01: Powers from the Past
Olivia Morgan didn't know what she had been expecting. Her day had started out normal enough; wake up, meet up with Chase for breakfast, head to the museum where she worked as her sister's assistant, and then head on the dig. But, to say her day ended abnormally would be an understatement.
Liv had been at the museum for a couple of hours by the time the abnormality started. Her job as Kendall's assistant and second-in-command meant that Liv was also in charge of most of the goings-on at the museum and made sure everything ran smoothly when her sister was too busy to look into it herself. As it were, a new shipment of fossilized Maiasaura eggs had gotten lost in transit, so it was Olivia's job to find out where they were so they could actually get to the museum in one piece.
The nineteen-year-old was so engrossed in looking through the shipping label for the dinosaur eggs and their transit schedule on her tablet that she wasn't looking where she was going and didn't see Chase until she, quite literally, ran into his back near one of the T-Rex skeletons.
Glancing up from her tablet, Liv couldn't help but smile as she looked at her Kiwi friend. The two of them had met in New Zealand a couple of years ago when Kendall, Keeper, and Liv had tracked him down after he had bonded to his Energem (long story). Chase was a lot more carefree and laid-back than other friends of Liv's, but the brunette wouldn't have it any other way. Sometimes though, Olivia wished that Chase would be less focused on girls and more focused on his work.
"Good morning," Chase said, his New Zealand accent thick as he removed his headphones from where they had been situated on his ears, the young man listening to music as he pushed a cart full of dig equipment across the museum. "I was wondering where you ran off too,"
"Ngh," Olivia grumbled as she pulled up the transit schedule on her tablet again and turned it around, showing Chase the map and route that apparently, the delivery company had not followed. "Apparently, delivery drivers don't know the difference between Amber Beach and Albuquerque. The eggs are all the way in New Mexico! Kendall is going to kill me when she finds out,"
"Look," Chase began, holding up both of his hands to sway Liv away from a full-blown freakout, and also make her feel better about what had happened to the eggs. "It wasn't your fault the Maiasaura eggs got lost in transport. I'm sure Miss Morgan will understand when you tell her,"
Olivia had to admit that Chase did have a point. Kendall Morgan might've seemed intimidating and almost downright scary to the other employees, but the director of the museum had always had a soft spot for her sister, and though Liv was almost six years younger than her sister, the two of them had always been close.
Liv sent a quick message off to the person in charge of the delivery of the dinosaur eggs, informing them of the mix-up and sending the address of Amber Beach's museum, in case of maybe getting the Maiasaura eggs before the exhibit was scheduled to open in three days.
Before she was able to say anything though, in response to Chase's reassurance, someone walked up to the two of them, causing both Chase and Liv to look at the newcomer. He looked to be about their age, maybe a year or so younger, wearing a red-and-gray henley with a large backpack.
"Uh, excuse me," the newcomer was saying when Chase and Liv looked over at him. "Do either of you work here?"
"Yeah, actually!" Olivia said giddily, her mood already improving from earlier. She always liked to help visitors at the museum when they seemed lost. "My sister's the director, so I'm basically in charge whenever she's not around. What'd you need help with?"
The young man held a leather journal in between the three of them, and Liv tilted her head around so she'd be able to see what the guy specifically wanted help with.
"I'm looking for this cave," he said, pointing to a particular spot on the hand-drawn map that was on one of the open pages. "My dad did some exploring here ten years ago,"
Liv asked the young man if she would be able to look at his journal more closely, and when he said she could, Olivia took the journal so she'd be able to get a better look at it, and then showed Chase the map.
"You said you were looking for Sampson Caves?" Olivia asked, gaining her a nod. "It's a volcanic cave system about 15 miles north of the city. Shouldn't be too hard to find,"
"That fossil," Chase piped up, pointing towards the T-rex skeleton they were all standing beside. "Was found there,"
"Awesome," the young man said as Liv gave him back his notebook and he scribbled something down before stuffing it into his backpack. "Thanks!"
Chase and Olivia went to walk away as the young man took a selfie in front of the massive fossil skeleton, and as they neared the Dino Bite Cafe, the museum's resident eatery and where Chase worked whenever he wasn't doing other stuff around the museum, the Kiwi bumped his hip against Liv's, just as the delivery company's representative sent a message back to her, saying that they'd reroute the Maiasaura eggs as soon as possible.
"You need to destress," he began as Liv glanced over at him, Chase having read the message over her shoulder. "The eggs are on their way, so I think this calls for a smoothie,"
Olivia tried to protest as Chase grabbed her hand and began to lead her into the cafe, the two of them leaving the cart of dig equipment outside the large dinosaur mouth that acted as the cafe's entrance.
It didn't help things that one of the first people Olivia saw as she walked inside the cafe was her sister, sitting by herself at a table in the middle of the cafe, working on some things as she nursed a bowl of soup.
When Liv saw Kendall, she metaphorically dug her heels into the floor and all but yanked Chase to a stop. As he turned back to look at her, Olivia turned around and started to leave the cafe, but Chase grabbed onto her shoulders and turned her around before she was able to get very far.
"Relax," he said as he lead Olivia past Kendall and to the counter, without the blonde woman noticing them, and the two of them sat down, Chase keeping a watchful eye on the brunette so she wouldn't bolt. "The eggs are on their way, aren't they?" he asked, and Liv gave a small nod. "Then you have nothing to worry about. If Miss Morgan asks, just tell her that,"
"But, Chase--" Liv went to protest again, but as another worker set down their drinks, Chase just waved a hand.
"You need to relax," he said for the third time that morning as he slid Liv's drink in her direction. "There. Mango smoothie, your favorite,"
A commotion from over in Kendall's direction made Liv glance over towards her sister in time to see another waitress at the cafe, Shelby Watkins, accidentally drop a dinner roll from the tray she was carrying into Liv's sister's bowl of soup, causing it to splash upwards onto Kendall's shirt.
Liv had known Shelby for about a year--she had been the one who had hired the younger girl to work at the cafe, after all--and Liv admired the passion that Shelby shared for dinosaurs. She was just a little too distractable at times, especially when she wanted something when she should've been focusing on something else.
Looking away from Kendall and Shelby, Olivia looked down again towards her tablet, scrolling through the shipping label for the dinosaur eggs. To say she was still stressed about the potential loss of the Maiasura eggs would be an understatement, but she knew that Chase had a point...again. One of her bad habits was overthinking things and making minuscule things out to be worse than they actually were. As she sipped her smoothie, her tablet dinged again, causing Liv to glance at it with her smoothie straw still in her mouth.
The timer that had gone off was one of the many, many reminders that Liv had set for herself, just so she knew everything was running according to schedule. This one, in particular, signified that there were only twenty minutes left before she and Chase had to go with Kendall and their friend Koda on the dig.
"Time to go?" Chase asked as Liv dismissed the timer, and the brunette nodded. Standing up, Liv took her smoothie and allowed Chase to follow her as the two of them walked out of the cafe, passing by the table where Shelby had set down the tray of food she'd been carrying when she'd accidentally spilled on Kendall, though Liv also noticed that the four girls at the table still had their menus.
Liv shook her head, looking back down at her tablet and using her peripheral vision to walk as she and Chase began to make their way towards the back of the museum and the loading dock, where they were setting up to go onto the dig.
Chase was pushing the cart of equipment again, and the squeaky wheels made it kind of hard to hear things over the noise of the museum-goers talking, but as she continued to sip her smoothie, Liv heard someone calling her and Chase's names.
"Chase! Liv!" the person was all but shouting as they grew closer. "Chase! Liv!"
Olivia looked around for a couple of seconds after grabbing Chase's arm and bringing him to a stop, before finally, she spotted Shelby, carrying a paper bag from the Dino Bite Cafe in one hand. Why the girl was ditching work, Liv wasn't sure.
"Hey, Sheri," Chase told Shelby as he and Liv finally paused, his forgetting Shelby's name causing Olivia to roll her eyes as Chase glanced down at the bag in Shelby's hand before giving Shelby a look, his Kiwi charm suddenly turned up to level-100. "You bringing me a present?"
"It's Shelby," Shelby corrected him sharply, before shuffling her feet. "So..." she trailed off, looking over the cart of dig equipment that Chase had been pushing across the floor. "You guys going fossil-hunting?"
Liv bit back a sigh as she realized what exactly Shelby wanted, and why she had basically been chasing the two of them down halfway across the museum. Olivia opened her mouth to tell Shelby she wasn't able to come on the dig, but before she could speak, Chase did.
"Yeah," he said simply, looking over at the dig's equipment. "Supposed to be a great find,"
Great find indeed. Olivia might've thought Shelby was nice and had a good heart for studying dinosaurs, but there was no way the nineteen-year-old was about to tell her that the reason they were going on the dig today was to look for the Pink Energem. And Chase might've been unable to resist a pretty face, but even he knew keeping the secret of the existence of the Energems was important.
Shelby rounded the corner of the cart, eyes latching onto where Liv had set her tablet when she'd heard her name being called. Picking it up, Shelby gave a squeal of excitement when she saw what particular dinosaur the team was trying to find on this particular day.
"Triceratops!" Shelby exclaimed, and Liv couldn't help but give the girl a nod of confirmation. "You're digging up my favorite dinosaur. See?" Shelby added, lifting up her hair to show Chase and Liv the nametag she wore for the Dino Bite Cafe. The silhouette of a Triceratops stood front and center on the plastic badge.
"Let's just cut to the chase..." Chase added, causing Liv to roll her eyes again. "And check out a movie?"
Luckily, Shelby didn't seem as if she would be swayed by Chase's Kiwi charm, because she huffed out a laugh and set down Liv's tablet again.
"Did that line work on New Zealand girls?" Shelby asked, and Liv tilted her head to the side as Chase heaved a sigh.
"He wishes it did," the older brunette said, ignoring the offended look that Chase sent her before the two of them continued their trek to the loading dock, where Koda likely was already packing up the truck. Only this time, Shelby started to follow them.
"You're so rude," Chase said to Liv as they walked, but Olivia could see that he was struggling to hold back a smile.
"How about..." the waitress began slowly, and Olivia braced herself for the request that she knew was coming. "Instead of a movie, you just let me go on the dig with you?"
Liv couldn't help but glance over at Chase, only to see the Black Ranger staring at her already before they both looked back towards Shelby.
"Shelby, I'm sorry," the older girl said, hugging her tablet to her chest. Since technically, she was in a higher position of authority in the museum job hierarchy than Chase, it was up to Olivia to break the news to Shelby. "It's museum policy. You're not qualified to come on the dig," Also since the dig was a cover for searching for an Energem, adding anyone else to the dig put the entire operation at risk. But, Liv didn't say that last part.
The trio crossed paths with Koda as the living caveman (another long story) hefted a crate on one shoulder, a crate that Liv was sure weighed close to a hundred pounds. As she and Chase passed him, Olivia also saw Koda get cornered by Shelby as she held the Dino Bite bag out towards him, and Liv bit back another sigh.
It was unlikely that Shelby would get Koda to allow her to go on the dig, but still. She paused at the passenger door to the museum's pickup truck, checking the transit schedule for the Maiasaura eggs again as Chase began loading the equipment from the cart into the bed of the pickup truck.
Dejected from gaining no headway with Koda, Liv saw Shelby plop down on a nearby crate just as Koda lifted the crate, with Shelby still on top of it, up into the air before setting it down on the truck bed.
Finally, Liv saw Kendall enter the loading dock from deeper into the museum, still wiping at the lapel of her jacket as she tried to remove the soup stain from when Shelby had accidentally spilled on her earlier in the cafe.
Olivia walked over to her sister to update her on the progress of the Maiasaura eggs that had now been retrieved from the Albuquerque museum and were on their way to California, but before she could talk, Shelby cornered the museum director--and Liv was just assuming here--and was about to ask if she was able to come on the dig.
But, Kendall was more adept at realizing when Shelby wanted something, so before the eighteen-year-old was able to ask her question, Kendall spoke on her own.
"I think your party in Booth 4 is missing a dinner roll," Kendall snarked, and as Shelby opened her mouth to voice her request, Kendall turned around. "And no," she said firmly, holding up a hand. "You can't come. Museum policy,"
Kendall and Shelby said the last two words in unison, but while Kendall was being serious, Shelby said with more tiredness and borderline insubordination. But, when Liv and Kendall walked around the side of the pickup to make sure the tarp covering all of their equipment was secure, Shelby followed, and suddenly started spouting off facts.
"A Triceratops head grew to be seven feet long," Shelby started, and Liv did her best to ignore her as she did some final checks. "Only two of the horns were bone; one was just ligament,"
"Keratin, actually," Liv corrected the other brunette, only half-focusing on Shelby and her sister before giving Shelby a smile that Liv hoped was reassuring. "But, nice job on the facts,"
Shelby, it seemed, wasn't very amused, and just sent Olivia a mild glare before she turned back to Kendall, and her expression turned pleading.
"Give me a shot, Miss Morgan," Shelby told Kendall, her voice turning quieter at the end. "Please? I know as much about dinosaurs as anyone on your crew, maybe even more than Liv,"
Olivia didn't know how much of a truth that was, but she did have to admit that Shelby's knowledge about dinosaurs was pretty vast, and had it been any other dig, other than one where they could potentially find an Energem, Liv probably would've caved and let Shelby come along.
But, as it were, keeping the existence of Energems and Rangers a secret took precedence over whether or not Shelby knew her dinosaurs, so as the brunette looked pleadingly at Olivia and Kendall, Liv heaved a sigh.
"Shelby, I'm sorry, you can't," she said, and Shelby's face crumpled again. "And besides," Liv added, glancing sparingly across the loading dock where Chase and Koda were allegedly making some final inspections. "Chase and Koda are both talented and highly-trained museum employees,"
The reality of it though, as the three young women turned to look at the two guys, seemed extremely dubious. Koda was currently licking his fingers of the remains of the Bronto Burger Shelby had tried to bribe him with, while Chase was trying to spin his skateboard around on his head...and failing miserably.
"They hide it well," Shelby muttered, and Liv hissed a breath out.
"You have no idea," she said, as Kendall nodded in agreement. The fact that Chase and Koda acted so much like boys and still managed to be Power Rangers never ceased to amaze either of the Morgan sisters.
As Koda suddenly let out a loud burp, the noise must've made Kendall come to her senses, because the blonde shook her head and held up both hands before she turned to look at Shelby again.
"You do have a job to get back to, right?" she asked, and though it was phrased as a question, Liv knew it was more of a command than a request. Without waiting for an answer from Shelby, Kendall walked away, and with one more apologetic glance toward the other girl, Olivia followed her sister.
Liv really did feel sorry for her, and again, had the dig been anything other than a cover for the search of an Energem, she likely would've caved in and let Shelby come. But, protecting the Energems took priority over the feelings of other museum employees, so hurting Shelby's feelings, as much as it hurt Liv's, was necessary.
Luckily, it seemed as if Shelby heeded Liv and Kendall's advice and headed back inside the museum to the cafe, because when Olivia turned back around to make some final final checks before leaving with her sister and friends to go to the dig, Shelby was nowhere to be found.
🖤🧡🖤
For the first couple of hours, the dig was almost boringly uneventful. Chase had uncovered some pretty cool triceratops fossils, sure, and Olivia and Kendall were continuously poring over the map of known locations where triceratops fossils had been found, to see if any of them would be the one where they discovered the Pink Energem, but so far, no luck.
Olivia knew that Keeper had said the Pink Energem was indeed bonded to the spirit of the Triceratops, but judging from the complete lack of finds at this particular dig site, it was unlikely the Energem was even here.
Standing up from where she had been sitting under the white awning, still poring over the map of fossil locations, Liv twisted her neck to the side as she stretched. After having been sitting down for the last two-and-a-half hours, it felt good to get up and move.
"I'm gonna go and take a break," she told Kendall, and when her sister gave a nod, Liv unzipped the tan museum coveralls that constituted the dig uniform and tossed it onto the chair she'd been sitting in.
She was still wearing the flowy cropped orange blouse and dark-wash high-waisted skinny jeans she'd been wearing back at the museum, and though it wasn't unbearably hot out, it felt nice to get out of the coveralls, if only for a little while. Her Energem was secure around its cord underneath her shirt, and after being bonded to it for almost two-and-a-half years now, the slight weight of the ancient gemstone was welcome, and Liv felt almost incomplete whenever she went without it.
Liv had also left the remains of her mango smoothie in the truck, and while the drink would likely be melted by now, it'd be better than nothing.
But, nothing could've prepared Olivia for the moment when, about three-fourths of the way between the dig site and the truck itself, the young Topaz Ranger noticed Shelby, of all people, standing in the truck bed, waving her arms wildly and jumping up and down, as if she was trying to gain someone's attention.
For a few seconds, all Liv did was stare at the younger girl in shock at the fact that Shelby was actually here, having blatantly disobeyed a direct order from her superior, before recovering herself and stalking over to the truck.
"What are you doing here?" Liv asked, eyes flicking once back over to where Koda, Chase, and Kendall were still at the dig site, but it seemed as if they were all distracted by the task at hand. "If Kendall finds you here--" If Kendall did find out Shelby was here, she would be in a lot of trouble, and would likely even lose her job. Insubordination or not, Shelby was a good worker, and Olivia didn't want to just lose her.
As it were, the darker-skinned girl cut Liv off with a wave of her hand, before hopping off the truck bed and yanking on the older girl's arm.
"Liv, he stole something," Shelby exclaimed, and while that revelation on its own was pretty shocking, Liv didn't get a chance to say anything about it, because the next thing she knew, Shelby was dragging her away from the dig site and into the forest, intent on following whoever it was that she had seen.
After a few minutes of stumbling through the underbrush, Liv dug her heels into the ground again and yanked Shelby to a stop. When the other girl turned to stare at her, wondering why Liv had stopped so suddenly, the nineteen-year-old fixed her with a look.
"Shelby," she said firmly, more in her "assistant director of the museum" mood and not that of a girl just around Shelby's age. "Who stole something? What did he steal? And where are going?"
"Some guy!" Shelby exclaimed as she continued to drag Olivia through the woods. "When I was hiding in the truck, he stole one of the crates. There was some sort of pink glow in it and--"
"Wait!" Liv cut Shelby off, holding up a hand as the two of them finally paused behind a thick tree trunk. "Did you say a pink glow?" Shelby nodded wildly, and Liv couldn't help but hiss out a breath from between her teeth.
This whole time, the Pink Energem had been right under her and the others' noses, and they hadn't even realized, and now it had been stolen. By Fury? Maybe. It had been a while since Liv had crossed paths with the lion-warrior beast, and she knew that he'd do anything to get the Energems. And plus, the Topaz Ranger was itching for a rematch.
Suddenly, Shelby ducked behind another nearby tree, and held a finger to her lips, signaling Liv to be quiet before pointing with her free hand off to the right.
"Shh," the brunette said quickly, causing Olivia to glance over at her. "There he is,"
Glancing around the side of the tree she herself was hiding behind, Liv saw who was likely the thief that Shelby'd said had stolen the crate containing the Pink Energem from the dig. Whoever the thief was, they were wearing a dark cloak concealing their identity, and though the shape beneath it looked too bulky to be Fury, the cloak's material was also flowy enough that the thief could be anyone.
"Yes. I finally found it," a gravelly voice said suddenly, and Liv narrowed her eyes as she realized that thief's voice didn't sound like Fury's. But at the moment, Liv was more worried about getting the Pink Energem back than the identity of the thief, whether or not it was Fury.
Quickly darting from behind her tree to one closer to Shelby, Liv accidentally disturbed a pile of dry leaves, the noise of the leaves crackling catching the thief's attention, who spun around so fast, Liv was afraid she'd been seen.
"Who's that?" the thief exclaimed, and Olivia found herself holding her breath and clenching her eyes shut as both she and Shelby pressed their backs against the trunks of their respective trees, hoping that the thief wouldn't see them.
Abruptly realizing that the thief's attention was also divided, Liv glanced again towards Shelby and motioned. Shelby, somehow understanding what the older girl wanted, picked up a nearby stone and lobbed it in the opposite direction of the three of them.
When the thief started coming to investigate the sudden noise of the rock landing off to the side, Liv darted out from behind her tree and over to the boulder where the thief had set down the crate that was the one that Olivia hoped contained the Pink Energem.
But, unfortunately, just as Liv grabbed the crate and yanked it off the boulder, the thief turned around again and saw her.
"Hey!" they cried out and lunged for both Liv and the crate, but Olivia jerked out of the way just in time.
In any other situation, Olivia would morph, but that would be a lot to explain to Shelby, especially if the contents of the crate didn't turn out to be the Pink Energem. As it were, just as the thief was reaching for Olivia again, in came Shelby, running up to the thief from behind and kicking them in the back, knocking the thief off-balance and making them stumble, having to brace themselves against the boulder to keep from falling over.
"Leave her alone!" Shelby shouted, and for a few seconds, all Olivia could do was stare in shock, impressed at Shelby's sheer sense of bravery. Then, the nineteen-year-old shook herself and remembered the current situation she and Shelby were in.
"Run!" Liv shouted, getting to her feet and shoving the crate into Shelby's arms before taking off, the other girl hot on her heels. Blasts of blue energy hit the ground on either side of Shelby and Liv but thankfully didn't hit either of the girls.
The color of the energy, having likely been from the thief, began to make Olivia even less sure that the thief was Fury, which didn't make any sense, especially since Keeper had specifically said there weren't any other monsters on Earth.
"Get back here!" the thief shouted as they shot another burst of blue energy towards Liv and Shelby, and as she ran, Olivia reached into her pocket for her Dino Com, to both alert Chase and Koda to the possible discovery of the Pink Energem, but also to call for backup, because she desperately needed it if she wasn't able to morph in front of Shelby.
Liv's panic upped tenfold as she realized her pockets were empty, before realizing that she had left her Dino Com at the dig site, sitting on the table with the map of triceratops fossil locations. And thus, she was pretty much cut off from any help Chase and Koda could give.
One particular blast from the thief exploded right in front of both Liv and Shelby, momentarily blinding the girls and making them fall to the ground, the crate flying out of Shelby's hands and landing on the ground between the girls and the thief.
Olivia was pretty winded, having landed on her back when she and Shelby fell and was able to see the thief, though they were still shrouded by their cloak, stop in front of the two of them, jerking one hand in their direction.
"No one steals from me!" the thief shouted, before, to Liv's even greater shock, the guy that she and Chase had directed to Sampson Caves earlier that morning swooped in on what looked like a rappelling line, swiping the crate right out from under the thief's nose before they were able to pick it up again.
"Think again!" the guy shouted, and the thief seemed to stare at the spot where the crate had been in shock for a moment before whipping around.
"No!" the thief shouted. "Give that back!"
"Hey," the guy from the museum began once he had landed on the ground beside Olivia and Shelby. "You two okay? Hey, it's you!"
The guy had obviously recognized Liv from earlier, and though they weren't far from Sampson Caves, Olivia was still wondering what he was doing in the middle of the forest. Though, the same could be said for her and Shelby if someone didn't know that they were chasing down a thief.
"I'm Tyler Navarro," the guy from the museum--Tyler--said as Liv stood up, dusting herself off before reaching over to help Shelby. "Nice to meet you, uh..."
"Olivia Morgan," Liv said, keeping one eye on the thief as she quickly introduced herself to Tyler. "But, my friends call me Liv. And, this is Shelby,"
"Where did you come from?" Shelby exclaimed at Tyler, eyes wide, and frankly, Liv was kind of wondering that as well.
"Oh, you know," Tyler responded, sounding ridiculously nonchalant, given the situation. "Just, uh, in the neighborhood,"
"There is no neighborhood," Shelby retorted, and Tyler chuckled, before holding out the crate he had picked up.
"Uh, I believe this is yours," he said, before movement from where the thief was standing caught all three teens' attention.
"I don't have to hide!" the thief exclaimed. "Time to destroy you!" the thief ripped off his cloak to reveal a monster that was definitely not Fury. Unless Fury had suddenly gotten chill-blasted and turned into a spiky version of the abominable snowman.
Now, Liv's earlier aversion to morphing in front of Shelby, and now Tyler, was draining away, and her survival instincts and Ranger training were taking over.
"What is that thing?" Shelby whispered to Liv and Tyler, but for once, Olivia ignored the younger girl and took out her Dino Saber, pointing the sharp end towards the monster, to which Shelby exclaimed. "Where did you get a sword?"
"You're not Fury!" Olivia exclaimed, ignoring the confused looks that Tyler and Shelby sent her, both of them equally shocked at the sudden appearance of Liv's Dino Saber. "Who are you?"
"Call me Ice Age!" the monster shouted back, as Tyler whispered to Shelby 'What's a fury?', to which Shelby shrugged. She had no idea. "Now," Ice Age continued. "Prepare to be destroyed!"
"I met him in a cave," Tyler piped up, and Liv spared a surprised glance at the young man as he looked at Shelby, who was still holding the crate from earlier. "He must really want that box,"
Liv wasn't really prepared to explain what exactly might be in the crate, but Tyler acted before she was able to say anything. Tyler suddenly reached into his backpack and pulled out a banana, though why he needed that, Liv wasn't sure.
Apparently, it wasn't what he was looking for, because Tyler tossed the fruit to the side and reached into his backpack again, though this time, the thing he pulled out was a pair of boxer shorts. Tossing those to the side too, Tyler reached into his backpack for the third time and pulled out a small shovel, and Liv sighed as she realized that Tyler's big plan was to fight the monster, even if it was only with a spade.
Brave, but foolish, especially if this was a monster who knew Fury.
"What are you going to do?" Shelby asked, her voice rising the longer she spoke. "Dig us an escape tunnel?"
"Enough!" Ice Age, obviously fed up with the three teens' interference in his plan, suddenly jerked his arm upward, sending another series of freezing blasts of energy in their direction.
Liv managed to block a few of the blasts with her Dino Saber, but Tyler also stepped in to help, holding his shovel up like a shield, the metal making up the shovel causing the blasts from Ice Age to ricochet off, and away from him, Olivia, and Shelby. Tyler even managed to lob one of the blasts back towards Ice Age, hitting the ground in front of the monster and throwing him back against a tree.
"Score!" Tyler exclaimed before he and the girls looked at his shovel. Or rather, what remained of it. Ice Age's blasts, while they had been deflected by Liv and Tyler, had also melted the blade of the shovel, and now the end was just a charred mess.
"You'll pay for that!" Ice Age shouted as the monster managed to climb to his feet, and Tyler skittered back towards the girls as he glanced at Liv.
"You're the one with the cool sword," he said quickly. "Your turn for an idea,"
Liv opened her mouth, to say what, she wasn't entirely sure yet, but before she was able to speak, Shelby stepped up next to her, still holding the crate that likely contained the Pink Energem.
"Fire at us," Shelby began. "And, uh, you might destroy your precious...thing in this crate,"
"You know what's in the crate?" Tyler whispered quickly as Ice Age growled in frustration, and Shelby glanced at him.
"No idea," she whispered back, and Liv looked over at both of them.
"I might," she said, causing both Tyler and Shelby to stare at her as Liv continued to keep one wary eye on Ice Age. "And if I'm right, we cannot let that monster get it,"
"What I want," Ice Age said suddenly, as Liv readied her Dino Saber again. "Will survive. You," he continued. "Won't!"
This time, when Ice Age shot the blue blasts of energy toward her, Shelby, and Tyler, Olivia was able to block a majority of them, but one particular blast came directly for her, and when she held up her Dino Saber as a shield, the resulting shockwave sent the three of them (Liv, Tyler, and Shelby) went flying, the crate also falling to the ground along with Tyler's backpack as the three teens landed heavily on the ground.
As she struggled onto her hands and knees, Liv noticed that her own Energem, the cylindrical orange topaz glittering in the sun, had come out from underneath her shirt, dangling on its cord in front of her chest. But, that wasn't all that Liv noticed.
She'd been right about the crate Ice Age had stolen from the dig containing the Pink Energem, but when Tyler's backpack had flown into the air, the Red Energem also flew out, landing on the ground nearby. Liv didn't know where Tyler had found it, but two energems in one day? After only finding three over the past three years; this was unreal.
Ice Age apparently thought so too, because when he saw the Pink and Red Energems, along with Liv's Topaz Energem, which was still securely around the nineteen-year-old's neck, he exclaimed: "Three Energems! This is better than I hoped!"
Suddenly, as Liv's head continued to pound from the beating she took from Ice Age, she saw the Pink and Red Energems start to glow as Shelby and Tyler began to reach for them. Ice Age noticed this as well, and he was decidedly less impressed.
"Don't even think about it!" he cried out before a wave of blue energy exploded from Ice Age's chest, bringing with it a blast of freezing cold air that overtook Olivia, Shelby, and Tyler before any of them were able to fight back, Liv only just managing to wrap her hand around her Energem before she was frozen solid.
Liv knew that being bonded to her Energem would keep the cold from actually killing her, but that didn't mean it still felt good. It felt like being dumped into an ice-cold bath and not being able to move. Liv could still feel things, but that was about it.
Then, from where her hand had been frozen holding onto her Energem, Liv felt the small stone start to warm up, heating to the point where it was almost painful, before the ice surrounding her cracked and then shattered. Once she was free, Liv sat there for a moment on the forest floor, dazed beyond belief considering the events of the past hour.
Looking around, Liv noticed that Shelby and Tyler were free too, and judging from the way they were both clutching the Pink and Red Energems respectively in their hands, she figured they had bonded to them, which was great, Liv's team needed all the help they could get in finding and protecting the remaining five Energems.
"What?" Ice Age exclaimed when Liv, Shelby, and Tyler were suddenly freed from their frozen prisons. "You broke my precious ice?"
Dino Morphers appeared in Tyler and Shelby's hands, and though they were still encased in rock, having not been activated yet, Liv knew it was only a matter of time before Ice Age was destroyed.
"What is this?" Shelby asked quietly, and Tyler shook his head as he turned his Morpher around, inspecting the blaster.
"I have no idea," Tyler answered, and Liv glanced over at them.
"Put your Energem inside," she said, and only after Tyler and Shelby glanced at her, confused, did Olivia remember that the two of them didn't actually know what the Energems were yet. "The crystals," she specified, gesturing to her own Energem around her neck. "Put them inside the blaster, like this,"
Liv used a Dino Charger to activate her own Morpher, and though the 'Maia Charger: Engage' voice likely startled both Tyler and Shelby, the demonstration was enough for the two of them to do as Liv said, inserting their Energems into the ends of their Morphers and causing the stone casing to disintegrate.
Tyler suddenly spun the dial on the Morpher, not noticing Liv's startled exclamation of "Wait!" as a blast of red energy exited the Morpher. Shelby managed to duck before the blast could hit her, and instead, the blast hit Ice Age, throwing the monster back again.
"Nice shootin', Tex," Shelby snapped at Tyler as she quickly moved out of the way of the line of fire.
"Sorry," he apologized quickly, waving the Dino Morpher around. "I don't know how to use this thing. Liv, you seem to know what you're doing, what do we do next?"
"Yeah, Olivia," Shelby added, as Liv glanced over at her. "What's going on?"
"I promise, I will explain everything later," Liv began, holding out one hand to placate Shelby. "Once we're out of danger. But now, I need you both to spin that dial, and then shoot,"
"Tyler showed that he can shoot," Shelby added snarkily, glancing at Tyler. "Why do we have to do it again?"
"I promise," Liv added. "This time will be different. Just trust me,"
"Okay," Tyler said immediately, spinning the dial on his Morpher again. "Let's do this!"
Shelby still seemed wary, but when Liv started spinning the dial on her Morpher as well, the younger brunette did the same, before all three of them pointed their blasters towards Ice Age.
This time, when the triggers on their blasters were pulled, no bursts of energy came out. Instead, the glowing and hologram-like heads of a red Tyrannosaurus, a pink Triceratops, and a glittery orange Maiasaura exited the end of the Dino Morphers before chomping down on Shelby, Tyler, and Liv.
"What?" Ice Age exclaimed in shock once the glows from the dinosaurs had dissipated. "They're Rangers!"
Liv never got tired of Morphing. Channeling the power of the Maiasaura was a feeling she never got tired of, and never would, regardless of the monsters she was facing.
"You guys look great!" Tyler exclaimed once he got over the shock of suddenly finding himself clad in red with a helmet over his head, but Liv admired him for feeling giddy.
"What happened to us?" Shelby asked, and Liv glanced over at the newly minted Pink Ranger, smiling under her helmet, even though Shelby wasn't able to see it.
"That's another thing I'll have to explain," the Topaz Ranger said before her grin widened. "But, I assume you feel a surge of power, right?"
"Yeah!" Tyler answered, his voice still sounding giddy. "It's awesome!"
"Give me my Energems!" Ice Age shouted, and Liv pointed the end of her Dino Saber at the monster once more.
"Your Energems?" she clarified. "I don't think so," Liv then glanced toward Tyler and Shelby. "We can take him down, but only if we work together,"
"Let's do it!" Tyler and Shelby exclaimed in unison, and Liv smiled beneath her helmet before the three of them turn to Ice Age.
This time, when the monster shot blasts of energy towards them, the three Rangers leaped into the air, clear above the explosions brought on by the energy blasts hitting the ground, and began their assault on the ice and snow monster.
Tyler struck first, flipping down in front of Ice Age as a way to distract the monster before spinning around and punching the thief in the stomach. When Ice Age went to swipe at the Red Ranger, Tyler managed to duck and roll away, before Shelby leaped in, kicking repeatedly at Ice Age's face.
"Think fast!" the Pink Ranger called out, just as Liv jumped in herself, brandishing her Dino Saber and slashing downward against Ice Age's torso, taking the monster's attention away from Tyler and Shelby, who feinted on either side of Ice Age to even further confuse the monster, before the new Rangers stood on either side of Olivia.
"Triple Punch!" the three of them shouted in unison before the trio all punched Ice Age at the same time, throwing the monster backward and onto his back on the forest floor.
"You're right!" Shelby exclaimed once she, Tyler, and Liv had straightened up. "This is awesome!"
"Glad you're warming up to it," Liv said to the younger girl as Shelby and Tyler exchanged a high-five.
"Totally!" Shelby continued, pumping her fists in the air and giving a little hop. "I've never felt such power!"
Suddenly, a loud roar echoed throughout the forest and the entire ground began to shake, making it hard for Liv to keep her balance as she turned around to see the massive T-Rex Zord thundering towards her, Shelby, and Tyler.
Olivia really should've expected this. She knew that once Tyler had bonded to his Energem, the T-Rex Zord would've awakened, but she hadn't quite expected it to be so big; the Red Energem's Zord was at least twice as big as Chase's, Koda's, or Liv's own Zord. Then again, the Para Zord, Maia Zord, and Stego Zord were all based on herbivorous dinosaurs and considering that the T-Rex Zord was based on a carnivorous dinosaur, it would make sense that the Red Energem's Zord would be bigger.
"What is that thing?" Tyler cried out as the Zord continued on its path of destruction straight towards them.
"I think it's a...T-Rex?" Shelby didn't sound too sure of her answer, but then again, Liv didn't think she'd be too confident either if she didn't know everything that she did about the Energems and their Zords.
The three Rangers dove out of the way just before the T-Rex Zord would've crushed them, and Liv felt herself de-morph as she landed heavily on the ground, winded. Looking over at Shelby and Tyler, Liv saw that the two of them had demorphed as well.
"The T-Rex Zord! It can't be!" Ice Age said, sounding almost awed by the appearance of the robotic living dinosaur. Ice Age also sounded a lot less awed when, to Liv's shock, the T-Rex Zord picked the monster up in its mouth and threw Ice Age so far away, that Liv wasn't able to see him anymore. "Put me down you lizard..."
With one last roar, the T-Rex Zord stomped away, and as she stood up, Liv fired off a quick text to Chase, since her Dino Com was still back at the dig site.
From: Liv To: Chase
Red and Pink found. Head to the museum without me, I'll meet you guys there later.
Almost immediately, Chase texted back.
From: Chase To: Liv
Seriously?! Everything good?
From: Liv To: Chase
I'm fine. Talk to you later
With that, Liv placed her cell phone back into the pocket of her jeans and slipped her Energem necklace back beneath her shirt, as Tyler hurried to help Shelby stand.
"Are you alright?" the young man asked, and Shelby glanced between Tyler and Liv before she spoke.
"Did we just fight an abominable snowman and almost get trampled by a T. Rex?" she asked, and Tyler nodded wildly, seeming almost giddy at the events of the last half hour.
"Yep," he answered simply, and Shelby gave a chuckle, sounding almost hysterical.
"Okay," she continued. "Just checking,"
The sound of an engine nearby made Liv turn, in time to see the truck from the museum driving away. Shelby obviously noticed it as well, because she ran slightly in that direction, before stopping as she realized that the truck was already too far away to be any help.
"There goes my ride," Shelby sighed, just as Liv walked up next to the younger girl and set a hand on her shoulder.
"Relax, Shelby," Olivia told her. "I told Chase to leave without us,"
"Really?" Shelby asked, turning around with her eyes wide. "Why?"
"Because the three of us," Liv continued, glancing between Shelby and Tyler. "Need to talk. I assume you have a car and didn't just walk out here in the middle of nowhere?" the question was directed toward Tyler.
In response, the newly minted Red Ranger just grinned, before reaching into the pocket of his pants and jingling a small key ring.
🖤🧡🖤
Tyler's red Jeep was plenty big enough for him, Shelby, and Liv, and as the three of them cruised down the road back towards the museum about ten minutes later, Tyler explained more about the journal that Liv and Chase had expected earlier, back when the Topaz Ranger had first met Tyler.
"This is your father's journal?" Liv asked from where she was sitting in the backseat, flipping through the pages of the journal Tyler had given her as he and Shelby sat up front.
"Yeah," Tyler answered, glancing over his shoulder sparingly before turning his gaze back to the road. "He, uh, disappeared ten years ago while he was on an expedition. He was a geologist. And he just...vanished. I really miss him,"
"I'm sorry," Liv told him, as Shelby sat silently in the passenger seat, and Tyler gave a small nod in thanks.
"Maybe tomorrow, or maybe ten years from now," Tyler continued. "But, I'm gonna find out what happened to him,"
"So that's why you were in the cave?" Shelby asked as Liv continued to flip through the pages of Tyler's dad's journal. "You were looking for clues?"
"Exactly," Tyler answered. "His journal says some creature was stalking him,"
"You think that...icy thing was it?" Shelby asked, just as Liv flipped to a particular page, and bit back a gasp as she saw the rough sketch on the page.
"Was this the creature stalking your dad?" Liv asked hurriedly, flipping the journal around and shoving it between the front seats so Shelby and Tyler were able to see it.
"Yeah, exactly," Tyler answered once he saw the drawing, and glanced over at Liv. "You've seen it before?"
Liv didn't answer right away, because frankly, she didn't know what to say in response to Tyler, because it hadn't been Ice Age who had been stalking Tyler's dad before he disappeared.
It had been Fury.
