Double update because I love you all so much heh
Don't forget to comment and vote :)
Do you ever just wait for something to happen? Like, you don't even know if this thing is gonna happen, but you want it to?
That's how I feel right now. I'm going through my entire school day, eyeing my phone.
Audrey gave Niall my phone number yesterday, and he has yet to call or text. It seems a little suspicious to me. I'm on edge all day.
I can't even focus during my classes. It's not like I want him to call me. I don't know why I'm getting all worked up.
That's a fat lie. I want to talk to him so badly. I want to talk to all of them, excluding Harry. I'm so thankful Audrey gave them my number. I didn't cave from my resolve, but I can still possibly talk to them. It's a loophole.
Gosh, I hope he calls soon.
When it's time to go to chemistry, I go to class early. I decide that if Laine doesn't regret kissing me, he'll sit next to me. If he does, he'll find another seat. We usually sit next to each other, but I guess I'll have to fend for myself if he chooses that last night was a mistake.
He walks into the classroom and I pretend to look busy, going through my notes. My heart thumps out of my chest as I wait for him to decide.
I see his shoes in front of me and look up. He gives me a white smile and points to the seat. "Is this seat taken?"
I roll my eyes. "You know no one would sit in your seat," I tease. He laughs and puts his stuff down in front of him before sitting. "Oh shoot, I forgot your jacket again." I mentally smack myself for two reasons. One: he probably doesn't give a shit about the jacket, and two: this can lead to a conversation about last night.
Luckily he doesn't comment on it. "Are you going to the bonfire tonight?"
"There's a bonfire?" I ask, clueless.
He laughs and stretches his arm around my seat, making my heart skip a beat. "Yeah, it's a PIKE thing. Happens every year."
I nod slowly. "I don't know."
"You're going," he says definitively. "And you can return the jacket then."
Who does he think he is, telling me what to do? I'm about to argue but the professor walks to the front of the class and begins lecturing.
You win this one, Laine.
When class ends, I shove all my stuff into my bag. Laine packs up quickly and stands. "I'll come pick you up around eight." And with that, he leaves.
I confusedly stare at his retreating figure. How does he do that? He makes no room for questions or hesitation.
Chemistry is my last class today. After, I head back to the dorm to take a nap. Sonia waves at me from her desk and continues doing her homework.
I toss my backpack on the ground and change into pajamas. Then I crawl into bed.
My nap is short. My phone rings and I immediately grab it, thinking it's Niall.
Disappointment courses through me when it's just Macy. "Hi," I sigh, trying not to sound disappointed.
She doesn't notice anything off. "Hey! Any update on Laine?"
"Oh yeah," I yawn. "He invited me to a bonfire tonight."
"Shut up! Is it the PIKE bonfire?"
I nod, then realize she can't see me. "Yeah."
"Dude, that's like so exclusive. You have to be invited to go!"
"Really? I didn't know it was such a big deal." Laine didn't make it seem as such.
She scoffs through the phone. "It's a huge deal. I can't believe he's taking you! You're basically official."
"I don't know," I hum. "I'm supposed to give him his jacket back tonight."
"Ellie, listen to me. If you bring the jacket with you and he makes excuses for you to keep it, that means you're basically official."
"No, we're not anything unless he asks me." I'm not going to assume things here. Assuming leads to inevitable heartbreak.
Sonia shoots me a proud smile across the room before continuing her homework.
"You're so old school!" Macy groans. "Fine, whatever. Just make your intentions clear because boys are clueless."
"You are right about that, dear Macy. I'll keep you updated. Bye."
After hanging up, I can't fall asleep again. I didn't know this event is a big deal and now I'm anxious about it.
I wish I didn't know.
I decide to work on some assignments instead. I sit at my desk and force myself to work instead of getting distracted. It's a hard task but Sonia's looming threats help me stay on task.
Six-thirty rolls around and I decide to put the work away. I grab my shower caddy and slip on my shower shoes and walk out to our communal bathrooms.
You'd think communal bathrooms are the worst part of living on campus, but it's really not that bad. At first, it sucked. Wearing shoes in the shower feels so unnatural, but I got used to it. The bathroom is one of the most social parts of dorms. The amount of friends you make when you brush your teeth alongside them is amazing.
I smile at a girl at the sink as I walk past her. I go straight to my favorite shower and set my stuff down. Tying my hair in a tight bun, I turn the water on and wait for it to heat. During this time, I strip off my clothes and toss them on the floor. It's time to wash it anyway.
The low water pressure hits my back and I sigh. That's one thing I definitely miss about having my own shower. But there's nothing I can do about it.
I exfoliate my face to prep it for makeup and lather up in soap.
Suddenly, I'm dizzy. Flashes of Harry's face appear in my vision. Bits of memories, when we showered together. My soapy hands trailing over his tattoed chest. His hands sliding from my back to my butt. His hair lathered in shampoo. His lips kissing every inch of my exposed skin.
I gasp and hold on to the wall for support. I feel lightheaded and out of breath. I lower the temperature of the water and finish up my shower as quickly as possible.
What was that about?
I wrap my gray towel around my body and pick up my stuff. Walking back to my room, I see several familiar faces. I smile as I pass, but my heart's still beating furiously.
Sonia eyes me warily when I finally reach the room. I don't even bother acting composed. I try to gasp for breath like a fish out of water.
"Are you okay?" she asks cautiously. I don't trust my voice, so I nod instead. She doesn't push it and refocuses on her laptop. She's no longer sitting at her desk, but lazing in her bed. Her AirPods are in, so I can only assume she's watching Netflix or something.
I check my phone which I had left on charge. No new numbers reaching out. I disappointedly sigh and get ready.
Since the January air is cold, I decide on a thick sweater and skinny jeans. I plan on wearing Laine's jacket for as long as possible tonight, then I'll give it back when he wants. The sweater should be thick enough to keep me warm. Besides, it's a bonfire. If anything, I can hover around there until I'm hot.
I zip up my combat boots. Yes, it's 2020 and I still wear combat boots. They're cute and go with everything!
I move to my desk and start on makeup, using my lamp as a ring light. I don't go too heavy, just some light stuff to accentuate my features.
My brown hair falls in waves around my face. I debate straightening it, but glance at the clock and realize I have no time.
"How do I look?" I ask, panicked, as I scramble around the room to get my stuff together.
"Cute!" Sonia chirps, her eyes never leaving her laptop. I roll my eyes and grab the jacket. "Have fun."
"Thanks," I smile before rushing out the door and downstairs.
I see him before he sees me. He's casually pacing, his hands in the pockets of his jeans. He's wearing a sweatshirt from his frat. His hair is purposely disheveled, making him look even younger.
His eyes light up he sees me. His gaze goes directly to his jacket that's now around my body, shielding me from the frigid wind.
"Hey," I smile. "You don't look too douchey for a frat boy."
He laughs, meeting me halfway. "And to think, I'm taking you to a frat function. I'm turning you into one of us." He fakes an evil laugh and pulls me into his side as we walk. I'm surprised by the gesture but don't make any move to change it. "You know, you should join a sorority."
I snort at the thought. "Hah, funny. I don't think I could handle the... intensity. Not to mention, I don't think I'd look good blond." Both of our faces scrunch in thought.
"You don't have to be blond," he defends his fellow Greek life. "But you're right. You're too snarky for them. They'd kick you out in a week."
"You think they'd actually let me in the first place? I'm honored," I wipe away a fake tear. He laughs and pulls me closer.
We walk a short distance to frat row. Upon reaching, I see the smoke floating in the sky. Music is blasting through bass speakers and huddles of people are socializing.
"Come on, I want you to meet some of the bros."
There's no way he said that unironically.
I burst out laughing. I have to physically stop walking to really laugh to the fullest extent. He gives me an amused look as he waits for me to calm down. "Your... bros?" I squeeze between breaths, but it only makes me laugh faster.
"Oh gosh El," he sighs with a playful smile. "You really don't enjoy Greek life."
"Only the parties," I agree, calming myself down. "Okay, okay. I'm sorry, it's just, you're such a typical Chad and I couldn't imagine hanging out with you in a million years." I realize how harsh that sounds and bite my tongue. Much to my surprise, he's smiling.
"Yet here you are, hanging with me."
"That I am," I smile, feeling giddy inside. "Okay, let's meet your bros Chad, Thad, and Hunter," I tease.
"Haha," he sarcastically laughs and pulls me back into his side. We reach a group of guys, some with girls by their sides. "Hey guys, this is Ellie."
Their gazes snap to his arm around my waist, then to his jacket on my shoulders. They nod slowly and smile, greeting me.
They begin having their dude talks and I zone out.
"So, what sorority are you in?" one of the blond girls ask, twirling her perfect hair around her finger.
"Oh, I'm not in one."
Their brows raise in surprise. "Huh... that's weird. Laine's gonna get points deducted for not bringing a fellow sister." I bite my tongue. Was I supposed to pretend I'm in a sorority? I don't want him to get in trouble for no reason.
"Which are you in?" I ask, trying to fill the awkward silence.
"Tri-delt."
I nod as if I understand any of the words coming out of their mouths. I don't get Greek life and I sure as hell don't see the appeal of it. I only like their parties.
"I'm gonna get a drink," I tell Laine. I walk off, but I feel a presence behind me.
"I'll come with," he smiles, grabbing my hand. I nod and we walk to the table. All the drink options are non-alcoholic as per campus rules, but I'm sure they're spiked by now.
"You don't have to leave your friends to come," I say nonchalantly.
He shrugs. "I live with those guys, I'll see them a lot. I'm here with you." Butterflies erupt in my stomach. Damn it, he's sweet.
"Okay," I say dumbly. Why can't I freaking act normal for once?
Instead of going back to his friends, we find a spot near the fire and sit on the small logs. The wind picks up and I scoot closer to him, selfishly taking part in his warmth.
"Hey, Ellie?"
I hum in response.
"So you really know nothing about fraternities? Nothing about their traditions and stuff?"
I pull away and look at him. "Nope, nada." He slowly nods, taking in that information. "Speaking of, I think I got your points deducted. I told the girls I'm not in a sorority."
"Oh, that's fine," he grins. "I never told anyone that you were so, you're all good."
I don't know what these points symbolize, but I assume they're important enough for them to bring it up.
"Ah," I lean back into him. He wraps his arm around me and holds me close. My eyes focus on the mesmerizing fire. The way the flames dance in the wind is captivating.
We sit like this for a while, but I notice the looks his brothers give him. Embarrassed, I sit up and away from him. He's confused, asking if everything's okay.
I realize I'm acting totally weird. Truth be told, this is weird. I'm surrounded by a bunch of dudes who think beer is acceptable to drink for breakfast and golf. Hell, I'm attracted to one! I don't know how to act around him. Are we together? Am I supposed to be affectionate?
"Yeah, just got uncomfortable," I lie. He nods and scoots closer, grabbing my hand and resting it on his leg.
"I want to ask you something."
"Yes?" My heart is beating out of my chest once again. This is it Ellie, he's going to ask you on a date! We stare at each other intensely.
My phone rings, breaking my daze. I ignore it at first, waiting for him to ask the damn question. I glance at the number and my heart drops.
"Fuck, I've been expecting this call. I'll be right back," I scramble to my feet and run to a quieter area. I pick up the phone and put it to my ear. "Hello?" I say shakily.
"Okay, don't be mad," an Irish voice calls out from the other side. I could cry out of happiness right now, even if my moment's been interrupted. "I know you don't want to talk to me but I couldn't help it."
"Niall!" I squeal.
"You don't sound upset," he points out, sounding amused. "Wait, where are you? What's all that noise."
"I'm at a bonfire. Oh gosh, I'm so happy you called."
"Aw shucks, you're busy. Listen, save this number and call me as soon as you're free, okay?"
I want to argue and say we can talk now, but it's not ideal. It's too loud and not to mention I'm here with Laine. I shouldn't just abandon him for long.
"Will do! Can't wait to talk to you soon." And I mean it.
I hang up and meet Laine back where I left him. I smile sheepishly as I sit back down.
"Sorry, I was expecting a call from someone in Europe. Had to pick up because of timezones."
"You're good," he reassumes our old position, my hand locked on to his.
Much to my disappointment, he never asks his earlier question. I don't want to come off as needy or clingy, so I don't bring it up again.
We socialize a little more but it's obvious Laine rather spend his time with me. I'm flattered, especially because I was half expecting him to ditch me halfway through. Plus I enjoy his company a scary amount.
"Let's dance," he says, breaking the silence.
"What?" I laugh.
"Come on," he stands up and stretches his hand for me to grab. I hesitantly take it and he pulls me onto my feet.
A slow, country song is now playing, a stark contrast to the rap blasting earlier. That's Florida for you.
He grabs my waist and I link my hands behind his neck. We sway in the music, whispering to each other.
"You look beautiful tonight, especially with that jacket around you."
I laugh but my cheeks flush ever so slightly. "Speaking of, remind me to give it back."
"Nah, then you'll be cold later. Just keep it for now."
"I can't... I feel bad."
He chuckles. "Don't. I'll feel worse if I let you freeze to death."
I look down at my shoes, avoiding his gaze. Butterflies swim in my stomach and I can't get over the giddy feeling.
When I look back up, I see his intense gaze fixated on me. I've never noticed how in-between his eye color is. From far away, they look green. Upon closer inspection, they're a mix between green and blue. "You have nice eyes," I blurt, then mentally smack myself on the head. Way to ruin the moment.
Instead, a faint smile plays at his lips. "You do too."
My breath hitches as he leans in closer. We've kissed once, but that was more private. Right now, we're in sight of all his friends.
He's kissing me in front of everyone. That has to mean something, right?
Our lips brush but I don't have the satisfaction of kissing him. One of his friends approaches us, demanding his attention.
We reluctantly pull away from each other. The guy doesn't seem affected that he just cockblocked us.
"Sup, Chad?" Laine says in all seriousness.
I stifle a laugh. Chad? They really exist? Good to see the stereotypes aren't that far off.
Laine glances at my reaction and I see his firm demeanor fade a second before he gets serious again.
"Uh, a guy is harassing a girl and he won't stop," Chad says.
Laine sighs and holds his head. "Okay, I'll take care of it. Where?"
"North side of the lot. Thanks, man."
He walks away and I give a questioning look. "What's that about?"
"I'm kinda known as the guy who puts sexual predators in their place."
Huh. He really is a knight in shining armor.
I eagerly follow him, excited to see how this plays out. I don't get why it's his job. There are definitely bulkier guys here, so why is he the one who stops everyone?
When the harasser comes into view, I gasp. He's twice the size of Laine. I want to go back and yell at Chad. How does he expect him to handle this?
"Is there a problem here?" Laine's smooth voice calls out in a threatening tone. I involuntarily shudder.
"Nope. Just trying to get this lovely girl to have a good time," the harasser's deep voice responds as if he's done nothing wrong.
I see the girl he's referring to. She's a short Latina girl, squirming in his grip. She demands him to get off her, but he stays put.
"Blake, need I remind you that consent matters? Or should we take this to the board?" Laine's voice is chilling. Even the Blake guy freezes in his tracks. Imagine my sex-deprived state.
He lowers his head and releases the girl. "No sir."
Sir?! What the hell is going on here?!
"Good," Laine pats him on the arm. "Now, if I ever catch you harassing someone else, I won't hesitate to tell them."
Blake nods and begins to walk away, but it's not over.
"Uh uh, Blake, are we forgetting something?" Laine gestures to the girl, effectively stopping him in his tracks.
"I'm sorry," Blake apologizes. The girl weakly nods her head and watches as he trudges away.
Once he's out of earshot, I laugh. "Holy shit! That was amazing!"
He humbly brushes it off and approaches the girl. She furiously thanks him. He offers her any help, but she claims she has a date here who's probably worried about her. He nods and explains that if she needs any help at all, to ask around for him.
"You know, I thought you were supposed to beat him up! When I saw the size of the guy, I was like holy shit, you'd get crushed. That was so cool," I exclaim.
He looks slightly offended. "Why would I beat him up?"
I shrug. Was beating up creeps not normal? "Well... my ex... nevermind. Anyway, wow!"
"Wait, you don't think I could take him?" He flexes his biceps proudly.
"Look," I put a hand on his bicep, forcing it down. In the process, I get a feel for how strong they are. I'm impressed. "You're super strong, but that dude was huge. Like he'd sit on you and you'd deflate."
He laughs at the thought. "That's an interesting way of seeing it."
"Either way dude, that was impressive," I sigh dreamily.
"Thank you," he bows. "Do you want to get outta here?"
I glance at the time on my phone and see it's approaching midnight. "Oh shoot, I have an 8 am tomorrow."
He playfully groans. "Nerd."
I shoot him a playful glare. "Maybe if you whackjobs didn't have parties on weeknights..."
"Okay, I'll give you that." He intertwines his hand into mine. "Come on, let's drop you home."
We walk the way we came, our joined hands swinging at our sides. He fills me in on more of his frat information and I try to keep up. They have a lot of rituals to do.
"I had fun tonight, thanks for the invite," I smile once we get to my building. We turn to face each other. "Last call for the jacket..."
He shakes his head and slickly puts his hands in the front pockets of it. Using that, he pulls me closer to him. "Not yet."
I cock my head at his answer, but he closes the distance between us and finishes what he started at the party. My mind goes to mush and I forget about everything except his lips.
"My soul, I've missed you so much," a familiar voice rings through my ears. A voice that feels like home. I desperately pull into the kiss, wanting to be as close as possible. Then, snapping out of it, I open my eyes.
Disappointment courses through me when it's still Laine in front of me. I pull away and glance around, making sure I'm hearing things.
I swear I heard Harry. I swear it felt as if I was kissing him.
Why the hell would Harry be here? And why am I hearing his voice when I'm kissing another guy?
"You okay?" Laine's concerned face reappears in my vision.
I shake my head of the thoughts. "Yeah, thought I heard something."
"Don't worry, I'd protect you," he beams. I smile and give him a short kiss on the lips.
"I'll see you on Friday?"
He shakes his head. "See you then."
"Thanks for walking me back."
"No problem," he whispers. Part of me wants to kiss him again, but the other doesn't. I don't know what I'll imagine if I do.
"Goodnight," I smile, letting go of his grip and finally going inside the building.
When I'm inside, I lean against the wall and try to steady my breathing.
What the hell is going on with me?
~
I KNOW MINIMAL ABOUT FRATS SO I'M SORRY I'M JUST TAKING WHAT I SEE ON MY COLLEGE CAMPUS AND APPLYING IT.
Don't kill me :)
Also, don't kill me for saying this but I actually love Laine. He has a special place in my heart. When I stopped writing this story, I actually got motivated when I reread his conversations with Ellie. You've barely read about him but you'll see ;) Isn't he such a sweetheart though?
