Chapter 3: Zoe
Classes continued after the lunch period, and Matt, Kinzie, and Alex headed back to their rooms. Kinzie snapped out of her trance and actions before rushing back to class. Matt, still a tad miffed about Alex ruining his nap, headed to class gritting his teeth. Alex sort of just reappeared in her classroom, exiting out of a closet somehow. Things carried on as usual all the way up to the end of the day. Kinzie went home alone as usual, carrying her things quickly and avoiding other people. Matt on the other hand, walked with Alex up until an intersection where they had to part ways, as they lived on different sides. Matt still had his bat in his hand, leaning against his head as if it were a greatsword carried by a knight. Once he got home, he quickly switched out of his uniform and slipped into a shirt and some shorts, and crashing down on the sofa where he slept if he was tired enough, rather than in his bedroom. He switched on the television and grabbed the remote, finding something to watch. Meanwhile, Kinzie had finally made it back home, taking her a while to walk there. Her house was smaller than Matt's, only one floor and with one of everything, from bedrooms to floors. She was living alone and had to live off money that was left to her, as her parents were absentees. The only thing she could try to use to figure out where they went was a note left to her, saying her mother had to leave for somewhere to do research and couldn't bring Kinzie. It also said she left behind a large amount of money so she wouldn't end up starving. Kinzie was fine with it, as she was free to do what she wanted, murder included. She took a shower before changing clothes into pajamas, as it was already six in the evening by the time she got home, having left the academy at 5:30. She had dinner, noodles and some microwave chicken. She needed to save money, as her resources were finite. She entered her bedroom and saw a box on her bed. Opening it up, she saw it was a plush version of Matt, for whatever reason. A note was attached that said, "I thought you might like this. –Z" Zoe sent it, huh? Wonder why...
The next day, Kinzie woke up at four in the morning like the usual. She shut off her alarm and started getting ready for class. Taking a shower, getting her uniform, eating breakfast, and charging her phone. Matt on the other hand, was still in bed, sleeping soundly. He had fallen asleep the previous night listening to music, and his custom alarm had woken him up at five. When the drop for the music hit, his eyes flung open, rising up and turning it off. He rubbed his eyeballs, blinking repeatedly before looking at the time. He slowly fixed his bed, made cereal for breakfast, prepared his uniform, and polished his bat. By the time it struck 6:30, he was headed out the door, dashing to see if he could get there early. Kinzie had left beforehand, already walking to school at six. She was always alone before and after school, but it was more or less the same during classes as well. Especially after she had killed one of her only friends, Emily. While Zoe did show up from time to time, it didn't really make a difference as she was mostly missing in action, doing other things. Kinzie was listening to music as she walked, enjoying the calmness of the early morning. Matt on the other hand, was practically dashing as his own music was fast paced, looking as if he was working out. They had arrived at the same time somehow, crashing into each other along the way. Matt had bumped into Kinzie, causing her earphones to drop out. Matt looked at her and apologized. "Sorry! Was in a hurry." He said, not even noticing it was Kinzie. Strange, as he should have known it was her in a glance since the only two students with blue hair in the school were him and Kinzie. Regardless, while Matt ran ahead, Kinzie was left stunned. She calmly picked her earphones up, wiped them off, and put them back in, approaching the school as the sun peeked over the horizon. Kinzie went inside the locker room and stuffed her phone in her locker hastily as she took out her books for the morning. Matt, looking for his group while carrying his backpack that had his bat's handle sticking out, stopped running to rest. He shook his head and finally spotted his group, having been missing since yesterday. Looks like a new day has begun.
Kinzie was going through her day normally, and so were Matt and Alex. She was writing in her notebook as usual, while Matt was hitting baseballs in the field with his group, who wanted to test his skills during lunchtime. They may be classified as delinquents, but they can still have fun. Matt managed to hit all of the balls, with one of them getting hit so hard it escaped campus grounds and went about halfway across the town. They all looked at each other before dashing away in a panic, not wanting to get linked to whatever happens when the ball lands. Their leader, Rin, was quite mad at Matt, who just chuckled as they headed back to their usual spot in the bleachers, Matt hiding the bat. Alex was watching them run, laughing wildly with no regard for anyone watching to think of her as weird. Thankfully, no one was, so she was free to act like a maniac. Not that it mattered much, as she acted like that even if others were present. Kinzie was still writing in her notebook, documenting her encounter earlier and making fantasies. Things went normally up until the end of the day, where she had found a note in her locker telling her to go to the basement of the school at eight. Seeing where this is going, she made sure she was prepared and waited patiently for evening to arrive. Matt and Alex went home already, but Kinzie stayed in the library. The staff had left already, but because Kinzie has a good ability to appear like she isn't there, she was able to stay inside. At eight, she finally went down to the basement, trying to be careful of anything hidden inside.
In the basement, she found Zoe inside, leaning against the incinerator. "I've been waiting for you." She said, moving toward Kinzie. Her aura was suspicious, and Kinzie didn't let her guard down. "So, what do you want?" Kinzie asked, scanning Zoe from top to bottom and moving away from her into the middle of the room. "I just wanted to ask you something." Zoe told her, looking away. "Do you really deserve Matt?" Her question pierced Kinzie, causing her to have a shocked expression and freezing in place. "Because if he found out what you did to Emily, I don't think he'll want to be with you." Zoe continued, about to put the next part of her plan into action. "Why... are you asking this?" Kinzie asked her, still stuck in place. Zoe smirked, rolling her eyes. "You see, I only really helped you kill Emily because I needed you to get rid of her. I wanted Matt for myself. And now that you've taken her out, I just need to dispose of you..." Her smirk turned into a smile as she pulled out a knife. Kinzie saw it, and as Zoe tried to stab her, she dodged to the side before kicking Zoe in the stomach. She grunted before trying to stab again, once more getting avoided by Kinzie as she kept on dodging. She punched Zoe before delivering a kick to the leg, trying to knock her down. Zoe attempted to catch Kinzie, but she was too quick to be hit. Zoe clocked Kinzie in the face before going for a stab again, but she regained composure and moved in time to avoid it. Kinzie kicked Zoe in the stomach twice, the second time to knock her down and kick the knife away. While it could have ended there, something triggered in Kinzie. All of a sudden, she pulled Zoe, who was struggling from the multiple hits, closer to the incinerator. Zoe got up rapidly and tried punching Kinzie, but she ducked and Zoe hit the incinerator instead. She let out a yelp of pain before Kinzie opened the incinerator and shoved Zoe inside, who couldn't react in time to open it up before Kinzie activated it, the fires inside starting quickly. The pain instantly hit Zoe, who was starting to scream as she was quickly consumed by the flames. Her screams echoed through the empty halls above, going through the vent that led from the incinerator to the vents that lead outside of the building. It was haunting, but at that point, Kinzie was becoming numb to it. She simply stood back as she watched Zoe get reduced from a recognizable human form to nothing but ashes. When it had finished, there wasn't anything left of her, not even a remnant from the ashes. Kinzie had eliminated another rival, but in doing so, had killed her only other friend. But to her, she was nothing but an obstacle at that point, one planning to take Matt for herself. Things now looked even lonelier for Kinzie, without a friend or accomplice to help her out. She sighed and shook her head, and nothing more. Not a tear shed for a dead friend, not even a hint of remorse. A monster was being made, and, left unchecked, will have what she wanted...
