Chapter 8: The crowning (2) 🖤💛❄️
Word count: 1915
Late at night, Kael couldn’t sleep. He tossed and turned, the heaviness in his chest refusing to lift. With a frustrated groan, he sat up, running a hand through his disheveled hair. His eyes drifted to the window, where ribbons of green and purple light danced across the sky, their glow reflecting softly on the glass.
For a moment, the unease in his heart stilled. He swung his legs over the side of the bed and padded to the window. Standing there, bathed in the ethereal glow of the aurora borealis, he felt something he couldn’t name—something calm, yet restless. It was as if the lights were speaking to him, whispering secrets he couldn’t quite hear.
He smiled as peace overtook. For a moment his worries and pain was gone. He walked back and drew his blanket from his bed. He dropped the items on the floor as he opened the windows. He let out a satisfied gasp as the light of the aurora borealis danced around his face.
With a beaming smile he sat cross legged on the floor - his blanket clutched tightly to his chest. He's been seeing the aurora borealis since he was little. Why does it feel so different now?
He sat there and thought of nothing. He was blank..he was peaceful and he was calm.

A
s the night withdrew and day began to surface, there was a violent rush of wind that came with snow and cold.
The cool breeze blew in through Kael's open window into his room. The breeze circulated throughout the room, making Kael shiver.
The teeth gnashing cold entered his body. He woke up with a shiver. With a wince, he sat up. He rubbed his arms as he looked around.
The window rattled violently as the breeze blew. He quickly got up to close the windows, but a heavy breeze that came with heavy snow blew him back and covered him in snow.
With a grunt he brought himself out of the snow. But the breeze still blew violently. His windows were becoming covered with frost. He pushed hard against the heavy breeze blowing him back and shut the windows.
“ Phew!,” he sighed in relief and wiped the snowflakes off his forehead.
He dramatically fell on his blanket as he screams into his blanket. Suddenly, the big, buff reindeer came in with his candy cane spear and a package in the other hand.
Kael quickly raised his head up to see who it was.
“ Oh, it's you,” Kael said casually.
“ The princess of snow delivered a package for you. Her people are here to prepare for the ceremony,” The muscular reindeer said.
“ Her people?,” He muttered to himself. “ That explains the snow,” he muttered to himself.
The reminder cleared his throat and raised a brow. He was waiting for Kael to come collect his package.
“ Oh, right. The package,” he got up, dusted himself and took the package.
“ Thank you!,” Kael said with excitement as he took the package.
The reminder rolled his eyes and walked.
“ And a good morning to you too?”
Kael brushed the reindeer's attitude off and focused on the package his best friend sent for him. The package was rectangular and long. He sat on the bed and got ready to tear the wrappings off.
“ This looks...big,” he said. He hesitated a bit. “ Please don't be a disturbing picture, please don't be a disturbing picture,” he prayed. Layla's known to give him pictures that can be emotionally.... disturbing.
He simply just took the top off. “ Wow,” he gasped. He reached in and brought out the perfectly folded dress inside. He stood up and unraveled it and it was simply mesmerizing: The dress is a sleek, floor-length design with a fitted silhouette. The primary color is a pale, icy blue, reminiscent of glacial ice with Intricate, swirling patterns evoke the crystalline structure of ice.
It has delicate, frosty white embroidery adorns the hem and cuffs, resembling the intricate patterns found in ice crystals. A sprinkling of iridescent sequins or beads adds a touch of shimmering magic, like the sparkle of ice in sunlight. The dress features a high, rounded collar, framing the face like the delicate edges of an ice sculpture. Long, flowing sleeves are slightly flared at the wrist, with a subtle flare at the cuff, echoing the gentle curves of ice formations. A delicate, crystal-like brooch or pendant adds a touch of elegance, suspended from a slender, frosty white chain. Icy blue boots or shoes with a subtle sparkle complement the dress, completing the icy masterpiece.
(The dress Layla sent for him)
“ What's going on with the neck of this dress?,” he scrunched his face. “ Is this meant to eat me alive or....” he wondered as he examined the dress. “ And if we're matching... how's her dress going to look? But it doesn't matter. All I care about, is that we'll be there together,” he hugged the dresses tightly and rushed to freshen up and wait till she arrived and it was time.

The bell of the north pole rang in a beautiful tone to indicate it was time for the ceremony. It was 6'0clock exactly when the bell rang.
Kael ran enthusiastically to his window and stared outside.
“ It's tiiiimeee!,” he whistle toned like Mariah Carey.
He quickly put on his crazy dress.
“ I really look like I'm being gobbled up by this dress,” he said as he examined himself in the mirror. “ But I love it!,” he giggled.
He quickly ran out and headed downstairs where he met Santa and Mrs. Claus adjusting each other's outfit.
“ The pin goes inward not outward!,” Santa said in a high tone.
“ I know where the pin goes!"
“ Ow!”
“ Sorry, that was me”
“ Just forget it!” Santa yelled. “ We're late”
And that's when they say Kael coming down the stairs- walking as if what he had on was heavy... which it was.
“ What are you wearing?!,” Mrs. Claus asked as she laughed and staggered to him.
While Santa tried to hold in his laugh.
“ It was a gift from Layla,” Kael answered. “ She said it'll be a good idea if we wore matching dresses,” he said innocently. “ And know I see that, that was a great mistake,” he chuckled.
Mrs. Claus laughed her heart out.
“ Too bad you're not allowed to the ceremony,” Santa said as he adjusted his cufflinks.
“ What?,” Kael asked as worry and fear bubbled inside.
“ Dear, we don't let him out at all. Let him be out this time,” Mrs. Claus said softly.
Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus shared a communicative look. Through his eyes and his countenance, Mrs. Claus understood the intense fear her husband had. Santa shifts his gaze to Kael. He tears up as he beholds the child.
“ I'm sorry,” he said with a shaky voice.
“ Edward's my brother and Layla's my best friend. Don't you think I should be present during their ceremony,” Kael raised his voice.
“ Uhh,no,” Santa answered with a straight face.“ After Layla's been crowned, you'll never see her again. And as for Edward.....he is not your brother. You two were not born of the same parents. You do not share his blood. And hence, you are not his brother,” Santa said coldly.
Kael's breath ceased. He stared dead eyed at Santa. Those words were heavy and destructive. Kael's heart broke as those words sanked in. A tear rolled down his cheek.
“ I understand,” Kael said- his voice shaky. He batted his eyelashes to stop the tears. He turned and walked two steps. Then he turned back and said : “ Could you at least tell Layla I said good luck and I hope she's a great and powerful queen?,” he said as the tears pushed harder.
Santa nodded. He stretched out his hands and opened his palms for Mrs. Claus to take it. Mrs. Claus- with a sympathetic face-glanced back at the broken, innocent young man who was walking up the stairs with sadness, fear and anger weighing on him.
He put her hands in Santa's. “ What I did, is best for as all,” he said.
But she gave no form of response. She just stared down and avoided his gaze. Santa sighed and led her to the ceremony.

K
ael locked the door. And as always, he was sad, heartbroken....and he felt rejected. They no more tears to cry. The carpet alone could tell the story of every tear that it soaked up. He just sat there, leaned against the door, clutching his aching heart.
A haunting, wintery, melancholy tune starts to play as he begins to sing.
Verse 1
Is it the snow that falls too cold,
Or the words that I was told?
Do they see me as a shadow,
Lost and left to stand alone?
Chorus
Oh, what’s so wrong with me?
Why can’t they let me be?
I try to shine, I try to stay,
But the cold just takes my warmth away.
---
Verse 2
For years I’ve searched, I’ve longed to find
A love that isn’t cold, unkind.
But every door, it shuts too fast,
Each bitter look becomes my past.
Pre-Chorus
I’m reaching out, my hands held high,
And everyone sees, and turns away,
I show them my heart, and all they see is evil,
But no one sees the tears I cry.
Am I the storm they’ve come to fear?
The monster who was born right here?
Chorus
Oh, what’s so wrong with me?
Why can’t they let me be?
I try to shine, I try to stay,
But the cold just takes my warmth away.
---
Bridge (soft, reflective)
Who am I? Where did I begin?
What flows beneath my fragile skin?
Did someone love me once before?
Or am I just a tale they ignore?
I stare into the glassy skies,
And wonder if they hear my cries.
Do they see me from afar?
Do they know how lost I really are?
---
Verse 3 (building emotion)
I’ve begged for warmth, I’ve fought through pain,
But all I’ve found is icy rain.
Each bitter glance, each cold embrace,
Leaves deeper cracks I can’t erase.
The answers hide, just out of reach,
A truth the stars will never teach.
Am I cursed, or just unclaimed?
A name forgotten, never named?
Pre-Chorus
The weight is more than I can bear,
I’m broken now, beyond repair.
This heart of mine, it’s torn, it’s bare,
And I can’t take it anymore.
---
Final Chorus (emotional crescendo)
Oh, what’s so wrong with me?
Why can’t they let me be?
I tried to shine, I tried to stay,
But the cold has taken my warmth away.
Bridge 2 (intensely vulnerable)
For years I’ve reached for love to find,
But all I’ve known are hearts unkind.
I gave my all, I gave my trust,
Only to watch it turn to dust.
What did I do to deserve this fate?
Is there a reason I bear their hate?
If love exists, why can’t it see,
This frozen soul inside of me?
---
Outro (soft, fading)
Maybe the snow is where I belong,
A place too cold for any song.
I’ll fade away, just let me go,
A shadow lost beneath the snow.
He clutches to himself and sobs...
