Chapter 8: Can't Stop
It didn't take long for the police to be called to the school the next day, as the sliced up body had fallen through the vent and went into the classroom that said vent went into. Once the students had arrived, the girls screamed and ran out of the room while someone else called the police. They quickly identified the body as Frederick von Aegis, the noble-background student that, according to his parents, didn't come home the previous night. It was incredibly difficult to recover said body, due to it having been chopped up by the multiple fans in the vent. Due to how FV was of nobility, his parents enforced an extended investigation by the police in the school. This one took an entire month to clear out, and during the investigation, Kinzie's class attendance dwindled, only showing up about 3 days in a week to avoid having the cops being suspicious of her. While they did investigate her house, due to the basement door being hidden behind a bookcase, she was able to hide everything that would potentially link her to the murder. There weren't any security cameras on the roof nor on the fire escape, so she was able to evade being seen. She had to sneak around the cameras on the way up to the roof though, but overall her scheme went fairly well. Matt on the other hand wasn't doing very well, as now he'd lost his last friend. He was innocent as well, only wanting to help Matt get over all of his problems and maybe focus on bettering his future, everything else maybe somewhere down the line instead. He's spent his off-time at home a lot more, wondering what he's gonna do now that he's got nowhere to go. It was the last two months of classes, so he should just try to survive that long, right?
After FV's death, Matt now stays on a bench in his off time a lot more, hardly conversing with anyone. He had a slight fear that at this point, anyone he tried to befriend would meet the same fate as the others, abruptly killed just for simply being associated with him. As a result, he took up an anti-social personality, only talking with other people for school-related reasons. He'd been trying to find a way to let go of all his despair, but couldn't think of a good one. As he walked around the campus one time, he looked at the location where they did the talent show a few months ago, and got an idea. Later that day, he went searching for a good song to sing, but there's a bit of a difference for this performance. Particularly, that he wasn't gonna be performing this for anyone around. He was planning to set up a light show concert, albeit the only thing he'll be doing is singing, as the music would be provided by an instrumental. The last thing he needed to do? Find a good song for him to sing that he liked, and would be somewhat able to restore his sanity. He started looking for a good one, and after searching through several different playlists and wandering around the internet, he found good one, namely Can't Stop by Red Hot Chili Peppers. It had a good bassline, and the vocals didn't seem too hard for him to take care of. Seeing as how everything was in place, he set off to start preparing, spending nights smuggling his equipment into the gymnasium, as he wanted to be free of his problems.
By the time the seventh night hit, everything was in place. All the lights were properly configured; Matt found an instrumental version of the song, and had memorized the lyrics beforehand. Once he was clear for it all and there wasn't anyone else to witness it and make a fool out of him, he started the show, the instrumental starting to play. The drums and guitar blended well, mixed with the bass for a great song. Once the thirty second instrumental intro was finished, Matt took the microphone and started singing, while the blue spotlight was shining on him, his eyes closed for more emphasis on singing.
"Can't stop, addicted to the shindig
Chop Top, he says I'm gonna win big
Choose not a life of imitation
Distant cousin to the reservation
Defunct the pistol that you pay for
This punk, the feeling that you stay for
In time, I want to be your best friend
East side lovers living on the west end
Knocked out but boy you better come to
Don't die, you know the truth as some do
Go write your message on the pavement
Burn so bright I wonder what the wave meant
White heat is screaming in the jungle
Complete the motion if you stumble
Go ask the dust for any answers
Come back strong with fifty belly dancers"
As Matt sang the first verse, the lights came into effect as they shined from behind him, somewhat resembling Kinzie's performance from before. Albeit this time, rather than playing an instrument, Matt was singing the vocals solo while the music was just played over the speakers. Once he hit the chorus, the lights spiked and pointed at Matt as he sang.
"The world I love
The tears I drop
To be part of the wave, can't stop
Ever wonder if it's all for you?
The world I love
The trains I hop
To be part of the wave, can't stop
Come and tell me when it's time to"
After the first chorus, the lights turned down a bit as they relit the area, but with just the right amount of focus to make it look like Matt was singing in a void of sorts. It wasn't that long after the chorus until the next verse, where the lights still focused on Matt, colors swapping between white, red, blue, and cyan.
"Sweetheart is bleeding in the snow cone
So smart, she's leading me to ozone
Music the great communicator
Use two sticks to make it in the nature
I'll get you into penetration
The gender of a generation
The birth of every other nation
Worth your weight, the gold of meditation
This chapter's going to be a close one
Smoke rings, I know you're going to blow one
All on a spaceship persevering
Use my hands for everything but steering
Can't stop the spirits when they need you
Mop tops are happy when they feed you
J. Butterfly is in the treetop
Birds that flow the meaning into bebop"
Once the verse was done, the lights divided into places where other members of a band would be, one light on the guitarist, one light on the bassist, and one light on the drummer, the last one on the vocalist, Matt. He gripped the microphone tightly for the chorus, putting passion into his singing.
"The world I love
The tears I drop
To be part of the wave, can't stop
Ever wonder if it's all for you?
The world I love
The tears I drop
To be part of the wave, can't stop
Come and tell me when it's time to"
At this point, the lights calmed down as the music took a slower pace, Matt letting go of the microphone and simply singing into it in place, but grabbing it every now and then for the bridge.
"Wait a minute I'm passing out
Win or lose, just like you
Far more shocking
Than anything I ever knew
How about you?
Ten more reasons
Why I need somebody new just like you
Far more shocking than anything I ever knew
Right on cue"
With that verse done, there was an instrumental break, letting Matt catch his breath and look around the empty gymnasium. His imagination made it seem like there were people watching him, and he was part of a famous band. All cheering for them, applauding their performance. It was completely different from Matt's reality, where he was growing more and more antisocial and lonely... When the instruments started picking up again, Matt went fully into it, taking the microphone and putting his whole heart into it for the next verses.
"Can't stop, addicted to the shindig
Chop Top, he says I'm gonna win big
Choose not a life of imitation
Distant cousin to the reservation
Defunct the pistol that you pay for
This punk, the feeling that you stay for
In time I want to be your best friend
East side lovers living on the west end
Knocked out but boy, you better come to
Don't die you know the truth as some do
Go write your message on the pavement
Burn so bright I wonder what the wave meant"
All the while Matt sang his heart out, the lights spiraled around in multiple colors. But as in the instrumental, each of the instruments started to fade out, and at the end of it all, Matt's voice was the last thing audible.
"Kickstart the golden generator
Sweet talk but don't intimidate her
Can't stop the gods from engineering
Feel no need for interfering
Your image in the dictionary
This life is more than ordinary
Can I get two, maybe even three of these?
Coming from space
To teach you of the Pleiades
Can't stop the spirits when they need you
This life is more than just a read through"
Once Matt was done, most of the lights turned off, save for one, the spotlight pointed at him. Feeling back to normal, he looked up into the air and yelled, feeling his sanity return. He smiled into the ceiling, fixing his hair and blinking rapidly. Even though the venue was empty, it gave him the feeling of having just performed for an audience of thousands. He went off to fix everything and dismantle the colored filters in the lights and take his laptop back home, but he realized something. The instrumental he had gotten his hands on didn't include the secondary vocal line, but he still heard a second voice in the right areas. He looked around in the darkness before some lights near the stage turned on, revealing... Alex, who was leaning against a wall with a microphone in her hand. "Hello, Matt." Her voice was different, an entire pitch down from her usual voice. She didn't sound mad however, it was more of just less-childish. She walked to Matt, staring him in the eye. "Quite a performance you put on there." She told him. "Uh... Thanks. How did you know about this...?" Matt asked her. "Well, I saw you sneaking your equipment into this place a few times, and I just kept going here since." She replied as she put the microphone she was holding on a nearby table. "But... I'm here to tell you something." Alex told him, turning to him as a serious expression grew on her face. "I know who's doing the murders, and I know how we can stop them." Matt was surprised by that, and hastily said something. "...We'll discuss this at my house. I'm not sure if we're the only ones here..." He told her, taking his laptop and equipment with him. Looks like they'll need a plan, and it feels like this is all gonna wrap up soon...
