Chapter 4: Battle of the Bands

The morning after Zoe's death, no one seemed to question it. Unlike the previous victim, Zoe didn't have any friendly connections, and the one friend she DID have she tried to use as a means to an end and got killed by her. Nobody seemed to question her missing, not even the teacher in her first class that day. Must have missed her name somehow, but no matter what, Zoe's death didn't have much of an impact. It didn't lower school atmosphere or put anyone off. Gossip going around the school made it sound like nobody really liked her, so overall it didn't affect many people. However, killing her did reduce Kinzie's sanity a bit, and while it still didn't show clearly, signs were appearing that indicated it. At home, she had to balance out her regular schoolwork with activities that kept her sanity in check, like playing video games or writing in her notebook. Matt, one of the other people aware of what was going on, got higher suspicion of Kinzie after seeing her act differently, just like the time after Emily's death. However, unlike the previous death, he couldn't focus on looking into it. There was an event coming up for the school, a talent show. However, unlike others, this one WASN'T gonna be boring, because the organizers, the first fun Student Body Council they've had in the school, banned any mediocre acts and restricted it to things that are a lot more exciting to watch. In particular, band performances, epic solos, and pyrotechnics, which any normal school would have banned in an instant. However, this isn't a normal school by any means, so it didn't really matter. Matt was tasked by the delinquent crew to write a song for it, because thanks to the Guidance Counselor vouching for them, they were able to snag a spot for an attempt. Knowing he needed to pull out all the stops for this, he broke out his own notebook, took a pen, and got to writing.

Everyone involved with the event was doing their best in practices, from Matt's group with their new song Matt wrote, Kinzie with her violin practices, and the other contestants with an assortment of acts. It was two weeks before the event, so they had plenty of time. Matt's group's leader, Rin, was doing the main guitar, others did backup guitar, drums, keyboard, and Matt did main vocals. The sixth member couldn't do anything, so they just left him to be the hype man in the audience. Practices were particularly interesting, as they took place in the gym when nothing was going on and they were free to use it. They put plenty of effort into it, Matt having thrown plenty of ideas into the song. Kinzie, meanwhile, was practicing her violin when at home, having made a violin rendition of a song she knew. It was a complicated solo, and while piano was required as backup, she extracted the piano from a different cover, and put it on a disc to be played while she performed. She was incredibly focused, building up her arms' endurance to take both carrying the violin and playing the very complicated solo. While her practices' downtime wasn't exactly eventful, as she was reviewing the notes, when she played, time seemed to stop for her. Her eyes closed when playing, using her instinct to play to her best efforts. Her music filled the silent home of hers, giving it life and changing the dark atmosphere of living alone. Light seemed to emanate from her bow, effectively making it look like she was using solid magic to play. After each practice, she was a lot livelier, knowing what she just did and how beautiful it was. Seems like they're prepared to win it all...

Two weeks of practices, rescheduling, and slight arguments later, it was time for the event. At seven in the evening, everyone showed up in their own style of outfit, as people were permitted to wear civilian attire. Matt wore a black shirt, blue jacket, pants, motorcycle boots, and a pair of shades, while Kinzie wore... a maid's outfit. However, it was a fancy one, not like the very... lewd ones more prominently seen. She said it was for the performance, and no one objected. Preparing all their instruments, Matt's group were set to perform later on. Other performances included a singer, a dance group, and a guy showing off a homemade flamethrower. They had to get him off the premises because while pyrotechnics WERE technically allowed, that was just straight up risking arson. When it came time for Matt's group to perform, they got all the instruments on the stage as the sixth member watched from the audience. A few moments after they finished setting up, Matt took the mic as the two guitarists got their picks ready. Everything plugged in and set up, it was time. They started off with a guitar solo from both guitarists that sounded straight out of a 80s movie. Then, Matt started singing.

"Your eyes staring into my eyes

Who am I but a guy with two eyes on the prize

And the prize in my eyes in ten times

The surprise in your eyes as I kiss you goodnight

Your smile is the fire that rocks my soul

Gonna remember it until I grow old

Life is too short, you gotta do things right

So baby let's just party toni-ight

Baby let's just party toni-ight"

Matt's first verse was followed by a guitar solo and the rest of the instrumental, Matt dancing in place and twirling the mic in his hand.

"We've come out on top, we're in front of the line

We're here to rock out and have a good time

Cause the past is the past, and the future is bright

So baby let's just party toni-ight

Baby let's just party toni-ight"

Matt's chorus was followed by the rest of the instrumental, and while he was singing, the crowd cheered. Their expectations weren't very high when they heard the delinquents were gonna perform, but they seriously didn't expect their performance to be THIS great. Kinzie was watching from the back, imagining Matt was singing about her. The thought made her smile, a rarity for her to do. Matt repeated the lyrics, but once he cleared the chorus once more, the music started to fade away, and Matt said the final line. "So baby let's just party toniiiiight..." They finished up, and the drummer clicked their drumsticks together, signaling the song's finish. The crowd cheered their loudest, and they all just waved back, a smirk on Matt's face. Packing up the instruments and taking them back, they all were happy. Matt was impressed with the group's performance, while Rin applauded his vocals. Overall, their performance was exceptional. Up next, strangely enough, is Kinzie, with her violin already out and the piano backup already prepared and plugged into the speakers around the gymnasium that was outfitted with a stage. She moved into the spotlight, raised up her violin, aligned her bow, and started playing a piece known as Flowering Night.

She pulled her bow across the strings with a heavenly sound, her melody that she put plenty of effort into playing. The air in the room was filled with warmth as her music sounded, Kinzie's hand moving at incredible speed as she played. The light effect had returned, but much more pronounced as Kinzie looked like she was being shined upon from behind. The piano backup was also great, complementing the masterful violin work. Blue diamonds rose up from the stage below, surrounding her and swirling around in a blue haze. Kinzie's eyes were still closed while playing as the music got more intense, leaving the crowd dumbstruck at the insane level of skill Kinzie was showing off. Even Matt, who was watching from behind, was caught off guard at her talent. The piano didn't want to be left uncontested, and played like its non-existent life depended on it. Kinzie slowed down for a moment of peace, before speeding back up. The diamonds from earlier were still present, moving behind Kinzie and shaping themselves into knives before stabbing themselves in a circle around Kinzie, and slicing a blue line in the stage, moving in circles as an aura showed itself around the violinist. It was elegant and graceful, every note played filled with so much skill that even the professional violin player in the school would cry out of shame. The music echoed not only around the gymnasium, but in the entire campus, her music heard throughout the halls. Everyone watching couldn't do anything but admire silently, as any noise would be considered disrespectful. As the final parts approached, Kinzie opened her eyes and revealed them to be red, raising her head from the violin and staring at the audience with a killer's smile. The aura was stronger as the circle of knives from before made sure she was the highlight. The piece was coming to a close, and the piano had faded as Kinzie finished up on the violin, ending on a high note.

When Kinzie finished, the knives and light disappeared, only leaving Kinzie on the stage with the spotlight aimed at her. The crowd instantly took to cheering, even stronger than when they cheered for Matt's group. Matt met Kinzie on her way out of the stage, completely shocked. "How- What- HOW WAS THAT SO GREAT!?" Matt practically yelled out, Kinzie only having a smug grin on her face. "That's a thing I'm not gonna tell anyone." She said, giggling afterward. Rin came to them, also impressed by Kinzie's performance. "Wow... Real good out there... Kinzie, was it?" She asked. Kinzie nodded, noticing how Rin was leaning on Matt. "Well, I gotta admit. You beat us out there. Well done. Let's go, Matt." Rin said, turning to leave. Matt followed, but he looked back, waving at Kinzie. "See ya next time. Hope you win something for that performance." He said, smiling as he walked away. Kinzie smiled back, but under her false smile, she knew she found a new target, Rin. How she was gonna eliminate the new rival, she didn't exactly know...
