Epilogue: Moonlight
Walking out into the cold evening air, Jessie clasped his hands together as he tried to gather what little warmth he could. Looking out onto the rooftop ahead of him he smiled as he walked to a small lawn chair he had placed by the edge, reaching into his pocket he pulled free a pack of cigarettes. As he sat down he smacked the bottom of his pack against his palm as he wrestled free a smoke. Grabbing the lighter he left on the table beside him, he tried to light his cigarette as he looked down at the busy city below. The city lights and noises were getting hard for him to get used to but slowly he found the noises comforting as time went on.
"I didn't know you smoked." A voice behind him said startling Jessie.
He watched in anguish as his cigarette dropped from his lips onto the street below. He sighed as he turned to face an approaching Lilly, her disapproving gaze bit into Jessie as he pulled free another from his pack.
"I picked up the habit when we were at that motel. Toby is a really bad influence. Plus it helps hide this new smoke smell that's been following me around" Jessie said as he lit the new cigarette.
Taking a long drag he watched as Lilly sat in the free chair beside him, her porcelain features illuminated by the dying light of the sun.
"Of course it was Toby, that guy's been smoking like a chimney ever since we left the motel." She said as she shivered in the cold February air.
"Can you blame the guy, his husband died and his sister has been missing for two months." Jessie said as he flicked the dead end of his cigarette off. "Not to mention he who must not be named snapped Akita's sword in half."
It was necessary for me to do so, I will not apologize.
Eat shit.
An awkward silence fell over the two of them as Jessie cringed, he had also picked up the nasty habit of saying things before he thought.
You do have a way with women.
Keep talking shit and I won't let you watch the end of Friends.
I apologize.
"Do you think they're ok?" Lilly asked bringing Jessie back.
"I don't know, Plague has no clue where they might have taken them if they were even caught. Though I doubt Sarah wouldn't try to make her way back to Toby." Jessie said worriedly.
"Edgar." Lilly said annoyed.
"Righ, right sorry. Still getting used to that."
"How are we supposed to make him feel welcome if we can't even use the name he chose." Lilly said.
"Why did he choose that name?" Jessie asked as the last of the sunlight died.
The night sky greeted them as the two continued talking.
"No clue, he's a pretty secretive guy." She said as she stared into the sky.
"Especially with me, I have a feeling that guy doesn't like me." Jessie said as he finished his cigarette.
Jessie turned and smiled at Lilly, to see her return it filled him with that strange feeling of admiration again.
You're hopeless.
Shaking aside the comment Jessie stared out at the sky in awe, he was glad to be here. The city was starting to grow on him, he felt at home a thousand miles away.
"Can I ask you something Jessie?" Lilly asked nervously.
"You just did." Jessie teased as he contemplated having another cigarette.
"No I'm being serious here you jerk." Lilly said slapping his arm playfully. "I have a serious question to ask."
"Alright, go ahead and ask your question."
Nervously she hesitated, Jessie could sense her unease in asking this question and sat forward in his seat.
"D-do you think we could go to space someday?" she asked sheepishly.
Stunned Jessie sat back in his seat staring at his friend.
"Jesus Lilly, you had me worried there for a second." Jessie said with a smirk on his face. "I'm not sure, I mean they make new advancements every day in the space fie-"
"No, I mean is there a chance there's a chosen out there that could take us to space?" She asked annoyed.
Again silence fell on the two as Jessie thought about her words, the thought of other chosen existing had crossed his mind but he always dismissed the idea.
"Why do you want to go to space?"
She turned to face the moon, a giant pearl in the sky shining down on the two. The moon had become welcoming to Jessie due to his trips to the Void and he felt a sort of longing as he stared up into the night sky.
"I used to look up at the stars with my parents when I was a kid before they passed away. My dad used to promise he'd take us there one day." She said slightly shivering as the night air grew colder.
"I didn't know your parents had passed, was it during the quake?" Jessie asked thinking of a still depressed Rose.
Since the day their town fell she had been a mess of emotions and regret, Jessie found it hard not to feel the same way as the memory of Sam along with their favorite diner crossed his mind.
"No, they had passed before that's actually why I was in Sherwood to begin with." Lily said with an awkward smile. "I had gone to live with a friend of my mother's in that town and honestly, I hated every day I was there."
Jessie stayed silent as he waited for her to continue, his heart ached as he thought of home.
"They didn't wait long to make it clear that I was nothing but a nuisance, not an addition to the family. Honestly good riddance to them, they weren't good people but I didn't have anyone else so. That all changed when I saw you at that bookstore, God it feels like another life ago I was there." She said coyly.
"So you remembered me." Jessie said suddenly happy. The feeling confused him as he waited for Lily to continue.
"So much has happened, to all of us and nowadays I'm finding it hard to find a reason to stay happy." She said never taking her eyes off of the moon above.
Jessie looked up at the moon thinking of all the damage he had done, all the trouble his brother had caused. He had to admit, things looked bleak. He mulled over Lily's words finding it hard to say anything to help, his mind wandered.
"Tell you what, I'll take you up there. I've always wanted to go to the moon anyways." Jessie said as he stood up from his seat.
He offered his hand to Lily, as he stared down at her in the pale moonlight his heart beat and the now familiar admiration seemed to grow as she stared up at him wide eyed. Taking his hand she rose to face him, and Jessie had a hard time taking his eyes off her.
"How are you going to take me to the moon?" Lily asked.
"Don't know yet, but I'm the Icon Of Sin. I'm sure I'll be able to figure it out." Jessie said as he broke his gaze.
His face felt hot as he strode past Lily, he shivered as the night air intensified.
"Looks like its going to rain again, we better head inside." He said as he turned back to face Lily.
He felt the air leave his chest as he watched her look up into the sky, the smile on her face was so wide it was hard not to smile himself. Shuffling over to him Lily smiled up at him as they walked back towards the rooftop door.
"Its Seattle, its always raining."
