaming his head off. I could feel the guilt radiating off him as I came too. "Betty?" Jughead said as my breathing steadied and his face came into my vision.
"I'm...uh..I'm sorry." I shook off the embarrassment as I ran my hand over my face. "Can I have a tissue. My nose is bleeding." I stuttered as everyone looked at me.
"Here...here..let's get you up." Jug said as he wrapped his arms around me and pulled me up off the ground. I wasn't steady yet so I collapsed into him.
"Sorry...sorry..." I repeated as Jug held me.
"Never say sorry to me again. We have to get you to a doctor Betty. As for you Ghoulies this alliance is done. I don't care what happens to any of you. In fact, I'll make it my personal business to end this gang....and put you all behind bars. Noah, you come any closer to Betty and you go first. That's a promise." He said as he helped walk me out of the bar. Archie and the rest of the Serpents were standing outside.
"Jug...really I'm fine." I said as the rest of the Serpents gathered around us.
"Betty...you are not fine. In fact, you are so far from fine I feel so horrible for leaving you alone this long. You and I are going to have a long talk about all of this. After you see a neurologist. This can't keep happening Betty." Jug scolded me. I nodded biting my lip in agreement. Something was off with me. I just hadn't been myself lately and it was scaring the hell out of Jughead.
"Betty...I'm so...I never thought." Noah stuttered following us out into the bar parking lot.
"You..you never thought. That's the problem...No..ah." My voice was still shaking from the seizure aftermath. "I don't know what was in those pills or if my convulsions are related. But I can tell you one thing...I have to stop speaking to you. The Ghoulies and the Serpents can't coexist. I should've known...we all should've known. Whatever your gang is planning...we'll be one step ahead." I said as I turned towards Jug. My knees started to buckle, my nose was bleeding. Something was seriously wrong with me and it was Noah's fault.
"Stay the hell away from her...all of you." Jug said as he pulled out his switchblade. It's not an order it's a threat." He said as he walked me back towards the bikes. Noah shook his head in frustration.
"You're making a mistake Betty. You picked a losing team." He yelled as they headed back into the bar. I remember attempting to get on the back of Jug's bike, which quickly led to another blackout. I woke in the hospital apparently from what my phone read over a day later.
"Jug?" I freaked as I sprung up from the bed.
"Betts it's okay I'm right here." His calm voice really helped stop the anxiety attack I was heading for.
"What happened?" I asked.
"Another blackout no seizure this time. But I know what's causing them." Jug said as he pointed to the IV in my arm. "Thank god we caught it fast enough too. The pills you took were laced with poison...in fact, half the Ghoulies stash is. I don't know who's responsible...them or Hiram. But we got you the antidote in time. You have to stay here the week for the IV treatment though. I'm not leaving your side. Not for a second. It's you and me against the world baby." Jug said as he squeezed my hand.
"Jughead Jones I love you. " I whispered as he laid his head on my lap.
"Betty Cooper...I'll always love you." He said back as he stared up at me.
"How did we get here Jug?" I sighed, tears trickling down my face. "Where did it all go wrong? One second I'm a River Vixen, the next my father is the most wanted man in the state. My mother joins a cult, I join a gang...Archie goes to jail and Veronica and Hiram are at war. We break up, Veronica cheats on Archie and I go for a ghoulie. Now here I am in the hospital with you by my side. I'm realizing we should've never pushed each other away, to begin with." My hands were shaking as Jug kissed them.
"Never again. Never....again." He repeated as we heard the sound of heels running down the hall. Followed by a very clumsy ginger popping his head into the room seconds after Veronica.
"Oh my god, I've been worried sick. The nurse wouldn't let us down the hall. Only family. I'm guessing Jug said you were his wife. The oldest trick in the book. I was going to use that one but then Archiekins would've looked like quite the man-whore." Veronica laughed.
"Oh god, Betty I'm sorry I haven't been around. I've been trying to keep a really low profile after just barely making it out of juvie." Archie's tone was sympathetic as him and Veronica pulled up a couple of chairs.
"It's no one's fault. Trust me Jug and I have been running around trying to figure everything out like True Detective and Nancy Drew. But nothing seems to be making sense. Nothing really made sense when we weren't together Jug." I said as I looked at him.
"Well, now the core four is fully back together. So Riverdale better watch out." Veronica said.
"Since you'll be here with Betty...Jug is there anything Ronnie and I can do to help?" Archie asked him.
"Yeah Arch...you and V can take Betty and I's place as acting king and queen of the serpents. Just for a week. We really have to focus on Betty's recovery. Come to us with any questions. Here are the jackets. Wear them with honor and remember the serpent code." Jug smirked.
"V you got this..." I said to her as I handed her my jacket.
"In unity there is strength." She said proudly.
"In unity there is strength." We all chanted as they put on Jug and I's jackets.
"Go make us proud. And meet with Hiram that's your first order of business. Sorry V." I sighed as I looked at her. She bit her lip nervously but nodded.
"I'm not Veronica Lodge. I'm the Southside Serpent acting Warrior queen and he's no match for me." V said proudly.
"Yeah and I'm the acting King. We got this." Archie said as they walked out hand in hand. Unlike how they walked in.
"This will definitely help them fall back in love with each other. You can see the pain in their eyes. This was definitely a strain on their relationship." I sighed.
"Betts it's been a strain on us too. They'll get Varchie back. Just like we got Bughead." Jug said as he climbed into the hospital bed with me. "Now my queen enough talk about what's going on in the outside world. How about we watch some reality tv." Jug said as he flipped through the channels on the tv above my bed. All was well in our kingdom for now. But as for the acting king and queen, they were going to watch as the city we once knew outside this hospital burned to the ground. At the hands of the acting queen's very own father, the gargoyle king himself...Mr. Hiram Lodge.
